I looked into all this a year to two ago but I got almost overwhelmed by all the detail on how to make it for a specific species and how to keep out myna birds, etc. Then I realised the difficulty I'd have to mount it high enough. By that stage it was already late spring and too late in the season. So I dropped the idea. Your video is encouraging me to re-examine this and think about where I might mount it.
Dave, that is fantastic. If I have inspired one more person to make these boxes then it is all worth it. Thanks mate, yep the cheapest saw I could find at Bunnings. The first few cuts I was thinking, why am I making this hard for myself, and then they were all cut! Good stuff 👍 and I like your work bench. I’m not sure about wrapping wire around the tree though. We use a backing board on the box which is screwed to the tree with rubber grommets (small sections of old rubber hose) between the backing board and the tree to allow for tree growth.

@@mackenziemill That's great Sandy but since beginning my research into nesting boxes, you want the most natural finishes for protection. No treated materials, no paint or oil inside the box, and nothing toxic on the exterior of the box because many species like to chew on the edges. For the best results, try and find information that is relevant to the local birdlife in your area. :)

I am using HT (Heat Treated) pallets which are safe for everyone, there are many videos on UA-cam that help explain the codes on every pallet so you can tell if yours is heat treated or chemically treated. I thought I covered this here but I may have covered it in a different video and neglected to mention it here so thank you again. Cheers!

That is a great idea Sez, I love upcycling! You would have to double check that the drawer base is pine, often they are something soft like MDF. If you click on the instruction booklet in the description you should be able to find nesting boxes that are similar size to your drawers and then go for it!
Great, and I will build one as an experiment, but I am not convinced parrots will use these, they need a free overhead to feel comfortable, happy to proved wrong.

Thanks for watching and commenting Pete but the holes are the perfect size. Different Lorikeet species require an entrance hole from 30mm to 60mm wide. Rainbow Lorikeets need a 60mm entrance hole which is the size in this video. If they are too big then they end up becoming homes for much larger birds or allow predators to enter the box. Nice work. Are the pallets you use made from treated timber, and if so, isn’t that a concern for the young birds who may chew the timber?

The entrance holes are way too small for lorikeets

Parrots will chew the entrance hole bigger if they need to.
The tighter the fit the better to stop predators like goannas etc coming in after them.
