Thank you for another engaging conversation about classical education. I am a retired organic chemist. Now that I am retired, I can devote more time to study of history, philosophy, literature & etc. Memoria Press is fantastic, and I love sitting in on your conversations.
Captain Blood is a good example of Sabatini’s Good Pirate. I love Scaramouche as well.I would like you to discuss ( amongst yourselves) the “Character“ of Edgar Rice Burroughs Heroes. I grew up having them read to me and I have continually re-read them over time, I am now 75. The attributes of the John Carter are so outstanding, that when we get older we realize he is The Ideal Hero. ERB’s characterization of Women(placing them on a pedestal), the love of a friend due to similarities of worldview, is crystal clear even to children.
When I studied philosophy at university, “rhetoric” was just considered to be bad philosophy. We were urged to avoid it at all costs. It may really be good advice to use the word “eloquence” instead.
