    Whoever said Olympics tennis medal don't matters, look at how Del Potro and Djokovic reacted when they lost. That medal just worth as much as grand slams

      in a way much more obviously because it only comes around once in 4 yrs and is chance to get a medal for your country.
      Ironically any of the top players come from countries that traditionally don't do well in the medal tally and therefore would mean much more to them the idea of getting a gold medal than GB.
      Ironic then that Murray won it two Olympics in a row.
      Doubt he'll do it in 2020 though

    This match deserved a 5th set,DelPotro had an exausting semifinal vs Nadal but credit to Murray who tired him even more with his style of play. I'm a huge Federer fan and Murray might not have the best record in slam finals but to win 2 gold medals in 2 consecutive Olympics is one heck of achievement

      Yea but the rest in between matches is always different at the Olympics. A lot of the times you play the next day, or you may be playing doubles on the same day. In grandslam, you typically (unless something bizarre) get a day's rest and usually don't play doubles.

    big 4 at the olympics:
    Nadal-gold in singles and doubles "ok no surprise there"
    Federer-gold in doubles, silver in singles "really? figured he would've won in singles too"
    Djokovic-bronze in singles "no way he should at least have gotten silver"
    Murray-back to back singles gold "wait... WHAT?!!"

      He’ll be the one to watch out for this year as he’s playing in a home Olympics. Look at how Andy was inspired in London 2012 and Juan Martin was inspired here.

    A thought for Del Potro. He beat Djokovic for the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics ( Wimbledon ), and earned silver against Murray in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

    Del Potro tried. But you often have to beat 3 out of the big 4 to win these big tournaments. He slayed 2 of them, but Unfortunately for him, he ran into a peak Andy Murray.

      Gonzalez achieved the same as Del Potro has up until now. He was bronze in Athens 2004 and silver in Beijing 2008. Funny thing is he did get gold winning doubles with Massu in Athens 2004 so even though it's not the same discipline, he has all three.

    I would rather win an Olympic gold than a grand slam. A grand slam is the epitome of tennis, but a gold medal is an achievement for your whole country.

    I think this was harder for Andy than 2012 because he was on home ground then with 90% of the crowd backing him, but here was playing Juan Martin, a South American on South American soil. So it was like Del Potro's home Olympics.

      Del Potro at his best is scary good, shame about his injuries. His Wimbledon semi against Djokovic is one of my favourite matches and he was practically on one leg for most of it

    Dementieva, Massú, Mečíř and Rosset what do they all have in common? all won a gold medal... but never won a grand slam? Do we even remember them? No.
    Olympic Gold is a great honour... Davis Cup is a great honour... Masters1000 title is a great honour but none of that matters Grand Slams is what define you as a tennis player and what makes you great!!

    So interesting how the top players sometimes don’t do well in non-GS tournaments… maybe it has something to do with the Best of 3 in most non-GS tournaments?? But Olympics have been Best of 5 (no Roger, Rafa, Novak)… except Tokyo will only be Best of 3.

      In hindsight, Murray was the best player in the world for the last 6 months of 2016. Plus, Djokovic and Nadal both lost to Delpo, who could have been the best player in the world if it wasn’t for his injuries. So I don’t think that the top players performed poorly at all. It’s a similar story for the 2012 Olympics. Murray and Delpo are surprisingly underrated.
