This is awesome Nick. I have a strong love/hate relationship with iRating, so hearing "the first official NASCAR driver to fall below 1,000 iRating" made me feel a little bit better. I'm _almost_ back to 1350, lol.

for sure keep on going. very fascinating to see the rise and fall presented in this way. so many layers of fascination, especially when you start comparing the graphs of particular drivers to each other. I just keep thinking of drivers and imagining what their graph might look like. Who might have the biggest delta between their lowest and highest point?
And if it was possible to truly include all results from all series ever, I bet Dick Trickle woulda been rolling out as the #1 car in his cup starts😂
This is a great way to see who might be the best driver of all time. Statistically I mean I rating you gain and lose based off of your finishes but those consistently winning Will have the highest IRating.
Would never have guessed this was the super project. But this is really cool! Goona be really fun to follow.
I think some future fun things you can look at are how the sport evolved over time with gains/loses, comparing greats at the same point in time and how they evolved (such as Gordon vs Johnson), Look at championship battles, etc. Really a lot of interesting stories that could be shown!
One stat that I am looking at running is % of wins as the #1 car, % as top 5 car, and so on.
@@kneebon5 I think some other cool stats to look at are things like who had the highest IR with no win/before getting their first win, who had the lowest IR to get a win minimum X starts, what race had the highest SOF of all time, and so on. Just some really interesting fun details that can be explored

This is really cool to see! The 90s and 2000s I'm really looking forward to. See what Jeff Gordon managed to reach in his dominance and Jimmie Johnson in his 5 consecutive championship run. Awesome to see irating applied to the real life drivers

This is awesome, I’m the same as you as I could look at this stuff all day lol. Really looking forward to the modern day stats to see how they stack up to the legends. People always want to compare drivers from different eras and I think this is gonna show some surprising results
The problem is irating inflation, as busch series and trucks starts, rookie cup drivers will start out with higher iRatings, raising the higher irating guys in modern day. Will have to look at SoF vs high iR to really see the gap to the rest of their competition
That makes sense considering the progression of competition over the years. Sure the King won 200 races but I’m sure his avg SoF is way lower than the modern guys. Gonna be really interesting to see

I love this! No idea exactly what direction it's going in, but just really interesting data to look at. Definitely hope you decide to take your time with it and find the best version of presentation and narrative you can. As others have said, no need to rush it!

This is actually a cool concept! It'd be exciting to see how drivers rating stack-up once more outside info is collected, such as drivers who raced in other styles of racing (Indycar, Trophy Trucks, F1, Le Mans, etc.) and other stock car series.

As a excel jockey... If you can find out what the exact iRating formula is, you can create a custom function in excel that does that calculation so all you need to do is export the data from racing reference and then run a macro.

@@kneebon5 This is a really cool project and I look forward to what that Earnhart kid does from 79 forward. And, as you get more lower level data, does that cause SOF inflation in the 90's forward resulting in Jimmy Johnson being the first over 10K?
@gregmacgowan9351 yeah there is for sure inflation in irating as it goes, even in the 50s the top guys werent getting to race 2k-4k guys at the end of their careers, so pool of available irating gets larger as well.
This is a seriously cool project! First thing I thought about after watching was the AAA/USAC Stock Car Series. Unfortunately stats on the web for those seem incomplete, but I know USAC themselves are sticklers for keeping stats, so it might be worth it for someone to reach out to them for more complete stats on that series? I'm also wondering if the current ASA ownership would know where to find records for the previous iterations of the various ASA Stock Car series. Keep it up!
Yeah stats pre 90s are pretty rough, even the busch series doesnt have complete easy to use stats until the early 80s, but this is all really building a base for the 90s and on
you know, I'm sort of a spreadsheeter myself... haha... anyway started thinking maybe this will show consistent but not winning a lot of races type drivers and might shed light on how crappy the playoff system is for crowning a champion. or the runner ups like Terry Labonte, or Mark Martin getting their chance to be at similar level as the championship winners

Its going to be interesting where Richard Petty falls after likely being the highest rated, only to run like crap for nearly a decade.
I wonder where Richie Evans would end up after 8 consecutive modified championships. I don't know if all those stats are available though. Racing Reference doesn't seem to have modified results before the 1980s. So I'll change the question to I wonder where Mike Stefanik will wind up after winning championships in both the Busch North and Modified tour multiple years running.
The mod guys who never move up will for sure climb pretty high, but will probably hit a ceiling due to lack of cup drivers dropping down to run it unlike trucks or busch
