  • -42° below zero early this morning I was told later from my ride back.
That hissing you hear in the beginning is the Alaska Pipeline making that sound.

You are certainly one strong man. You remind me very much of the Arctic explorers like Ernest Shackleton etc. They were men of a different breed and so are you 🙂. It takes something special to undertake a challenge such as you are doing here.
I am continuing to say prayers for your safety and success. Stay warm and safe. 🙏🙏

eventually you stop feeling the cold, and it just feels like numb pain, with little pricks of pain all over as you sweat and it freezes on your skin. it's similar to being in +120F, in that heat you also feel the little pinpricks of pain as you sweat and it evaporates instantly, but instead of a numb pain it's sort of a dull sandy painful tingle. but after you stop feeling the cold, then you slowly start feeling nice and warm, then sleepy, and if you don't act immediately at that point (as in you're not about to be put into shelter and extreme hypothermia treatment), you fall asleep and never wake up.
also, if you get into that ice fog he was pointing out, it will kill you even more rapidly. if that ice fog creeps up around you and you're not prepared for it, and rescue isn't minutes away, there's nothing left to do but make peace and prepare yourself. if it wasn't for that trapper rolling by, we may never have seen this video. in extreme cold your body is burning through calories and water like mad, and you require thousands extra calories and liters extra water per day just to exist. he's definitely not carrying enough food/water for the weather he is in.
i have been in both situations, the numb prickly pain of extreme hot and cold, but fortunately never past that point.

Here in the central Sierra Nevada high country, we’ve gotten about three feet of snow in the last day or so. Nonstop snow storm that is gonna get worse in the next few days.

Shoestring you amaze me . I could not be in the cold like you I would be by the wood stove . That place looked " Luddicruss " cold . Glad you made it back to civilization.

For awhile I lived in an area where the locals could tell the air temperature by the kind of squeak sound made when walking on the snow. The sound from your daylight portion of video brought back cold, cold memories. The after sunset sounds, I do not think I've ever heard that kind of cold. I was warned that if I got too cold I would not feel it. The tell tale was a wandering mind and loss of attention to details. And, we never went out alone in that kind of cold. Fortunately, somebody always "kept the home fires burning" that season.

Just watching this again ... You got so lucky catching those rides. One thing tho I got stuck focusing on... I can't figure out why you would sit there with the lid off of your bucket for so long, even if you're letting it vent for oxygen to the hand warmers. Especially when you cannot let anything in there freeze. Lol. Not sure why I focused so much on it, but just something I noticed. Prob wasn't that long in the scheme of things anyway. Regardless, that looks like an adventure of a lifetime! So glad you're safe and sound now.

Damn that made my hands and feet hurt and I was just watching. Glad you made it.....some people wouldn't have. 1st thanks to the guy who let you stay in his shelter and the guy who gave you the firewood. 2nd thanks to everyone who gave you a ride especially the guy who drove you out. 3rd thanks for taking us along and 4th screw anyone who passed you up or didn't help you when they could've. I think the guy in the truck wss pilot for those 2 truck's and the reason he stopped was to let them know a crazy Hobo was on the bridge. No way they would've crossed that bridge blind at those speed's. Peace Brother
