Lovely cosy video, I enjoyed watching it while doing some embroidery 😊 I'm not disabled but Chouette made me feel very, very uncomfortable, I just found myself constantly thinking how must your child feel about this. I still felt uneasy even after reading interviews etc. Other then that one, you seemed to enjoy the rest which is great 😊 I'm going to order a copy of 163 days now! xx

A few things in this video making me really homesick for Scotland, your wintry walk footage which looks just like the water of leith, the Macsween veggie haggis, neeps and tatties! 😭😭😭

I found my feelings reading of Chouette were heavily influenced by emotions too. After looking into it, and finding out that both Claire & her daughter are autistic, this made me feel slightly more comfortable than it would of if Claire was not neurodivergent. I’m autistic myself, and don’t see this kind of representation in terms of rich literalness or deep metaphor often. So I felt very emotional. Very seen, but also very vulnerable, and at times uncomfortable. I think it’s a book I’ll reckon with a lot. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

Judging by the comments it seems everyone had a very strong reaction to this book, one way or another. Emotions play such a huge role in our response to a book; I was going through my first round of Ivf at the time, too, so my brain was just shouting NO THANK YOU. ♥️ xx

Good blog. I’m so happy you vlogged this prize again. I read Chouette w/ patron last spring. A wild, uncomfortable read. I read Recovering Dorothy this month. I too appreciated it. I love how the author brought to light the awful treatment of Dorothy’s years of disability as a kind of death. Of all the Wordsworth scholars, thank you Polly Atkin for this and many other insights. However, I was disappointed to learn that this was basically an academic text. I hadn’t expected that. 🪴🏡🌻

I'd thought Chouette came out a few years ago. Either time has no meaning (which, of course that's true!) or perhaps it came out earlier in the States? Or most likely, I am just mistaken. ( ding ding ding ding!) I did read it quite a while ago, but I can't recall if I finished it. I think the main character seemed so isolated from everything around her -- her child, her husband, etc. I'm not disabled, but as a mother of children with relatively minor disabilities, I just could not empathize with the mother in this at all.
