  • February 2022 marked 40 years since the Boeing 757 first took flight. The twinjet would go on to become a mainstay in narrowbody operations across the globe, with around half of all productions still active today.

This is simply one of the most iconic aircraft you will ever see in the skies. It's a beautiful elegant long narrow bird, still has the highest thrust to weight ratio of any modern airliner. Also played a pivotal role in pioneering the point to point travel model across the Atlantic, It'll be sad to see this one go, it's truly the last of the classics..

I flew on United's 757s many times in my youth. My parents would regularly send me to stay with my grandparents in Denver, so I ended up on the Seattle to Denver flight a lot. I remember that I also flew on the DC-10 at that time as well, although the 757 with its "rocket" takeoff was always my favorite. Back then the fleet consisted of the "Rainbow" theme and with the "Tulip" logo, as this was before the merger with Continental. Good times, good memories, a good airline back then.

757 development was about a year behind the 767. "A list" prima donna engineers were assigned the 767 design; we younger "B list" engineers worked the 757, learning from the 767 mistakes, resulting in a superior airplane.

I've flown on the 757 100s of times, while working for a subsidiary of Delta, NW, TWA, and AA. My job required 80% travel, and that I did. I even had the reservation system, where I could log in with a FA (Full Authority) log in. I could see all the flight details, flight loads, aircraft info, etc. When possible, I chose legs that had the 757. I loved sitting up front, BC, feeling the G Force during take off, and in the air. I asked a pilots, on occasion, what their favorite aircraft was to fly, and all said, the 757. I also asked why, and hey all said, because it handles, fly's like a race car. It's the only over powered commercial plane. I love the look of the plane too, especially when I'd see it turning into the gate. Always reminds me of a beautiful Hawk. The plane was also the right size. Not too big or too small. I have many wonderful memories of flying the 757-200 and 300

The 757 has to be one of the legendary aircrafts that Boeing has ever made in terms of it's performance, engineering and the routes airlines have launched with that aircraft. And the fact that it's still flying to this day is a blessing. Even at my home airport Dublin, United Airlines are currently operating flights to IAD, EWR and ORD all with the -200 variant and same as Icelandair to KEF. Hopefully, by Gods grace, I get a chance to fly on this aircraft for the first time before the remaining airlines like, Delta or United, start retiring them for the A321neos.

0:36 - The Eastern Boeing 757 looks so elegant.
My two most memorable experiences on a 757 was on Delta from Atlanta to New York where the plane were packed to the walls. There was no legroom between seats, and I’m average height.
My other experience was on a United 757 from New York to SFO. United served no food for the duration of the flight. That experience taught me to always bring a snack with me no matter who I fly with.

There were a couple times when landing on a cold night on 28L/R and a strong downslope wind coming down off the ridge, the pilot could not get the 757 to settle down on the runway and we had to go around. I'll be flying with Delta on a 757 in a couple months SEA-HNL. This will be the first and likely only time I will have the opportunity to fly the type as their are not any operators in my local area

You can watch and feel the Aircraft just lift off naturally whereas others look and feel like an effort.
I remember years ago when Pittsburgh was a USAir hub watching the planes land and take off in between each other. And to slow their speed but keep their spacing the 757 pilots would surf back and forth with ease 〰️.

Boeing should have used this platform to build the Max series of planes. None of that stability compensation software would have been needed.

The only 757 I have flown on in resent years, would be Jet2's fleet and they are noisy and uncomfortable to fly in I will be glad to see the back of them.

I heard the 757 was the replacement for the 727. It has truly been a workhorse for passenger and cargo service. I'm sure cargo companies will be looking into some of those retired 757s. I also heard they are very fuel efficient....

Actually not that fuel efficient in comparison to other options now, but it has traction in the cargo market since fuel efficiency isn't as keep given the relatively low utilization and cheap purchase price of used retiring passenger aircraft. Many have already been converted with many more to come.

I just LOVE the 757! It's quite hard to understand how they can not re make it. Seriously. Why can't you re-create it with today's technology?

As brilliant as it was in its day (still good), the 757 suffered one major flaw, its size, or more accurately the range of sizes.
There were two variants, both of which were able to satisfy the market demand well before any needed replacing. This eventually resulted in an empty order book, not because the aircraft was sub-standard, there were better or cheaper alternatives, or even because the sales team sucked, but simply because everyone who needed one already had one!
This is not the same for the 737/A320 where there is a significant replacement market, more than enough to see production continue from just those alone.
Take the A321, while originally just a longer variant in the A320 range, which had a steady demand, it is now the 'hot' size within the range - thanks in part to picking up sales from the 757 replacement market. No doubt, once those 757s have been replaced, the demand for A321s will shrink significantly until they in turn require replacing, however, unlike for the 757, there can be enough demand for different sized variants within the series to justify continuing production until the demand returns.

One of the last great aircraft produced by Boeing. It all went wrong after the 737NG. Everything beyond that point just didn’t do it for me. The 737 MAX? There’s a story there. The 777X? There’s a story there. The 757 truly was an iconic aircraft and very distinguishable from the rest. Always a pleasure to see and always a pleasure to maintain.

I'm fairly confident that we're soon going to see a modern version of this aircraft... perhaps a 757X or 757 Max. It's too good to be permanently put to pasture.

Boeing should redesigned the wing and reengined the 757 and clean-sheeted a replacement for the 737 instead of the MAX family. However, by the early 2000's management was committed to short term profits at all cost.
