    With regards to the c button being too small to be an optical sensor, I think it's definitely possible. If it is an optical sensor, it reminds me of old blackberry phones after they replaced the trackball with an optical sensor. The thing to keep in mind is that the size of the sensor is not the limit of how far you can move. The size of your thumb is. You move your thumb around over the sensor and it keeps track of your movements by seeing how the thumb moves. It's a little bit of an adjustment over thinking of your finger dragging around something on a track pad to your finger moving and the contact point staying fixed, but it doesn't take long to get used to and works pretty well. You can really think of it more like an optical trackball than a small touch pad.

    smol correction: around 54:38 -> Yes, Wii was basically the same performance as GameCube, then you add the Wii-U in the same line, but the Wii-U was actually much improved. It's the next step that was basically no (or not much) performance improvements, from Wii-U to Switch.

    • @evermillcreek
      @evermillcreek 18 днів тому +1

      Yeah exactly, the Wii-U was basically a delay of the HD revolution. They stood still with Wii (the price point was insta-buy and it was easy to develop for), stepped forward with Wii-U, stood still with Switch (hybridising), now it's all forward at whatever pace is most reasonable. But the price point is crucial.

    • @ekinteko

      @@evermillcreek NSwitch performance is great for a pocketable. But it is NOT pocketable. It is merely okay for a portable (Switch Lite) form-factor. And as a Home Console (hybrid?) it is grossly underpowered.
      Remember the PS4 Pro was considered "slow" for its time, as is the whole generation. Yet the PS4 Pro launched at the same time as the NSwitch. And the performance difference between the two are staggering.
      The best analogy I can give, is that the PS Vita was much more capable than the original Xbox/Wii, but was much slower than the Xbox 360/PS3. Similar case for the NSwitch. It is faster than the Xbox 360/PS3/WiiU but is slower than the XB1/PS4. If anything the NSwitch is closer to the Xbox 360 than it is to the XB1 performance.

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko 15 днів тому +1

      @@evermillcreek I don't think that's true. I think the only thing that the 140 Million units sold indicates is that.... it sold well. The biggest factors are that: Nintendo could mass produce it, it was at a price people could afford, and the marketing was well enough to make people want it.
      I think performance was the last thing on their minds. It was always about profits from hardware, profits from services, and profits from accessories. Nintendo nailed all three, based on their new3DS (handheld) playbook.... and not off their GameCube (home console) playbook.

    • @evermillcreek
      @evermillcreek 15 днів тому

      @@ekinteko the price point is a huge priority I think, but it had to run breath of the wild so performance was by no means an after thought. They must have got a good deal with Nvidia, or it could have been a different story. The real profit is with the games. As long as the unit isn't making a loss and has some room for retail discounts/bundles. It's a balancing act and they won big. If performance wasn't a main consideration this Switch will just be the same power.

    I get Russ's argument of 350, and I agree 350 should be the limit. But to say that at 400 you may consider a ps5 or Xbox at 500, those are not portable and Billy Bob wants to take it on trips. Nintendo will charge 400 because people have shown that they're willing to pay increased prices for the latest tech, be it phones, TVs or gaming devices.

    Rich made a point about all the previous console games that were ported to the Switch was part of it's success. It's for that same reason that having dual screen capability on the Switch 2 makes sense... It opens up a whole new set of previous console (or handheld) games that could be ported to the Switch 2 easily.

    About the pricing of the original Switch when the OLED came out, people always forget about inflation in these discussions. The og Switch was 299, but when the OLED came out for 349, inflation had basically gone there. So in a way, the og staying at 299 _was_ a price reduction. If you take 299 of 2017 money, that's about 399 now. So they'll put the Switch 2 at that price and have at least one Switch 1 model at 299. If they can put the OLED there, that's sweet, but maybe it'll be the normal LCD model. But that's okay. Let's not speculate about a Switch 2 OLED's pricing in 2-3 years, because that'll simply depend on how the market evolves.

    Here is a comment for performance discussion!

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko 15 днів тому +1

      If you underclock the Apple M4 Max chipset to 20W that is currently the best available technology in this form-factor.
      In terms of consoles, such a thing will perform above the XSS but below the PS5. Basically current-gen gaming but in an indoors, backpack, type of device.
      But that is for a USD $2,500 device and not the target $400 price. For that you would likely have to go with the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset and it will operate in the 3W-12W range. So using half the power, doubling the battery life, but at the minimum also halving the performance. Since this is an off-the-shelf ARM chipset, it lacks a lot of the features, customisations, polish and magic that Apple has. Still this level of performance would be around PS4 Pro levels.
      What about the rumoured Nvidia Chipset ?
      It's using a Samsung Fabrication for the silicon, so die-size and efficiency are going to be compromised. The question is about what level. If it is the known 8nm, well that is a very old node and is only around the 10nm-TSMC level from 2018, think iPhone 8 Plus. Some people speculate it is a 5nm node. Which again is not good, and is only around 6nm-TSMC level, think iPhone 11 Max from 2020. It's a good 30% difference to the last +4nm-TSMC node, and a massive difference to the current 3nm-TSMC node. And based on the known specs of Cortex-A78 and RTX-2000 it is using older (less efficient) designs, which will have lower performance too. So the performance can vary quiet a bit. We are talking somewhere slightly below the XB1, to somewhere slightly below a PS4, and at best just slightly ahead of the PS4. Though this is a far cry from the fans online who claim it will be close-to or even exceed the PS4 Pro. No way. What I proposed with the MediaTek chipset would be what you need to get to that level, and that is an excellent recommendation based on the similar chipset price, and the sheer value for money.
      But I digress. Nintendo is not looking for anything special here, they just want to do what they want to do. Third-party seems to be low on their agenda. At least with the Last-Gen consoles having sold 200 Million units combined, there exists a big install base, and it has dragged down the current development cycle for the PS5 and XSX. This means cross-platform titles could still make its way over to the Switch-2 during its early years. And as the technology leap gets smaller each generation, this might allow those ambitious ports like Doom Eternal on the NSwitch.

    If NintendoLand2 comes out on Switch2 that will cement WiiU as one of the most influential consoles in Nintendo history.
    Everything that was most successful on Switch was developed for the WiiU, and if now Switch2 is just even more of a WiiU that would make two of Nintendo's most successful consoles of all time being direct descendants of the WiiU.

    I agree with Russ. Even 400 is too much to hit another home run. The DS and Wii price points were a huge part of their success. Adjust for inflation with base model, not OLED. Tariffs will be the wild card for the US, though.
    If they made less profit with the OLED and yet still could have retailers offer it at $270 with a game and 12 months NSO, they can still make a tidy profit without a huge jump. Also Nintendo will be just as tough at negotiating.
    Steam Deck itself isn't a real competitor of course because of first party games but also because they don't sell at retailers generally, otherwise it wouldn't be at that price.

  • @syferz
    @syferz 17 днів тому

    14:31 Russ is right, but I don't think that will matter much. This is coming out in June (after the Switch 2 tours they have announced). The next big 3D Mario is your holiday game 4 months later, so they can show off Mario and get people excited for it, while early adopters get Switch 2 in the first few months anyways. Basically the holidays is where they need their big system seller. MK8 did not save the Wii U, even though it came out just over a year after launch. MK8 still sold over 8 Million units on the Wii U (which is a bigger success than a lot of games mind you) but it's more of a title that sells alongside a platform and not selling the platform itself. The Numbers are also skewed a bit because it's always a pack in game, it was a pack in game on the Gamecube, DS, 3DS, Wii U and Switch... It might have even been a pack in game on the Wii in regions outside of America, because we got Wii Sports here, but wasn't a pack in in japan for instance.

For completionist sake, the 2015 holiday it sold 1.87M units and the final holiday was just 200K which was led by Color Splash. @@syferz The way you are defining ‘system seller’ is flawed. It’s still simply a fact _Mario Kart 8_ was the best selling Wii U game. Most people don’t buy a system for a singular game anyways. And any game that sells is a potential ‘system seller’ for _someone_ out there-I for example got the system with _Pikmin 3_ a comparatively very niche game. In the case of Nintendo, some will even buy a system on the assumption their favorite game will be there late-a safe assumption in many cases, such as with Mario Kart.
      People simply did not want to buy into the Wii U because the concept was not naturally appealing to a mass market of people. There was no game good enough to save that system. _Breath of the Wild_ would not have turned it around either.
      There was just _way_ too much negativity attached to the Wii U. I saw it in my personal life. People just did not see the appeal of that system. Some kids and Nintendo die-hards liked it well enough, everyone else found it barely interesting or just a confusing shitty iPad you can’t even take out of the living room. That was _the_ thing I had to explain to almost everyone: ‘No, you can’t travel with it.’ And interacting with it was slow and fiddly. Just did not demo well to friends and family at all.

One thing to consider however is we saw many many indies and 3rd party publishers bring their games to the Switch 1 over it's life cycle. Ports don't typically see that level of system specific optimization.
    Also Mario Kart 8 came out 11 years ago and they milked it.

    I really hope for an adventure mode or open world though. I agree with Bill in a way, that MK makes the perfect live service game. They could market it as a "pack-in" game, and have a number of free courses and characters. Maybe launch new tracks for $1 each and eventually suck 100's out of us over the years. Dont think it will happen, but who knows.
    Either way thanks for the entertainment at work over the years.

      Make sure to look into game sharing if you haven't. By making one system a home console and playing on a your profile on the other you only need one digital copy. I do it on Playstation with my brother. Only downside is the non home console will need to be online to play.

      Seriously. The Mario Kart takes here are _insane_ to the point it’s hard to take them seriously. It’s fine to be in a bubble, but Mario Kart is a wildly popular series and absolutely sells systems. It’s aslo beyond insane that Nintendo would choose to make their literal best seller available on the last system. There is essentially zero chance of that happening. Just _terrible_ critical thinking on these points.

    I will buy a Switch 2 for sure but think I'm done with XB after this gen but might still pickup next PS. I don't get comparing the SW2 to Steamdeck.... It's the next Nintendo console which I will only play docked, same as my current Switches. For Linux I have a box running Nobara - no Steamdeck needed.

    i know im probably in a niche category, but i had a Nintendo switch since 2018 was a bit late to the party but I really loved it, its the place Skyrim finally made sense to me and i played it for 250+ hours and loved it still do, doom 2016 , Witcher 3, Nier Automata, Hollow knight .. I loved all these games, I had Zelda to like everyone else but Nintendo games are not what made the switch magic for me, yes it was fun being part of the smash community during the character reveal days i was a hardcore nintendo fan to an extent.. when the steamdeck came out i was very annoyed by the hype around the device as a switch competitor, especially when the project kill-switch by dbrand was announced, i eventually bought a steamdeck to prove to my friends that the switch was a better device in 2023.. fast forward to 2025 i only own a steamdeck oled with a kill-switch case .. saying switch owners do not know or care what a steamdeck is false .. im now waiting to see if Nintendo can win me back (most likely not because I emulate a tone of games my ps2 and gamecube library has over 250 games in it now and that's my favourite generation )

  • @cgomes1607

    @39m30s The main argument for emulators, that Nintendo hates, is game preservation. It would be a big win for Nintendo if they handle it themselves, with retro-compatible hardware and online service. No more excuses for emulation and a huge added value with historical games that no other vendor could top.

And I seriously doubt that everybody that jumped in during the pandemic moved on to the elden rings and CODs after. A new Animal Crossing can definitely move consoles. For comparison, all of the metroid games combined sold somewhere in the 23 million. AC is high up there, only behind the juggernauts (minecraft, gta, etc)

    The big dilemma is will general folk have a reason to upgrade. I see that they will if their Switch 1's are used regularly and wearing out. Possibly if new games compels an upgrade, like an exclusive Zelda game. The Switch 2 just extends the Switch ecosystem. You're not going to get a major purchase wave like Switch 1 had compared to Wii U. The Switch 2 is like the Wii to Wii U narrative.

    Mario Kart 9 might just make me buy a switch 2 actually... But I'm weird. I'm not a Nintendo fan really, but the Wii U is the one console I actually did get. I had just installed a beamer and I bought a pack with Mario Kart at the start of a couple weeks stay at home vacation in a dreary November and it was glorious...
    But then the switch came and they just rereleased the same game... And I just refused to buy what I already owned. Later on with all the extra tracks it became more enticing, but the price for mk8 never really went down and you had to pay extra for all those new tracks, so I never got it because I was still salty about it.
    Eventually sold my switch because I never played it anymore (largely the Steam Deck's fault) but I never got around to selling the games... So I'm hoping the switch 2 is more ergonomic (though maybe still good to get an extra grip case with it) and then I think I'll give it another shot... And finally get another mk 😅 as well as playing those games that are still sitting there on a better system.

    • @finraziel
      @finraziel 18 днів тому

      Oh with regards to price... Yeah that could throw a spanner in the works for me. 400 feels like the absolute limit for me, and at that price it needs to be oled and I kind of would like a pack in game too... Though maybe that's not until later, maybe holiday season. And the game is not an absolute dealbreaker for me. But if it's 400 and another 60 or 70 for mk9 it pushes the price over some psychological barrier for me.
      If it's more than 400 or it doesn't have an oled screen I don't think I can justify it for myself at all.

    im calling the switch 2 the FIRST nintendo console with an actual internet connection, there is no way they can fumble their internet services again. they are poised to figure it out this time and make a MASIVE entry into the live service territory with those 2 franchises that make sense

    Saying Mario Kart isn't a system seller is very inaccurate. I am sure if you asked many hardcore gamers if they had to get the new Mario Kart, they would buy it for party gaming but wasn't the reason to get Switch 2. I have been lucky where I work to encounter a lot of female and casual gamers, and nearly every one of them bought a Switch just for Mario Kart! This is a key "evergreen" title for Nintendo which draws plenty of attention and purchases outside of the hardcore gamer crowd.

    Noooooo, we need a new engine. The 8 one is soooooo simple and easy for those of us that have been playing it regularly for like a decade now. The physics need an upgrade. Plenty of people said we wanted a new Mario kart at the launch of 8. It's really weird to say that gamers didn't want a new Mario kart.

    I would like to see a $350 price or even a $400 price if it has to be but given the market, I think $450 might be what they have to price it at if Nintendo wants to make a profit out the gate. I really don't think they can price this at $350 and $400 might be cutting too much into their profit margins.

    I completely disagree with MK9 not being a system seller. I personally while watching the reveal though o hey that's awesome the next switch I'll wait for a game I am excited about to buy it and then they showed Mario Kart and I instantly wanted to buy it. The difference here with the M1 its that the M1 is a processor which was good enough and people didn't feel the need for something more powerful because the m1 was enough. MK8 Deluxe was relased all the way back in 2017. Switch is a console where we didn't get the next mario kart, just the same game as the previous console. And having it so long in the console most of us unlike russ, who you can tell is not as interested since he hasn't finished all tracks, have played all the tracks, including the dlc tracks to death basically getting muscle memory. So yea a new MK is super exciting and worth buying a new console for many
