This movie is hella formative for me. I watched it as a kid and was so fascinated by how Milo could just decipher the language of Atlantis through his sheer knowledge of the society. And now I have a bachelor's in Anglistics and Cultural Studies and am currently applying for a Master's degree to be able to work in a museum
The plot hole more comes from the fact that the Atlanteans live for thousands of years. Kida was alive back when Atlantis first fell, and so was her father. So how did they forget to read? It would make sense if the people forgot how to read over several generations, but they are the same generation!
@@Dachusblot If you don't use a skill, you lose it. If they stopped reading their own texts for whatever reason, they'd likely lose the ability to read it. My best bet is Atlantis lost its need for written language along with their advancement in technology. We're starting to see this now, in our real world, thanks to AI. The people stopped using their reading and writing skills and lost it over the hundreds and hundreds of years. It might even have been something of a lost art and nearly dead by the time of the Great Flood.
@@Dachusblot my personal head canon is that this is the kind of society that reading was highly restricted to the very upper classes. Perhaps even just its royalty. Like how in some Christian faith only the pastor may read the Bible. (Weird still imo! How do you agree with something you’ve only ever been allowed to hear through someone else’s lips?) Kida was too young, her mother died, perhaps the upper class scribes died, and the key: her father was blinded. If he was not blind I garuntee they’d still know how to read!
It's funny how Disney _really thought_ that they had to stay so SAFE with their films, to protect the children from ANY darkness, anything disturbing, or any real, _raw_ emotions, like real rage or grief or madness. Even as a child, my favorite films were always Don Bluth's, especially The Secret of NIMH, An American Tale, and The Land Before Time. I wanted to watch _those_ WAY more often than Disney Renaissance films, because I could _tell_ that Bluth's films treated me like I could _handle_ some scary stuff. An American Tale was about a child _getting lost from his family_ -- what child hasn't feared that?? The Secret of NIMH showed that creepy rat experimentation scene, and the face of a mother as she LOST HER FREAKING CHILDREN before her eyes!! The Land Before Time SHOWED a child _losing his mother_ ON SCREEN. And all of them show the appropriate amount of abject terror, rage, grief, and horror on their faces. It FELT real, even though it felt scary. Even as a child, I think we could tell that Disney wouldn't go there. I know I did. From what I can recall, Hunchback and The Lion King are the ONLY ones that "went there" with the Real trauma and emotions. And, not coincidentally, I think those are a couple of their very best masterpieces.
Who is Milo Tatch? He is every nerdy boy or girl who longs for adventure, knowledge, friendship, reading all day long, researching for months on end, and forgetting to bring along his house keys and lunch but still has his binoculars and coat on reverse. That's who Milo is and I'm here for the breakdown. Thanks a lot for covering this movie! The explosions, the flying ships, and the one-liners from each character are also memorable!
At this point, all the millennials had embraced the Post-Renaissance era as our favorite Disney era by being "cult classics" or "underrated movies", there isnt a single millennial that will not say their favorite movie is from the 2000s Disney era, we all collectively embraced this era as our own treasures. I for myself LOVE Emperor's New Groove and Brother Bear, these are for me peak comedy and emotional movies Disney ever created.
I will forever be a loud and proud champion for this movie. It's not perfect, but it's something special (and certainly unique for Disney). It's earned a permanent spot in my Top 5 Disney flicks.
I just wanted to say I thought that your script for this video and your delivery and the editing was really excellent! I can feel the hard work you put into it :) love this movie and you’re right, we didn’t get enough time with the world. There is so much creativity and beauty in Atlantas, seems such a shame we didn’t get more of it.
First time being here and your video formt reminds me a lot of BREADSWORD; if you havent watched their videos then i recommend :)))) either way, you have a very engaging and welcoming vibe about you :)) i hope the channel grows and does well!!!!
I greatly enjoyed listening to this video essay! I hope you keep putting more out there, you perfectly summarized the film, both it's flaws and successes, and the disappointment of it's flop. i can't wait to see what other videos you release! the editing on this essay is also really solid! I loved every second!
This was the movie of my childhood. I had it VHS tape and my wallet now is Atlantis themed. I would love an adventure series, maybe more darker themes and fantasy. Such an amazing movie with a promising premise.
I always guessed the reason while they didn't know how to use the vehicles is because the guards (who used them mainly) were killed with the wave, and those that remain never need them for anything, as there is no use for what they were initially needed as there is no more people than the atlanteans. So why guards? Kida is, however, really curious. She's like Milo in the sense that she's into learning for learning's sake. So she'd be down for learning how to use an obsolete vehicle
I started to get into anime when Atlantis was coming to theaters. I saw that this movie has been heavily inspired by Nadia, secret of the blue water. I was a bit peeved it copied but I appreciated watching anything about Atlantis and steampunk
I recently bought a limited edition Kida doll from Disney shes just so beautiful I love her they only ever made 2 dolls of her. Off note: Avatar is totally stolen story from Atlantis its almost the same message.
Elementary teacher, I gotta advocate for my struggling readers! Written language is a human invention and reading is not a natural skill. It has to be explicitly taught and is very difficult.
This film was beautiful--but two things kept me from liking it: 1. It wasn't a musical, and the fact that the team wore shirts that ssaid "less songs, more explosions" felt like a statement that musicals were inferior to the current film they were crafting. I also wish we'd gotten "Kingdom of the Sun" and "Brother Bear" as a musical with Kenai as a human and his relationshop with his brothers (the film was originally conceived as a musical parallel to "The Lion King," but I don't think a human musical was ever conceived. Such a shame for both films.) 2. It wasn't magical enough for me. The film is science-fantasy, but I wanted more mystical, fantasy elements. I'm also iffy on how the animation is "blocky" in contrast to the smooth animation of their more famous 2D films, but I could overlook that if the main 2 issues were resolved.
I don't think it's underrated. It had fantastic ideas and potential and the movie just didn't live up to it. I think largely because it's too short. It rushed an epic story. They only spend a minute in the sub before it's wrecked. You get flooded with backstories of a big cast of characters instead of letting it come out more organically. It's very similar in tone and structure to Stargate. But Stargate did the same thing much better. And then both movies got tv shows that let them expand on their premise. But Stargate is the one that really paid it off best in both formats. I wanted to love this movie. But I didn't. I love the idea of it.
I 100% see where you’re coming from. The movie’s rushed pace is also my biggest issue because we aren’t able to truly experience this world and develop these characters in a more natural way.
I want to listen 🎧 to the video, but the music 🎶 with lyrics on the background is really annoying. Maybe is more intense because I’m wearing headphones, but I got to stop listening cause is driving me crazy
I want to love this film so badly. It looks gorgeous but I find the editing AWFUL. So needlessly quick and snappy. Treasure planet nails it. If only this were more like that.
Oh I ADORE Treasure Planet but Atlantis really couldn't convince me. The whole story seemed illogical and confusing, the crew characters were all drawn very ugly and really unsympathetic. Princess Kida and the other citizens of Atlantis were great, with beautiful design and a interesting language. But unfortunately you didn't really see much of their culture and habits. There was also way too much action and violence for my taste and there was a huge lack of emotion. So if Disney one day make a remake of this, I give it a new chance.
Atlantis & Treasure Planet deserved so much better
Absolutely 💯
100% agreed with Treasure Planet being my personal fav Disney movie growing up as a 90s baby
Honestly the scene of kida being “possessed” by the spirits is so beautifully animated it still gives me chills
"Hey, look, I made a bridge! And it only took me, what? Ten seconds. Eleven tops."
Honestly all of my favorites are from the post rennaissance era; Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet, Emperor's new Groove, and Atlantis.
same
Mine are from both Renaissance and post
Your videos are criminally underrated. Thank you for the time and effort you put into them ❤

The reading Atlantean thing is not a plot hole. You can fluently speak your native language and still be illiterate.
Yeah, when he said that I was super confused - like, you hopefully do know that speaking came before written language, right???
@@jessicadunham1903 That's what I'm saying. Children learn to speak before learning how to write.

I would argue Pocahontas goes there too. Because Kokoum is shot and killed in front of her and her dad was about to bash in John Smith’s skull.
This movie changed my life and I will always love it
In what ways it changed?
It breaks my heart that Atlantis amd Treasure Planet didn't make that money and weren't that successful as they deserved to have

The only Disney movie I’d be willing to go see a live action remake of
Same. Maybe Treasure Planet too.
Rouke is a such a great villain. Determined, ruthless, cold, and spiteful and he has a relationship with the other characters
Good video! Underrated movie for sure, reminded me a lot of BREADSWORDs "Treasure Planet - Disney's Biggest Mistake"
watch Stargate and Atlantis back to back, and they melt together
Was just about to say that lol they literally have the same o0eningn😂😭
Always loved this movie, so unfortunate how it got slept on. Excellent video, thanks for sharing with us

i'd kill to see a 10-12 1hr episode series liveaction reproduction of atlantis fleshing out more of the lore and characters and scenery
Watch Nadia and the secret of the blue water. It’s the Anime that inspired Atlantis
Atlantis deserves a live action adaptation. Easily one of my favorites from Disney.
I have seen this movie TOO many times. It is hidden beauty just like atlantis.
I love to songs in tbe background that are just faintly heard in tbe background. It brings the nostalgia out even more
Very cool congratulations for your work....I also rewatched Atlantis the lost empire this evening, great movie

Mad respect to you for the Gloria Scott background music at 3:56 💪🏾
Your storytelling is so great, so glad I was recommended your channel
17:22 his favorite Line in the movie (wich i quite like too!)
This video feels like being at a home party and being on a couch having a great conversation with a guy, while people dancing in the other room
Your voice is so smooth and silky.
Do you have a playlist of the background music in this video? It’s so good!

So the problem with talking about CG Disney, is that they didn't do it for any reason other than Traditional had a Union and CG still doesn't have one
Im 31 y/o and I really believe Atlantis shaped me more then any other movie I watched from Disney as a kid.
I recently bought a limited edition Kida doll from Disney shes just so beautiful I love her they only ever made 2 dolls of her. Off note: Avatar is totally stolen story from Atlantis its almost the same message.
And Atlantis is based off of victorian adventure novels. You dont get it yet. All art is like a tree.
What are your thoughts on Oliver and Company?
I love the Disney protagonist formula but I want it done right in both setting and writing
Ever heard of Secret of Blue Water?
Maybe he’s not an Anime person

The unrelated music in the background is distracting.
I wish I could turn the music down. It’s distracting.
Too much bass, had to turn off the video 7 minutes in though I agree the movie was great

Not sure about masterpiece. It has one standout sequence... Kida floating into the air. The rest is very forgettable.
