I watched a dozen videos on how to make a simple box cushion. This one is the best! You had me at no zipper. Your method to make a gusset is so simple and looks great!
I cannot thank you enough!! This is the easiest tutorial BY FAR I have ever watched. You are amazing! You make me want to make cushion covers all day long!!!! They scared me until I watched this, and I am a somewhat seasoned sewist. Thank you, Thank you!!!!
So much easier than many other methods, thank you! I used this for a 3” foam cushion and it worked great. I used Velcro to seal the flap, and I wish I had left less overlap, which would have made it a little easier to get the cushion in. Also, to make the fabric tight, I sized it down an inch in each direction which is a tip I saw in a different tutorial. Eg my cushion is 36” wide; since it is 3” high, the total width from side to side would be 36” + 1.5” + 1.5” = 39”. But I made mine one inch short so only 38” instead of 39”. Same thing for the depth, I reduced it by an inch. This makes it a little harder to get the cushion in but once it’s in, the cover is nice and tight with no extra fabric. I used a blackout curtain panel, it’s pretty thick and sturdy, and already hemmed so one less step.
By far the EASIEST way to make a box cushion! Thank you for this quick, simple tutorial. I watched several before landing on this one. I love that it doesn't require a zipper. The flap back is so cool! I just finished covers for the couch cushions in a vintage camper that my daughter and I purchased to make-over. We named her Milie and this was the last project. She is now complete. Thank you for sharing your skills!!
Thanks for the tutorial. You made it look so easy and it definitely was so much quicker without a zipper to contend with. Appreciate your efforts and expertise.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video! I have a wicker settee on the deck that I made a cushion cover for years ago. I am now making a new cover, and couldn't for the life of me remember how I did the corners. Turns out it was exactly how you did it. I found you after watching many videos that did not have the same technique, or even the same type of cushion, so again I say, THANK YOU!!
What a relief to find a simple and efficient way to understand making a bench cushion. Happy to have had this chance to learn and listen from a pleasant video🤗
I just used this tutorial to make 2 cushion covers for my daughter-in-law. She and my son bought a used camper that needed updating. She asked if I could help. I was so happy to find this tutorial. Easy to follow and the covers I made turned out beautifully. You were a life saver! Thank you so much!
I don't usually comment on videos but I just had to thank you so much for making this a do-able and fun project for me! Previous videos I watched were psyching me out and the project seemed unnecessarily difficult so you really made my day thank you!!
I have looked at quite a few cushion covers and I like your idea the best. Thank you!! I will be getting this cushion cover done easily with your tutorial.
Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I scoured UA-cam looking for an easy tutorial that was still strong enough to hold up for a long time. This was so easy to follow and turned out amazing. Thanks so much!
This is exactly what I've been looking for! I just finished mine and it's PERFECT... Thank you for sharing this and making it so understandable and easy! Seriously amazing! Thank you!
I just used your tutorial for a cushion on my outside couch - firm foam = 4" thick 72" long and 24" wide - thank you thank you I have never done this before and i got it - had to watch a lot of times for the corners but I got it .... I love it Can't wait to do the other cushion now !!!
So glad I found this! I'm a beginner sewer and I wanted to make a pillow for a bench we have. I have the foam, now I just need the fabric and this video boosted my confidence that I can do this!! Thank you!
Great tutorial! I was looking for a 'no zipper' option and was pleasantly surprised to find your pocket method. I also really like your idea of changing out the fabric for the seasons and tip to put down a grip pad to hold the cushion in place. Thanks!
Just what I was looking for! You saved my day, thanks. I’ve found other tutorials that included zippers and they were too fussy with instruction. This is perfect.
So simple and easy to follow. I love the idea of changing out the cushion cover and prints according to the season. And it's a great way to show case some of your photography.
oh my ! this video has got to be the VERY BEST. made it so easy to understand. i'm a new sub after checking your other videos out. thank you so much for you sharing your talent.
Thanks, your instructions was just perfect for what I'm trying to do! Loved that you took your time to explain in such detail. I'll be working with vinyl and hope it turns out as good as yours. LOL
Just used your tutorial to make a cover for a bench seat - it won’t win any prizes but I’m really chuffed with it!! Thanks for explaining everything - even this novice could follow it!
So helpful. I made a cover with this method a couple of years ago and am making another one today. Doable for a person with limited sewing skills- Me! Thank you!
Newbiee to sewing! Wasted material trying to make these for van conversion with other peoples tutorials. So disheartened until i came across this video. Just made my 1st cushion following this easy explained tutorial & it came out perfect!!!! Thank you for sharing xx
I am not a seamstress; have sewn only a few times. This tutorial was easy and the cushion I made for a Christmas gift turned out great! Couldn't be more pleased!!!
Thank you so much for your great video and instructions for making a bench cushion cover. I used your method to make a cushion for a friend's baby room. You method worked perfectly. Many many thanks. John Ellis, Aldie, Virginia
Thank you so much for this easy to follow tutorial .. so simple and effective! I've just covered a window seat cushion I've been talking about doing for years and it looks fantastic 🙂
Great instructional video! Thank you! The only thing I would add is if you are making a cover for a deeper / larger cushion, make sure that the overlapping fabric for the envelope opening is far enough away from bottom and top. Not sure if that makes sense, but I had a 4 inch think cushion and my overlapping fabric was probably only 4 inches away from the top and the bottom. So when I sewed across for the corners, I just barely missed sewing over the overlap. Probably having only 3 or 4 inches of overlapping fabric is probably sufficient. I had much more overlap.
cool idea, not to have to fuss with a zipper and complicated measuring! Going to give this a go with a cushion for the wagon for my grandson and a wooden rocker in my living room
After trying three other tutorials and becoming frustrated, we stumbled across this one, and let me say this is by far, the easiest tutorial to follow and the easiest corners ever to make...thank you
I am a novice when it comes to sewing. We had our foyer painted with a new color, and the plaid cushion cover on our shoe storage bench no longer matched. This step-by-step video tutorial was just what I needed to complete the project! Following these DIY instructions sure beats the custom cushion cover prices online! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this video tutorial. I made a set for my daughters widow seats that she had built for her breakfast room and they turned out fantastic. loved the easy method of making the boxed corners! I tried to post a picture of the finished product but it does not appear but it looks fabulous in that room. She had a party the next day and I have several orders for the covers and some pillows as well! Thank you again!
Fantastic tutorial! I’ve never made anything like this ever before but have just made a pallet sofa that I needed to make foam cushions for. This made it so easy and I even hand sewed it and it’s turned out amazing! Thank you!
I just finished making this bench cushion. The dimensions of my cushion : 47 1/2" L x 15" W x 2" D. I got 2 yds of fabric which worked out perfectly. I am a true beginner. I inherited my mom's old kenmore machine and all I have done so far is hem curtains. I looked at a lot of tutorials before selecting this one and I am so glad I did. This was the perfect first project for me. The directions were very clear and easy to follow. Thank you!
We have just built some modular storage in our child's bedroom and needed ideas for the seating area as it's not a standard size. This video is absolutely brilliant - I'm ok at sewing but not confident enough to do zips yet. Thank you!
This is just what I wanted. I'm stuck at home and can't get plywood for a back to staple. I don't want to mess with a zipper. This is so much better! I can change the cover as desired. I can't wait to get started. Thanks!
I have a wood dining bench that I would like to build a cushion for, but I don't know how to sew. I do have a brand new sewing machine and because of your very detailed video, I think I now have the courage to give it a go. Thank you.
Great video. This is a super easy method of making a cushion cover. I’m making one with a zipper on one of the long sides, so your video was very helpful. Thank you. Gail

Just the tutorial I needed for making a custom mattress for the cradle my dad made for my baby nearly 40 years ago. He made it without a pattern, and without a thought to standard mattress size, and I wouldn't have it any other way! I just made do with my own babies, but this new granddaughter coming next month gets a new, custom mattress, made by me!
A Thousand Words - Hello! I bought a bench very similar to the one you have. It came with a cushion that had a cover with a zipper and was dirty to boot! I threw the cover away and while redecorating my guest bedroom I found the perfect place for the bench. It will be perfect for guests to put their luggage on or change shoes, etc. I bought material and planned on making an “envelope” cover, but it would have been more complicated than what you just did. So changed my plans and made the cover today and I absolutely love how it turned out - thanks to your easy to follow tutorial! Thank you so much!
