    so glad to see these VWs still around. I owned 2 foxes in the late 90s. Loved them. Im currently looking at one as a project car.

      There are still quit a few Foxes around. Most of them are a long the East and West Coast. There are quit a few in Canada too. I bought this Fox in 1989 when I graduated from college. It has over 500,000 miles on it. There are some really clean Foxes on FaceBook and on VWVotex. Post some pictures when you get your project car. I look forward to seeing them.

    Mike, this is just fantastic. Still have my 89 which has very few modifications but it keeps passing inspection and starts up every damn time. As I’m sure you know, TT made that dual downpipe for a while which your friend fabricated for you. That, attached to a Dasher manifold is one of the few modifications that I have, in addition to the cat back exhaust in stainless, also from TT. My biggest problem has been rot at the bottom of the windshield but a little silicon and the puddles in the footwell are somewhat smaller! I’ll drive it till it croaks or, until my wife sets it on fire.
    Your FI to carburetor mod is brilliant. Amazing work all around. Thanks for posting this.

      Hi Christopher, that 's great you are a fellow Foxer! I love driving my little Fox. I'm lucky my wife likes it too. I live in South Texas so rust it not a big problem here. With that being said, I have driven my Fox coast to coast and border tot border to border. Back when the borders were open I when to Thunder Bay, Winnipeg and Calgary Canada just because I was up in near the area on the US side. I drove down to Puerto Lobos and San Felipe down along the Baja Mexico. The only states my Fox hasn't visited was Maine, Alaska and Hawaii. I even drove her down to Key West Florida. So with all that said because she's been through sand, salt water, mud, and snow I had seen a few little spots of surface rust but I treated them right away with Marine Gel. Aside from that all the paint is original.

      Mike N ....thanks for writing back. When I saw your mileage I thought it was a typo but now I get it! Mine is only at about 220k but yeah, the NY winters with the salt don’t help. The Fox is pretty much my beater car for trips to the dump and stuff like that at this point. But, I still love it! Keep driving your little beauty and thanks again. Chris R.

      @@christopherripley1326 Hi Christopher, yes she has over 500k miles on her but she runs like a champ. I' ve seen some Foxes in pretty rough shape but there still out on the road running around. There great little cars. Easy to work on and easy on gas. I have no problem jumping into my for for a 200+ mile trip. But in the state of Texas that will not even get you out of the state from where I live.LOL! It kill's me to see a Fox in a junk yard that has a perfectly good body and is there because someone didn't want to do a little mechanical work to get it going again. I hope you can keep you little Fox on the road as long as you can. I think it's great you have 220k+ miles on yours. Happy Foxxen' and stay safe!

    I am so impressed by this build. You’ve done so much! Ever thought about a 16v head swap? Also, your transmission holding up ok? I know they can be a weak point

    • @michaelnegrete6889
      @michaelnegrete6889 2 роки тому +1

      Hi Ryan, to answer you questions, yes I have thought of swapping to a 16v head, but I'm happy with the way it is running, so I'm going to stick with the head as is. As for the transmission its still the original. I have changed fluids regularly so I have not had a problem with it having over 500,000 plus miles on it. Although the shift linkage is getting a little sloppy. I need to rebuild the shifter tower. Last summer I replaced the shifter bushings and its still a bit sloppy. But what can you expect from a 32 year old car with a lot of miles on it.

    You running the stock valve springs with that cam?

    • @vw90fox
      @vw90fox  5 років тому

      Yes I'm running stock valve springs. The Cam use to be stock in the VW Caddy's from the late 70's early 80's models. But for the Jetta or Golf it was considered a Sports Cam. Anything beyond this Cam I would run stiffer Valve Springs.

    Do you have a build thread listed anywhere? Just bought a 1990 Fox and interested in the lighting upgrade you did, plus suspension changes.

      I don't have a list of items but here is a link to another video that I did that has some links to where I purchased parts from, ua-cam.com/video/x18lvm5c234/v-deo.html
      Also if you upgrade your lights you should consider doing what the audio guys call a "Big 3 Upgrade". This is upgrading the the wiring from the Alternator to the Battery (+), Battery (-) to chassis ground, and engine to chassis ground. It made a huge difference on my Fox.
      Here is the guy that I purchased a pre-assembled wire harness to upgrade my lights from seal beam to H4' s. Jay Brown

      Thank you for the insult. These cars ran 21 sec 1/4 miles stock which is slow by today's standards. At the time they build it was reasonable. I am merely working on improving the performance, but not trying to build a race car. With over 500,000 plus miles on this car on the original engine and transmission, I am not trying to abuse my car. They are fun little cars to drive. And I enjoy my car. What ever you drive I hope you enjoy it as much as people who own a VW Fox.

      When these were sold VW put a restrictor disc in the exhaust to keep them from outrunning the Golfs. They are light nimble cars with good rigid chassis that are loads of fun and have plenty of potential. This example is gorgeous, very nicely done Mike.
