Jill was the heart and soul of this series. The way that she cared for every single one of her friends, the way that she became their biggest advocate, defender and caretaker. The emotional toll that must take on a person to see your friends get sick and die one by one, and yet she bears that with such strength, courage and compassion, even when being scapegoated by bigoted family members. We all need a Jill in our lives.
This scene was so satisfying. After the awful way Ritchie went out, not being around anyone who truly loved him, and the fact that the mother could never take responsibility for being a bad parent to her son, even to the very end (“I didn’t know”), and the horrible way she treated Jill, it felt so cathartic to see Jill call her out on what she did and how she would be ashamed of herself.
Called her out for what? Why did he go home to die, just like all the others? Why didn't Jill take care of him until the end if she wanted him surrounded by love? No she lied and encouraged his nastiness and then decided to blame his mother to make herself feel good!
@@rashelelashley But he wasn't surrounded by the love that he needed. Jill is calling out Ritchie's mother for mainly caring about saving face. Up until this point, Jill has been patient. After she describes the cause of death, Ritchie's mom immediately goes on the defensive without having been attacked. She says his heart gave out and that it's not her fault that he died since I was out of her control. What kind of person immediately says this after talking about their dead son? Think about this as well, if he hadn't been taken home (when your family is pressuring you with tears, it's hard to say no), Ritchie may have recovered. He could have had more time. However, he caved into pressure from his family. They could have honored his initial wish to stay in the hospital but they didn't. It's not easy to stand your ground when you're sick and your family is pressuring you to do something. What damns her even more is the fact that Ritchie asked her to get Jill and she didn't do it that moment. All she had to do was make one phone call and allow her son that one request, yet she didn't. Also, keep in mind that she couldn't tell anyone else why Ritchie was sick because "it's none of their business". If he wants people to know, why keep it secret?
The bit that got me was after this when they have the Christmas at the Pink Palace, Jill’s parents turn up and only then did she finally allow herself to cry cos up until then she’d been holding up and comforting Roscoe, Ash, Ritchie’s sister and everyone else. She just stayed strong for everyone for as long as she could. We should all have a friend like Jill, or better yet BE more like Jill.
Jill's speech was superb. The other words that really struck home was the nurse talking to Jill walking along a corridor and commenting about another patient "He just lies there all day, dying of shame".
This was remarkable writing (and of course the way we were informed of Ritchie's death was as shocking to the audience as it was to the characters). As someone who has lived with HIV for 30+ years, I can only say that this speech was perhaps one of the most moving I have heard - shame is exactly the right word. I recall one of the nurses saying of a patient " he lies there all day dying of shame" - so true, so bloody true. The performers were outstanding, the characters believable. Many today do not know the shame that was felt at the time and indeed because of how I was shunned (including losing my job) 30 years ago, I have trusted few with the information and have consequently lived in the shadows for 30 years.
That is heartbreaking. Truly sorry. However, many people, thousands across the world, STILL live in shame and shadows: some due to their sexual orientation, some due to mental illness/disorder etcetera. Sadly, the world is still full of prejudice and ignorance and bigotry. There are many parts of the world that still didn't achieve progress in this or that sphere of life.
YESSSS Jill. After ALL the ways doctors 🥼 & parents ignored & disrespected her efforts to help these guys… their children… Jill finally got to say her piece, & verbally slap abusive, wilfully ignorant Valerie across her heart.
I don t want to be mean to you, so don t take this wrong. For me this scene was infuriating, that women lost her child, her life will never be the same. Why someone on earth will say those bad things to someone that for the rest of the life will suffer. I see all the characters cared for him and wanted to be there. I feel the mother was shocked by the news and acted this way.... it was wrong what she , but I feel she is a mother who lost her child ... why would someone say those things to her ?
@@andreeat2142 that mother was ABSOLUTELY wrong and deserved every word. Because of her, Ritchie died miserable and alone without his true essence, without his friends and without his identity. Mrs Tozer was an absolute monster

Very strong rumors going around right now that the 14th Doctlr will be announced during the FA Cup's half time break. That would be a perfect time to do it. This scene is one of the reasons why Lydia West would make an amazing Doctor. So fingers crossed!
That lady was right when she said “how didn’t you know” and Jill had a right to dig into Ritiche mom’s ass and in the end he didn’t get to see his love ones or his friends cause his mom wanted to spend the very last minutes with him he barely saw his dad or his bitch of a sister
One thing I never understood in this series was why Colin got the push from saville row for having gay magazines when the manager was caught buggering a young boy in a public toilet gathered the woman was his spouse but still didn't make sense
I don't think Colin got sacked for being gay. The headlines in the newspapers that Colin had in his room were about AIDS. Colin was sacked because that old pervert thought Colin had AIDS, and therefore he was no longer interested in sexually harassing him.
He didnt get the push for having gay magazines, he was fired because the manager thought he had HIV and he was only keeping him around to molest him so when he couldnt he fired him
Everything about this series is amazing, but here we see one of the best lines of all. 'I don't know what happened to you to make that *house* so loveless.' As someone who grew up in a fundamentalist, homophobic, misogynistic and sexually abusive environment, I'd like to commend the choice of word. A place like that is *not* a home.
Confronting ... the endscene could have been my mum and my best friend in conversation were it not that I was a rather jealous monogamic little prick in them days and I survived , many youthfriends did not .
Let's face it , we all thought the dad would be the bigoted parent. This was a shock, sad but a truthful ending to many who endured this attitude towards homosexuality like it was a Germ.
i really hate Ritchie, he has no redeeming qualities what so ever. The fact he willingly went out to infect others is disgusting and yet Jill has the nerve to blame Valerie. Valerie was never portrayed as anything other than loving.... she wouldn't have card if Ritchie was gay.
But she did care, as it very evident in the series. Ritchies friends loved him for who he was - they were his family and in his dying moments his mum refused them from seeing him - SHE is the one who should be ashamed, and everything, EVERYTHING Jill said was 100% correct. I'd have gone even further. Valarie was a bigot.
@@lexkanyima2195 That's actually true. Originally there was supposed to be 6 episodes. The 6th episode would've been set in present day and shows Jill going back to visit Valerie (who at this point would be in a nursing home) and she tells Jill about her abusive father.
What a stupid comment. People didn’t know what it was, the research was in its infancy. By the time most of these young men knew how dangerous unprotected sex was, it was too late.
