Anytime you hear the organ in Black Mages songs, thats our boy Nobuo going nuts in a little square area surrounded by keyboards and an organ. Check him out in a live BM concert video sometime
Whole heartedly agree. I was so happy Nobuo was able to work with Ian Gillian from Deep Purple on the Blue Dragon soundtrack. "Eternity" sounds like the rockstar child of Highway Star and Burn, and I love every second of it.
The Black Mages renditions always add brand new segments to the original melodies at some point before eventually going back to the original and eventually killing it :p
I am very excited for an FFVIII reaction run! You picked a good point to start as well :D I spent many years with this Black Mages album near to top of my listening rotation.
I just wish they included the tribal percussions of the original. I feel that whenever new versions of things are made, percussions are the first to get the axe in composition changes.
Glad to hear you're going to be playing FFVIII. Kinda sad I didn't get to request the general boss theme and general battle theme before you started (also surprised no one requested them too), but I guess it's a good thing since you'll be hearing them a lot lol. Looking forward to your top songs list from FFVIII if you're going to be doing one.
This is, simply put, my favorite version of my favorite song. I got my first tattoo nearly fifteen years ago in tribute to FF8. You can definitely hear the Deep Purple influence in Uematsu's style here, specifically the organ solo. This is, in my opinion, the peak of FF soundtracks.
Besides the song feels like very Deep Purple-y with this organ, the title itself is a reference to the Deep Purple song "Maybe I'm a Leo". Also Uematsu worked together with Ian Gillan (the vocalist of Deep Purple) on a song in the RPG Blue Dragon, titled Eternity.
To be honest, I don't remember a lot of songs from from VIII other than the ones used in FFXIV, so listening to your reactions here is nice. And wow..."AdrianaChechik" as a recent subscriber. Niiiice. LOL
As a fellow huge fan of FF8, thanks for requesting this one! I definitely feel like we are in the minority among FF fanbases, but VIII is definitely a treasure in the series.
2nd time Jesse watching The Black Mages and both times he's said "Okay Black mages 😏" And now he realises why we've wanted him to listen to them for ages. More please!!
I agree, I play many games solely for the amazing soundtracks. And some games people shit on, may even be in my top 10 just because of the soundtrack. I think as long as the gameplay is at least "playable", a soundtrack can absolutely carry a game.
Oh man, Seymour's battle theme is sooo killer. I generally disliked the HD version's OST, but this was one of the exceptions, because the original is kinda muted and tame, which always kinda bothered me. And of course, the BM version fixed that problem with style.
I heard this song before college. So you can imagine how powerful this song was, I played it into my very first job interview, I kid you not. once I got called in. I had my hoody on. Didn't take it off - STILL GOT THE JOB!!!
the main organ section of this song always makes me think of Tekken 2 for some reason. As for more Black Mages stuff, maybe check out KURAYAMINOKUMO from ff3 and the final battle from ff5. Those are dope! SO is pretty much everything they do, but still! :D
I can relate so much, I've never played FF8 but I'm a huge fan for the same reason- the music! Still hoping someone requests The Black Mages version of JENOVA. 🙏
If you like more metal music, i recommend "Don't be afraid" from Dissidia Final Fantasy. AND God IN FIRE from Dissidia Final Fantasy. And Prince of Persia Warrior Within is just a treasure trove of sweeeeeet metal music. I think in particular you'd love Confrontation in the mechanical tower. Nothing gets your blood pumpin more.
I realize you're already into your playthrough, but there is an artist on YT named Enrico Deiana, and he has made the most incredible remakes of all of the FF tracks you've listened to, and more! Look him up! My all-time favorite from FF8 is "Compression of Time", especially his version.
If you listen through the whole album, you will notice very awesome nods to progressive classics like Rick Wakeman, Yes in general, to classical music, to rock music classics (deep purple etc.)... black mages is basically what young Nobuo had in mind when he made the music for FF and you can hear those influences in there. :)
God, this just makes me want Jesse to do a 4 hour stream listening to the three Black Mages albums back-to-back. And then do the same for The Primals ones (though I do prefer the in-game versions in FFXIV than the album ones).
FF8 is a fantastic game. Tune out any hate you hear. Just know going into it that enemies and bosses scale with you, and embrace the junction system early and often, and you'll love it. Music is amazing as well.
It's an interesting game with a decent, if a bit convoluted story, but the systems in the game are atrocious which makes the game top 3 worst FF games with only FF2 and FF13 ahead of it. That being said, it probably has the most amazing soundtrack out of all the games, or at least with the most bangers overall. And just to be clear for all the theorist out there, no! All your supposed theories have already been debunked by the creator of the game!
@@Brandunfriendlyman might need to agree to disagree on that one, but I can definitely see the junction and magic systems turning people off. Personally I love the way summons are handled, and I think, as long as you don't farm to get overpowered, the scaling bosses offer a real challenge that force you to junction well. And 13?? Love 13 lol. I think it gets a bad rap, that battle system is so clean (even better in 13-2). Agree on FF2 tho 😅
You gotta listen to "Force Your Way" and "The Man with the Machine Gun" from FFVIII and "Those Who Fight Further" and "J-E-N-O-V-A" from FFVII. First album was the best as there was less messing about with the original compositions while also still getting to add their midsection spins.
ua-cam.com/video/RdldFfsJc98/v-deo.html in case you want to see the Black Mages perform it live (from probably one of the best recordings of them live)
"Some people say I'm gonna hate it, some people say I'm gonna love it." I'm gonna go the middle road and say you're gonna have fun, and I believe that at the end, even if you end up not LOVING loving it, you'll be glad you played it. Like I said in one of my previous comments, it may not be the best Final Fantasy, but it's still *a* Final Fantasy and that's a damn fine line to start at. It's still an above-average JRPG, no question about that.
@@MrRusty103 Just watching the second VOD of Jesse's LP, and the game design flaw I'm identifying when I see him play is that FFVIII's learning curve is too steep. It dumps all the tutorials at you at once, and then expects you to go look in the menu to review them. The mechanics are fine, even the tutorials themselves are fine (although it would help if Jesse took a deep breath at the start of each one and actually read them properly), it's just that the game throws a bunch of stuff at you at once and expects you to swim right away.
FF8 is an acquired taste. Just don't get caught up drawing magic forever and trying to power game and you'll be fine. maybe mechanics spoiler?: Your magic stat determines draw chance and quantity, so drawing magic should be saved for when you get that stat high enough to pull 9 each time.
Final Fantasy VIII is... well, it's very divisive for a reason. On the one hand, the junction system is a very unique system based around the idea of equipping magic to your stats to give them a boost, the story was written well to the theme of young adults (still kids, really) being placed in an impossible position and rising above in spite of it all, and the music is easily among Uematsu's best work. On the other hand, the gameplay systems are simultaneously new player hostile and yet easily exploited once you learn the system, the story is poorly paced and filled with plot-irrelevant garbage, and very few (if any) of the characters are even remotely likable. Most are boring, and the characters who aren't boring are weapons-grade assholes (looking at you, Squall and Seifer). So, yeah, be prepared for a game that has interesting things about it, but ultimately is a poorly designed MESS of a game.
I played FF8 for the music and honestly it's one of the worst FF ever ^^'' The music, cutscenes and the final Bosses are the only redeemable quality of this game.
4:19 That there is the face of a VERY happy Uncle Jesse
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
"ooo shit!"

The live concerts are great because they really seem to be genuinely having the time of their lives.
Agreed. Nobuo performing music surrounded by synths is about the happiest any human has ever been. He becomes joy incarnate.
Not always. Mr. Fukui is also on the keyboard. The Black Mages had two keyboardists.
He even does live stream sessions occasionally
The organ section is full Deep Purple. If it bridged into Highway Star, nobody would have been surprised. Great song, great breakdown.
Whole heartedly agree. I was so happy Nobuo was able to work with Ian Gillian from Deep Purple on the Blue Dragon soundtrack. "Eternity" sounds like the rockstar child of Highway Star and Burn, and I love every second of it.

This and their version of Matoya's Cave and The Rocking Grounds are my favorites
Hell yeah more black mages..keep them coming dragonite
the solo part lol
I hope they use this version if they ever make a true remake of this game
To be honest, I don't remember a lot of songs from from VIII other than the ones used in FFXIV, so listening to your reactions here is nice. And wow..."AdrianaChechik" as a recent subscriber. Niiiice. LOL
The Black Mages never dissapoints! I love Uematsu's Rock side
Strong deep purple vibes
oh hey it's me, I hope you love the game as much as I do!
As a fellow huge fan of FF8, thanks for requesting this one! I definitely feel like we are in the minority among FF fanbases, but VIII is definitely a treasure in the series.
Keep them coming!
Black mages 🤘🤘 honestly such a fire album love their renditions
2nd time Jesse watching The Black Mages and both times he's said "Okay Black mages 😏"
And now he realises why we've wanted him to listen to them for ages. More please!!
I think by now (especially after Dancing Mad) we can call it a catchphrase of his. I'd buy some "Okay, Black Mages." merch.
Michio Okamiya is the name of the guitar player. One of his first arrangements was "Otherworld" from FFX
Actually, Tsuyoshi Sekito also plays on this track - he did the second solo. They're both awesome.
Matoya's Cave is a great Black Mages track!
I agree, I play many games solely for the amazing soundtracks. And some games people shit on, may even be in my top 10 just because of the soundtrack. I think as long as the gameplay is at least "playable", a soundtrack can absolutely carry a game.
I have good memories of being a kid listening to Black Mages and Dream Theater on my portable CD player
come to think of it I think this was the first time I got myself video game music (even if remixed) as something to listen to just by itself.
I had one of their albums and this and their rendition of Seymour’s Fight theme from FFX was so good!!
Oh man, Seymour's battle theme is sooo killer. I generally disliked the HD version's OST, but this was one of the exceptions, because the original is kinda muted and tame, which always kinda bothered me. And of course, the BM version fixed that problem with style.
Ya someone needs to request original then black mages
Maybe I'm Deep Purple.
I heard this song before college. So you can imagine how powerful this song was, I played it into my very first job interview, I kid you not. once I got called in. I had my hoody on. Didn't take it off - STILL GOT THE JOB!!!
The Black Mages absolutely slap, you should definitely look at more of their stuff.

The Black Mages at their finest.

Nice more Black mages!!!!

Always a treat when the guitar player has to ask what chord something is cause it's so out there :)
AYO ANOTHER BLACK MAGES VID? LETS GO
Literally just finished playing through 8 after watching you listen to The Extreme.
I'd forgotten how much of a Rage Against the Machine riff that is. It's a fun track for sure.

When I first heard this on the album I didn't recognise it either. Sounds way different.
Always give me deep purple vibes

I appreciate that another Dragonite profile asked for this
Song shreds
Do this have this on Spotify
I really hope you listen to some songs from FF9 as its some of the best in the series.
The black mages and their dark arts...
Yeah they ended it with a ROAR
F yeah
Check out toxic eternity maybe I’m a lion…trust me..
My favorite cover of this song.
"Some people say I'm gonna hate it, some people say I'm gonna love it."

No one gonna comment on the Adriannachechik sub?
best OST from Final fantasy saga and one of the best OST in the industry
Just add some guitar shredding and you'll have a Megadeth song lol
I love metal, but honestly I much prefer the original versions
Kind of agree. Each has their place, but I'm a sucker for drums and a dark, intimidating feel.
