I'm seeing too many people get some key points wrong when it comes to Clip Studio Paint's update pass - and there are other things I don't think people are talking about ENOUGH. So let's talk about them.

The one thing I don't like about their model is the fact that 1.x users don't get that much value from updating to 2.0. Imho it would've been better to pay for 2.0 and get all 2.x updates and then whenever they feel like it's worth another update, release 3.0 and sell a license that includes all 3.x updates
YES. That model is pretty much the standard for everything else. Another comment said that the way CSP updates is just how it's done in Japan? I don't know enough about that, but maybe it's just done differently.
I bought 2.0 for life after having a 1.0 subscription. The features it provides are good enough and I don't need much more. $50 for the lifetime. And like you said, the subscriptions are not too expensive.
CSP definitely did a horrendous job communicating, plus I still their their subscription vs. license is needlessly complicated. Either way: People definitely blew it out of proportion. CSP wasn't going to live forever by honoring $20 licenses 10+ years later.
Yeah, I understand why they went this route. At the very least, paid version upgrades (1.0 to 2.0 to 3.0 etc) are pretty standard.
So I had no idea about the chaos online, I bought the app for 50, used it a bit, then thought will come back. I use it on my laptop, as of now I am find only having it on that device. If i professional enough to need it on my iPad, i may pay that amount. I think it’s valid for companies to charge for updates. And technically 2.0 is more than enough for me. I bought 1.0, and they let me upgrade to 2.0, i do not need any new upgrades, 3d , animation, multi pages etc. i just been basic drawing and painting features.
People who need advance features are probably way more advance and earning an income from this
All these companies seeing Adobe getting away with murder with this always online DRM monthly subscription stuff fully missing the point that Adobe DEFINED THE INDUSTRY and had the power to do a terrible move like that. It's so sad to see such good software being slowly dismantled so the company can make a few extra bucks.
Adobe is pretty much like Apple of multimedia industry, Wacom starting act like Apple too by selling separate items
Wdym separate items? Like the pen no longer comes with the tablet or something?
@@madameberry probably, I was referring to this ua-cam.com/video/HEm8T8nwo8g/v-deo.html
Haha ooh boy that is BAD
Thanks for this video.
After all the miscommunication flustercuck sort of cooled down and things became kind of clearer, I was finally tempted to go 2.0 and see what's what, and also simply to support a honestly awesome piece of software that helped me quite a bit.
But now, them trying to sneak in new restrictions like that pissed me off all over again. The limitations on the second device especially is a deal breaker for me. I use the dual license thing a lot, and I live in a third world country where 100 US bucks worth of licenses for a program that I use from time to time as a secondary income crutch is A LOT.
If push comes to shove, I'll gladly go back to piracy, and fuck this noise. And that pisses me off, because dog knows I tried hard to play by the rules.
This is so true. I don't know about the usa, but in south america the price is outrageous, are we supposed to just not make digital art lol?
When I lived outside of US, I'd pirate this stuff without any guilt because these prices are meant for a completely different economic situation and there's no adjustment for international users.
Honestly, i don't want to upgrade because im fine with 1.0 ( for what i do, im fine ,with it ! ) Thank you for making this video because i was not aware of how confusing Csp communication is for this!
Piracy is always morally correct...
"piracy is not a pricing issue, but a service issue, and that the best way to stop piracy is to offer better services than the pirates" - gabe
@@maccagaming935that’s not true, even an amazing service people rather have it for free
With all of this I'm glad I got 1.0 and haven't upgraded, and I won't be upgrading until they get their act together.
There's a sale rn so I might get clip studio paint (it's like 20 dollars until the 25th) but the update pass (10 dollars) doesn't sound bad
In hesitating bc my art isn't detailed or realistic or anything so I'm not sure I need all the features so I should get 1.0? (If that's possible I'm not good at this)
It's not possible to buy previous versions anymore, when you buy the program now you automatically get 3.0. But it's the same price as 1.0 used to be (I think) and the sale rn is really good!
the whole clip studio subscription thing just confused so many people and not knowing how many times you can switch between devices is so confusing and a PITA. I like the program but they sure are making a lot of dumb choices in how things are done.
Definitely not the type of company practice I would like to support. Restrictive, opaque and hostile. Ditched adobe for their tactics and not about to jump over to another smaller company already starting to show similar signs. Even if its "the best" I'll choose a lesser program rather than comply to corporate greed. Thanks for the informative video.
Thank you for making this video. I'm glad I haven't upgraded and won't be unless they change this. What a bunch of user-hostile nonsense! Which is a shame, I love the software and otherwise have been enjoying learning how to use it.
How did you upgrade to version 2.0? I tried to purchase another one-time license with my prepaid debit cards and by PayPal. For several months, nothing had worked! The company won't accept my payment methods. What should I do?
I would contact the official support channels.
I don't draw that much so i can't really justify another subscription for something I only use once in a while, so if it will be a subscription only in the future, they'll essentially loose me as their customer 👍
For now, I will keep using it, although I won't say I trust them and I will try out and consider switching to alternatives.
Thanks for the clarifications but my trust is not really there anymore so to say and I need to have some trust in the tools I'm using.
Very important and informative video! ❤️
They've done so much to shatter customer trust. It's so sad because the program genuinely has some of the best features on the market, but it's hard to encourage others to try it out now.
I started my Clip Studio journey with 2.0 of the EX version on the black Friday sale, and I haven't noticed any issues. The price for the perpetual license was very reasonable, and I'll get version 3.0 for free when it is released in 2024. That's at least the promise. I would love to see a perpetual iPad Pro license, but I also get (being a developer myself) that such a big application needs some recurring revenue to feed the people behind it. It is the common issue of rising prices. If Clip Studio 1 had started with a single PC license and an online mode, nobody would care if version 2.0 had done the same.
However, I wouldn't say I like the information strategy, especially in Germany. The website needs to look better, more organized, and more professional. Some real geeks without sales and PR knowledge are doing the distribution work. It looks like a student project hacked together within a few hours.
CSP is made by a Japanese company, which adds a whole new level of confusion. Japanese users have been more accepting of CSP's changes because CSP is a professional tool, they understand them better, and this current way they've been doing things has been how it's done in Japan for a while now before the worldwide changes.
I feel like this kind of stuff wouldn't have been this complicated if they did a comb over with someone outside the Japanese market.
That being said, I also love using CSP and use it both on PC and iPad, but iPad is running on a separate subscription through the app store.
That's interesting, I didn't know software services worked differently there. I'm not nearly as upset by the subscription as I am by the other changes I mentioned in this video, but it's still interesting to know that a lot of it boils down to a cultural difference.
I agree with a lot of things that you said because I was using it on my laptop and then I will switch back and forth from my laptop to my phone and they told me I need to pay for another license for another device that really burned me up I end up writing to them about a lot of things and they take forever to get back to resolve the problems it's a great program yes do I like how it feels yes but some of the programs problems needs to be resolved
Version 1 does pretty much anything I would want to do and there aren't enough new features offered on 2.0 for me to justify the cost all over again just for those features. When you combine that fact with all of the shenanigans they've pulled over the last year --- no chance they get more of my money.
I'm going to stick with 1.0 because the surface and pc combo is just too good to lose.
I don't know how I missed this video but thank you for the info. I already knew that the subscription was optional, but was skeptical of trying vr 2.0 because of not being able to use software offline. I'm glad to hear that they lengthen the limit to log back in the software, but I wish the communication was presented clearly.
Honestly I'm not surprised the reason why I kept the old version. Hopefully theres going to be an alternative soon.
I still think this whole "update pass" thing is just to ease people into the thought of paying a recurring subscription service for Clip Studio. Hopefully Clip Studio Paint 3 won't be a monthly subscription Adobe style, but I'm not really convinced it won't be.
I can't afford a subscription that will be without a doubt extremely expensive in my country because Celsys only sells stuff with the "main" currencies, so if an obligatory subscription is put in place I sure hope Krita managed to make their text editor something that's usable by then.
I'd be interested to know the number of people subscribed to the update pass. I can't imagine it's performing well.
I lost my v1 license because I don't have access to the computer that it was installed on and I can't deactivate it now
We see if my agriness ever do down?
I think you can deactivate licenses from your new computer but don't take my word for it. I just vaguely remember doing that myself I think.
Nah the subscription price is ridiculous
when I upgraded to 2.1, on my COMPUTER mind you, I couldn't use the program unless I had an updated pass. When I contacted support, they told me I had to have the updated pass to use 2.1. period. I'm fine with 2.0, it works like I want it to, but 2.1 is the one that's making you have a pass or sub to use it and that's what's got me miffed.
Yes, that's what I explained in the video. 2.0 is perpetual, update pass gets you the updates between 2.1 and 3.0
I’m actually really happy to see what they’ve done as of late. A more expensive perpetual license is the way to go. If you have someone that doesn’t know how long they’ll be using it, then offering a subscription model is available. 10/30 bucks per year is great. If you intend on using this for more than 5 years, GET THE INCENSED VERSION. I do agree that the prior decisions were at best unclear and ill thought out. Hopefully the current model will serve their company well with making profit. They will need to keep things the way they are in order to rebuild trust.
It's amusing as always to see how completely companies lose the quality of service battle to pirates.
yeah I was worrying about it before, but then I thought Oh well I've always had a sub, because I want to have it on both the desktop and the ipad (the sub is for using on two devices). Now my quandary is whether I want to buy outright at the moment!
It costed me as much as my whole rent to get 2.0. And then i got to know ill need to pay even more to get updates to it. It just made me so sad. I wasted a whole months worth of rent on a shitty eyelens perspective, a head 3d base that isnt actually useful because i draw cartoons, camra hand posing, a pretty bad shading assist, basic alignment and liquify features that should have been in the original. Only thing that felt worth it was the new blending options
I couldn't subscribe even if I wanted to, because I don't have a credit card.
i must be in the minority, as i am able to use 2.0 on my computer and 1.0 on my own surface tablet just fine.
i guess it could be because my surface has the Pro version and my PC has the EX version
that's probably it, since they're two different activation keys.
This sounds a whole lot like I’m sticking with version 1.
Great video. I've been trying to figure out whether or not to upgrade and all the misinformation left me very confused.
I think I'll stick V.1 for now and wait and see what happens with V.3
"The limit does not exist"
I experienced this too, glad you are bring awareness!
I'm trying to kill my tablet sub because i have 2.0 on pc and was hoping that because I bought it that I would be able to use on my tab via authorization code. My head hurts with how confusing that all sounds and I'm almost ready to give up on clip all together
I think tablet and mobile has to use sub, there's no perpetual option for tablet/mobile
@@madameberry thanks for the clarity that really sucks. I've been paying the sub for about 2-3 years. And now that I got the pc version, Imight just cancel mobile and find something different.
Hi super great video and I was wondering on getting clip studio paint and csp 3.0 is coming out in March this year so should I wait n get csp 3.0 ex or and also I was wondering if I want to get a drawing tablet do I have to re buy csp for the drawing tablet if I were to get it on my MacBook?
Check and see if they'll upgrade you to 3.0 for free if you buy it now, or if that deal expired already. Also it depends with a drawing tablet -are you getting an iPad to draw on, or a USB tablet that plugs into your Mac? If it's an iPad you'd need the subscription but if it's a USB tablet then it just uses your Mac and you won't need to re-but CSP.
@@madameberry I was thinking of getting the Huion kamvas 16 pro plus
Yeah that's the kind that plugs into your existing computer, so you don't need a second copy of CSP
Can you use a program on both PC and tablet off of a singular account
I think you can use the same *account* but they are different subscriptions so you can't use both off the same payment.
I upgraded, I'm loving it. But I've used a subscription from the start, so its fine for me.
The transparent gif function in 2.1 is tempting me but so far I haven't used any of the new features in 2.0 at all.
I updated of 2.1 like month ago without any subscription payment. So you don't have to stay only 2.0 to not update with subscription.
Interesting, I'm curious how? Because when I try, it says I'm downloading a *trial* of 2.1
@@madameberry don't know if you deleted my comment but is really rude of you to deleted it that you could get 2.1.0 without payment subscription. I going to repeat again and screenshot it

How *_DARE_* Celsys try to make money on the software they develop!
I have no problem with paying a license fee. I just think it's misleading to say, "hey, here's a perpetual license of CSP", without clearly clarifying exactly what that means when you go against the software industry norms, where if you buy a particular version of a product, you get the updates for that major version too.
Well, not in the case of CSP. You need to get further a update subscription. If you cancel that subscription, you don't get to keep the updates you received and revert back to the perpetual licensed version -- worst part is that you continue paying the update pass subscription to keep the updates even when they no longer produce updates for a particular version.
It really feels like their perpetual license model is intentionally misleading and feels like it's taking advantage of people where they fall into a sunk cost fallacy.
