What a great tutorial! I have two down bed pillows that are overstuffed, and I was already planning to take them outside to take feathers out, waiting for spring warmth and a still day with no wind. Your tub and plastic bag demonstrations are timely and very welcome! Now I don't have to wait till May to get started. Thanks!

Awesome technique I have played with down pillows several times in the past year, making them larger and making them smaller and having a huge mess of feathers everywhere in my sewing room, it’s crazy. I wish I had seen your technique first! Can you tell me what the finished size of your of your pillow cover and your down pillow are?

Thanks Julia! Hopefully you can make use of the technique in the future if you ever do more down pillows. The pillow and the form are 20" x 14" :). If you're a crocheter, the pattern is available on Ribblr (all proceeds are donated to Alzheimer's research): ribblr.com/pattern/kayla-pillow-tunisian

So have you ever transfered down without fearhers, from one case to another? I just tried and it was a huge mess. I couldnt grab the down without it flying all over. Its not like feathers which seem heavier and larger. The down is impossible to control. Do you have any suggestions. Please!!

I’ve only ever done this method with feathers, so I don’t honestly know. Down is so much lighter so
I can imagine it would get everywhere. Maybe try slipping the empty case over the full one and then push the down out as I did in the beginning of the video. Just substitute the second case for the plastic bag?

You might think feathers beat fiberfill but the abuse that is inflected on the geese over and over as they grow new feathers that are torn out like someone pulling out the hair from your head is horrendous. Please don’t support the abuse and murder for a pillow, or garments. There are great alternatives that don’t include fear, pain, and suffering.

I can understand the concern if we were using feathers from a source other than IKEA, however, we are specifically upcycling a particular IKEA pillow where the down and feather is either recycled or comes from fully traceable animals raised for meat production on farms and in slaughterhouses. We don't support abuse and no animals are being harmed.
