Titanic 109 - ON A SEA OF GLASS LIVE! Anniversary Livestream and Animation

- The stream really compressed the animation, so click here to watch the animation on its own, with sound effects and a better variety of camera angles: • Titanic REAL TIME SINK...
Keeping with our annual tradition of narrating the sinking of the Titanic in real time over her anniversary, join historian J Kent Layton and myself as we review a brand new animation of the ship's demise.
For the first time, we'll be joined by Kent's co-authors from 'On a Sea of Glass', Tad Fitch and Bill Wormstedt, as well as by Michael Brady of Oceanliner Designs and Illustration.
This new animation was overseen by the authors of 'On a Sea of Glass', who were given full reign and final say in its execution to ensure authenticity, and who will continue to help us tweak this every step of the way. It is far from finished, and there will be adjustments in the future, but we are all looking forward to sharing this work-in-progress, and we hope to see you at the stream!
The stream will be here on this channel, with the link becoming available early April 14th. The stream will begin formally at 10:28 pm Eastern time, though we will likely start a wee bit earlier to warm things up.
Yeah it should definitely be a tradition to do something every April 14. It was amazing.
I would say april 15 cause it sanked on april 15
absolutely. I agree completely
Yes I live these yearly live streams
They literally do, every year
@@isrulius Tom wasn't planning on doing a stream this year because he is no longer working with THG team, until someone told him that he should make one for his new UA-cam channel. THG didn't have no live stream this year just a video.
I live in Western Massachusetts. Back in 1999 I discovered a tiny Titanic museum in the back of a jewelry store. It’s the Titanic historical society, and they had all sorts of artifacts there. From handwritten letters, uniforms and buttons, a few small pieces of the ship itself, all sorts of cool stuff. That blew my mind, hidden in the back of this tiny independent jewelry store.
ive studied the titanic since i was 8 years old. im a 37 guy. As ridicules as this seems.. i'm crying. it must have been so scary for them. omg ive watched the ship sink a billion times. Tonight seemed a bit more real. Thanks Tom. Absolutely remarkable stream.

Thanks to everyone! It was a really emotional night! Thank you Tom and whole team!
Titanic won't be forgotten!
I'm always awake every year from 11:40 to 2:20 a.m. on April 14th to April 15th to remember the sinking. I've been a big historian of Titanic since I was seven and I'm about to turn 36 so it's nice to see people put something together that actually cares there's a lot of people putting things together but they don't really care. They're just doing it because everyone else is. But you do it because you care that makes such a difference. Thank you so much!!
I do the same. I feel like when you fall asleep that's you dying.
I bet you’re in a completely different Timezone.
Do you adjust for time zone differential?
Good stuff
In my humble opinion this was the most compelling live stream to date. Full of incredible commentaries with a lively team, and packed with details that were astonishingly coordinated with the time stamps. The new animation is quite astonishing, with its views from the lifeboats and the misty silhouette emphasizing the breathtaking horror/beauty of the sinking. Already counting the days until next year, and in the meantime buying the book today. Thank you to Tom, and the entire great team.
Yeah I've just ordered that and A Night To Remember
@@RaccoonKCD there’s also Lawrence Beesley’s memoirs/recollections of being there-quite a sharp observer, although some question a few details of what he thought he saw. Good stuff!
@@richterkleiber Oh wow I didn't realise he wrote a book. I'll have a look, I did also notice Lightollers book on Amazon so I guess I'll just have to buy both of them when I get the money haha. Thanks
@@RaccoonKCD Yep, haha I have to pace myself too. I found it to be really interesting--you may wish to check youtube--some of these are up as free audiobooks I believe
@@richterkleiber Haha I know but nothing beats having a hardbook copy
Imagine if the people on board knew that over 100 years after people produced animations about the amazing story of the titanic😢
Sad that I fell asleep before 2:20 it still was a.great stream about the worlds most beautiful ship
I cannot conceive of what it was like for those people clinging to the stern in that dark inky night and what they saw as they went to their deaths. The heart stops at that thought. Thank you for this livestream. I wish I could have joined live, but I only just found this. I've subscribed to your channel and plan on being here on the 110th. Thanks guys for all your hard work. Being a rivet counter/passenger person and basically all around Titanic person, this was just amazing work. Congratulations.
Thank you so much for this outstanding work! After so long now we finally got the most accurate Titanic real time sinking representation to exist!
Great job on this. And i think about everyone on titanic as it went down, and all the people around in lifeboats who saw this. It must have been extrordinary and scary to see. Crazy. I hope all of them are in peace , and titanic was and still is a beauty😍❤
I often think about that too. How would it be standing shoulder to shoulder in a crowd, realizing everyone is doomed? It gives me the chills.
Thank you Tom and sea of glass team ❤️ it means the world to me
Thank you to everyone who worked in creating this livestream and animation, I really could not have spent this anniversary in a better way. I learned so many new things and I’m grateful for that
Thanks guys for putting on this stream. Much appreciated. Happy I could spend April 14/15th with like minded history lovers.
Honestly, still the best livestream (along with the 2022 one) about the Titanic's sinking. When I talk to someone interested about this disaster, I always refers these to them. An amazing animation with specialist historians commenting and discussing, this blows out of the water any Titanic documentary. This should go on TV as a documentary.
2:52:28 My theory to why it stopped sinking and “reversed” a bit is since she came to an even keel and had that very fast drop. She dived down further then she was supposed to, so her buoyancy corrected her a bit before she started sinking again.
It's actually a very good suggestion on the cause of it. The ship was basically balanced like a teeter-totter at the time. I have actually partially duplicated this effect with a model during some sinking tests, and it seems as good an explanation as any. Again, I'm sorry that I missed your comment this long!
I had no idea this was a thing. I recently rewatched the 2017 live sinking and it’s good to have Tom at the helm. Gonna enjoy this, good to have you Tom and company!
I can't believe Thomas is no longer affiliated with THG; I've always seen him as being the face of the project.
Same here, I think what he was saying was that this live stream isn't fundraising for THG.
why did thomas ditch THG?
@@randomrazr think so, he’s now doing Lusitania which ngl is a bit traitorous.
@Oaky well shit man
@TheMaritimeproductions what are these rumors about him? negative rumors?
The Titanic has been a passion of mine for 30 years. I just now found this channel and I had no idea something like this even existed!💚💚
I've been fascinated with the Titanic ever since I watched the movie by James Cameron for the first time and I got to meet the man who discovered her on the ocean floor, Robert Ballard, and I said to him, it is an honor to meet you and thank you for finding the Titanic, I'll never forget that incredible moment back in 2018.
Thank you Tom! I watched the whole stream live last night from beginning to end. Tom, your passion for the honor and memory of the Titanic is very inspiring. The more I learn of the ship, and those who operated her, the more I feel connected to her. I first was in awe of her when I saw the movie, "SOS Titanic" in 1979. I remember exactly where I was in 1985 when I heard the radio report that the Titanic was found and wanted to learn more about her since then. Your productions here, and also at TH&G, have been amazing.
l
Thank you Tom and all the team. I got up at 3am UK time. worth every minute.. Titanic will never be forgotten.
Titanic will always remain in our hearts
We need a 24/7 channel from March 1st - May 1st just for Titanic
Fell asleep during the stream... now I get to spend today watching!!! Love that you guys do this!
Thank you for all your research and what looks like tons of hours of editing/animation you all put into it.
Families effected by this tragedy nest be very thankful.
I'm keen to listen all the way through this! It's a treat so far.
We hope you enjoy it, Mark! :)
The Way You Did The Final Plunge Was Truly Amazing and Would Love To See More of It Great Job!☺💓
The separation of you, Tom, and THG is still quite new and strange for me, but I really enjoy what all Titanic and history enthusiasts are doing, no matter who and where they are. I really like the anniversary streams. Listening to historians and learning new details each year really is educating, but also a pleasure!
this was fantastic, thanks tom and team for putting it together. i would been lost without a livestream this year. lots of great information in there.
This was a great stream and animation, always pleasant to hear commentary from J.Kent Layton, as well as the other historians and authors. I will be looking forward to the upload of the animation with sound and subtitle commentary in a few weeks Levi, Liam, Mike and Tom!
Didn't realize how the world was changing the exact moment the Titanic went down, with the eve of WWI being means the Titanic was not too far from WWI, and from WWI you have the rise in Fascism in Europe setting up on of the stones of WWII, the build up of the Japanese empire setting the scene for the Pacific Theater of WWII, the Spanish Flu, the Russian Revolution and the formation of the Soviet Union which sets the stone for WWII and for the Cold War.
Thank you for the stream Tom. Will always be here to support your work
Tom we appreciate all the work you do
The ship's story is just amazing, and being able to watch this, several genius people cross checking facts as they speak is as much as amazing as the story itself👍 thanks to you guys for a great video
Bravo to everyone involved with this stream
Hey guys just bought "On a sea of Glass" reading now!!
Still watching this every other week, swear I got the dialog memorized in certain areas! Excited to see what you do for 2022
Awesome! Thank you!
It would be cool if you guys did a "What if" stream one of these days where you basically go through the worst case scenario possible because a lot of miracles happened during the real sinking which saved many lives. Yet many people forget that if it wasn't for that and the crew being the men they were, nobody would have survived this disaster.
As for my favorite White Star Liner? The Nordic.
Thank You for taking the time and effort to mark this disaster.
This depiction of the sinking had me speechless, especially near the end. Very well done.
Great job Tom and esteemed experts! Appreciate this very much thank you!
Great work, the night lives on! Greetings from Flanders, Belgium.
Excellent animation as usual. It’s amazing how many new things I learn each year watching your live streams. Keep up the great content and looking forward to the Lusitania.
its so sad that titanic sank but may all the souls that died rest in piece with the ship and no one will ever be forgotten the ship has a special place in everyones heart
Had a great time. Looking forward to next year.
Can't wait for the updated real time video! Wish we had a closer POV of the break-up though
The last titanic survivor died on my birthday when I was 2 in 2009 and the launching of Titanic’s hull
Great job Tom! :)
It’s amazing how good the animation is😲
You really captured the suffering the ship went through. I just wanted to save her! Tom and Levi along with all the experts who made this possible, I can’t thank you enough for last nights experience!
Great video Tom, looking forward to your new projects and videos away from Honor and glory :)! Hope you have a good week
highly recommend "saving the Titanic" on youtube for evryone, who hasn't seen it already!
about the crew below deck
I watched it and it’s my favourite docudrama on the subject.
2:51:30: "There's a number of very subtle things that you'll miss if you're not looking closely"
2:52:47: ~THE WHOLE SHIP DRASTICALLY RIGHTS ITSELF~
At this point, it is possible that the starboard side of the ship (deck a) began to flood with water, which triggered this alignment.
No doubt a natural tendency for water , is to go where its NOT Flooded ,, so , as one side floods ,and is flooded, water starts to find it over to the port side and slowly balancing out the ship , then the process reverses ! as toward the end , she leans BACK to starboard . Also, the crew pumping , might deliberately flood the port side to keep her on a more even keel or she might have just capsized
@@leighnassau1158 water has a tendency to flood areas it already exists in
it doesn't seek out unflooded areas like a terminator
This was excellent! It is so sad and intense. Personally I will keep all the people in prayer who had so little preparation to face the end of their life. There were many heros that day! I was so disappointed to learn the first lifeboat left the ship with so few passengers (16 I think). So much heartbreak: I had to watch it over 3 sessions. I watched it to the end. Thank you for the excellent depiction. As my Grandparents were children (in Canada) when the Titanic sank I wish I had asked them how and when they first heard about it.. Thank you again, Diane - CT, USA
Great Job !!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Even though I'm off work due to the pandemic, I was bloody tired and couldn't stay up for this. Will catch up in the following days. Thanks for this.
Great work, lads.
This year's LIVE 2023 will start at 9:30 PM - EDT
on April 14 !!!
Thank you folks for doing this. The Titanic and what happened should NEVER be forgotten.,❤
Amazing work guys
OMG thank you so much for this video. 💚💚
Wow! Awesome man just Awesome! Thanks for your work guys. I loved it. Just loved it ❤.
.....Quite fascinating and informative.....I happened to watch this, as it came up as a Recommendation. ...I've been fascinated with the Titanic since I was a teenager, 13 years of age. Thank you for sharing all your dedication and work with all of us, the Wreath was so lovely and how wonderful of all of you to do that. Blessings and Abundance....~
Oh dear...Why do I always cry about this and 9-11? I mean, my Great Grandparents lived through this and my Great Grandmother would always tell us (her kids, grandkids and great grandkids) about where she was when she learned of the Titanic. I now too tell people where I was (and what I was doing) when 9-11 happened. It brought home how these types of disasters deeply effect us in ways we do not understand. I was brought up with the stories, but seeing this and the James Cameron movie (yeah, artistic license, and all that....) just brings on the tears.... Britannica, Lusitania and the TItanic. All great ladies of the ocean. Subscribed!
I’ve watched this three time man today simply brilliant
Excellent work guys!!! 👏
This is what I have been waiting for... thanks Tom,, just subbed x
This is amazing! Thank you for posting! Every year you guys amaze me anew!
Re: any 'lighting issues' etc.... considering what you all accomplished, I think we can forgive a few lights.
About Andrews... while the believed last scene with him might NOT have been as ascribed, it IS plausible. The man was the chief architect to the ship that wasn't supposed to sink. Of course there'd be a point of utter disbelief, bordering on Catatonia. On the other hand, if he was also seen, throwing chairs and other potential floatation devices into the water, to help others stay afloat, all the better.
Yeah Tom it's been 31 years since I have been into the unsinkable RMS Titanic since 5 years old and of today I am 36 years old and I still I am
Wish I could have watched the livestream of this in 1913. Sure it was lit being the first year and all!
Very interesting guys I’m 6months late I’ve always been into ships from that time period great stimulation well done to you all in creating it new here so nice to meet everyone
What a great live
This video was streamed right on my birthday and I wish I was on this stream and donate some money because I was born in 1992 that was 8 decades ago when this happened that was sad to me between the 1997 n' 1953 versions of the Titanic. I give all my respects from Germany...
Tom you are the man! Good work, sir!
great video thanks!
i love titanic
4:12:40 As for me, the 2016 sinking is what led to me discovering THG and Tom and his various projects, all of which I have found engaging and informative. I appreciate your love of history and interest in keeping it alive, something we both share. I also applaud your commitment to the facts and also by extension, opposition to sensationalism and clickbait that is rampant on the internet regarding not just the Titanic but other historical topics as well. .Keep up the good work!
Oh My Gosh! Thak you so much guys for doing this i am a huge Titanic fan as well as a Titanic enthusiast i love leaning more about the ship wreck i love talking about the Titanic if you guys were up to it in the near future mabe considering doing a Titanic Q&A segment i would love to be a part of that as well as over the years i have learned some extraordinary facts about the Titanic that some people may not know.
Tom, I've just got to say, you are one of my favorite historians. Best of luck to you :)
For as horrifying as the sinking is and the thought that it really did happen this really is beautifully crafted animation that looks like a lot of work and hours went into crafting every visual detail. I only just fell in the Titanic story rabbit hole within the past few days from getting UA-cam recommendations of a few Titanic sinking animation videos including yours and watching them at night pretty much as i would with watching a horror movie even if it leaves me with a heavy heart imagining the aftermath of what was both left and lost at sea on the night to remember. Based on watching this live stream playback over the course of two days which has been very informative with the history of the events the night of the sinking but also of the ship itself the commentary sounds like something I could listen to to help pass time at work if say it was on spotify as well as looking forward to what is planned for the 110th anniversary live stream in a couple months.
I was watching an episode of "The Time Tunnel" in 1968, and the time travelers happened to be transported onto a ship at sea. They were relieved to be somewhere safe, rather than plopped into the middle of the ocean, until they read the name of the ship on one of the life rings hanging on the wall, "Titanic" Then they became very worried. At the time I'd not ever heard of the Titanic, so their alarm was new to me. Lucky for them, they just happened to get transported off the ship before it sank. Then a year or two later I happened to catch "A Night to Remember" and was amazed at the story that it told. Over the years I've even read the book more than a few times. For some reason, I wasn't a big fan of the later movie, but that's just me... I always enjoy the chit chat that goes on with these real time sinking videos as they depict a sad end to a great ship. But there is one thing that annoys me. We can have this ship sinking right before our eyes in an hour or 2, but there's not much human activity to be seen. The ship had over two thousand people on it before it went down. And when it went down, it probably took over one thousand people with it! Where are they? If you're going to make these videos of the ship sinking, put some people on it! That should be the goal! A depiction of the ship sinking from the human aspect, rather than what we always seem to have. A lifeless ghost ship...
The clear weather sounds like an Arctic outbreak (of cold air).
Watching the animation gives off an eerie feeling as if Stanley Kubrick directed "Titanic" over James Cameron.
On my 4th viewing of this! I like to listen to it while I'm at work!
Awesome! Make sure you check out the newest upload on my channel as well - it's the full animation without narration, but with sound effects added and improved quality. The livestream really diminished the quality of the visuals.
@@PartTimeExplorer I started it on Monday, deff plan to tackle 'er this weekend! Thanks, Tom!
Still watching this every other week ;)
I love Historic travels he's a good youtuber!!!
I like the fact you added the port list before Titanic hit the iceberg. That's because of the bunker fire on board. They moved all the coal to the port side of the ship causing a slight list. No one could really tell though. Great detail, though.
I won an essay contest in 6th grade 1984 that I wrote about the titanic and it was amazing that literally nobody knew about it at that time...
It’s a pity this live stream wasn’t advertised on the THG channel :( I missed it this year. Anyway thanks for the work, she looks beautiful

Wow!
I just got the book. Its great
34:27 - It's good that you bring this up, because Edward Wilding was Thomas Andrews' deputy and knew as much about the engineering and science as Andrews did. If I remember correctly, his 1912 calculations in terms of the damage surface area were incredibly close to what the forensic evidence shows, and I think I remember reading that his calculations inferred that the ship probably broke in two as a result of the load on the structure - but neither of the inquiries wanted to believe him.
Tom, my man, that was an awesome stream and i loved it, but OH MY GOODNESS i think i lost brain cells from some of the chat!
Thats why I had it off and didn't interact with it for the entire stream 😂
I only interacted to send my super chats lol
That was good!
Congratulations you were the firs comment on this video !!
I’ve been really into Titanic lately, thanks for putting this on UA-cam I read a lot of the comments, I can’t figure out why the ship would change the time by 23 minutes? At midnight? What’s up with that. Thanks again for this, we shall never forget!
it had something to do with the traversing of time zones.
Hi. Watching from Toronto Canada. Sorry I'm late. This is awesome. I'm a big Titanic nerd, I just love the ship. Interesting about Captain Smith, I thought that he died in the wheelhouse? Thank you so much for this. She will never be forgotten.
I will definitely be joining ur Livestream and donating to u in 3 weeks! 😍
I’d love to see the full transcripts from the inquiries into the sinking. From the excerpts I’ve heard it seems like the goal of the questions asked was to pretty much crucify Bruce Ismay as a greedy coward who didn’t care about the loss of life that night.
All was well. Calm and peaceful and safe. Then
