Maqgie Smith was absolutely brilliant as Violet. I know she had a long career and was in so many other things. I liked her in Sister Act but for me she was best in Downton Abby. Loved her sense of humour & her wit. Maggie will be sorely missed. RIP Maggie.❤❤

Have you ever seen her in California Suite. A movie that has several little stories sewn together all set in the Beverley Hills Hotel. Her and Michael Caine are in it in a story together (as are Alan Alda and Jane Fonda in another story). She is great in that as a British actress flown out to appear at the Academy Awards.

For those playing the long game...
This is from the movie Downton Abbey a New Era. It splits our characters between England and France. At the beginning of the movie, we are attending the wedding of Tom Branson and Lucy Smith. (Who can forget their sunset Waltz on the balcony. 💕) Upon return the family learns that the Dowager Countess has inherited a Villa in the South of France and has bequeathed it to her great granddaughter Sybiee, Lady Sybil's only daughter. Soon after, Robert receives an invitation to visit the villa, so off he, Cora, Edith, Bertie, Tom, Lucy, Carson, Baxter and Bates set sail for the Rivera. Styled in Mediterranean looks, sailor's hats, swimsuits and tennis skirts. (Swooning over the late 1920s fashion. 💜👙👒👗) Anyway, the mystery begins to unravel and Lord Grantham believes he is Not his father's biological son. Of course all this is dismissed by the Dowager Countess. Yet it leaves calculating dates and numbers. "Curiouser and curiouser."

That’s what Dame Maggie Smith looked like when she was young, like how she looked in the original Clash of the Titans by Harryhausen.
Very good attention to detail - and this is why Downton Abbey is so adored as a franchise. It’s all superb writing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Granthams were part of the delegation of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh when he took part in the Orthodox wedding ceremonies to the Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna Romanova, hence how she got to know the Prince Kuragin

Well at least she was able to end her character on her terms just as much as the managers and the others and despite the popularity I’m sure she was honoured to meet such glorious actors and actresses and a lot of them are grateful to her as well just as much as others were outside of the Abbey.

Since she knows she is dying and wants to be remembered as virtuous, I believe the Dowager tells a lie that ensures her legacy as virtuous and puts to rest Lord Robert Grantham's angst about his birth legitimacy to ensure a virtuous legacy for Robert.
I do think Violet and the French Marquess had a passionate affair.
Everything in Violet's World is about dignity and righteousness, about being above scandal, therefore, she had to lie to shield her progeny and herself above gossip, the one thing the Gentry fear the most.
I also think she and her Russian Prince had an affair also, because she said she was in the process of elopping with him when his Russian whatever she was stopped Violet from going through with it. I doubt if they were elopping without making sure they could satisfy each other in the bedroom, as was Mary's quest with her beaus prior to agreeing to marry.
I think The Dowager was keen on virtue regarding her granddaughters since she knew from her own dalliances how they could lead to possible ruinous repercussions, to not just her, but also to the entire family and to the family name.

    • @MuhammadHassan-hj6mx
      @MuhammadHassan-hj6mx 21 годину тому

Quite a theory, but I would disagree. Violet, despite her affairs, did come from a conservative background, having grown up and lived most of her life in the Victorian Era.
Her ideas about how a husband tells his wife what views to hold (said to Sybil), and that a woman was unable to feel physical attraction unless told to do so by her mother (said to Mary) indicate a very traditional mindset. I doubt she would have consummated either of the affairs.
Also, she says that "if I had been tested again, I would have failed" which isn't necessarily about her marriage failing but also about giving in to the physical charms of the Marquess.
Not to mention, both timeframes are too quick for a physical relationship, given the time period.
The defense rests, your honor. LOL can't believe I'm writing this out at midnight.

I recently saw a documentary on the keeping of the castle, it was filmed in the late 80s or early 90s.
Great to see the real faces, and the realistic struggle they had keeping such a treasure above the red line. But, all I could think the whole time I was watching was: "Who are these strangers in the Crawley's house?!"
I hope the show has brought prosperity to the team in charge of the castle now.

Keeping in mind the Dowager Countess of Grantham's past "indiscretion" & being very slyly clever at getting what she wants, I don't believe that she didn't have an affair with the French Marquis de Montmirail. It is very much possible that she could've already been pregnant at the time of her affair. However, I wouldn't put it past her to hide Lord Grantham's true paternity to protect the family's name & her reputation. Even back then, men didn't just give villas away so nonchalantly to women. Either she saved his life from something or they were lovers. Always thought it was funny how everyone in the movie pretended not to consider that

Edith is wrong. It would have changed a great deal if Robert had been known to be illegitimate. He would have never inherited Downton Abbey in the first place, and therefore never married Cora. And it's not Matthew's father who would have been the heir, but cousin James.
