After what feels like months of silence, an announcement was posted yesterday going over some changes to the new "update pass" subscription model for Clip Studio Paint. In this video we go over the changes announced and I share my opinions about the new direction Clip Studio is taking with their update model.

I want to clarify, because there seems to be some confusion: If you don't want to deal with the subscription at all, your perpetual license for 1.x will still work. Also perpetual licenses for 2.0 and beyond will exist (this is not new info, it was part of their original announcement. The only new part is that now you can upgrade from 1.x to 2.0 at a reduced cost).
Also, an upcoming 2.0 feature I missed is auto-shading AI, which looks really cool!!
Hi MadameBerry! I had a question with the version 2.0. Is it permanent once I purchase it or is it a subscription that I need to update?
@@sherealu464 When you buy 2.0, you will have 2.0 permanently. If you want updated features, then the subscription is an option.
@@madameberry ohhhh I see! Thank you for clarifying i might purchase it now!
I wouldn’t mind paying for updates but the idea that you lose the updates that you already paid for when you end your subscription is just too much. We have to stand up to this subscription model that all companies are trying to force us onto. ‘You will own nothing and you will be happy.’ the World Economic Forum
They can say $10 a year, but once they have you, they can raise the price to $80 a year if they want to. Don't fall for that trap.
THIS. The problem isn't the price, it's that it's only a step. If they feel validated, they'll keep going upwards
Give an inch then they will take a mile as some may say. Lol 😂
I stll do not understand why you keep saying that 28.99 per year is worth it for a software you have already paid for.. That just sux no matter how I look at it..
If paying the equivalent of a single nice meal out once per year keeps the software up and running and pays for new updates for a company that's likely hit close to market saturation and needs to find new revenue streams, then yeah, it's worth it.
Also the subscription is *optional*. You can keep using 1.x or 2.0 without subscribing.
I'm not defending CSP because at this point they've made even more egregious decisions, but just from a cost analysis $30 a year is NOT a lot for a professional software of this caliber. Consider that I just paid $100 to upgrade from Affinity 1 to Affinity 2. That's the perspective I'm coming from as a professional when considering the prices of things.
Subscription services make the developers of apps lazy because they are already getting your money. Don't support subscriptions. Get them to EARN the money by providing customers with a good solid UPGRADE VERSION to motivate us to buy the UPGRADE. I say NO to subscription services. Don't fall for that trap!
How do expect a company to stay active and profitable off one time purchases?
@@imthatguybrandon well make a option not a force choice you can do sub if you want to :)
It literally is an option. It's not forced. Please read my pinned comment.
@@madameberry so i can still buy the ex version without paying for the sub right ? :D
Yes, though to get updates past 2.0 you will need the sub. But it's still optional and 2.0 will work indefinitely.
"We have heard you complaining about updates subscriptions, well, here you have other things unrelated to it"
Yeah, they have listened
nah not worth it, not everyone came from america just just have 1 hour = 15$, especially Japanese fbf animators 1 frame = 1$+ same with other people from poor Asian countries only have 1 hour = 0.77$ like vn while they have to pay their bills just like other people on the world, yeah what do i care, just to let you know even anime company used pirate after all
The price will continue to go up! Once they have you, they will get a lot more money out of you in the future. A lot more. This is bait to get you to subscribe. Stay with version 1 or the perpetual version of v2, but don't pay anything more for updates, extras, etc. That is a trap. Don't support subscription and they will come back to buying with updates without subscriptions. They will fool us only if we support the subscription payments. Don't go subscription!
You've left three comments across two of my videos, lol I hear you. Don't get the subscription if you don't want to.
10-30$ will increase, you have to be naive to think they won't raise the price. Many have done it and this is no exception. "oh the wifi only cost 112 $ a month! then out of nowhere, it cost 150$ a month! if u want smooth internet etc2 ... like you gotta be joking🤣CSP is on damage control while still insisting on this subscription shit. Edit: If something is too good to be true it probably is not especially after what happened. I Can't Believe you would Flip just because they Throw you A Mackerel ...
They can't raise it too much or it literally out prices the normal subscription.
Also I can praise a thing done better even if the overall outcome is still imperfect. It's called ✨nuance✨
I don't mind the prices - they are fine. What I don't like is that the upgrade plan seems to have been written by a lawyer instead of a company that cares about its users. It's too complicated and misleading. As for "V2.0". The features are quite underwhelming. Even more 3D nonsense that only applies to a niche group of users instead of everyday users. But of course it's "smarter" to wait with the better features until later when you need the update pass to rent them. The only thing that matters to me is auto-saving in the background, which isn't even a real feature but a fix. This one should be implemented in V1 as well as a fix. Being interrupted during painting every 5 minutes is a pain in the backside. So when boiling it down, I have to paint $20 for not being interrupted during painting every 5 minutes. Sounds odd, right? Well it is. Celsys could have gone the route of a simple, traditional upgrade (which already would have ruffled some feathers), but instead they chose this weird way which makes little sense and put a huge dent into the reputation of the company. But they probably it's worth the money.
So they went from trying to rip everyone off with confusing plans to doing what most other art software does. I guess it's progress :)
I'm just glad that the people who bought CSP super recently before the announcement are getting a bit of compensation for having bought a software version that will soon stop being updated (and also the upgrade discount for everyone else is good).
I will not buy CSP as long as there's a sub. Don't care if you can buy the default 2.0 version without the sub, and that the sub is only an update. Updates will get stacked in time, plus what so many enjoyed about it was it being one-time payment. Making new version for us to pay again is ok, but paying for the sub no matter how much cheaper they make it is not ok. You should be allowed to keep the product that you paid for, not rent it then lose it when you don't have enough money. 25 dollars during like a discount is still better than 10 dollars per year.
still bad. i'm all for nuance and understanding they're running a business and i promise i say this in good faith. but they need to give us a one time payment alternative for the subscription updates, even if it's something like the pro and ex packages they had before, even if it comes out months after the subscription or whatever other compromise there is. i just need it to EXIST. i cannot morally support a subscription based payment, especially from an app who is specifically used by artists to *avoid* subscription programs. it's predatory, and its implications for the future (and frankly present) of business and capitalism makes my head hurt. (if i was cynical, i would think that this was a deliberate move to make people forget that it's subscription model we're mad about, that things aren't as bad because the previous announcement was worse.)
There literally still are one-time payment options. In fact one of the announcements is that they're letting you upgrade from 1.x to 2.0 at a reduced cost instead of paying full price a second time. They never took the one-time payment option away even in the first announcement.
Thanks for this explanation !! I was interested in tryin it out but didn't understand what the drama was about!! 😅
The drama is that if you want updates, you have to pay for a subscription. Updates to version 2 should not require a subscription if you buy the perpetual license. Only major UPGRADES should require a subscription with an option to buy the perpetual license without forced subscriptions to get the updates. I hope this clarifies the drama going on.
@@kjbill thank you !
Yeah, I'm still not supporting them after their subscription as it looks like a publicity stunt. Krita + Rakurri's brushes is a better tool set if you like digital painting. Krita has better reference tools as it can be done via the clipboard.
I'm an EX User of CSP.... 6:28 Classic case of razor and blades... AKA Having the pro being fairly cheap, till you realize you don't own it and is disposed of. The license BS hits like for me where I want the desktop version on two devices and SIMULTANCE USE OF SAID DEVICES. The two devices, four are flipping the bill for everyone else..... THIS IS SO THEY CAN GET PEOPLE TO BUY THE SUBSCRIPTION, Wait till they jack it up.
8:21 I am gonna wheeze so hard, krita has the top left hand corner BEAT HEAVILY. Krita doesn't suffer that issue.
Krita I would say is the better program these days if you are a digital painter, but if you do line art, CSP is better. Krita is catching up in features and is in development to improve even faster.
Tbh I haven't used krita since probably 2010 or earlier, and it was pretty rough back then. I should redownload it and give it a try.
@@madameberry you should
I honestly don't think few new updates that they have laid out so far as a honeytrap for 2.0 is worth the money- even at a reduced price- and that is basically because of the update pass subscription model. My concern is that they started off saying "new feature updates will not be provided free of charge" and "you will still need to purchase an Update Pass in order to get access to new feature updates (2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, etc.)". But now they are saying that the update pass is an "optional plan for early access to features that will be included in Ver. 3.0 and later". To me this means that nothing about that changed from their original announcement and if you ever want the updated features that we used to get regularly in v1.x, you will have to pay for it. The wording of calling it "early access for 3.0 features" also makes me think that once 3.0 comes along, the update pass for 2.0 will become invalid and you'll be forced to upgrade again if you don't want to use the vanilla 2.0 features.
If the base vanilla version of 2.0 is going to be basically almost the same as 1.0 without an update pass, that is not worth it at all :( And all of this mostly sucks because beginner artists who can't afford things are the ones who are suffering the most from this kind of situation. Artists who aren't as established as others depend on this program a lot.
Given what features we've seen teased for 2.0 (particularly the new color mixing mode and auto-lighting feature) they're big enough to warrant a jump in version IMO. Also there is no "update pass for 2.0" that will become invalid at 3.0. The update pass is for 12 consecutive months of updates, regardless of version. That's how it's always been proposed.
Other than that, yeah, I don't love that purchasing 2.0 gets you zero updates past that. It seems antithetical to most business models regarding version updates. But I can acknowledge that this is better, especially for people who purchased CSP recently unknowing of the upcoming announcement, who now have at least a little compensation for not having the years of use and updates that long-time buyers got.
@@madameberry The validity of the 2.0 update pass was an opinion I based on what they've said but when I mentioned how the pass actually works, I was quoting what the first announcement said about the update pass. There's a part about feature updates where they say you have to pay for an update pass if you want anything beyond basic 2.0 (2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, etc.) But their updated statement is confusing because it now says that you are only paying for 12 months of "early access for 3.0 features". It just sounds like they changed the wording to make people believe they don't need a pass for updates?
I'm not sure if that makes sense but that's what it sounds like to me. I mostly want to know if the update pass is actually for updates or are they "early access features" for 3.0 like they claimed.
Hm. Yeah the wording change is strange. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to marketing semantics, but we'll see. Hopefully it's flat 12 months of updates.
I already paid. Im not going to keep paying them money. I will find another program.
You can continue using the version you currently own until it no longer works on your computer, which will likely be many years from now.
@@madameberry Who know when will it not work on my computer, tech keep moving on everyday
Color Meal! I'm even more depressed about 2.0, because I got CSP 2 months before Jan 2022 so I'm not eligible. Should've waited 2 months longer to buy it. Oh well. 1.0 gang for life!
Can I get a refund? I bought it recently and I the fact that you have to pay for updates and then lose it when you stop paying is a bummer. It's like a video game pass. Pirating made less sense when you continually get updates but this is just pushing more people to do that instead.
You'll have to contact customer support for that. I'm not someone who can help with this, I just use the program.
I wasnt going to bother getting version 2 and over since I'm perfectly fine with how things work now, but I can see how these small changes will help to make some people less angry about the changes
its bad enough Konami is getting my money for yugo cards. . . but after hearing how the creator of the game passed, its my honor to play his game and honor his legacy.
Celsys doesnt care about artists, they didnt actually listen, they doubled down on the subscription bullshit. Sure the prices are reasonable now, but whats stopping them from escalation in the future? if you give these pricks an inch they will take the whole damn world with their greed. No. as an indie and a hobbyist, celsys is dead to me after stabbing me in the back. My new weapon of choice for comic creation on the computer is Inkscape for word balloons and symbol libraries, Krita for the meat of the illustration, Blender for all my 3d needs, and Affinity suite for preparing my work for print.
For spitting on indies and starving artists, Celsys ur dead to me. i wont be giving you anymore money. id sooner wipe my ass with a blue eyes white dragon, and Blue eyes was my first ultra rare card and the reason i got into the tcg.
The subscription is still optional
Thank god CSP is getting their stuff back together.
I'm still a long dead customer of theirs after buying EX. Subscription service plans are just a scam. Krita + Karurri's brushes = Better if you are a digital painter.
I originally wanna to buy Clip Studio Paint at November until I saw the news from the software. I'm living in The Netherlands and I don't know if it would affected in my country. But I was in doubts if I want to buy that software in the first place. But now that Clip Studio Paint made a second announcement, I'm still gonna buy Clip Studio Paint for the first time in November.
I hope you enjoy using it! If you need any assistance, I have a few tutorial videos on my channel.
@@madameberry thanks🙂
Why dont they make it onetime app purchase and the coming update can also purchase.🤔
With the whole Clip studio paint student thing, I’m personally not sure that would work, just because when I was in my university, we ask our head of our course who was our teacher as well about using Clip studio paint and if we could use it for our work and using it at uni because we have it at home and we can bring in our laptops but we were told that our university wasn’t ever going to get clip studio paint and that we can’t use it and we were told if we used it we would lose marks. 😂😂😅 my teachers are scary 😂 also being a student I’m mostly poor haha 😂.
I get that, some schools/teachers want you to use specific software. It's frustrating.
@@madameberry yep, my uni used Adobe, tv paint, Maya and that’s it, it was so stressful though Covid and we couldn’t get tv paint for animation at home and some with Maya due to their computers/laptops being bad with Maya, so we ask about clip studio paint for 2D and parts for 3D work and blender 3D but we were told if we use it that we would be marked down. Most of us all panicked because of it, some did use clip studio paint but had to move the animation to premiere pro or after effects to make it look like the same quality on tv paint and the whole class helped them to hide them using CSP which help but some close calls. 😂👍🏻
@melissaallport2001 omg. This was for game development, but in like 2013 we were all being taught Maya and UDK but then Unreal announced UDK was becoming obsolete and my department panicked and just let us use whatever we wanted 😂
@@madameberry oh god I wish I had that 😂😂 my course is so strict and stressful and limited
how is it my clip studio is still in 1.0? I had ex since the end of 2021.
I still dont know how to pay for this product without paypal XD
Let me know if I'm wrong but I'm a CSP EX user to update to version 2.0 I'll have to pay 57$, to get updates beyond 2.1to 2.9 I'll have to pay 30$. Total of 87$ for a year(consider 2.0 will last one year).
Correct, if you want to own 2.0. From my understanding you can use the update pass without owning the perpetual license for 2.0
@@madameberry wish they could lower the cost for ex, 30$ extra is a bit much.
They didn't remove gthe trap, they jsut made it more alluring in the short term.
Do I love this model? No. But are they trapping you into something? Literally no lol
I was about to quit using CSP after being upset towards the controversial decision made by them until I saw this and the news caught me of. Glad that I can get to keep my brushes and presets from my one time (ver 1) purchase for illustration CSP account. Now I'm excited to try out the new updates and I am now attending art school so wish me luck!
Thank you Berry and also the team of CSP for listening to our feedbacks.
Look at the fine print. It is still rent-ware
@@robfrydryck127so if you unsubscribe It all goes away?? Or that the tools you bought at 1.0 remain and the rest goes away?
But you still loose all updates when you don't continue the update passes
True. But at $10 a *year* they would be literally giving the program away if they let you stay at your current version. Also that's how subscriptions normally work. Do I love product-as-service and subscription models? No. But this is a huge step to rectify most of what made this model so disappointing.
@@madameberry that's true. They adjusted it at least a bit and that's way better than what they first planned. And if the head 3d model and new blending are in the standard 2.0 version than that should be enough for most artists i think
I also saw a screenshot of an "auto light" feature (like that one app that was trending a little while ago where you can move the light source and it automatically applies highlight and shadow). I don't have a source on that screenshot but that's a huge feature for 2.0 if it's true!
(update: found the source! www.clipstudio.net/en/news/202210/13_01/ )
@@madameberry and with time that price will increase more and more thanks to people that payed for it at the start, even if they don't like that business model.
Supporting something you don't like... That's a nice way to say: you can do whatever you want from now on, even if it's trash, and we will stick to it no matter what.
Ooh I guess this is a good thing but at the same time Idk if I can trust them because idk how long the version 2.0 will be supported and update by them since they have already announced version 3.0
Yeah I don't like how they're moving to yearly releases, but they've extended 1.0 support to be past 3.0, so I expect 2.0 will probably be supported for a few years at least, and then you'll still be able to use it after it stops updating (remember, people still use really old versions of Photoshop and such even though they haven't gotten updates in almost 10 years)
@@madameberry oooh yea that makes sense actually 🤔 I might consider buying it now since version 1.0 is good already and I'll get the free 2.0 version if I buy it now
So, I have the Perpetual Liscense for Version 1.0 (not sure when exactly was it that I paid for it).
That means I can upgrade to 2.0 through whichever mean and I still own the program, I'm not subjected to any subscription stuff, correct?
Yes. If you purchased it after January of 2022 it will be a free upgrade, and if not you can use the upgrade discount, but either way you will not need to subscribe unless you also want versions after 2.0
Yes, but you will not get updates unless you subscribe. That’s the problem. If we buy 2.0, we should get updates. Upgrades are a different story.

Even before this announcement, in 1.0, tablet/mobile device licenses were a subscription. That hasn't changed.
@@madameberry yes wich is stupid... ill just keep my version 1 to use forever on my PC then.
Now CLP only needs to stop suddenly -*deleting the changes of a whole session without warning and no retrievable autosaving. Right now using CLP means using Krita...*Suddenly the screen is white and then appears the Grey White chequered layer "surface". reopening the file leaves you with the state of the session before the crash. Some crashes allow for going back with ctrl z, some not. Dedicated memory on my pc is good (32 GB system memory ~ 10 dedicated layer count 1 to 5 max. with X-Pen 15.6 Pro). Despite being my favoured software I switched to Krita. Any idea?
This honestly sounds like either some kind of hardware incompatibility or software corruption. Have you attempted uninstalling completely (and removing any temporary setting files that might linger) and re-installing? I've literally never had this happen on any of the machines I use CSP on so your best bet might be contacting customer support, because it would be very hard for me to diagnose your issue via youtube comments.
@@madameberry Hi, I didn't expect that you provide support! So a 30'' screen sized thank you! This is already very helpful! CLP is indeed not listed as compatible with X-Pen! However I hadn't experienced that from early on (~ 1/2 a year ago)! X-Pen seems generally to be a bit of a wanderer between the worlds! 💐Congratulations for your success! Keep up the good work!
I was thinking it was probably more of an issue with your laptop/desktop rather than your screen, as file information is not stored within the monitor of a PC. Unless XP Pen has a computer option I'm not aware of?
@@madameberry That happened with different files. And in the cases where I could reverse with ctrl + z, I could continue working. X-Pen is known for certain instabilities. It's programmable hotkey buttons sometimes stop working. However it is 15.6'' HD screen nice colours and a few thousand pressure levels for 400 bucks. BUT, I took a look at the PCL message board, found the update and installed it. I will check it out in "manual auto-save mode"😉 Krita is the next best low/no budget alternative, but I had become very fond of PLC's selection brush and the one-click delete for the selection tools😉
@@boredgrass Ah. I hope you find a solution that stops this from happening!
Now while I don't plan to buy 2.0 and while I'm not fully happy with what this news bring, there is one thing that I could look forward if I want to update to 2 .0 or more to 3.0 is and I honestly could be wrong but doesn't Clip Studio do Special offers throughout the year to make it cheaper or to get it easier for someone. So I could wait for that point in time and update then now knowing the prices won't be too bad.
They have often done sales throughout the year, though I don't know if they'll keep that habit up when the new system is in place. I sure hope so.
@@madameberry I hope so too, it’s something to see how it goes since it was how I myself got clip studio EX. Even with a cheap subscription model, I don’t think it’s a good idea to get rid of in my opinion a pretty good way of convincing customers to get their product with a cheaper price now and then.
EX users gotta pay triple the price for that bare bones upgrade to 2.0 that PRO pays 20$ for
Huh? EX is a $220 program, do you expect them to not make the upgrade reflect that?
Madame, the problem is we already paid more. And the animation tools are not even the focus of most updates - illustration ones are. We should not have to pay more just to mantain our base tools
In that case it sounds like sticking with 1.x will be fine for you. No need to spend more money if you're happy with the toolset you own.
Also EX has features for comic artists as well that 2.0 seems to be improving upon. I'm not sure that they've announced all their features yet but the ones they did announce will also synergize well with the current comic/3D features in EX.
Hey I’m sorry guys but I was wondering if anyone could help me?
I just bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 plus for my first ever digital art and in preparation I bought the Pro license for $50. When I finally got my Tab all set up and installed CSP, I went to sign in and it asked me for a 13 digital activation code, which I didn’t have, I have a 20 something digit license key. I kept trying but eventually my only option was to do the 6 months free and then do the monthly pricing. Does that cover the new upgrade to 2.0 and any upgrades to it after that if I am paying monthly? Also, am I now stuck with having to figure out what to do with a $50 license key for Windows/Mac OS when I bought it too soon to realize there was only the monthly plan available for Samsung/Android tablets? And how do I go about giving the license key away to some other new artist that uses Mac or Windows PC that could use it?
Thanks guys. Im obviously very VERY new to the community. I’ve been a traditional artist for years and years but the learning curve for digital is unreal. I had to buy the full Ibis Paint and then get the premium version because I wasn’t ready for Clip Studio Pro. I’ve spent A LOT of money this week just to start digital art and I’ve already made some less than great choices. ANY help than anyone could give is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
So they don't have a Perpetual license for tablets, it's subscription-only, and the subscription plans are staying exactly the same as they already are; the new pricing plans don't apply to the subscription plans. That is to say, you'll get to keep your current plan when the changes roll over.
You may be able to contact Celys for a refund for that license key, since you don't realize those keys didn't apply to tablets. I'm not sure what their customer service is like, so I can't guarantee they'll refund you but it doesn't hurt to ask.
If you end up wanting to give it away, though, probably your best bet would be to make a post on social media somewhere and then DM the first person who reaches out.
How should I get the CSP pro 2.0 version without paying every month?
There's an option to buy it once, but it only gets bug fixes if you do that. That's what I did
I'm thinking about picking this up for the first time(pro version, one time purchase). I didn't realize until tonight there was any kind of kuffuffle around their payment structure. I don't mind paying for good software, but I can understand why long time users would have a problem with it.
so, if I own print studio ex, I have to pay 50 bucks this year?
Like the video and the pinned comment explains, you have options. If you want the new features coming in 2.0. Otherwise you still own 1.0 and can use it without having to buy anything new.
If I buy a CSP monthly subscription right now, Can I use the 2.0 version of CSP?
I believe the answer is yes, the sub will give you the most up to date version and you can use it until you cancel the sub. But check on the website to make sure.
@@madameberry as your advice, I buy the mon. subscription, Thank You 😀.
That's better. I can live with this.
so if i buy a one purchase will be a subscription? i've been trying find an accessible program for manga because i'm disabled is it worth a try?
No, if you buy a Perpetual license, you will own that version of the program indefinitely. Subscription is only if you want the updates between 2.0 and 3.0. You'll get a free 6-month trial of those updates but it'll revert when the trial ends and you won't have to subscribe unless you really want to keep using those updates.
I'm not sure what your accessibility needs are. I think clip studio is a great program, but without knowing if you need certain features, I can't say whether it would be accessible for you or not.
I do have some other videos on the tools in the program if you want to take a look and judge for yourself though.
