Rad vid for a rad loop. The groups set is a not an issue. You did it. No single tracks and ultra steep bits so you good. It’s an expensive one, but other than that, got it handled. Gave of some VC story telling with your own vibes man. Nice work.
@@celestialemissary49341:1 is plenty for most gravel, just not ideal for riding muddy singletrack. You can swap to GRX 2x cranks to get lower gearing that’ll be plenty for pretty much anything.
That weir crossing in your video reminded me of a ride I did around 20 years ago , Oaks Trail from Woodford back to Glenbrook, early Saturday morning, middle of summer, already around 32 degrees+. I come down the sealed road at the finish of the ride to the Glenbrook weir……I get near the bottom and see mountain bikes laying around everywhere on the roadside…….as I progress a bit further I see around 30+ riders all swimming and splashing in their cycling gear, waist deep in the water, yelling at me “come in, come in, the water’s awesome”. Having no towel, only my cycling gear with me, and a 50km car trip home once I return to the car I politely decline. But it’s one of those moments forever etched in your mind…..such a good vibe with people just having a great time after a ride on a filthy hot day.
Gravel feels like 25% harder for the same numbers on the road. Think it's the chop and inconsistent power that gets you. Gotta shoot over your sustainable power a lot to get over obstacles or just to keep a nice line.
I remember riding the big hill in this video back in year 9 (many many years ago now) as part of riding Bowral to Canberra for a school activity week. It was much much slower haha. In my defence I crashed heavily on the prior descent. One of my schoolmates hung back with me and made sure I got to the top. He’s been my best mate ever since. Quite a significant hill in my life!
I just got into MTB after road cycling and couldn’t help but notice how serious-faced the gravel crowd is around Kuringai and Duffys. Glad to see you guys keep it light hearted!
Enjoyed this content!! Left a comment today on the previous episode about interviewing Dylan Johnson. Reviewing your experience with him would be great content along with his new bike company relationship and MidSouth gravel race!
Forgive the basic question but : You wear a HJC Furion 2.0 helmet, I think. Can you slot glasses into the front of it for storage? Considering buying it, but can't find that info.
The editing in this video was just awesome. I love this style of video. Story telling was great, humor was on point, and just overall interesting to watch from start to finish. Cheers!!
I'm running 12 Speed 105 di2 on my Gravel bike. Absolutely love it. GRX is now on a drop-handle Epic HT conversion with an 11*42. That works great too.
I love that loop, going to do it reverse next time. Ollie is a beast, smashed the Cloudride 500 which I also finished, mad respect to him for the win and pace on that course
Great video, really appreciate you sharing all your rising experiences. I was critical of your show for having a very cavalier attitude towards gravel with out having any experience but this is different, I approve !!!
I run 12 Di2 105 on my gravel bike and it has been great so far. I've been using it with an 11 speed 46-36t crankset with no issues. Have only done 800km on the bike with it on but there have been numerous rides through salty water and snow slush. So far so good.
Chris - definitely do more videos like this. Great stuff! Also...come to Texas. Our riding/racing scene here is great. Gravel scene is huge as well. You'd have plenty of places to stay. All of my Aussie friends who have visited us here have loved it.
What was the issue with the 12 speed? I've been riding Ultegra 11 speed for years in the gravel with a Ultegra RX clutched derailleur, I prefer this to the silly gears that many gravel bikes come out with these days.
Backwards camera is top, all the gravel pros need to have this, but I guess there is a huge safety risk in a crash, camera could risk a head injury. But still Kask X GoPro need to figure this out.
well done mate - great ride route, welcome to the ride of the hairy legs, maxxis rambler 40c are the way to go tubeless of course - 35 psi, groupset, the main difference is a 'clutched' rear derailleur (otherwise he bounce off on rough descents - chain) and of course can accommodate a 40/42+ rear cassette for 20% plus climbs. you probably already know this ... just can't get away from bling 😆
@peterharrington8709 I do several strava segments in my area and I am surprised how well they do compared to my efforts with 26mm specialized turbos on road segments. I think they roll pretty good.
@@44boowee Tbf the central ridge on them is a great feature, and yes I've had them out on roadie group rides surprising a few people too. I just find them less confident in corners though, particularly with loose gravel. But then again I'm not a super confident descender on the road. Almost like we went to the same shop, as I've ALSO got a set of Specialized Turbos (30mm) that I run with TPU tubes on some aero rims.
Well done! Thanks for NOT making a serious adventure style video. All the goofs making those need to lighten up. Add some rock music, crack a joke, and get outside!
Suffer-fest? My 140-150 BPM and just 200 watts would have me in a world of pain for a good 50% longer! Gotta love it though 😃 Great video guys.... but go slower next time please! 😂
You guys really just don’t know how to ride easy do you 😂 0.75 IF for 8 hrs… maybe just stick it in the easiest gear and spin up the climbs for a change? Anyway, nice video as always 👌🏼
it can, a light racing hardtail with fast rolling tires would give away very little to these 'gravel' bikes, and in rougher sections, would be easier to ride harder/faster.
I have a hard time feeling sorry for your group set, when I see those poor bastards in the UK riding through rain and miserable conditions all the time
I had to stop watching around the 2min mark. would have loved to watch more but when you have your power overlay and the temperature is in farenheit and the speed in miles. it really disappoints me mate. unwatchable
Chris on a gravel bike? Can't wait for Wednesday lol
well Mohoric won the gravel worlds on Dura-Ace
Plenty of CX World Cup and World Champ wins too, but Chris knows gravel🙄
@@RookYZRM1 well I still would not recommend it for amateur. Lack of gears. At least here where I live you need more than 1:1 ratio

Less worried about the dura ace. More about the road pedals 😆

The additional vibrations increase oxygen consumption as we need to recruit more muscle fibres to counteract the vibrations
Subterfuge! It’s not the groupset that’s objectionable, but the road cleats?! Brother err, what’s that brother?

What a rippa ride! great footage too. love the backwards cam.
Summers is officially not dead 😂😂😂😂😂
Can you elaborate why dura ace sucks for gravel? Is it cause the rear derailer doesn’t have a clutch?
Forgive the basic question but : You wear a HJC Furion 2.0 helmet, I think. Can you slot glasses into the front of it for storage? Considering buying it, but can't find that info.
Nice ride and just the right length of video covering it.

The difference between Dura Ace and GRX is only apparent when you go on the rough stuff.
Then you realise why they made GRX!
A proper clutch on RD and you're good to go!
Looked like great fun, with a great bunch of lads. Really enjoy this videos from you. Thanks.

Nice! Also have an Apex loaded Aspero, and for a low end group its performed so damn admirably! 200+km gravel day is huge though, that'd hurt anyone!
Please share details of the bike spec Thanks. Include specifically what 'sick' CW wheels
How'd you find using road shoes Chris? I'm thinking you did a number on those expensive Nimbl's?

Love the screeching brakes!
Change the rear derailleur, you can keep the cranks and shifters.

Chris you have a gravel groupset with the SRAM Xplr that’s on the S5! You can use the aero 1x as well or just get another chainring ❤️

Sugar power for that all day getting it done vibe. IYKYK.

Summers, Summers, Summers. Has anyone seen Summers?
Youll be doing Unbound soon
Miles and Frankenstein numbers?
You might not want to use your 12sp di2 on gravel because of the insane price tag. :D
Sweet ride yo
Road or MTB shoes?
I cant stop looking at your socks😮😮

So nobody's gonna say anything about the Michael Jackson look, with the black shoes and white socks?

As a complete noob about off-road cycling I just want to ask Why can't this be done in an MTB?
I think you could do it on a hardtail.
it can, a light racing hardtail with fast rolling tires would give away very little to these 'gravel' bikes, and in rougher sections, would be easier to ride harder/faster.
These gravel roads are quite easy. There is no need for a mtb.
Gravel is made for roadies that lack the skill or balls to ride mtb
You’d give up a lot on the road sections without gaining that much on the dirt.
Poor guy at the back getting dropped on the climb
Well done noob, one day you'll be alright 😃
seems like you payed a price for making those jokes on your friend
I have a hard time feeling sorry for your group set, when I see those poor bastards in the UK riding through rain and miserable conditions all the time
I miss watching you ride your bike! not interested in podcasts with the other guy , get back to the rides in Sydney please
Tougher because the chop results in more fatigue and you have tiny sissy arms.
I had to stop watching around the 2min mark. would have loved to watch more but when you have your power overlay and the temperature is in farenheit and the speed in miles. it really disappoints me mate. unwatchable
C = (F-32)*(5/9)
Km = Mi * 1.609
Hope that helps
cant watch the video with those captions, sorry
