It was after one of the night concerts, he was teaching a young man some tune and I was there. He told us some stories, then I asked him if he could play “One Mint Julep” for us. He grabbed my guitar and played the song. And then, Richard Smith came and they started jamming.

Watching this is fascinating…they are not performing a show. They are playing with and for each other. Richard is working out a harmony part with Tommy’s assistance. As an amateur guitar player, watching this is amazing. I actually made me a little emotional.😍
I can imagine anyone in the room not being captivated by these 2 gifted players. They may never hear this excellent level live ever
you dont need to imagine. you can hear the rest of the crowd just busy chattering on their issues. what i don't understand what these people go guitar retreat when they actually dont listen..or perhaps it was a break. and I'm quick to judge...
Sitting there with my mouth open realizing how truly wonderful these guys really are..Thanks Tommy for all the listening pleasure you have given me over the years
Well said.
Unreal talent, unreal communication, just so great to watch.
They have/are more fun just jamming than most bands have playing
Great session ✊❤️✊
My two favorite living guitarists.
Watched this twice... will again quite a few times I'm certain!
Blew my hair back!!
Aaand again!!😁
Just a couple of world-class virtuosos messing around. Fabulous!
I’m fascinated by what must have been a historically significant moment as this video captured a room full of the most oblivious human beings to have ever been gathered in one audience.
This is what 2 man should do in their free time
I am so amazed by these two genius musicians! Thank you for your excellent playing!
This sounds like Muscat Ramble. Very nice!!
True masters. Never quite satisfied that they can't seek further perfection! Thanks Akira. (I just watched the 6 part jam you posted)
I wish i had their knowledge. Crazy how much they know
Que MARAVILHA! Dois GÉNIOS da guitarra.
In this video you will watch and listen to arguably the two finest multi genre acoustic guitar masters teaching each other. What a treat. Tommy Emmanuel is not the finest acoustic guitar instrumentalist in every genre. He is, however, one of the finest handful of contenders for that title in every genre. And he and maybe Richard are the only ones who can say that.
With Tommy It’s oddly annoying (to me) because he also seems to know that, but the confidence with which he plays which is by a country mile surer than all the others does not come from an awareness of what others think, but, rather, the knowledge he has that no one has outworked him, and he knows damned well that he’s good. He gets serious satisfaction out of how well he can play what he just a split second before thought of, and his fingers just do it-and he never, to my ear-makes mistakes, flubs a fingering, as he assembles it and as he plays it. At my lower by a mile but playing for 60 years, similar music (John Hurt) ) I used to feel that relative power sometimes. I knew exactly whether I had acquitted myself in such a way that no one could argue with it. So Tommy, he knows! So does everyone else. It is said that Sammy Davis Jr could play every instrument in a band. I saw him play drums, piano and trumpet. He could sing Broadway, pop, country. He could tap dance as well as any other show Biz tapper I ever saw. Tommy Emmanuel is that guy when it comes to what you can get out of one guitar for longer than you can stand to listen to because you’re getting exhausted just thinking about what he just did. He’s not real. One man cannot do all that. There are others within genres. Stanley Jordan is one. Wes Montgomery. Ry Cooder. But they are genre phenoms. Tommy takes the acoustic guitar everywhere (genre), I think. Esp when Phil was alive. Maybe Glen Campbell was a TE. Anyway, Tommy will almost play every song every way it could reasonably be played! Every song is a masterclass. Some will only relate to the tab-ness of it (finger/fret pairs); while others came to the party with that and are appreciating the barrage of phrases and idioms. I cannot watch too much because is more energy and information that would be useful to me than I can absorb. He’s also very affable, generous with his time, regardless of what fan he is paying attention to (and he does pay attention). He will sit down and listen to you play, or even play with you, at your level, and give you advice that is appropriate for your skill level. Who does that? As my grandmother used to say, hysterically.
I’ve met both. Richard is a talent powerhouse, also.
I’m not too much older than Tommy. I’ve shaken his hand. I have seen him leap up and off a stage. Not carelessly like a child, but unusually masterfully. He is a very strong man. And the way he plays... the energy, the pace of passages and ideas while he either pays attention to his audience or, like his audience, takes pleasure in watching himself play, even laughing out loud when he amuses himself! He is unique.
Wow! How great is this
If I am marooned on a deserted island, these guys are coming with me.
It goes to show you don"t need amps to sound Good! excellent!
Brilliant!
If my memory isn’t failing me , I believe they’re playing ‘ Muscrat Ramble ‘ ,not ‘ One mint julep ‘, at least not the Ray Charles tune I remember by that name. Regardless this some great playing by masters ,very inspiring and instructive.
gorgeous gentlemen !!!
Smith was born in Beckenham, England. He picked up the guitar when he was five years old after watching his father playing an Atkins and Travis version of "Down South Blues". He begged his father, a longtime Atkins admirer, to introduce him to the fingerpicking style. Smith soon became a child prodigy on the guitar. At the age of 11 he shared the stage with his idol when Atkins invited Smith to play with him at Her Majesty's Theatre in London.
Daugherty r 22 When Tommy was playing Mr Smiths guitar I noticed what appeared to be a unique nut on that guitar. Perhaps it was some sort of capo , but I really couldn't tell. Can you shed any light on that ? Thanks and thanks for that quick bio.
Kenny Bluet pretty sure it’s a capo he rests behind the nut when he’s not using it.
@@thearabianmage thanks. I thought of that but thought it might have been there for a specific purpose other than to just sit there waiting to be used. I was thinking could it possibly be some sort of custom made capo that was secured just below the nut , in order to utilize the whole fretboard. You know , as opposed to putting it on the second or third etc.
He Is Amazing AGE 5 I feel he Must Of Been Musicaly Gifted In A Prior Life & This will Continue A Pure Genius
Very cool Akira! I see you've been hard at work on the body of your Custom Shop guitar!!!! Well wear mate and looking forward to meeting you when I'm down under at the beginning of 2020 !
Thanks Shane! Yeah, the wears around the sound hole are from my hard work:)
Can’t wait to see you mate!
Elite. What can I say ...
Just ASTOUNDING!!
Who would give this thumbs down....
I know, let me get the best guitar players, and show how we are even better.
If you didn't smile, check your pulse
priceless
What was that? Oh I got it. That was how those older masters learned
Was Richard there as one of the presenters and teachers, or just as an interested participant?
I was there as a teacher. It was a blast!
@@NashvilleTuneStream cool bananas! Wow! What a gig! 🤗😎
imagine you explain Tommy how and what to play....
Richard is easily his peer, great player. Plus they are good friends.
Conversation...
Two of the greatest and rude ass people talking!!!
Shut up and listen, people!!!
dady stop drinking
All those people talking in the background - have they no respect???
They can't respect what they don't have the slightest understanding.
@ Jerry:
Agreed. Most likely not disrespect - its plain mental narrowness. Blockheadedness.
Anyone being able to capture what they're just witnessing, would shut up in the very second, dropping jaw..
Two of the world's best guitarists playing terrible music... 😜
It's a pity that those party fools in the background don't stop their sqawking and yapping. They missed some great music and 2 great musicians.
Had to stop a minute in, all the chattering in the background was beyond irritating.
I'm just confused as to how there are people around just chatting to each other while this is happening.
Imho it actually adds to this fabulous hour with these guys and gives a more intimate experience. A cool experience for Akira.
Akira, you were destined to be there with your camera that evening. Just imagine that these seven video clips had not been filmed. I dread too. These gifted men are in their element, playing informally in each other's company and you informally captured the moment to perfection. To say that I am grateful would be an understatement. Thank you for a treasure.
Fascinating to see a couple of top pro's working together to do their thing: perfecting. So relaxed, yet not being able to resist just one more run through, only stopping when satisfied it's right. And the genius Tommy as always, so generous, and so happy, whenever wherever, so long as there's a guitar involved. Thanks for posting - great to see.
Thank you. Glad you like it!
They collaborate so well together. They may be the only pickers in the world that can keep up with each other.
Good grief, I wish these two would collaborate on an album as Chet and Jerry did three times....
I could just sit there and listen to them jam all afternoon!
Such a pleasure to watch Tommy and big bear Richard play!!!!
This video is so great for any músic lover! Tommy Emmanuel's inspiration comes from a beautiful and always joyful soul. Thanks for posting!!!
Tommy always projects that he's having a really good time with his music!
It seems as if TE is having a good time. He's not. Oh, I'm sure he actually believes he is having fun, but he's not. TE only "thinks" he is happy. Poor soul.
It's remarkable the encyclopedia of songs that run through these guys minds... It just never seems to end and, regardless of the number of players that jump in to join them, they all know what part they will play instantly.
Muskrat Ramble inspired by the version of Merle Travis and Chet Atkins in the Atkins-Travis travelin' Show LP ...
Thanks for putting this on youtube Akira as I wanted to be there but had family commitments. Just loved watching the pros jam. Always wanted to learn 'Deed I do' and Richard Smith showed the terrific chords in my singing key. Awesome!
I smiled, laughed, stomped my foot and slapped my thigh. What fun...Thank You gentlemen!!
Definitely tapping my foot
+Akira Satoyoshi
Thanks so much for capturing this! LEGENDS and so down to earth. What an awesome experience for you! 👍
This makes me remember some years ago, when me and a friend would just hang out and play for hours and hours, and mostly our conversations were literally like this hahahah. So much fun!! Ofc we we're not playing NEARLY at this level of play, but it was a blast! Watching this two monsters playing is just wonderful!
these guys are way cooler than any drunk druged out rock bands!!!!!!!
It does not get better than this ! Two of the finest guitar-entertainers in the world jamming . So sweet music . I`ll never get tired of this . 😉🤩
Such a joy to see and hear two great musicians in their prime.
I'm getting the idea that Tommy knows the fret board like a chemist knows the periodic table.
Thank you so much for posting these videos, Akira. And congratulations on attending and interacting with these wonderful musicians!

TWO MAGIC MUSICIANS ! GOD HAS CREATED THE LAWS OF MUSIC AND HARMONY -
just to show us a little bit of PARADISE .but he also let us know , that the way to the
PARADISE OF MUSIC is a hard one . greetings from Germany to TOMMY und RICHARD !
Absolutly divine ... It's great see you and Richard together.
Wow, two legends together! Guitar shredders of highest caliber. I d could listen to them all day long!
Tommy Emmanuel = the Jimmy Hendrix of acoustic guitar.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Richard play a steel string acoustic guitar before.
richard smith is for real
P.U.R.E. entertainment ... thank you 💖
magicians with guitars
Richard Smith should play more on these steel strings guitars like here, where they switched guitars with Tommy.
I loved this!! I wish so much they could have played with the Buena Vista Social Club! I love that music so much ... wonder if these guys have ever played Cuban traditional before? I’d die to hear them play that!!!
Tommy Emmanuel is my hero, but Richard Smith is amazing as well
They like that ending so much, that they can not stop playing it. 🤗
Oh there it is..... oh yeah there it is.. no wait, there it is...🤣🤣🤣 good work lads..
People are talking in the background! WTF!!! Here they have the two greatest acoustic guitar players on earth and the audience is virually ignoring them. Conversing like senior citizens with their hearing aids off. Loud and distracting, and just plain rude. WTF .. WTF .. WTF????
Imagine people standing around, jabbering on, while Picasso and Rembrandt paint something TOGETHER.
The tune they jam on is Muskrat Ramble.
Back in the '70s John Miller applied his genius to develop an open D tuning version of this tune with a totally engaging stop time intro.

When, oh when, will these two genuine Guitar Monsters collaborate on a joint album? I can't begin to imagine the mind-blowing arrangements they would come up with!
Totally agree. That would be so awesome!
This is such a great video for so many reasons. Both Richard and Tommy view each other as players, not rivals. They appear to genuinely like each other. The mutual respect is very obvious to all. The best part for me was when they get going on Muskrat Ramble (not One Mint Julep). I closed my eyes and I could both see and hear Chet and Jerry. My heart skipped a few beats. Wouldn't it be great if Rich and Tommy made a pair of duet albums together, ala the two memorable 70s Chet and Jerry albums? "Me and Tommy" and "Me and Richard"? Thank you, Mr. Satoyoshi, for this magnificent video!
Mutual respect and friends for sure great people the don't hurt each other they clearly teach each other
+David Fournier Tommy’s definitely the elder, more experienced of the two. Both legendary stature though.
For sure I am a new fan and student of Tom and others
It's one of my favourite videos. Two fantastic players learning from each other.
Amazing.. In a league of their own. ♥️
I thought I could play guitar but...ho...well...so much to learn. Is'nt that great. X
try to make it to his concert. you will really enjoy it and usually you can get close. My friends who aren't into guitar even enjoyed it
h
TE is so quick to hand over, to share his guitar - just astonishing. TE stands out as the humble best of the two.
The guitar belonged to another guy though
The guitar belonged to the Cameraman Akira and you heard Tommy politely ask if it was OK for Richard to use it
@@livb6945
God bless TE.
Masters. I'd love to play guitar like these guys.
That‘s what I would call jamming. Just great. Could listen to it for hours and hours.
Just goes to show ya that even the very best players can still learn something new and are tickled when they do! It made their day.
Everything said here is true, but you’ve also got to include Doyle in this!
AH YEA WHO ARE THE RUDE PEOPLE IN THE BACK GROUND !
Спасибо огромное,, Томми ,, спасибо!!!!!🎸🌈🕊️ Жду в Улан-Удэ, приезжай!!!!
Хорошо играешь! 😊
Those vids never go long enough
That last lick on one mint julep is just too goddamn slick. I just can't get my fill of it!
I believe that is a diminished lick
@@robertchurch5537 Right on, brother! Thanks!
"And it's 1-2-3, what are we fightin' for? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn. Next stop is Vietnam." Did not know that Country Joe song came from this.
Yeah, my first association! Woodstock :-) But it is a traditional?
Awesome video, thank you for posting up.
Admittedly i know nothing about guitar playing but holy balls.
Genius
Two extremely talented guys doing their thang...love it!!
Masters at work - it reminds of the "The third man"
There it is. There it was, and there it always shall be! Beautiful stuff.
