It's probably because of the CRTs lol. Games back then were made to be played on CRTs, and with those kinds of screens your mind is able to fill in the gaps more. Just search up examples of CRTs vs pixel accurate displays (for example Street Fighter or Castlevania) and you'll see what I mean
