Summary(Important Notes) of The Stories of The Prophets- 32. The Story of Adam (#20): Sheth and Idrīs Part-2 Personal note: السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته This is Part-2 of the summary. Part-1 is commented in a different comment as the summary is too long to be commented on in one comment. The other comment is also in this comment box. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. The personal note ends... The Story of Idris(AS) - Idris(AS) is mentioned twice by name in the Qur’an. He(AS) is mentioned with the other Prophets and in passing, we do not have any incident or story about Idris(AS) in the Qur’an. He(AS) is mentioned in as follows - 1. Surah Maryam, Ayah 56. 2. Surah Al-Anbiyah, Ayah 85. Idris(AS) is mentioned right after Ismail(AS) both times. We do not know why. In the Tafseer literature, we find a number of information about Idris(AS) coming from various sources with various level of validity. The former very knowledgeable Rabbi who converted to Islam as a young man and interacted with the 1st generation of the Sahaba, Ka’b Al-Ahbar gives a report about Idris(AS). Although Ka’b Al-Ahbar is a very respectable and honorable Tabi’, the information he gives can have some contamination from the Judeo-Christian sources and many of them are questionable from a theological standpoint. The story goes as follows - Idris(AS) allegedly wanted to renegotiate his(AS) time of Death with the Angel of Death. So he(AS) convinced an Angel to take him(AS) up to the Heavens to talk to the Angel of Death. Idris(AS) allegedly rode on the back of this Angel and the Angel was going upwards. The Angel was going up with Idris(AS) on his back and when they reached the 4th Heaven, they both saw the Angel of Death coming down. The Angel of Death saw this strange phenomena happening and enquires on what’s going on. The other Angel says that he was taking Idris(AS) up to meet the Angel of Death. When he heard it was Idris(AS), the Angel of Death was amazed. He said that Allah had told him to take Idris(AS)’s soul in the 4th Heaven and he had been confused on how could that happen when Idris(AS) was on Earth. And his(AS)’s soul was taken in the 4th Heaven. And this is what Allah means when He says - وَرَفَعۡنَٰهُ مَكَانًا عَلِيًّا And We raised him to a high station. (Surah Maryam, Ayah 19) Was Idris(AS) raised above in reality or could it refer to his status and position? 1. The great scholar Ibn Hajar comments, “The fact that Idris(AS) was raised up when he(AS) was alive is not mentioned in any authentic report that we should rely upon.” 2. Another opinion comes from Mujahid (another Tabi’) who said, “Idris(AS) was raised up alive to Jannah just like Isa(AS) was raised up alive to Jannah.” He did not tell us what he thinks happened after he(AS) was raised up alive, we do not know if Mujahid thought that Idris(AS) is still alive today or he(AS) died in Jannah or something else. There is silence. 3. Yet another opinion to explain the Ayah is that he(AS) was raised up and he(AS) died on the 6th Heaven. Who was Idris(AS)? There are two opinions: 1. Idris is Akhnookh (Enoch), who came in the 7th generation after Adam(AS) - This is the majority opinion and scholars such as At-Tabari, Ibn Katheer, Ibn Sa’d and others. So the chronology of Prophets would be - Adam(AS), Sheth(AS), Idris(AS), and Nuh(AS) and so on. According to the Bible, Enoch is the great grandfather of Nuh(AS). He is referred to in some Biblical narrations: 1. Genesis, Chapter 5, Verse 24 - Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. 2. Hebrew, Chapter 11, Verse 5 - By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. In the commentaries of the Old Testaments, there are many stories of Idris(AS) being raised to the Heavens and appointed the Guardian of the Heavenly Treasures and more. These are very similar to what we find from the narrations of Ka’b Al-Ahbar. The differences seen between the two can be explained by understanding that Ka’b Al-Ahbar came from the Yemeni strand of Jewism whereas most of the Jewish books we find today are from the Babylonian strand. There is a book that they say Enoch wrote called the Book of Enoch. 2. Idris is not Enoch, he(AS) is a Prophet from the Isrealites[after Musa(AS)] - This is the opinion of Imam Al-Bukhari and some of the Sahaba like Ibn Abbas and Ibn Masud. The Hadith is very weak so they don’t accept it and they believe that others confuse Idris(AS) with Enoch which is a mistake. Ibn Abbas and Ibn Masud felt that the Qur’an referred to Idris in Surah As-Saffat, Ayah 130 - “سَلَامٌ عَلَىٰ إِلْ يَاسِينَ” (Peace upon Elias). So, they think that the reference to Elias is actually Idris. Of the evidences used for this is by Imam Al-Bukhari is the Sahih Bukhari report of Al-Isra wal-Mi’raj. When the Prophet(SAW) went up, he(SAW) met Adam(AS), Ibrahim(AS), Isa(AS), and Idris(AS). Adam(AS) and Ibrahim(AS) greet the Prophet(SAW) by saying “Noble son.” since they were the fathers of the Prophet(SAW). When he(SAW) met Idris(AS), Idris(AS) said “Noble brother”. He(AS) did not greet him(SAW) like Adam(AS) and Ibrahim(AS) by calling him(SAW) a son, rather he(AS) called him(SAW) a brother. So Imam Al-Bukhari uses this to say that Idris(AS) is not a father. Ibn Hajar disagrees with Imam Al-Bukhari and says “There is no evidence in this whatsoever. Rather either one can say this is a mistake done by narrators (they narrated by meaning) or Idris(AS) is being humble and not raising himself(AS) to the level of Adam(AS) or Ibrahim(AS) and saying ‘O Noble Brother’.” The majority of the scholars say that Idris(AS) is Akhnookh (Enoch). Hadith of an unnamed Prophet that is attributed to Idris(AS): There are references in Hadith to a Prophet which many have interpreted to be Idris(AS). This is a Sahih Hadith in Sahih Al-Bukhari. The Prophet(SAW) was asked by Muawiyah ibn Al-Hakam about the permissibility of خَط الرَّمَل (Geomancy - sand divination). The Prophet(SAW) was very clear and blunt in forbidding things when it comes to “predicting future” - palm reading, tea leaves, astrology. But when it came to Geomancy, he(SAW) gave a very atypical answer, he(SAW) said, “There used to be a Prophet who would draw in الرَّمَل. So whoever’s prediction comes out to be true, it is because of that Prophet.” Instead of saying it is Haraam, the Prophet(SAW) respected the right of the previous Prophet to do this and indirectly prohibited us from doing it since we are not Prophets and our predictions/interpretations can be right or wrong. Only that Prophet’s predictions of the divination of sand was always correct because that was what Allah taught him. Ibn Hibban’s Hadith tells us that Idris(AS) was the first to blessed with the art of writing. Allah gifts different Prophets with different blessings. Adam(AS) was blessed with speech, Nuh(AS) was blessed with building of ships, Dawud(AS) was blessed with the ability to mould iron as per his wish and so on and so forth. The notion came that Idris(AS) was the founder of civilisation. And more bizarre things have been said regarding what all Allah blessed Idris(AS) with. But the notion of writing predating the flood does not sit right with known history. So this Hadith from Sahih Al-Bukhari reconciled with this discrepancy and says that Idris(AS) knew the art of divination (writing) in the sand and thus not the modern writing that we know of. However, the Hadith does not mention the Prophet by name so it could be another Prophet altogether. We do not know. To conclude, Idris(AS) could be Akhnookh or Elias(AS). Both opinions are plausible but there is no definitive evidence. The bottomline is that there is nothing definitive about Idris(AS) except that he(AS) is a Prophet and Allah raised him(AS) to a high position. We leave its reality and Tafseer to Allah. Allah wants us to remember him(AS) and so we do. We love, respect, and honor him(AS) as a Prophet. After that, we do not know and Allah knows best. As for Sheth, literally nothing is mentioned in the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah. We do not even know if he existed and if he was a Prophet. Only Allah knows best. This ends the entire summary. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair
Alhamdulillah Today Allah has cleared many of my misconceptions about prophet Sheath and Idris through shaikh. May Allah grant you rewards. And these stories are being taught in Islamic institutions and have quiz on them. Who is the 2nd prophet, idrish. But in reality we know nothing. May Allah gives us knowledge. Only Allah is all knowing.
ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ ... ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ.... ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ..... My tweets, emails, Instagram DMs' to Sheikh Yasir finally worked... I disturbed him so many times to give a lecture on Andalus (he did recently) and continue this series... جَزَاكَ ٱللَّٰهُ خَيْرًا شيخ ياسر
First time listening to Him and didn’t know it’s been an hour, سبحان الله and جزاك الله. Just want to mention you forgot to mention Yahya AS, when you mentioned Anbiyah in Surah e Maryam at around 31 minutes.
Summary(Important Notes) of The Stories of The Prophets- 32. The Story of Adam (#20): Sheth and Idrīs Part-1 Personal note: السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته This is Part-1 of the summary. Part-2 is commented in a different comment as the summary is too long to be commented on in one comment. The other comment is also in this comment box. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. The personal note ends... The purpose of stories that Allah has given is to teach moral lessons and reflection. It is not the methodology of Allah to go into superfluous details like genealogy which is found in the Christian and Jewish sources. This is the methodology of mankind, who are chronological and bore the readers with unimportant details. All this poses a serious question on the validness of Christian and Jewish sources. With that said, we should be aware of what they say and what our scholars took from their sources. Although these sources don’t bear any academic merit, it is okay to narrate from them as long as there is no theological harm. The bottomline is that if something is not found in the Qur’an and Sunnah, then it is not binding upon Muslims to believe in that thing. So we become aware of it but we don’t really need to believe in it. There is no way to verify whether it is true or not. Much of it simply doesn’t add up. The Story of Sheth(Seth) - According to Judeo-Christian sources, Adam(AS) had only 3 sons and not many sons. Habil and Qabil were the older two sons, and Sheth was the younger son. The Qur’an does not give any indication of Sheeth, directly or indirectly. His name is not found in any primary or secondary books of Hadith. However, it is found in the tertiary books of Hadith like Musnad Ibn Hibban. Ibn Balban later rearranged the hadith chapters of Musnad Ibn Hibban to make it more easily readable. So the Hadith of our interest is in Volume 2, Page 76, Hadith no. 361. There is a long Hadith with a long chain back to Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari. This is the Hadith in which the Prophet(SAW) was asked “How many Prophets?” The Prophet(SAW) said, “124,000.” Then Abu Dharr asked, “How many Messengers?” The Prophet(SAW) said, “310 and something, a large quantity.” Then “Who was the first of them?” The Prophet(SAW) said, “Adam(AS).” Then “Was he a Nabi whom Allah sent?” The Prophet(SAW) said, “Yes, Allah created him with His hands, blew His Ruh into him and spoke to him directly.” Then the Prophet(SAW) allegedly said, “O Abu Dharr, 4 of them Assyrian - Adam(AS), Sheeth, Akhnookh and he is Idris and he was the first who wrote with the pen, and Nuh(AS). 4 were from the Arabs, O Abu Dharr, - Hud(AS), Shuayb(AS), Salih(AS), and Your Prophet Muhammad(SAW).” Then “O Messenger of Allah, how many books did Allah reveal?” The Prophet(SAW) allegedly said, “100 books, 4 of them were larger books. Sheth was given 50 scrolls. Akhnookh was given 30 scrolls. Ibrahim(AS) was given 10 scrolls. Musa(AS) was given before the Torah, 10 scrolls and then Allah revealed the Torah, the Injeel, the Zabur, and the Qur’an.” And the Hadith goes on. This Hadith is not just weak, it is very weak. There are signs of its weakness from the beginning to end such as - 1. Its length. The Hadith is very long to be remembered. 2. Its extreme amount of minute details which is bizarre to find. 3. The claim that Adam(AS) is Assyriac is logically not possible. Assyrian were ancient but they weren’t the first civilisation, there are documented evidences that there were humans before Assyrian. Adam(AS) couldn’t be from any civilisation since he(AS) is the founder of all civilizations. The meaning of classifying a Hadith as weak/fabricated is essentially that, in all likelihood, somebody said this and, by mistake, it was projected back to the mouth of the Prophet(SAW). There is no authentic mention of Sheeth in the Qur’an and the Sunnah but because he occurs in a very weak Hadith, some things have been mentioned in the books of Tafseer. At-Tabari mentions a number of things about Sheth, both in the Tafseer and the Tareekh - 1. Ibn Abbas has said - When Adam(AS) died, Sheth said to Jibreel, “O Jibreel, pray the Salat over Adam(AS).” Jibreel said, “Actually you pray over your own father.” And he taught Sheth how to pray Salat-ul-Janazah. And he said, “Say the Takbeer 30 times. 5 of them is how you are supposed to pray Salat-ul-Janazah and rest of the 25 is a blessing and a honor for the Prophet Adam(AS).” 2. An early storyteller Wahab says, “Sheth, the son of Adam(AS), was the most handsome of all the children of Adam(AS), the best of children of Adam(AS), the one who resembled Adam(AS) the most, the one who Adam(AS) loved the most. And he is the one whom Adam(AS) handed the legacy down to, he was the one who took charge after Adam(AS). And he is the father of all other children of Adam(AS). Sheth was the one who first built the Kaabah with brick and clay. Allah sent upon Sheth 50 scrolls. Sheth lived for 912 years. Sheth had a son called Anoch and many other children. Anoch had a son called Kinaan. Kinaan had a son called Mahla’il. Mahla’il had a son called Yarid. And Yarid had a son called Akhnookh and that is Idris.” This lineage to Idris is completely taken from the Biblical narrations. 3. Another bizarre story found is that Adam(AS) warned Sheth on his(AS) deathbed and told him to not let his sons marry Cain’s daughters since Cain’s descendants are all astray. Sheth took his sons and lived away from the daughters of Cain. So Sheth and his family lived on the mountains and Cain’s descendants lived on the shores. After a 100 years or so, descendants from Sheth came down from the mountains. They got enticed by Cain’s daughters and they committed adultery. And with that, adultery and wine became common among the people. And Allah then sent the Prophet Nuh(AS) in the next few generations. Role of the Persona of Sheeth in Esoteric Religions: Two ancient religions that are still existing are Mandaenism and Yazidis. Both of them consider Sheth to be a very seminal figure in their traditions. Mandaeans are very secretive about their religion, they do not accept converts. They are the ones whom the Qur’an calls as “وَٱلصَّـٰبِـِٔينَ” (Sabiens) in Surah Al-Hajj, Ayah 17. They are a very small religion whose numbers are dwindling. They are a gnostic faith who have the concept of duality. Their religion goes back to some Prophetic revelation. They have clear understanding of Heaven, Hell, Prophets (Sheth, Yahya - John the Baptist), Ghusl, Fasting, Prayers, and some forms of Shariah law. They believe that Sheth taught and was a mentor to John the Baptist. They are found in Iraq. Many classical scholars considered Mandeans to be like Ahl-e-Kitab. The Priests group are considered elitists and it is very difficult to be chosen to become a Priest in Mandeanism. Yazidis have a syncretic (merging of two or three other faiths) religion which goes back to a long time in history. The theology is bizarre. They have Islamic termanologies but they are not Muslims. They are found in Iraq. Thier faith tradition goes back to the precursor to Zoroastrians. There are many misconceptions about them, the common perception is that they are ‘devil-worshippers’. Sheth is very revered figure in this religion, he is called ‘Keeper of Secrets’. Even if Sheth actually existed, the persona of Sheth is depicted now like mythical figure who these kind of groups conveniently find to latch on their faith and beliefs to. There is a claim that the Mandeans and Yazidis have preserved the original teachings of Sheth in a book form but this is logically not possible. They may have something from the old teachings but we know it has been corrupted over time, no book has been preserved completely except the Qur’an. This ends Part-1 of the summary. Part-2 is in a different comment. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair
Assalamualaikum sister. Jazakallah for the summary. Do you recommend any book that has very clear n depth knowledge on our prophets? And did you wrote down this much summary in a book? Im curious.
@@sjt8500 Walaikum Assalam. BarakaAllah Fi. I think the only book I am aware of is Qasas-ul-Anbiyaa by Ibn Katheer. I have written all my summaries for keeping them safe.
Sheikh please pause here before you go to nooh Alaihisalam, please make an hour video on why did the ancient people lived for centuries and we hardly live 70 years ? why did Allah decreased our life span? how do we rationalize prophets age in our current day to day lives? you are the only scholar I can ask this question other scholars will doubt our imaan , please make a video on Longevity age claims of previous prophets
Salam alaykum Sheikh jazakum Allah khayran. Wouldnt the narration of miraj that he met him in the 4th heaven added to what you mentioned from bible + ورفعناه مكانا عليا all together strengthen the narration from Kaab or that it has a basis to it at least, as the fact both mention 4th heaven doesnt seem coincidence. Jazakum Allah khayran
Shaykh how do we know chronology of these Prophets? Brother Nouman would probably get deep into the Qur'an mentioning Idris after Ismail, twice. Similarly Dhul Kifl is twice mentioned, both after Ismail (Al Ambiya 21:85 & Saad 38:48). In these two ayat Idris & Alyasa are in the middle respectively. Alayhimussalam.
There are legitimate theories and findings that advanced human civilization predated the flood. What I would really like to see is some sort of Islamic scholarship in the archeological field that could sift through some of these findings to give us a better picture. Sites such as Gobekli Tepe in Turkey seem to be affirming the notion that human civilization was more advanced at an earlier period than modern day archeology would have us believe.
Salamun Alaykum. Dr Yasir Qadhi, I have a question. You clearly told Quran did not talk about these stories explicitly, so the authentic sunnah. Then why do we carry on and pass to next generation? why can't we debunk them for good? Thank you
@Confidential I did not get it. Are you saying his role is to tell us which story is true and which one is fabricated? If so., I do not agree with you that. I can see Dr Yasir a sign of maturity. Few years back he was staunch believer of these stories. I can see he is in between.
@@oldiswisdom5535 I don't think he is saying that is his role. It's just that for this particular lecture he's telling you what you might hear that is fake. I actually thought that Idris was the first person to write with the pen. Now I've learned that is false. Sh. YQ does that all the time actually. Did it often with the seerah. Imam Ahmad taught his son over 1,000 hadith and then after his son learned them he told them that they are all fake. And the reason for that is that now he would know that any other hadith is true. And Allah knows best.
Finally a new episode to this!

Summary(Important Notes) of
The Stories of The Prophets-
32. The Story of Adam (#20): Sheth and Idrīs
Part-2
Personal note:
السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته
This is Part-2 of the summary. Part-1 is commented in a different comment as the summary is too long to be commented on in one comment. The other comment is also in this comment box. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
The personal note ends...
The Story of Idris(AS) -
Idris(AS) is mentioned twice by name in the Qur’an. He(AS) is mentioned with the other Prophets and in passing, we do not have any incident or story about Idris(AS) in the Qur’an. He(AS) is mentioned in as follows -
The story goes as follows -
Idris(AS) allegedly wanted to renegotiate his(AS) time of Death with the Angel of Death. So he(AS) convinced an Angel to take him(AS) up to the Heavens to talk to the Angel of Death. Idris(AS) allegedly rode on the back of this Angel and the Angel was going upwards. And this is what Allah means when He says -
وَرَفَعۡنَٰهُ مَكَانًا عَلِيًّا
And We raised him to a high station.
(Surah Maryam, Ayah 19)
Was Idris(AS) raised above in reality or could it refer to his status and position?
1. The great scholar Ibn Hajar comments, “The fact that Idris(AS) was raised up when he(AS) was alive is not mentioned in any authentic report that we should rely upon.”
2. Another opinion comes from Mujahid (another Tabi’) who said, “Idris(AS) was raised up alive to Jannah just like Isa(AS) was raised up alive to Jannah.”

3. Yet another opinion to explain the Ayah is that he(AS) was raised up and he(AS) died on the 6th Heaven.
Who was Idris(AS)?
There are two opinions:
1. Idris is Akhnookh (Enoch), who came in the 7th generation after Adam(AS) -
This is the majority opinion and scholars such as At-Tabari, Ibn Katheer, Ibn Sa’d and others. So the chronology of Prophets would be - Adam(AS), Sheth(AS), Idris(AS), and Nuh(AS) and so on.

Summary(Important Notes) of
The Stories of The Prophets-
32. The Story of Adam (#20): Sheth and Idrīs
Part-1
Personal note:
السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته
This is Part-1 of the summary.
The Story of Sheth(Seth) -
According to Judeo-Christian sources, Adam(AS) had only 3 sons and not many sons.
This is the Hadith in which the Prophet(SAW) was asked “How many Prophets?”
The Prophet(SAW) said, “124,000.”
Then Abu Dharr asked, “How many Messengers?”
The Prophet(SAW) said, “310 and something, a large quantity.”
Then “Who was the first of them?”
The Prophet(SAW) said, “Adam(AS).”
Then “Was he a Nabi whom Allah sent?”
The Prophet(SAW) said, “Yes, Allah created him with His hands, blew His Ruh into him and spoke to him directly.”
Then the Prophet(SAW) allegedly said, “O Abu Dharr, 4 of them Assyrian - Adam(AS), Sheeth, Akhnookh and he is Idris and he was the first who wrote with the pen, and Nuh(AS).
4 were from the Arabs, O Abu Dharr, - Hud(AS), Shuayb(AS), Salih(AS), and Your Prophet Muhammad(SAW).”
Then “O Messenger of Allah, how many books did Allah reveal?”
The Prophet(SAW) allegedly said, “100 books, 4 of them were larger books. Sheth was given 50 scrolls. Akhnookh was given 30 scrolls. Ibrahim(AS) was given 10 scrolls. Musa(AS) was given before the Torah, 10 scrolls and then Allah revealed the Torah, the Injeel, the Zabur, and the Qur’an.”
And the Hadith goes on.
This Hadith is not just weak, it is very weak. There are signs of its weakness from the beginning to end such as -
At-Tabari mentions a number of things about Sheth, both in the Tafseer and the Tareekh -
1. 5 of them is how you are supposed to pray Salat-ul-Janazah and rest of the 25 is a blessing and a honor for the Prophet Adam(AS).”
2. And Yarid had a son called Akhnookh and that is Idris.”
This lineage to Idris is completely taken from the Biblical narrations.
Role of the Persona of Sheeth in Esoteric Religions:
Two ancient religions that are still existing are Mandaenism and Yazidis.

@@maryamkhan5522 Is ibn katheer in detail? Have you read it?
@@sjt8500 Yes, the unabridged one is in detail.

South Africa
💙💙💙
finally
I thought I might not be alive to see the next episode 🥺
Mandaeans also have Ritual Sacrifice. I believe if ulema studied them, they'll easily classify them as people of the book.
4:39 imam Bukhari, Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn Abbas
Salam alaykum Sheikh jazakum Allah khayran.
Wouldnt the narration of miraj that he met him in the 4th heaven added to what you mentioned from bible + ورفعناه مكانا عليا all together strengthen the narration from Kaab or that it has a basis to it at least, as the fact both mention 4th heaven doesnt seem coincidence.
Jazakum Allah khayran
I didn’t even know anything about prophet Idris, let alone he was the first to write or sew!!!
When are these going to be done in person?
Sheikh i have observed that Allah only mentions two prophets as SIDDIQAN NABIYA? truthful prophets - Idris and Ibrahim Alaihisalam, why is that so?
Who's the reciter at the beginning mashaallah
Will anyone be kind enough to provide me the link of the quran recitation at the beginning?
JazakAllah
That's Minshawi(Mujawwad)
Sheikh, what is the name of the song at the end of your videos?
We need timestamps!
Thank you
Brilliant question. And MashAllah! He is the perfect person to answer it. May Allah protect him. Aameen
