    Thank you for the paint comparison! I live in the desert so regular acrylic paints dry quickly. It’s so frustrating to not get the kind of prints i want. I know you can use mineral oil or hand sanitizer to expand the drying time, but those often dry too quickly too! I’ve started experimenting with Open acrylics and found that you do have to let them set before printing. But I’ll tell you what! From what I’ve done and from what I’ve seen from your video, I think I’ve found my new favorite paint. And not just for Gelli printing! This is just what I needed to see! I don’t mind the longer drying time...I embrace it! Yahoo!!

      Karen Woolsey Both Akua and Golden make the retarder that keeps the cheap craft acrylics wet - only takes a couple drops per color - you can get them from Amazon or any craft store or other online retailer.

    Thank you for a very informative video, I have been on the fence about buying some Open acrylics, I do use extender sometimes though. As always, it comes down to the initial investment to get enough colours to start, and so far I have talked myself out of it. I feel more informed about the pros and cons now and I love your leaf prints!💕🇨🇦

    Just found your video. Fortuitously as today I started using my golden opens. I did not buy them for Gelli printing but for regular painting, but my cat dictates I cannot easily have wet paintings of any reasonable size, so the got put away for a few years. They are all in perfect condition and the difference between using them and cheap student type acrylic is lik chalk and cheese. I do feel I have options now! A few colours seem to take extra time to dry. I noticed instantly I need a good green, also how little paint I am using, though I think that might increase with a more thirsty paper, for now I have been using layout paper which seems to be okay for learning, but hoping to progress to something better. The colours are absolutely gorgeous, mine are all transparent with the exception of Tit. Buff. The Indian yellow hue is gorgeous as is the manganese blue. I am hoping to try watercolours too. Thanks for a really informative video, your open prints are really lovely too.

    Great information. In the last couple of years, with my gelli plate, I have been able to experiment with monoprinting and have found that it's complicated! So far, I've managed to glean just enough information to be dangerous ;o) Your explanation really clears up some of the difficulties I've been having getting the results I want. Thanks for the great video.

    I see there is less contrast with transparent paint but this might be advantageous if the artist is attempting a subtle background for other images or words ets or darker more opaque images like a negative painting effect

    Thank you for this informative video! I've been using craft paints mostly and some fabric paints, but have not tried the open acrylics. I have one tube of Open white, that I have used to mix in with my other regular Golden acrylics to extend the drying time and I have extender; both have been a bit of a pain to use and you have to be sure to mix them well before use. My husband will not be happy about this, but I am going to go ahead and start investing in some open acrylic colours! lol Bottom line is that I love the effect that they produce in comparison to the regular acrylic and craft paints..
    Question; can you use open acrylics on fabric or are there any extra steps needed to take to make them washable?

    I'm very new to gel printing. So far, I'm mostly working with inks. I haven't had great success with acrylics yet, so this is helpful. I want to pull prints of some old black and white photos that I was going to have copies made of on a laser printer. Have you tried this at all? I have tried pulling a print of a magazine page, but that hasn't worked yet for me. I have seen it done successfully.

    • @LucyBrydonArt

      I have tended to stay away from the laser printer technique as it was a copyright issue for me I dont want my images to just be copies from magazines but go for it! it looks fun!

    Excellent comparison! I very much enjoyed your video. Thanks for producing it! I have purchased a small set of open paints and have started using them. I have a few questions- 1) can you mix the golden open and the regular paints on the plate? 2) I seem to find it harder to spread the open paint... am I doing something wrong? and 3) how long do you need to let the paint dry before you can safely apply the next layer. Oh, yes, one more: DO you know of any other brands of open paint? Thank you!

    • @LucyBrydonArt
      @LucyBrydonArt  6 років тому +1

      Kathy Kurke hi! I tend not to mix them although I do do layers on top using regular acrylics sometimes (especially a white layer) but I say just try it and see! I find it easy enough to spread them so not sure what you’re doing that’s making it hard it’s difficult for me to see without seeing your process.
      I don’t know if any other makes of open acrylics but you can add retarder to regular acrylics to make them “open”
      I just tend to test by pressing slightly to see if the layer has dried but you don’t need to wait too long I tend to work on several at a time so by the time I’ve come around to the first print again it’s dry enough

    Would doing fewer layers on each sheet of paper help keep the colors from getting so muddy? Like maybe 3 or 4 layers maximum? It seems like by the time you do more than 4 layers, the image is blurry and the colors are muddy.

      @LucyBrydonArt  2 роки тому

    • @LucyBrydonArt
      @LucyBrydonArt  5 років тому +1

      Paul Rose sometimes I use a combination yes! I don’t know if it creates more depth as such as I find that multiple layers of transparent open acrylics is good for that but sometimes regular acrylics are good for a final layer especially white!

    Such a good video Lucy, you explained and showed the differences so well. Beautiful prints too! I'd thought about adding a retarding medium to standard acrylic but the problem with that is having to mix in the retardant to all the paints before I begin a session, it adds a lot of effort. When I heard the meows I thought my cat was calling for me... there I was asking my hubby if our puss cat was alright lol! Anyway you are very good at explaining your creative processes and I look forward to more great videos from you. X

    For normal acrylics there are Gel mediums (transparency effects, extend the paint) and mediums to slow drying time up to approaching oil paint level.
    For this kind of art, the cheap paint is working but if anyone has say a pile of acrylic tubes might consider using the gel medium...
    The tube paint has much more pigment which is ground finer - why it's more expensive. Again a Gel will extend it and add transparency so you can make cool translucent effects if you want. Need to mix it first, and tiny amounts might be a hassle. Gel will help the cheaper paints also.
    Really fun are 'structural' mediums that allow huge buildups... You could literally spread those with cake decorator equipment if you want... Comes white/dries translucent faint yellow so good for adding any color to it and/or glitter, etc.

    • @LucyBrydonArt
      @LucyBrydonArt  3 роки тому +1

      yep for sure, although this was just a video comparing the two kinds of acrylics - regular and open so I kept it simple :) going into all the other kinds of mediums would be a video for another time!
