People think this is weird. But this is how most of your grandparents lived. My dad raised us like this. I didn't listen to his advice and drowned myself in debt. Now 3 years later living cash only at 24 my husband hated it at first but loves the reactions when using cash. Imagine paying a 4400 car repair bill in cash and the owner says "You were raised well". It's humbling and rewarding.
Kathy Leighton you are missing out on huge perks. I have a credit card that I pay off every month and always have points to buy things or travel. I love it!! You also get tons of protection on any purchases you make. Again the trick is to pay off the credit card every month.
cindymx02 alot of people fall in to a hole of not being able to pay that's the thing, becomes so easy to hand over the plastic. I'd rather not have that kind of temptation
My marriage was cheap. We went to court, got married, and that was it. Parking was 16 dollars, the marriage certificate and license was about 40 dollars. Still happily married and don’t regret spending tens of thousands on a tradition that is ridiculously overpriced
"They drive their cars until they don't run anymore" if you take care of the car if could last almost forever. My jeep has over 250000 miles on it and it still works great cause we service it regularly.
rainepanda so true we have a 2005 which we got when we put down a 1998 Nissan última plus 2000 cash from a car dealer are truck use of course but the Nissan last is a good 7 years oh and it took us hours away from the city we live speaking of car service we just need right know a oil change and I'm hoping that's all but I'm thankful to have a mechanic husband 🙂for small work but he will get help by his friend who knows a lot more of mechanic 😁
I agree, my first care got almost 500,000 miles on it. Everyone made fun of the old beat up car but I’d like to see their car even reach half that many miles!
I didn't know that this was an odd way to live?! It's such an awesome feeling and so free to not have to worry about finances and payments! I'll NEVER own a credit card!
We've NEVER owned credit cards. We use the money we make only. we dont have debt like most, just our monthly living expenses. We have a nice house, and 2 vehicles that are paid for. its nice
jenn jeffs I have a few. I use them only if I have the cash. Why? So if I ever have an emergency which I can't afford, then I can take out a loan I have money saved. I can spend. But I like to build my credit.
I'm taking a financial course right now and the average credit card holder now spends 47% more than one who uses cash. No wonder the C.C. companies have such luxurious buildings.
Jean Muehlfelt I've used credit cards since high school in the 80s and in over 50 countries with no issues. I use my credit card like a debit card so no different than using cash. Prefer to contribute to retirement savings, taxable savings, emergency funds, and retire early. Other than first home I paid off in ten years I've always been debt free. But it doesn't end there. I also purchased several thousand shares of Visa and MasterCard in my Roth 401k long ago when they were around $6 a share because I have been learning all about personal finance and investing since grade school. Could see the future use and abuse of credit cards. Credit card debt crossed one trillion this year. These two credit cards crossed $100 a share earlier this year and I'm getting over $500 a month reinvested dividends. You have to think beyond just learning about finance and be more proactive. They might have luxurious buildings but I'm retiring early and these two credit card companies will be paying my medical insurance for the next 10 years until Medicare kicks in and beyond. I recommend reading the book "The Millionaire Next Door"
This is how we live because we refuse to go into debt. Thrift store clothing, cash cars, second hand furniture, etc. We have an abundance of food and things and don't feel deprived one bit. We do it by choice and we love it. It seems weird to people because most Americans are in debt up to their eyeballs because they're buying things they can't afford just to self soothe and/or pretend like they are wealthy and want to impress people! It's crazy!!!
Penguin Community children benefit greatly from private school . my parents sent me and my sister to private school k-8th grade. Private schools have better teachers, books, ciriculum and have a much better school experience . Not only that but it looks great on a college application and college is easier because you know more and in general you know more than most of the population I grew up like this family when I was in private school we were frugal we lived in a nice area but didnt go on vacations and my parents were careful with money. A lot of public schools are terrible especially down south. In the end its worth it
Penguin Community You have no idea where they live and what the public schools in their area are like. Before you start judging others, do yourself a favor and think a little bit mmmkay?
Maybe at the high school level it's worth it but not elementary. No college will care if you went to a glorified babysitting service which is what elementary school is.
Actually no. There are many many people who live in debt because they spend beyond their means. There are heaps of youtube videos of people using multiple cc and now struggling. This clip is for those who do not live within their means.
It's easier than people think. We live cash only. "Paycheck to paycheck" just means living within your means. It's the way it used to be before credit cards and debt. We live cash only. Debt free since June. No credit cards. No car payments. No student loans. We have money in the bank and we don't lack for anything. We have a full pantry, clothes on our backs, the kids attend a charter school that requires uniforms, and they participate in extracurricular activities. Cash only allows us to be a Stay At Home Mom. Our lives are rich! Credit card users only think their lives are rich but every month they waste money making payments for meals they've already flushed down the toilet.
I used to use credit cards like they were going out of style. Then, I lost my job with an insurance company in 1999 when the place was sold to a different insurance company. My credit sure took a beating; I've been doing the cold hard cash thing ever since.
This is how everyone should live. If you don't have the money for something, you don't deserve it. Live within your means. People are so concerned with pretending they own a house or car that the bank actually owns- you're not fooling anyone. My vehicles are paid for in cash and I have enough money saved up to buy a house if I want. So, to the suckers in the comments- have fun wasting thousands of dollars paying interest on a house that you won't own for 20 years. You could have planned ahead and done it on your own for a lot cheaper.
A house is an investment for future generations of your family is what my dad taught me. You may not necesarily have the money to pay it off in this moment, but if you and future generations continue to make payments on time, I say a house is a pretty solid investment regardless of it being paid off in whole or not. People who are financially responsible, I believe should live over their means within reason if it is an investment that will benefit future generations.
I worked for a temp to hire on agency and got hired on later, making only $12.00 an hour, I had to pay only my car off, buy a new cell phone, but by the time I got hired on, I got everything paid off.
It really isn't that hard to live below one's means. It takes discipline for sure, but it's a matter of creating a new habit and getting rid of old ones. Once you get rid of debt it's amazing how freeing living below your means is.
Almost 2024, and my family lives like this! We have a comfortable home, two cars, in a nice area. We don't have to wait for payday to buy shoes though....
Sounds good until you get robbed. It’s the credit card company’s problem if they steal your card and start using it. It’s your problem if they steal your cash or use your debit card linked to your money directly.
I decided to start living a cash only life a couple years ago after ruining my credit so young. Lately I've been trying to find a new place, and these days without credit, good luck. You're almost better off with shitty credit as opposed to none.
kassandra sjaarda I think a good option honestly is to save up for a huge down payment if you can. my husband and I ruined our credit. and now we plan on paying it off and then starting a savings plan. save enough money to buy 5 acres of land and then build a home. (small one) I honestly think it is feasible to buy even houses or land buy saving up. no loans needed. I hope you are able to find a good place. :)
I feel you. Im almost 30.. And no credit. Don't feel like a real adult. Its sad.. Dont even make enough to have a checking account.. Those pesky fees are evil. So cash only for now... :/
Nothing wrong with what they are doing, in fact, if more people did the same thing they would have a lot less problems. Our family did the same thing and have remained Debt Free for the las 13 years. When you pay cash, it makes you slow down and think more about the purchase before you purchase the item.
Paying your car insurance, mortgage/rent, utilities, water, and phone bill on time builds your credit. You don't need a credit card to build it. I bought a house at 4.25% interest. I have no debt (besides my mortgage) and no credit cards. Cash only for everything!! I love Dave Ramsey too.
Yea my mom always told me not to buy what you can't afford and pay with money you have. Now I have zero credit. Zero credit. Try getting anything with zero credit. A car or home. And I married my husband and found out he has a shit load of student debt. Like enough debt to be paying on a house and his credit is poor because of it. His parents just took him to the bank and had him sign loan papers without explaining anything. When we got married I went to his moms place and she just handed me all his loan bills and said here. He didn't even know he had so many loans and they would just pay on them now and then. They dumped them all on us at once. I had never seen that much debt in my life. Worst part is he didn't even finish the 4 yr college because they couldn't afford it!!! If I had known him while he was in school I would have helped him get every scholarship and grant available b4 getting a loan. That's what I did for school. In the end we both went the wrong rout. You need credit!!! You also need your credit to be good.
I am living cash only and within my means, have an emergency fund, and use my credit card as a debit card by prepaying everything. My take home pay is over $7k/month and live on less than $1500/month and the rest go to savings,Roth 401k,Roth IRA emergency funds, investments etc.. No kids, not married, and BastardKidFree® so no government or courts to tell me what to do. Girlfriend has her own money,home,etc..
Try living on $800 a month...btw: better hope those "Roth IRAs" are still available by the time you need them...remember 2008...can happen again at anytime!
I wish more people would live like this. I do, and it's great. I have all of my ducks in a row (Thank you God, my late husband and Suze Orman) and life is good :)
We do this too. (Thank you Dave Ramsey). I know someone though that charges EVERYTHING on credit. yes, everything. They don't pay things off and guess what, he's now filing bankruptcy
Living cash only is indeed a step toward financial freedom. The family depicted here has certainly paid off their debts and live within their means. However, the next step for them is to live below their means and to invest the money leftover every month to build wealth.
I am just realizing I'm weird? My dad used all cash raising us and my entire eleven year marriage we have lived on cash. If people just use a credit card where are the boundaries? That is scary.
I would love to do this. I just really don't know where to start considering we have a fairly large credit card debt and are in what's considered low income. I've been trying harder to not use the credit card for buying things at Walmart, using cash as much as possible, but that isn't always possible because we do run out sometimes. Does any know of any programs to help with getting on the right track?
That nice flat, sunny front yard can be turned into vegetables and fruits for the family. There are great seed companies that sell packets for $1.50 or less and you can get a huge harvest, depending on variety. Also, saving green onion ends, garlic cloves and other re-sprouting vegetables for planting can add lots of good food for no extra out-of-pocket expenses. It doesn't all have to come from a store. Being food independent is great.
This is pretty normal nowadays. That’s what living paycheck to paycheck means. If you have one or at the most two credit cards and you just buy gas or those” shoes she needed” and just paid it off the next month how is that unreasonable?
I think she’s a great mom. Usually I think ‘extreme’ people are unreasonable, but she’s just not going into debt. She and her family seem to have everything they need and the kids have things to look forward to. Shit, my dad made roughly $200,000.00 a year and we NEVER went to the zoo or had a pool.
Oh wow, this sounds pretty special to me. In switzerland usually people save money until they can buy things. But unfortunately many people also are starting to spend money they don't have, which in my opinion is a huge problem.
This isn't very smart if you are looking to one day buy a house using a mortgage. You have to build a credit history in order to get approved for a loan of that size. The best thing to do would be use a credit card but pay it off each month.
thats true, I only use my debit card but just got a secured credit card that Im only going to use for $20 worth of gas a month just to build credit. I understand not wanting to use credit cause I hate spending money I dont have, but I also want good credit.
Well I'm glad they came up that way that's awesome for us I am my wife and I have a husband and I have five children who are all growing up and on their own do not have no home anymore but we do have two dogs we both are on disability and we live off $2,500 a month our rent is 800 a month so what we have left most of it goes towards food we budget and we live on calf as well we don't have credit cards we do not have a car we do not own a house we pay rent I do not have to pay insurance I don't have to pay car insurance those are the ways that we save money but we do not spend money stupidly as well we save on things like buying new clothes we go to thrift stores yard sales things like that just save money but I do not save on food because I'm a diabetic Sweat by the food that we need and that's where most of our money goes so thank you for the show it was pretty
This is half of us in American the man works for the fed government!! I'm a college graduate can't find job because you need experience working 2 jobs eating noodles why am I not in the news?she even got a pool!! I got no AC
The fact that this is a news story is crazy to me. Everyone should be like this not depending on borrowing and being In Debt. This is how I grew up. My mind was blown when I grew up and realized everyone has a credit card. This family might not have nice vacations and shiny new things but the are richer than anyone who is paying off a credit card.
I grew up on credit cards, there is nothing wrong with them if you manage your spending responsibly, people think credit cards are evil because they go into debt, the truth is impulsive buyers who don't know how to manage and then they screwed them selves over
We have credit cards and pay them off each month so we earn points without getting charged interest. If you have half a brain and spend wisely, credit cards are much better than cash.
I agree, I'm reading the comments and I see so much "credit evil, cash good" but seriously it's not that hard to manage a credit card, all you gotta do is watch you spending and be smart, plus the rewards you get for good credit can be beneficial in the future
Been cash only for a couple off years. It really works, my partner gets paid monthly, so we have shuffled our weekly bills and saved heaps. Also we do the cash en envelope system..
In alot of families, If you want to go to college, you make good grades and get scholarships....or you get a part time job and pay for it...Parents dont owe their kids a paid for college education, if they want it, they need to earn it.....
same here cash only! I do have debit card but it a prepaid one so I reload it as needed. mostly to pay bills or buy things cheaper online than in actual store! online shopping is cheaper now to me.
i love credit cards because i pay them off every month and i get cash rewards on top of it. if i couldn't control my spending then i would cut them up and use cash/debit only.
I do the similar thing. I thankfully have an ok job, and never collected credit card debt, but I would always impulse things and use my credit card and not think about it. I started using only cash to pay for food and stuff, and use my credit card if I only need something and can pay it off asap, but am not carrying enough cash on me.
I don't think credit cards are evil like some people here suggesting. They are helpful if u know how to use them .and u need credit to get a house .I don't think most here would have the cash upfront
I made it for 9 years living cash only. It's not always easy when there are car repairs and medical expenses but it proves that it can be done with planning.
Are you kidding me? They're doing a news report on this? Do you know how many people live like this? And this person has a lot more than most people. This is so stupid
without a credit card you'll never have credit...sounds like an amazing idea until you need to buy a car or get a loan for a house then your credit worthiness is crap...get a credit card and only use it for the essentials and pay for it with your bank account in full every month. same as cash but increases credit worthiness. Also credit cards have rewards you can cash in on like cash back & points.
yes but it's damn near impossible to raise your score in a short amount of time esp if you are asking for a lot of money also these "ways" almost involves some form of "credit" repayment like rent, or repaying student loans or taking out a loan and repaying it.
ive never had a credit card and my husband hasn't had one in YEARS. we were able to buy a home because we put down a decent down payment and our monthly payments were pretty low so we would always double up. its possible it just takes A WHILE lol
you said WE...they probably combined you and your spouses income to make a decision. this is for single people trying to use credit for anything w/out having a co-signer
Twenty years ago, I switched to cash only it's the best thing I ever did. I am debt free and have a very healthy savings. Plus I have managed to save one years worth of living expenses in case I quit get fired or hurt and can't work. My father said you are servant to whomever you owe money to.
This is an odd video to me. This is how most people live. I grew up this way and always thought it was normal. My mother never had credit cards. My husband and I do not have credit cards. I have always thought they were scams. I've survived for 33 years and there is nothing that I just have to have. At the end of the week if there is not much food left, its called crockpot stew. You just throw a bunch of stuff in there and call it a day! And vacation!? What the hell is that?? Never had one.
story of my life ever since uve been 18 ive been in charge of my 4 little brothers ... its so hard sometimes we dont even have food and we've been homeless before my mother is in prison, I'm 23 years old know and have a baby and am pregnant I'm still in charge of them .. but im happy my mom gets out in 2 weeks from today 😇

4400 repair bill just buy a new damn car already!!!
Bad choice for fixing a car 🚗 lmaoo. You could got new one. This shows the lack education for cars haha 😆 you was blinded robbed.
Yikes! Who spend that much on repairs? The car is more than likely not even worth that alone.
Aaaah cash get you bargain on any new car.
SocaMusicLova1 ew stop why are u writing s whole paragraph
Not a problem. Never had a credit card.....don't need one.
Kathy Leighton You may if you have a big issue or need to get anything online
Liz Mowrey ....I have my debit card and do just fine.

I paid off all my debt this past March, don't have a credit card and paying cash for my wedding in October! Its totally doable!
Congrats on your wedding 🎉❤️☀️😀
Good luck getting a house or loan without a high interest.
My marriage was cheap. We went to court, got married, and that was it. Parking was 16 dollars, the marriage certificate and license was about 40 dollars. Still happily married and don’t regret spending tens of thousands on a tradition that is ridiculously overpriced
I paid cash for my wedding TOO, no debt from that & it was so satisfying to hunt & get such great deals on everything!!!
Funny that I thought that most people live like that... I certainly do.
jula jula yeah I don’t know anyone who is in debt or even uses credit cards 😂
Yeah I don't know anyone lives like that either.
We are cash only. Thanks Dave Ramsey

We plan on doing this with our cars and we are done paying them off this summer! I am excited! That’s extra cash for us to save and use
rainepanda Agreed. I have a 2007 titan that works wonders. Hasn’t even turned the “check engine light” on

Twinkie You don't know where they live. Their public school might be shit. Regardless, if it's important to them, who are you to criticize?
Better than living in debt
Yes I can and yes I do and that’s what I’m teaching my kids! If you want something, you save up for it, PERIOD!
Why dont they have a savings, like to fix the air conditioner. They seem terrible with money
Someday I am going to be you.
XD but seriously This is extremely motivational
BlackWorldTraveler
Preach!
BlackWorldTraveler most people's take home pay is under 2000. if your bringing I. over 7000, you don't need credit cards
Try living on $800 a month...btw: better hope those "Roth IRAs" are still available by the time you need them...remember 2008...can happen again at anytime!
Reny Simone it could happen and most likely will happen, but when it does happen, don't sell at the bottom... Pretty simple really
Just realised we're a little different as we've always lived like this!
It’s normal to not be in debt? You can have debit cards and never get into debt. It’s common sense
I wish more people would live like this. I do, and it's great. I have all of my ducks in a row (Thank you God, my late husband and Suze Orman) and life is good :)
Nothing wrong with owning credit cards just don't be stupid with using them. It's that simple
I agree
I can’t believe this was a top story. People use CCs so much and finance everything that we had to make a news story about living within your means 😂
Good mom! Good discipline! Good children!
… I’m I living in the twilight zone. Your supposed to live within your means.
Use a credit card, but just only spend what you know you can pay at the end of the month. Then you will also get benifits
Regardless of benefits people will still most likely spend less using cash.
We do this too. (Thank you Dave Ramsey).
I know someone though that charges EVERYTHING on credit. yes, everything.
They don't pay things off and guess what, he's now filing bankruptcy
I’m 28 and have no debts... no credit cards.
You live beyond your means and stop at 1 child if you can’t afford to live!
Their house looks lower class not middle class
@Snow 123 probably they will one or 2 will rise above but not by much
how do u build credit without credit cards? as long as u pay it off every month. there are so many benefits with having a credit card.
Living cash only is indeed a step toward financial freedom. The family depicted here has certainly paid off their debts and live within their means. However, the next step for them is to live below their means and to invest the money leftover every month to build wealth.
An admirable way to live! Love it! Slowly getting there
I am just realizing I'm weird? My dad used all cash raising us and my entire eleven year marriage we have lived on cash. If people just use a credit card where are the boundaries? That is scary.
I would love to do this. I just really don't know where to start considering we have a fairly large credit card debt and are in what's considered low income. I've been trying harder to not use the credit card for buying things at Walmart, using cash as much as possible, but that isn't always possible because we do run out sometimes. Does any know of any programs to help with getting on the right track?
Dave Ramsey is on YT and has books.
I live cash only. Its one less stress in my life
This is pretty normal nowadays.
EllaBelle18
In Mexico everybody lives without cd
this is how I live also saving as much as a can and paying off my house early I live close to these people too cool
CASH ONLY TOO EXPENSIVE...I get paid to use CREDIT CARDS...airline miles and cash back and points for DECADES
Homeless live cash only!...
I love living cash only ! I don't live paycheck to paycheck like I used to with CC
Nice feeling hey
Credit card are only for emergency#
Been cash only for a couple off years. It really works, my partner gets paid monthly, so we have shuffled our weekly bills and saved heaps. Also we do the cash en envelope system..
Wait until the kids start thinking about going to college.
In alot of families, If you want to go to college, you make good grades and get scholarships....or you get a part time job and pay for it...Parents dont owe their kids a paid for college education, if they want it, they need to earn it.....
That’s pretty cool, I like the idea
same here cash only! I do have debit card but it a prepaid one so I reload it as needed. mostly to pay bills or buy things cheaper online than in actual store! online shopping is cheaper now to me.
Welp they need credit now because 2019 Federal Government workers aren’t getting pay😂
i love credit cards because i pay them off every month and i get cash rewards on top of it. if i couldn't control my spending then i would cut them up and use cash/debit only.
Exactly. There is a smart way to use a credit card.
I'm debt free. Is living on a debit card consider cash only living?
Are you kidding me? They're doing a news report on this? Do you know how many people live like this? And this person has a lot more than most people. This is so stupid
Eka The Anarchist well insider edition people all work in suits and ties and at desk not surprised if they use credit cards or debt it cards.
without a credit card you'll never have credit...sounds like an amazing idea until you need to buy a car or get a loan for a house then your credit worthiness is crap...get a credit card and only use it for the essentials and pay for it with your bank account in full every month. same as cash but increases credit worthiness. Also credit cards have rewards you can cash in on like cash back & points.
Moses Yang yes u can build credit without a credit card
yes but it's damn near impossible to raise your score in a short amount of time esp if you are asking for a lot of money also these "ways" almost involves some form of "credit" repayment like rent, or repaying student loans or taking out a loan and repaying it.
We pay off the credit card every month and make money on the deal. I agree.
ive never had a credit card and my husband hasn't had one in YEARS. we were able to buy a home because we put down a decent down payment and our monthly payments were pretty low so we would always double up. its possible it just takes A WHILE lol
you said WE...they probably combined you and your spouses income to make a decision. this is for single people trying to use credit for anything w/out having a co-signer
Twenty years ago, I switched to cash only it's the best thing I ever did. I am debt free and have a very healthy savings. Plus I have managed to save one years worth of living expenses in case I quit get fired or hurt and can't work. My father said you are servant to whomever you owe money to.
me and my family live cash only we don't own no credit cards at all or debt cards ..were doing just fine..
Hi Vee!
People make fun of me because i dont even own a debit card. Living Cash only is hard in a debit and credit card world!
So like, this story wouldn't need to exist if America had universal healthcare.
i still find it disgusting that in america you need to basically pay for someone to get the healthcare to live......
Been living cash-only for 6 years and it's great!
If every able-bodied American did this, we would be in good shape!
This is exactly how we live.. and Debt Free. Love It
The most middle class thing I've even seen lmao
I always use cash and it helps you realize how much you’re really spending
90% of Americans do not have a shred of fiscal responsibility.
No air conditioning? I don't even have a fan! I have to sleep on a semi-frozen blanket 😂 fml
Does anyone know how her daughter with leukemia is doing now?
Yeah I beat with the 3 weeks the government was shuntdown they really ran fast to the bank for money cuz her husband wasn't getting squat.
I know this is an old video. I sure as hell need to be more cash only but I'm not going to not get repairs or not buying my kids shoes.
My family does that too. We have been our whole life. It is not very hard.
Never had one.
sydney toburen Yes most people do live like this. So I don't know why they are making a big deal about it. It's the way things goes sometimes.
I've lived like this for over 20 years. It's normal for me and works just fine.
who else got momo in the video
bc idk if it’s part of the video or just me
story of my life ever since uve been 18 ive been in charge of my 4 little brothers ... its so hard sometimes we dont even have food and we've been homeless before my mother is in prison, I'm 23 years old know and have a baby and am pregnant I'm still in charge of them .. but im happy my mom gets out in 2 weeks from today 😇
If only our govt did this.
I only use cash I don't deal with any credit cards that way I don't go overbroad & good video. 😉☕☕
Smart women . We grew up without credit cards our. Mother did just fine
I never did credit cards. Only a debit card and cash.
