- -42° below zero early this morning I was told later from my ride back.
That hissing you hear in the beginning is the Alaska Pipeline making that sound.
Hey Brother it's James your Driver from Anchorage was a pleasure meeting you! I'll be watching your videos from now on hopefully we cross paths again!
Thank you for helping him out!
Thanks James🖖
Thank you for helping shoestring out, Good Man !
Hey James, good for you- helping a wandering traveler in the middle of nowhere. It’s good to know people are still helping people, even when no one’s watching.
🤗
RIP to this nice man. I appreciate his great vids.
This is my favorite video woke up at 3:30am watching these videos I'm really gonna miss seeing shoestring adventures
Same😢
I still feel sick over this. I’ve been watching his Alaska videos; they are my favorite because I feel like he was happiest in Alaska. I’m really gonna miss this guy
"I'm still happy inside", best line ever!
What did I learn when it's this cold tarps and people can break big thanks to Yukon Jerry for looking out for Shoestring your a good man.
I like when he says I'm still happy inside
I just heard that and it made my heart happy for him!
You’re not crazy, you’re just Shoestring Crazy! Stay safe please - this world needs you.

Man 😢
A BIG THANKS to Yukon Jerry for giving you some shelter.....
Hey there Mr. Shoestring. At least the mosquitos didn't seem too bad this trip.
Damn good point
Always gotta find the silver lining.
I'm happy inside, I live on hope. Great Shoestring quote. If only the rest of the world knew this.
I wised Shoestring could have spent his last days in Alaska. He said thats where he was truly happy at. RIP 🙏
I’m a disabled 46 year old living in rainy Durham, UK. Your adventures are keeping me going! Stay safe my friend.
Hope his adventure with his vaccine turns out well.im just down the road at teesport
Yeah. I’m too crippled up to go anymore but Shoestring let’s me ride on his back.
I'm 60 years old. I got you beat. Lol.
RIP Shoestring😪😪 im gonna miss ya bud. RIP
Absolutely astonishing. So glad locals helped you with shelter. Thanks Alaskans!
I’m not kidding: I liked this episode better than most movies. Not even sure why.
Real man vs death makes it exciting.
Real !!!
I have been in weather like that and your body tells your brain, "this can kill you" read 'to build a fire' by Jack London,
Yes this was epic
I petition Clint Eastwood, Ron Howard, and James Cameron to make a movie about "Hobo Shoestring" alias Mark Nichols😊
There's still faith in humanity, seems ppl in these remote places are so much kinder than in crowded cities. Be safe........
Hey Mark..get your butt back to tennesse
Absolutely. Cities are full of assholes.
Cities are all infested with handouts and entitled creeps
"I'm not crazy, I'm just crazy in MY way." -- Shoestring
Shoestring, you are an inspiration to many. Most people spend their lives existing; you spend yours LIVING. I enjoy following it immensely! Stay safe, my friend.
RIP SHOESTRING your an icon and a hero veteran
Wow , the view outside of Yukon Jerry's car window ( when he was taking you to Yukon camp ) was terrifying . You came "that" close ( Too close ) to freezing to death if he hadn't found you . Full marks to Jerry for realizing you were in trouble , and rescuing you !!!!!!!!!!
I know this cold. I live in northern Minnesota about an hour from the Canadian border. I've been out in cold like this twice in my life. Never again.
If anyone thinks that shoestring is crazy he's not crazy what he is is free.
Yea krazy FREE!!
You mean a frozen wolf snack
Yes. But Alaska in January! How about free and in South Beach Miami? Southern Texas?
Freedom is not free.
Isn't that the truth
10 years of my life was partly used watching your videos Mark. If i ever cant sleep i put one of your videos. Thanks for just being you and sharing it with the whole world. Truly one of the most interesting souls I've ever come across.
Still was a goal that some people would not ever consider doing Shoestring!! I think you did great! You got as far as they would let you! Still proud of you!! And your still in Alaska where you love to be! Enjoy what you got and have a good time! Im glad your safe and in a warm room!! Thanks for a great adventure!! Thank you Yukon Jerry for helping Shoestring out!! Please b Safe............
So happy to see this video. I've been wondering how you are doing with your personal challenge. I'm happy that the people in Alaska are so kind and watch out for others.
You are certainly one strong man. You remind me very much of the Arctic explorers like Ernest Shackleton etc. They were men of a different breed and so are you 🙂. It takes something special to undertake a challenge such as you are doing here.
I am continuing to say prayers for your safety and success. Stay warm and safe. 🙏🙏
I can't even begin to comprehend what that kind of cold feels like. Insane images. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah it's 20 degrees where I'm at right now and I barely can stand that lol I can't imigane -40
eventually you stop feeling the cold, and it just feels like numb pain, with little pricks of pain all over as you sweat and it freezes on your skin. it's similar to being in +120F, in that heat you also feel the little pinpricks of pain as you sweat and it evaporates instantly, but instead of a numb pain it's sort of a dull sandy painful tingle. but after you stop feeling the cold, then you slowly start feeling nice and warm, then sleepy, and if you don't act immediately at that point (as in you're not about to be put into shelter and extreme hypothermia treatment), you fall asleep and never wake up.
also, if you get into that ice fog he was pointing out, it will kill you even more rapidly. if that ice fog creeps up around you and you're not prepared for it, and rescue isn't minutes away, there's nothing left to do but make peace and prepare yourself. if it wasn't for that trapper rolling by, we may never have seen this video. in extreme cold your body is burning through calories and water like mad, and you require thousands extra calories and liters extra water per day just to exist. he's definitely not carrying enough food/water for the weather he is in.
i have been in both situations, the numb prickly pain of extreme hot and cold, but fortunately never past that point.
@@SuperAWaC what job do you do?
Feels cold.
Once it gets to about 0 you don't really notice. You just cool off faster

Yukon Jerry , thanks 😊❤
“I’m still happy inside”. Friends, that’s the only attitude that will get you through your life. Thank you Shoestring, from Sterno Stan, now in Portugal.
You are not crazy, You are attracted to Adventure, seeing new places, and finding new journeys to take on. I have this exact same flame burning inside of me. I have hitchhiked this country corner to every corner. I really enjoy your videos. You should really be safe and mindful of elements when leaving the lower 48. God bless
that's hardcore shoestring. thanks and stay safe.
You sir look crazy and do crazy things, but say some of the most introspective and wise things. My biggest take away is you respect everyone every where you go and that's how you survive.
Amazing Shoestring!!! You determination and mental toughness is inspiring.
True.
But he was on the very fine line of tough an pure stupidity. You don't truffle with weather such as that.
@@CosmosArchipelago Indeed. Per his previous posts he was very aware of the risk he was taking.
You will be one of those people that can say "I did it all." Stay safe and happy! Thanks for the content as usual!
I really thought I was cold today in Florida with it being 46 degrees. Any time I start to complain about anything I try to think about you. Here I am in a warm home vs you in negative 42 degree weather and some how your still happier then me. Your certainly inspiring man! Freedom is happiness and your a perfect example.
Great video as always Sir! My Uncle in Montana always said, "20 below makes you appreciate 20 above." Wise Words!
Hey Panzer
We've been following you at work. Sorry you're having such a rough time, Mark.
Experienced -46 degree temps a few years ago and it's no joke. Safe travels
Be careful Shoestring. I'm praying for your safety.
Your experience of thirty one years counting. You had an amaaaaazing stamina and grittttttt to bear the frozen wilderness and made us to join your mind blowing endeavour. Hearty Greetings from India 🎉
Oh damn, it looks incredibly cold there, Mark. Nice photo with the Dalton Highway sign! Nothing quite like a feature length Shoestring film!
Man, I wonder how many people walking by their lonesome along those long stretches of desolate highways surrounded by wilderness get themselves into a fix with a grizzly or other type of dangerous animal. It could be a long time before any help comes along.....jeesh, I sure hope you have some kind of effective protection with you my friend! Not that I'd expect any grizzlies to be up and about in that kind of cold, but who knows what's lurking in those trees!!!! Please be careful and stay safe and warm!!!!!! Cause we love you shoestring!!!!¡
Some people might think you are crazy.
The rest of us know it.
Lol, Keep it up brother, you are the trooper. That snow depth doesn’t look that bad, but that air temp is colder than most humans have ever had to deal with.
Here in the central Sierra Nevada high country, we’ve gotten about three feet of snow in the last day or so. Nonstop snow storm that is gonna get worse in the next few days.
I absolutely love it. Winter is what separates the men from the boys and If that’s the case, then you are THE man.
Stay safe my brother.
Thanks for taking us along on this mission.
Keeping us on edge shoestring! Rock on brother, we know and pray that you are safe, happy, and free.... and relatively warm🔥
shoestring the extreme hobo
Truestory
Extreme or crazy either one works in this situation I'd be heading straight for key west for a year after I left there lol actually you wouldn't catch me that far north nope no way anyways stay safe shoestring and stay warm
👍
@@JT_8283 I love snow and cold.
Yeah, Stobe needs to step up his game! LOL!
Shoestring, you have balls of steel! You are certainly an inspiration to many of us! God Bless you brother and safe travels!
After all that he might have balls of ice! Hope they get thawed out soon.
Agreed 👍🏼
I’ll say!
Shoes a vet he's Seen better days but yes he's fearless
It has been confirmed: You are The Man!
Hello shoestring I hope you are doing better. My father told me about riding the rails in the depression and sleeping outside. I love your videos keep them coming. You are a true American who is truly free .
You're cracking me up saying it's warming up only 8 below. If I was a tree I'd be shivering!
Suddenly 22 degrees in the early morning doesn't seem too bad right now.
Wow!!! I could imagine how cold you were....I grew up in the hills of PA and saw 42 below zero many times...We didn't have the warmest clothes and our feet would just about freeze off...there is real danger in being out in that cold and I am sure glad there was a guardian angel around!! Stay safe Mark!
Holy moly. I've worked in an ice cream freezer at a big store and it wasn't as cold as that. -25 is how low it got. I can't imagine below -40 lol. Stay safe and keep warm man
.Just came across your you tube channel couple weeks ago. I really enjoy watching. You live free- the way you want to live.
The guy in the pickup didn’t drive away from you, he had an oversized load placard and he was a pilot vehicle for the oversized loads you saw after, he was waiting for them to catch up. I work in Prudhoe Bay up north of you and the pilot vehicles are common.
Yeah I figured that out after seeing the two trucks
@@TheHoboShoestring hows that reindeer taste?
@@andrewnorris1514
Pretty good.. I have it quite often...
I've been told it's less nutritious than most meats except caribou.... Caribou is supposedly the least fattening and nutritious of all mammal meats
@@TheHoboShoestring Buddy God Bless stay safe one day at a time
"I'm still happy inside."... YOU are a legend.
I don’t think that you’re crazy at all. You’re an adventurous, brave man God bless you
The Iceman cometh...no doubt he's the Man... Shoestring my hero
I remember crossing that Yukon river bridge on New Year's eve Y2K heading for Pump Station 5. It was -62F and I was about the only vehicle on the road.
Wow
Here to remember just scrolling through UA-cam and this is one of the first videos of Mark Nichols/ shoestring that I seen a few years ago and just fell into the Shoestring experience! miss this guy! RIP Mark!
"My tarp was sooo cold it Snapped" hahaha I request you to head immediately to the south Caribbean for a week long thaw on the beach
Remarkable Shoestring, thanks for voicing your deeply personal feelings and observations..."..here the earth is tilted back away from the sun..." while standing on a -40 below zero deserted highway! Good sense and luck maketh a rich soul.
Shoe... I’m just crazing enough to sit in a warm house watching those crazier than me doing what I wish I was crazy enough to try ..
Hobo I admire your tenacity for life , survival skills and diy info..I also am learning a lot from you about the railroad system. My hunting friend and I walk railroad tracks a lot to access public hunting land and learning about the trains from you is helpful.. we hunt w longbows and the conductors who have seen us have been nice. hopefully we won’t get caught in the wrong place and sited for walking on the tracks.. love your vids!
Ha loved the star wars references, Just glad you didn't get caught up in a blizzard! Nice Adventure shoestring
"my eyeballs have an ice cream headache.." Pretty sure that's the best quote I've ever heard!
I was very nervous for you! Your a very brave man. Be careful, and stay warm.
I’ve got a cabin in the bush that’s almost that rough. It has a wood stove just like that one. We call it “interference heating.” You have to interfere with the heat as it goes from the stove to the walls and out. Can be a real adventure at minus 40.
It's gorgeous there but that cold is too much.
Save travels to you Shoestring. 🙏❤
"I'm not crazy... I'm just crazy in my way"! - Shoestring (love it!)
I was hooked on reality survival shows where there were camera crews & a lifeline to civilization. You did this alone & unscripted in the "dead of Winter." Your only lifeline was whatever humanity had to offer on a lonely highway. That took guts. I know it was a personal adventurous challenge which brings me back to this channel. I couldn't do this in my wildest dreams. May God be with you.
That was an adventure!
I watched it just now, in my camper, heated to about 65° and I got cold watching you... 😂
800° Warmer 😂😆😂
Thanks for the laughs. We enjoy your sense of humor. 👍 Great to see the landscape up there. ❄️
I worked for an insulation company in ND. We quit working @ 12 below. Before that we’d take a propane heater & line a room with plastic sheeting to keep the heat in. Still colder than you know what! So understandable.
Shoestring you amaze me . I could not be in the cold like you I would be by the wood stove . That place looked " Luddicruss " cold . Glad you made it back to civilization.
Take Care Shoestring.
Man this man is a legend I lived in Colorado for most of my life ! This cold weather is rough on your body !! This guy is a survivor hero !! 👍👏🙏
I notices 65 dislikes and I can't figure them out. Shoestring is so totally honest with us that there is no call to get angry and dislike anything.
You are a joy to watch! I'm actually not too worried for you cause you seem to have angels watching over you. Some of the things you say have me cracking up!!!! Keep making these vids!❤
I know I dont know you personally but it seems like you are having the best years of your life right now, and I'm glad to be watching it unfold. If you're ever around Daytona beach Florida, I'd be happy to let you have a "pit stop" round my place
Shoestring doesn't do florida.i don't blame him.its flat and full of mosquitos.btw, I'm in Edgewater!
Howdy neighbor!
@@johnhalder471 I live in Florida shores! Small world isn't it!!
Very cool video ..I can't wait till I get a chance to go to Alaska so beautiful
Shoestring! Do it bro. You're an inspiration to me.
Don't ever ever stop Shoestring, There are people in this world who need your adventures ,
For awhile I lived in an area where the locals could tell the air temperature by the kind of squeak sound made when walking on the snow. The sound from your daylight portion of video brought back cold, cold memories. The after sunset sounds, I do not think I've ever heard that kind of cold. I was warned that if I got too cold I would not feel it. The tell tale was a wandering mind and loss of attention to details. And, we never went out alone in that kind of cold. Fortunately, somebody always "kept the home fires burning" that season.
Just watching this again ... You got so lucky catching those rides. One thing tho I got stuck focusing on... I can't figure out why you would sit there with the lid off of your bucket for so long, even if you're letting it vent for oxygen to the hand warmers. Especially when you cannot let anything in there freeze. Lol. Not sure why I focused so much on it, but just something I noticed. Prob wasn't that long in the scheme of things anyway. Regardless, that looks like an adventure of a lifetime! So glad you're safe and sound now.
Been wondering about you on your journey up north, I was happy to see a new post, that meant you didn't freeze too death.. Be safe
Thanks for the Alaskan frozen adventure video, glad you made it back safely. Fun fact, -40F = -40C
"I'm not crazy, I'm just crazy in my way." There is something brilliant about that statement. Thanks for taking us along.
I will miss you dearly Shoestring 💔 😢 your adventures took me to places I only dream of. You've made your final ride on the "Glory Train"
Coldest I've ever felt is -17f and it's overwhelming. At that temperature things move slowly yet things happen so fast.
If they ever had a train to Hawaii I'm sure you'd be on it. Love you videos. The traveling you have done in your life is more than most people put together.
Hey shoestring stay safe on the rails... can you all spread my dads memorial around anyways you can... retired CSX engineer and I watch him lose his battle to cancer... God bless you all... love the vids!!!
bnrowdy, so sorry for your loss. May the memories of your dad keep him alive for you forever
Hate that you got so cold that's beautiful country thanks for the video
You are an amazing adventurer!
been following shoestring for the better part of a decade now, gotta say man- loving the direction & quality of your work. Stay safe, warm , sane & healthy.
Damn that made my hands and feet hurt and I was just watching. Glad you made it.....some people wouldn't have. 1st thanks to the guy who let you stay in his shelter and the guy who gave you the firewood. 2nd thanks to everyone who gave you a ride especially the guy who drove you out. 3rd thanks for taking us along and 4th screw anyone who passed you up or didn't help you when they could've. I think the guy in the truck wss pilot for those 2 truck's and the reason he stopped was to let them know a crazy Hobo was on the bridge. No way they would've crossed that bridge blind at those speed's. Peace Brother
So great to find your channel...the last of the true American pioneers!
Glad you're safe. Sorry you didn't hit the Artic circle. Safe travels. 🙃
This is awesome.....THANK YOU !!! Your journey was and is Awesome! God Bless You!!
God bless the people of Alaska for being so kind and generous! People really take care of people up there.
For good people it’s in their blood - it really is a matter of life and death!
So glad you made it somewhere warm to defrost. You sir, are a rare breed! I admire your ambition to achieve your goal but also respect your decision to stop where you did. Stay warm my friend. Safe travels! As always, I look forward to your next adventure!
You’re a damn sight braver than me, good luck and happy trails up there!
I can’t believe that another human being can’t find you a room of sorts overnight when you’re in that sort of environment.
Most people help others in those sort of extreme conditions.
You are the man shoestring thank you for turning around going back
Be safe out there. I’m in Alberta and it was only -24 today without the wind but that was bad enough while working. Hope you catch a ride home soon and stay warm !
There's something soothing about watching your videos Shoestring, even when you're on the verge of turning into a block of human ice.
