- Are you like me? A fan of adult animation who is desperate for the medium to explore more varied tones, genres, and styles of storytelling? Then you absolutely NEED to watch Fired on Mars. And I’m not just saying that because it’s a great new adult animated show that breaks the norms of adult animation, it also truly needs more support if we want to see the evolution of adult animation continue. Let’s talk about it.

Having HBO Max is the only reason I knew this show was going to premiere. It's like they want this show to fail.
Because they do
Not on my hbo max :(
reminiscent of what AMC did to Pantheon
Not hard to believe. Animation is pretty expensive
Then I bet it will be picked up by a smarter company
There simply needs to be some massive internal overhaul on how shows like this get pushed because there have been countless gems within the 2020s alone that died a quick death purely because the masses didn't get to hear about them. Like, I'd almost swear these higher ups were intentionally trying to keep the medium stigmatized.
Thanks so much for doing what needed to be done.
This. I haven't heard a peep about this show and it looks like something i would love. The same thing happened with Inside Job, I had never heard about it at all until this channel mentioned it, none of my friends heard about it either. When I finally found out about the series it was too late, it had already been cancelled....
It's because everyone was too busy hate watching Velma
Privacy is the only reason I know this show exists.
RIP Raised by Wolves
my opinion is that every US network only thinks adult animation is worth pursuing in the chances of producing the next south park or family guy in terms of low budget -> huge profit and aren't giving anything a chance if it won't seem to reach that standard.
I've watched all available episodes and went online finding barely a whisper about this series!! So glad you are covering this new, interesting arrival. Jax is absolutely a friend to Jeff. Not only is he holding cards but is brave enough to use them. Some of this has surely rubbed off on Jeff.
Jax's a straight up cutie he deserves to be taken care of the same way he treats his peeps 💝
This is the most underrated show of the century.
Agreed. "Fired On Mars" is a pleasant surprise in the adult animation department. Great show.
Could you explain the draw to me? i watched the first episode and felt like I could've stared at a wall for more enjoyment. It just seems so basic by the numbers guy down on h is luck after risky life choice goes bad set up. And with a voice acting cast that sounds like they're being paid federal minimum wage.
And the story is just sad and pathetic.
So, I will be honest. My initial viewpoint on the show's first 2 episodes was less than stellar. I had this impression of him being nothing but a loser, but there are some elements of a guy who is relatable in the sense of the world seemingly being against him at every turn, and even when he has nothing, there is still some spark/drive that keeps him going. This is by no means my favorite adult animated cartoon, i don't think its exceptionally great. But I do understand after being 4 episodes in what it offers, the reflection how life can really suck at times, but its about pushing through. Pursuing life no matter how bad it may truly get. Its not a show I think built for me in terms of how it goes about its writing, but I do see the appeal will probably stick it through to the end.
Forgot to add this, Jaxton is my favorite character
This is my feeling as well. I just wasn’t that impressed.
You are so right about the marketing of these shows. I had no idea this show existed. I just saw it pop up on the front page and decided to give it a watch. I’ve been enjoying it.
I watched all the episodes that are out in one sitting. The atmosphere, the tone, are so original and refreshing. Loving this show, can't wait for more.
Same
Also Tina Turner's - one of the living- from Beyond Thunderdome in the first episode is a perfect fit.
U wasted 8 episode of your time. what mysteries did learn? it seems like a wasted of time. and U want another season?! R U Okay?!?!!
@@God-T to me it didn't feel like a waste at all. I saw a great character arc, outstanding soundtrack and visuals, beautifully crafted critiques of capitalism and consumerism. Granted, though: I'm old. I feel like that helps for this show.
I’ve waiting for somebody to talk about this show!
Just watched all the episodes so far last night after your recommendation!
I really hope they get to finish it.
Went and watched this show after this video and I COULD NOT GET ENOUGH. Episodes felt like they were longer than real time but in the best way - really immersive story for me. The way everyone seems so disinterested and preoccupied with themselves but with realistic motivations kind of like the real world is a refreshing take.
I was really hoping you'd make a video highlighting this series. It's so amazing and exactly what adult animation needs, real adult storylines that don't need to remind you the show is for adults with overdone cursing or nudity
I dont think as many people realize that a shows success is almost entirely dependent on its marketing, this self fulfilling prophecy of "this show we didn't market at all isn't doing well? time to pull the plug!" has got to stop
@@verivik4500 or it could be that the show is mind numbingly boring, which admittedly might be what a lot like about it 😅
@@theendofthestart8179 Why do people like it? I'm trying so hard to sludge through its mind numbingly boringness, just hoping it'll get good... but it's just always this bad?
@@natepeters9359 dont know, I stopped half way through episode 4.
@@natepeters9359 I can understand what you mean because I thought that too at first, then I got invested in what happened to Jeff. It’s the character arc that finally got me. Now, Jeff’s just out there alone and I wanna know if its going to work, or if the universe screws him again.
Thank God someone is talking about this show!
I love this show. I love the way it escalates in every episode and takes not only their character development into focus but the music choices, still shots and culture of how Mars is segregated by working classes is seriously entertaining. I want this show to not only have a season 2 but shows like this to keep going. Killer writing and each episode has me guessing what will happen to Jeff and the people around him. I read in the credits that Carson Mell is involved and Im getting his style in some of the characters and dialogue which just makes it a bigger plus for me. I really liked his cartoon Tarantula despite not many people liking it but Fired On Mars is really stellar.
This show combines so many themes so seamlessly, I really hope this gets at least 4 seasons 🔥
Oohhh i Like that maybe each season could represent a transition in Jeff’s life and the live of everyone he’s met
Saw your reccommendation on Twitter the other week, gave the show a shot and I've loved the first 4 episodes! I genuinely can't wait to see how the rest of the show plays out! (You were also how I found out also how I found out about Pantheon which I loved!)
I like your profile picture
@@mothelysium Thanks!! I've had it for years and never felt compelled to change it haha
I'm glad I took your recommendation and avoided the spoilers for this show because "Fired on Mars" is an absolute treasure of an animated series and one that's been quite sobering to enjoy. Jeff is easily one of the most personally relatable protagonists I've ever connected with, and is, imo, excellent representation, even if unintentional. The show as whole is considerably grounded and has this beautifully humane element to it that I absolutely love since the characters all feel like fully fleshed out people rather than exaggerated caricatures. Even some of the more antagonistic characters feel understandable where you can imagine they're frustrations or where they may be misguided. It's so refreshing to watch an animated series where the characters just sort of bounce off one another in a realistic way, beautifully balanced out by the outlandish and quirky environment. This show has so much brewing potential and it definitely needs more love!
I watched this show randomly on a whim and its one of the best adult animated shows I’ve seen in a while
I don't want this to end up to be another Inside Job/Pantheon incident to happen again.
I also want Pantheon to come back.
I watched a few episodes because of this video, and its as you said, a mix of office space severance etc.
Super awkward and hard to watch at times with big endings.
I'm 4 episodes in and I'm hooked
Crazy that Luke Wilson is playing the same character he did in Idiocracy. Love this show to death.
I burned through it in two days, a fantastic series. A great adult animation that doesn't take the easy route of gross humor like so many family guy clones.
The show was really good. I hope it gets a season 2. Even doe I have no idea where would they go after that ending.
Took me a week to get through just 10 minutes of ep 1. Your review before spoilers has helped me decide to at least finish ep 1. Thank you for your time.
I'm watching it weekly and while some of the characters and its art style may not be my exact cup of tea, it is a refreshing change of pace in adult animation.
Also, it has a REALLY great sound design.
I like the art style. It reminds me more of animations in the 90's. And less like the Cal Arts stuff that looks hideous and is way too overused.
Man. is it bad that I relate to Jeff on such a personal level? I feel like as a struggling artists floundering from one job to the next, constantly overbooked and with an ever-shifting schedule I found this series really cathartic to watch. Like oh my god I'm not alone in what I've been going through.
I had no idea this existed until today. Watched the first 2 episodes and it’s amazing!
Before this video I hadn’t realized I never saw an actual ad for this show. I started watching because I saw a TikTok that said their friend made this show and and they really like it and want it to succeed. It’s insane how buried it was, but I’m glad it found an audience.
YESS!! Fired on mars is so good and deserves support, thank you for covering it!
Such a great show! Just happened upon it randomly but I binged it hard. Really hope it does well, would love to see what Jeff gets up to next season.
I put it on my watch list. However this video made me wonder if you saw "Little Demon", because that was one of my favorite recent adult animated shows that sadly flew under the radar of many people. Made by Danny De'Vito and his daughter, the show to me had a lot of the same appeals Inside Job had, which I know you like, like a similarly uique and quirky worldbuilding and character relaions, but in my opinion even better as there wheren't any side characters that I felt like wheren't explored enough (at least in the context of there only being one season).
Thank you for telling me about this new show. I recently paused my HBO Max subscription, so I had no idea. I'm starting my subscription up again right now. Thank you again.
At first I thought, meh, what's this? Some kind of "The office in space." Then I started watching the first episode. What I love is I wasn't "wow'd" at first with some kind of gimmick. The show won me over one moment at a time. It's a sign of well thought out storytelling. The world bulding is fantastic, and the story twist surprised even me, a veteran of adult animation over the last 3 decades. I sincerely hope this show does well, I'm invested in the story and characters now. I want to know how our adventure to Mars will end. Thanks for covering this excellent show.
I watched this video right up until the spoiler warning. Then I immediately went and watched the first 4 episodes and finished the video. Now to watch the next two. Thanks for the suggestion Johnny.
I just found this show last night scrolling on Max and binged all of it. I LOVE THIS SHOW and I need to see what happens next
I’m glad someone is trying to get people to watch this show, I’m surprised nobody has spoken about this show more. I’ve cried thinking about being in the main characters (I forgot his name) shoes.
I won’t go into details but yeah it was heartbreaking, it is expertly paced.
The montage of day and night is the best montage I've ever seen. Also one of the only somber montages I've ever seen. I love this show, and I've realised it's one of the few shows I've seen where "It was all a dream" actually could work and wouldn't annoy me like so many other times it's used.
I gotta say thanks for the suggestion, I saw "Fired in Mars" in passing while I was thumbing through HBO max and wrote it off initially. Now I'm 6 episodes in and looking forward for the next two episodes.
This show is truly a breath of fresh air. Also, I am surprised how this show even came to my youtube feed few weeks back but boy am i glad ! It feels so good to know there are people who like this genre, let alone promote it
Was looking for a new show, Thanks Johnny! Love the Thumbnail ;)
The series feels like the Drue Langlois and The Minute Hour animation type and that's incredible great 😀👍
Just watched half the video, because spoilers, but THANK YOU! not just the recommendation, but for the whole content you make. i really enjoy it.
Thank god you are talking about this, I love this show.
I showed this to a pal and they said "this isnt very funny" and I was like... THATS THE POINT.
When Johnny said it was technically a comedy I almost didn't watch it but when he said that it wasn't all jokes I decided to give it a shot. I love that an adult animated series doesn't do jokes only (even if some of the humor is uncomfortable and cringy) and that there's not a bunch of ranchy shit (sorry I like Archer but that style of humor and content is just hard for me to enjoy). I like that these characters are complex and relatable. I mean I dislike Jeff sometimes, but he's not a horrible person, he's just dense.
I clearly don't understand it... It's funny because it's not funny? It's interesting because it's boring..?
@@natepeters9359 It's funny when a situation is funny. Like naturally funny, not even really using "jokes". 5 people can watch this show and they will all find different things funny.
I was so quick to right it off but after episode 1, I’m hooked. It’s a pretty deep show. If you like futurama or king of the hill, I think you’ll find a little bit of both and something new in fired on mars.
So I trust your recommendations so much that I watched the show after just seeing the video title, and yeah, it's amazing, thank you so much! My favourite part is Jeff and Jaxton's bromance, and I'm definitely going to watch the rest of the season, I hope we find out what's up with those banana carts
thanks for the heads up, i’ll be checking it out.
crazy that this is one of the only videos on the platform talking about this show, it sucks how few people know about this amazing show. I hope it does not get forgotten and left behind
Had no idea this show existed, but will definitely go check it out!
Just been to watch the six episodes I can find it surprisingly good
Thank you for covering this! I watch HBO shows all the time and had never even seen this on HBO Max...
Just watched ep1 and am very intrigued!
YES I’m obsessed with this, the only person I know who’s watching it, and already dreading its impending cancellation while looking wildly forward to how this one season goes. Legit the writing feels like, fittingly, some proper HBO stuff.
6 episodes into the show and got hooked on the plot im all for it
Found the show based on your previous mention of it and while it wasn’t an immediate hit for me, it has dragged me further in with each episode. Excited to watch the next two later today.
My favorite cartoons were:batman, gargoyles, Simpsons, Futurama, and final space. I'll look into this. Thanks man.
I took a leap of faith on this one. Don't ask what crazy line of reasoning lead me to this, but I saw the title "I am BEGGING you to watch FIRED ON MARS" and didn't bother with the video. I just binged the entire series on Max. You have some credibility with me, so on the title alone I gave it a shot and LOVED IT. I still haven't watched your video (I guess I should now lol) but just know that I am really grateful for the suggestion.
The first episode made me cry, I just related so much to what Jeff was saying that it made me so sad I was fucking bawling my eyes out
I discovered this show completely by accident on a free cartoon site, because it was recently released and on recent releases tab, the scifi got me curious so I started watching without knowing what to expect and it blew me away. Discovering this show was such a happy accident
The trailer really intrigued me, I kept waiting to see Mike Judge's name on it. You sold me.
Not me about to binge 6 episodes of a cartoon I just heard of today via my favorite UA-camr.
Maybe I'll have to take notes and start that damn wiki
I have literally never heard of this show, thanks for putting it on my radar.
I don't know if its ironic of not but... I'd watch it if it was on television.
Streaming services has divided everything up in such a way that made me no longer want to pay for them, ill grab the odd month of a subscription to one every now and then if I really want to watch something new and have my fill and I wont renew.
All the old long running series I enjoy watching like, Seinfeld, House, Supernatural, It's Always Sunny ect... and all the great movies I've already seen I have already purchased on DVD & BlueRay, so those legacy things streaming service have to entice people has no effect on me.
Yeah the fact that most of these shows Johnny has recommended has been on AMC and HBO max, things EVERYONE outside the US can not access sucks 😬
Thanks for the recommendation! Yours are always spot on man!😊😊
I’m definitely going to check this out. The premise and art style alone has me hooked
I freakin love this show, glad you covered it. I’ll be looking forward to the 2 new episodes tonight.
Just finished it. This show is amazing and if it doesnt get a second season the fault is ENTIRELY on HBO's marketing team because this show is easily up there in terms of HBO originals
Remember not everyone has HBO Max and yet we have potential to get this to where somebody going to see this… takes time but it will get there when we get there.
Right now there should be people like me discovering what a gem of a corporate satire/sci-fi mashup this show is. Right now there are people finishing this show searching for a video of "Right Now" to comment on. Right now you should be doing a video on a deeper dive into this series. Right now I should be asleep in bed.
By the third episode I got hooked cause there is so much happening under the surface of the show, I thought it was just going to be a dumb show with no substance but it goes hard with all these background details that nobody brings up in the world of the show and just makes you want to learn more.
yes! i was hoping you'd do a video on this one. fired on mars is a strong contender for being my favorite new cartoon. its subdued sense of humor really clicks with me and i love the surreal not-so-distant corporate future setting. excited to see the next four episodes.
Love this show already. Reminds me a lot of office space in terms of the dry work humor; definitely see the similarities to severance too. the main character has that mid 2000-era Owen Wilson type of character that frustrates you while you feel bad for him at the same time. Jax is such a great character too, his intensity is hilarious next to Jeff who comes off like a pushover. I hope they really run with the story because with such a unique tone, there’s so many options for the story to go. Mundane work life on Mars sounds so ridiculous until shit gets real and the show reminds you that all it takes is one stupid mistake or angry reaction to put everyone at risk.
Thank you for shouting out the best animated show of 2023 so far!
I just finished it.I freaking loved it! It def reminded me of Idiocracy so much with Luke Wilson's mannerisms.
will check this out on your rec before nuking my MAX subscription
Thanks for the endorsement! I just finished episode eighth and really enjoyed it. I hope we get more.
Thank you for this video and for trying to give this show a fighting chance. Great work as always Johnny
i only stumbled upon this show by accident, browsing endlessly for more animation on hbomax. by the time i found it, the complete first season was up, so i blasted through it in a single night. it was insane how much it evoked this feeling of isolation, to the point where *i* felt alone. i thought it was a good show, albeit one that would freaked me the hell out if i had watched it high. then i watched the episode where they found the skeletons in the cave, and suddenly it was a GREAT show. even now, months after watching, i can never not think about the way those skeletons were branded on jeff's psyche, in his drawings (he improved his art!) and in the sudden death of his walking partner. jeff is irrevocably changed in that moment, as is my perception of him. if we get no season 2, i'll be satisfied knowing i saw something great regardless, but god, i hope we get a season 2.
I just finished this show today based on your recommendation and holy crap, I need this thing to gain steam. It's such a breath of fresh air with some of the most fun characters in an adult animated comedy.
There's a lot about this show that reminds me of Mike Judge's work, and I mean that in the best way. The art style gives me King of the Hill vibes, Jeff's actor Luke Wilson played the protagonist of Idiocracy, and the supporting cast includes familiar names like Pamela Adlon and Stephen Root. There might be some comparisons to Office Space too, but I haven't seen that recently enough to be sure.
But aside from the above actors, I can't find any clear connection between them. Maybe they were just heavily inspired by Judge.
I saw one ad for it and when I saw it was adult animation on HBO Max I assumed it was bad and just forgot about it. So thanks for letting me know!
Got a minute and a half into this and left to go catch up on this show, really love it so far
When you recommended Final Space i was HOOKED. Sad it went out the way it did. Gotta support this
I stumbled across Fired on Mars a couple weeks ago. I love this show! How is this the first channel to cover it?
Jeff reminds me the most of Michael Scott from the office. He is a constant train wreck that I can’t stop watching.
The only reason I watched, or even really heard about this show is because of this exact video. There's definitely a Darren behind the scenes holding the show back
Great show! Thanks for the suggestion.
You convinced me to watch Pantheon, and now this...
The art almost reminds me of that adult show with demons, supernatural creatures and a social worker.
I feel like at least five times each episode I'm saying "Jeff please don't do that why are you doing that" 🤣 Very good show
Not gonna lie this brought out my hallucinated anthropomorphic dog and my inner sad horse man
i started this video heard the premise left watched 6 episodes and came back just to hear your opinions on it i love this show thanks for putting me on
Today is Friday, May 5th 7:53 AM and I just got done binging this show
Id love a in depth video about the whole season now that its out!!
Started watching Fired On Mars BECAUSE of this video!!! I loved it!
few recommendations on UA-cam do I take more seriously than yours. i will be watching this tonight, thanks for the heads up!!
Literally never heard of this, but I’ll sure check it out now!!
Does anyone else notice the similarities between the show and the recent debacle going on at HBOMax? Like, think about it, the show is about a Graphic Designer just starting out in a big industry being immediately fired after a mass reorganization. To save face, the company takes a former employee out of a tank that our protagonist is put into. The tank in question "shelves" employees until the company decides what they want to do with them, which can take from months to years depending on how much the company values them. Speaking of value, very few of the other employees view Jeff as a valuable asset, and when he's "sold off" to another area of the organization, he still faces the same problems as the last place he works at and is given very little to work with because he is not the top priority of the company.
I haven't watched the whole show, but I've also heard other minute details sounding eerily similar to recent events, such as one of the bosses' decisions dictating the decision of other associates' opinions, and the ongoing plot of the underrepresented employees' resistance against Mars.ly being similar to that of the ongoing WGA strikes. BY pure coincidence, Fired on Mars has basically become an allegory not just for big businesses, but for the WBD merger and streaming in general. The terrible marketing could be because of the mentality of "New = not nostalgic = not profitable," though maybe someone at HBOMax noticed the similarities and is trying to have it buried beneath these new reboots and spin-offs they're shoving in your face (no offense to many of them, tho).
Either way, by not promoting the show and continuing to let the potential of many shelved shows that aren't profitable in their eyes rot, they're just making the show more of a reality than it already is.
Ok I'm in. Will give ita shot. Basically, this purgatory happened to one of my weird, wonderful one-season could-have-been faves called Out There
Grateful you mentioned the score.
Still pretty shocked that this was once a UA-cam short that got picked up by HBO max.
Honestly very entertaining take on the corporate hell cape.
