2 notes: first, underworld connections *made* black devotion. It was secretly the best card in the deck, and the deck wouldn’t have been anywhere close to as good without it. And the 2nd is that animate dead can hit any player’s graveyard, which is part of what makes it so good
I would argue that Gary made mono black devotion. the deck had plenty of ways to gain advantage, but being able to drop a gary and drain yourself back into the game or even a win is what made the deck
Nah, Pack Rat is what made black devotion both virtually unbeatable, and also completely miserable to play against. Gray Merchant is the reason games actually ended, but Pack Rat was the all star.
UW control, which was one of the other top decks at the time, did not care about either of those cards. Connections was the only card in the deck they were afraid of. Hell, I was playing GW aggro at the time and underworld connections was still one of the only cards in the deck that scared me
I think your scoring system would greatly benefit from giving massive value for whenever a card is banned or restricted from a competitive constructed format due to power. Case in point, this list. If you give people the choice to start their deck with either 4x Leyline Of The Void or 4x Necropotence and the top prize is a boatload of money, no one would pick Leyline.
Animate dead is so funny to me. Yugioh has Premature Burial which is essentially the same card but without nightmare rules text. The one time a Yugioh card is simpler than a Magic card
I remember when Urza’s Saga released and Tolarian Academy decks with Time Spirals and Stroke of Genius to finish took over my area. I was laughing at the shock on my opponents faces when I pulled out an early Chains of Mephistopheles or Underworld Dreams and wrecked their plan to draw half their deck for the win.
This was a fun video, as expected, but it does feel like The Abyss and Yawgmoth's Bargain should have gotten an honorable mention, even if they didn't have the points.
If an aura is put into play (not cast ! ) in any way you just attach it to a legal permanent/player without actually targeting the thing. Handy way to get around shroud, hexproof, ward and coo
Sort of meme video idea but "Top 10 Alchemy Cards". I know they're exclusive to Arena but it is sort of interesting to see how the digital-only capabilities gives them advantages and disadvantages that physical cards can't have.
As someone who played black devotion during that time, I will say this. Passively drawing cards is nice, but the one upside that connections had over arena was that you could choose when to use it. This helped greatly during match ups against aggressive strategies.
Ok, so I was gonna say Necropotence number one, but that normally goes against your "thumbnail normally isn't 1st place." thing you do so Leyline of the Void? Edit: Ayyyyy
Ahhh black enchantments, they're definitely good, some of them at least. I don't wanna pretend I guessed #1, but I can't say I'm surprised it's there. What I am surprised about is that this isn't "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!
Id swap #9 with black market conections being able to draw at 3 mana each turn and can get into play faster with something like a dark ritual, swamp and a crypt plus it adds a mana token and a body into play just crazy good card for any black based decks imo
You should have titled this "The Most Used" Black Enchanments, not "The Best" as I personally didn't agree with over half of your selections as being the Best out of all the black enchantments out there.
I have a non meme video idea. The Top 10 Colorless Non-Artifact Cards.
Ah yes, Ugin, Karn, and All The Damn Eldrazi
So like, lands?
Yeah that sounds pretty good.

Considering MH3 leaks...maybe wait a bit.

#9 - *lore counter. "Age" counters are for cumulative upkeep.

There are some videos called "top 10 strongs" or something like that, and Nizzahoon adds that variable to those videos.
Animate dead is so funny to me. Yugioh has Premature Burial which is essentially the same card but without nightmare rules text. The one time a Yugioh card is simpler than a Magic card
You are my favorite UA-camr for DnD. You have such a genuine love for the game, and the whole experience. Very contagious.
Dead weight, leyline of the void, necropotence, phyrexian arena, meathook massacre (but maybe it got banned too fast)
I can remember when Ice Age was released everyone at my LGS thought Necropotence was trash
Underworld dreams, phyxerian arena, yawgmoths bargain, nether void, the abyss were all names I expected
While I love Nether Void and the Abyss, they were never in decks that top'd big tournaments.
This was a fun video, as expected, but it does feel like The Abyss and Yawgmoth's Bargain should have gotten an honorable mention, even if they didn't have the points.
Yawgmoths bargain was such a sweet deck when it was in standard
Yawgmoth's Bargain and Recurring Nightmare were powerhouses back in the day too.
Dead weight saw play in its first go around as way to kill giest of st traft with sun titan’s etb trigger.
Does that not target?
@@RobotDCLXVI the aura coming into play has to be on a creature and it doesn’t target

How close was Phyrexian arena to appearing? I'm very surprised it didn't make the cut at all.
It has 41 points.
Wow, underworld connections but no phyrexian arena? That is very surprising!
Sort of meme video idea but "Top 10 Alchemy Cards". I know they're exclusive to Arena but it is sort of interesting to see how the digital-only capabilities gives them advantages and disadvantages that physical cards can't have.
How many points does Yawgmoth's Bargain have ?
Also, I am surprised Dead Weight doesn't have any points in Pauper.
Probably because of Disfigure being better without the mentioned synergies.
@@crawdaddy1234 I guess, but I have just seen it being cast in CardMarket's best pauper decks of all time series (in the 2019 Pestilence deck).
Honorable mention "engineered plague" did good wiping goblins, faeries and elves off the map
Pherexian Arena is better than connections in my opinion!
As someone who played black devotion during that time, I will say this.
Passively drawing cards is nice, but the one upside that connections had over arena was that you could choose when to use it. This helped greatly during match ups against aggressive strategies.
Hilarious how inexpensive (monetarily) this list is, too. Meathook Massacre is the most expensive card? Insane.
I'm thinking LotV over necropotence for #1, necro is obviously the strongest black enchantment but Leyline sees way more play
LotV being short of Liliana of the Veil and leyline of the void is hella confusing
Number one is Necropotence.
Animate Dead was also an infinite mana combo with Worldgorger Dragon in vintage
Love seeing The Cruelty of Gix on here.
Feast of the Unicorn at #1, haha
I never thought of using dead weight in lurrus, i just used mire's grasp
Technically, not all “Leylines” have that ability. The actual card Leyline from Prophecy does NOT have the Leyline text. 😂
I guess you don’t recognize commander on this channel, still worth the watch
I wouldn't say I don't recognize it. But no, it doesn't factor into most top 10s.
Calling necropotence #1 and grave pact #2
Surprised to not see oversold cemetery or underworld dreams
I’m surprised yawgmoths bargain isn’t on here. That’s a insanely powerful card and I’m pretty sure it saw alota play back in the day
Ok, so I was gonna say Necropotence number one, but that normally goes against your "thumbnail normally isn't 1st place." thing you do so Leyline of the Void?
Edit:
Ayyyyy
Completely forgot sideboard superstar leyline. Really thought necro would have this
Surprised that Bargain didn't make the list.
Surprised Recurring Nightmare didn't make it
It gets an age counter at the beginning of your pre combat main phase 😜
very surprised to see Underworld Connections on this list and not Phyrexian Arena. How many points does the Arena have?
I get serotonin every time a Magic channel refuses to acknowledge “kindred” as a replacement for “tribal”.
What, no Oath of Lim-Dul? You can draw cards with it, it HAS to be good, right?
Thought for sure Waste Not would be there. Guess not.
I am amazed, that phyrexian arena is not in the list.
How about cards that transform opposing creatures into (less harmful hopefully) creatures? Like Generous Gift….
I'm surprised. I thought Necropotence would be #1.
Did you forget phyrexian arena? Or it actually doesn't make the cut? I imagined it would be top. Weird
Ahhh black enchantments, they're definitely good, some of them at least. I don't wanna pretend I guessed #1, but I can't say I'm surprised it's there. What I am surprised about is that this isn't "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"!
Regardless of what the numbers say there is only one number one and its the thumbnail
No Yawgmoths Bargin?🤔🤔
Id swap #9 with black market conections being able to draw at 3 mana each turn and can get into play faster with something like a dark ritual, swamp and a crypt plus it adds a mana token and a body into play just crazy good card for any black based decks imo
He's talking about tournament success, not what you should put in your deck.
14:24 damn the new art is horrible, it looks like an AI generated 3d art whereas the original Helm of Obidience looked like a beautiful drawing.
no blackmarket connections
You should have titled this "The Most Used" Black Enchanments, not "The Best" as I personally didn't agree with over half of your selections as being the Best out of all the black enchantments out there.
Didn't you say you were going to stop calling tribal cards tribal because of wizards new policy on that type of thing?
MH3 Spoilers
Wotc is trying to fix necropotence in MH3. I look forward to it being high on this list if it isn't immediately banned
