The old one was broken in the can itself with a large crack. We had to bring to the landfill and pay to dispose it while to pay a new one. Guess what? The very first time the new bin was picked, the lid cracked into half!. Frankly why would we made to pay again for disposing old broken bin and to buy new ones, when immediately, they are damaged again?

New Trash trucks are now in service that use a blue stripe instead of orange. These new trash trucks use a different arm design that should be gentler to the bin as it does not seem to lift it as high.

In Detroit our receptacles are issued through the city. Similar models can be purchased from hardware stores. But I can't say that our main problem with them is damage. Yes we do have some withr broken limbs, wheels, melted from some freak accident. Our major problem with our cans are holes. Nearly every singles receptacle that are not stored inside a garage or shed, have holes in them from squirrels, cats, and raccoons. It's crazy.

The city created a problem whereas the cans are now a valued commodity, especially in areas which arent all single family homes. My girlfriend rented an apartment in ocean beach, it did not have a container. This block is mostly apartments. Most dont have containers leaving a half dozen apartment dwellers trying to stuff trash into one bin not there own.
If she steps up and buys a new can for $95, it will be appropriated by someone a block away in the middle of the night. If she marks it to prevent that the trucks destroy it in a few months.
The city needs to fund new cans, and replace bad ones as necessary. If not then public health issues will arise as well as costs for missed pickups.

The main reason these cans are breaking is because they are being squeezed to tight by the side arms as the cans are being lifted. They need a sensor built in to prevent over squeezing.

This is an issue since it's the city/government trucks that are destroying them. They charge $70 to replace PLUS $25 to deliver on something they busted and mostly due to not operating the claw properly. The claw that grabs the cans crushes them when not operated properly. Distracted drivers or in a hurry, i do not know but I've seen cans last pretty long till you get the wrong person and there it went... The customer should not have to pay to replace when it's the operaters error and misuse of equiptment...

In other Cities you have to pay for garbage Pickup. So in my opinion 40 bucks for a new Can is ok but then I like to buy a good unit and not a cheap shit which breaks again after 2 weeks.

It's the brand companies are buying now which it's otto. Otto is a horrible brand that breaks easily, my trash company calmet services handed out roto industries carts which lasted a long time. In 2016 my city renewed the contract with them and handed out new otto carts and within a year peoples carts kept breaking and the company now buys rehrig which is better but not as good as roto industries. Most of the city has went thru 1, 2 or a while set being replaced which is not okay when we have to pay fr something we didn't break and the company buying cheap containers and not thinking of what's best for the customers
