#FFIX #NotAlone #Reaction
So watching this reaction had me a feeling a bit torn, because on one hand, I almost think it's a shame to hear this song for the first time out of context, because hearing it in game for the first time, in the scene where it plays, just hits so hard. On the other hand, seeing Jesse fall in love with this song so quickly, even with no context, was such a great thing to see. This song has managed to hit me hard in the feels every time I play though the game. Such a powerful song that is fitting for such a standout scene.
I really agree. I don't quite understand why he keeps spoiling the entire soundtrack before actually playing the game. Doesn't make much sense to me.
Idk i heard it so much cause i played theatrythm for like 550 hours as a kid lol but when i played ff9 finally and this song came on i cried so fucking hard man
@acac5340 It makes sense, but it's a shame sometimes. Him hearing Forgotten City theme for the first time during his FF7 stream was an awesome moment. He even has a little video on his channel just showing that part. Could've been the same during his FF9 playthrough for this song but now he's already heard it. Still, this reaction video is enjoyable too, so I'm also "torn" on it.
It's ok, it'll hit SO hard in game regardless of when he first hears it.
@acac Yeah, I agree it makes sense. It's the whole point of Jesse's channel after all- to listen and react to music from games he's never played. My original comment really just comes from being a passionate FFIX fan, so it's hard for me not to feel the way I do- that he won't get that "first time feeling" from both the song and scene together.
Zidane's depression
0:46 the feeling
1:01 the complaining
1:27 the pain
1:56 the struggle
Then the swell when Dagger comes in and knocks some sense into him, man it pulls on my heartstrings..!
We used the Distant Worlds version during our wedding procession. Both me and my wife couldn't think of a better song, both melodically and the meaning of the song. It was such a beautiful moment and after the ceremony a lot of guests asked where the song came from, several of them a bit shocked when they realized that it was from a video game.
Nobuo never fails to silverline the most emotional moment in a game with his best melody. That song is similar to Cosmos Canyon but the emotional kick is on steroid. I can't help but smell Ennio Morricone fragrance across all FF9 OST.
I have been listening to this song for over 2 decades and it still gives me tingles.
Played through again recently and I had to stop during this point just to appreciate it all, the power of the scene plus this music is beautiful
This song plays during probably the best moment out of ALL of the Final Fantasy games. God, so amazing...
@Phoenix fax
@flickerfaith last time I was playing FF9 I was in a bad place emotionally and the track starts playing. I wad bawling
@Phoenix Those onion-cutting moogles are at it again, aren't they?
Zeph you goddamn bozo, I knew I would find you here 😂
This song is always amazing for me though it hits with mixed feelings (blame depression) i go from likeing to sad then back to happy again 😁😢🙂😭😔🙂
One of the best things Uematsu has ever done. It can really hit you in the feels.
Just a ward of advice. Once you start playing FF9, listen to the title screen theme thoroughly before hitting your start button to start the game. That title theme is very important. AND then come back and listen to You Are Not Alone again. You should then be able to notice the connection between the title screen theme and this track, which may increase your appreciation of this piece of music.
Another reason to do so is to see every character’s emotional starting point and motivation
FFIX is my favorite game and will always be my childhood nostalgia. Seeing you react to this and giving it the recognition it deserves makes me very happy.
I replay it every 1 or 2 years mostly just to watch the story and listen to the music all over again. It truly is a masterpiece
Your ability to understand the emotion in this song is commendable and shows great empathy. I didn't have any role models growing up due to personal reasons, but I played a lot of videogames and those heroes became my role models when everyone around me fell short - in particular, Zidane. 'You don't need a reason to help people' - this was something that stuck with me. But like Zidane, this is a trap too easy to fall in to. Sometimes we need help - we're not alone, even if we wish we were, even if it's easier. Even if we struggle with our identity, our sense of place in our world, there is always someone out there that will appreciate who we are and although it's easier to turn them away thinking we are selfless, it's a greater kindness to let them in - and sometimes, we need to be kind to ourselves. We are not alone.
Zidane's motto always stuck with me my whole life too. I was alone a lot growing up because I was weird and a lot of kids didn't like me, and then as an adult I was alone due to hardship. I always come back to this game every couple years. I played my original PS1 version so much the disc burnt out (which I didn't even know could happen - there's like white polished burnishes on the discs lol). Thankfully the game is on steam which is where I'm playing it now, but as cheesy as it is, this game is always there for me, and I come back again and again.
"Through all the trials the party goes through, through all the hurt, all the times one of them was broken, Zidane was always there to lend a hand, cheer them up with a kind word or pick up the pieces and put hus friends back together. And then some broke HIM. And for that his friends descended upon the transgresor with the all the fury of a raging GOD!"
That' the vibe I get from this song. His friends arent just telling him that hes not alone. Theres also this rage at whoever would dare do that to him.
This part of the game hits hard and this song drags you down into it.
I don't think ff9s soundtrack misses. It's so bloody good.
Final Fantasy 9 was my first game, to this day almost 15 years later I haven't found a game that comes anywhere close to the experience. The story, music, characters, everything hit just right. This game will always have a special place in my heart.
The scene this plays in is so tear jerking. The track fits it perfectly.
This track is something special, completely magical. It might just be the best in all of Final Fantasy.
FF9 is Uematsu's best work and a culmination of decades of him honing his craft. You're Not Alone hits me in right in the emotions and I love it.
I had the pleasure to hear this song live at a Distand Worlds concert. One of the most intense moments ever. While you are listening to it with the audience, you really know "You are not alone" in the best way.
Hearing this at Distant Worlds Melbourne in 2019 definitely totally didn’t bring tears to my eyes.
I hope Distant Worlds comes back to Australia, but it appears like it won’t for a while…
I've been to two distant world concerts. This last one they played this song and it was absolutely amazing. I will continue to go to every distant world concert that comes my way.
Yes, me too!! Probably my best concert experience ever, I was really moved by the previous songs, they played so many great ones (Distant Worlds Coral in RAH, London 2022). In general I usually am moved by live music and get teary eyed, but the moment this one rolled in, I just started crying.
I got bloody goosebumps when the song reaches it's highest point. It really gives me the feeling of despair, loss, pain.
You're forgetting "hope", the song embodies the feeling of thinking you have to take on a challenge by yourself, but there are friends and loved ones who will help you through it, and coming to the realization of that fact.
"You're Not Alone" always gives me chills, enjoy getting to that part
FF9 is my favourite game, masterpiece of a soundtrack in a game
god, listening to this reminds me of the days as a kid when i would loop erutan's vocal cover of this song. i totally recommend giving it a listen after your playthrough too, since she uses spoilery clips during it. idk i just found it really neat to mention since it's a blast from the past.
The song starts solemn and pucks up more and more instruments kinda like you encounter more and more freinds
What's so cool about music is how it can translate into sounds our feelings, some of them are impossible to put into words yet you'll find songs that capture them so well. You're not Alone does exactly that for me. This never fails to put me in a great mood
I can safely say that this is a song I will never forget in my entire life. Instant goosebumps when I heard it for the first time 20 years ago.
yeah same it hit me hard , same as the first note of aeris theme on piano ....
And twenty years later, Final Fantasy struck again with another "You're Not Alone" moment in FFXIV. That series...
I remember seeing that quest name, getting excited, getting *more* excited when the music started, getting disappointed when it wasn't this, and then getting completely emotionally destroyed by the song that *did* play, and its context.
I never thought Uematsu would have a worthy successor, but Soken is it.
@@mort3308 Soken's name will be talked about just like Uematsu in the future.
@@mort3308 Really? I stayed disappointed, haha.
@@Arksimon2k FFXIV is at its best when it isn't wholesale lifting from the past titles. It's great to have little nods like the quest title but if they just tried to recreate the same emotional responses from FFIX it'd have felt a little cheap. I love FFIX. But I don't want to simply play a version of FFXIV that is a "best of" compilation of old FF's, even those I hold dear. What elevated FFXIV above all the previous games (to me) was how it took these decades of past ideas and made something new out of them.
Now I have two scenes from both games that stand on their own and resonate stronger as a result.
@@jjc101 Ok, but FF8 got a whole raid. FF4 got a whole expansion almost. I should say I quite liked the walk but the situation didn't live up to "Not Alone" in my opinion. Then the real reason I was disappointed was because a lot of the final moments asked too much suspension of disbelief.
Thank you! I'm so happy you love this one. This is a legendary track and my favourite from all of Final Fantasy, not just IX. I hope you don't read any of these comments for a while because the moment of this track is such an emotional ride, and I don't want you to get any spoilers. It's great on its own, but this music with the scene it goes with just elevates it beyond anything else in the game up to that point. I'm glad you pointed out that this one felt very 'different'. I think that's by design. This track uses a very different instrumentation from nearly every other track (aside from the synth). In the context of the moment it plays at, this uniqueness really helps it land.
Fun fact, Nobuo actually wrote this track before the scene was written into the game, but the developers knew straight away that this was something special and so they knew they had to put it at this one particular moment.
And to think, this song is going to hit him that much harder when he gets to THAT part of the game.
I stand by what I said in another video somewhere: You really could just sit back and listen to the entire FF8 and FF9 soundtracks all day and love every song. There are very few games which I consider to have flawless soundtracks and these two are on that short list.
I think there are many out there, but that doesn't make them any less special! Chrono Trigger, Nier are also good examples... FFVI also.
The way the music syncs up to the scene in game too...still get a little teary eyed 20 something years later.
I'm straight up bawling
The thing about this song.....is its about hope. I can't say more other than that....other than it makes sense in the game lol.
I have always said that 9 was Nobuo's favorite OST that he worked on and is his favorite....from 1-10.
While I have discrepancies....I do think 9 is a phenomenal OST.......I bought it on ITunes so many years ago and have since lost it (I HATE Digital media) but the whole OST is filled with bangers and I hope that people who have never heard his music can hear it....he is sooooo good and he does all types.....jazz, rock, pop, swing, electro....he is so good.
I tried to play this song on trumpet.....tried to learn it...that and "A place called home" and I got kinda close but am not a good musician.
The orchestrated version had a little bit of spaghetti western vibe imo. EDIT: I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who heard Ennio!
This is generally accepted as one of, if not THE, best song on the soundtrack. I like it better than Melodies of Life for sure.
"Feel My Blade" though
Since you have comments turned off on your VODs, I'll put this here. I've been playing IX with my kids in the last few weeks and it's so life-healing to be reliving this experience through their eyes and yours! It really is a much better FF than I remember.
Did the same a few months ago with my daughter. She was so excited and pulled into the story and went through all the emotion. I was so happy for her and for myself for being able to feel that again too in some way. Rare occurrence when you're an adult. Best wishes to your family.
The sad thing about this song is, it only appears twice during the game and one of them is the credits scene.
Which is the best thing about it. It only plays in THAT moment and never again, it gains weight and importance this way
@@andreainghilterra truly. You hear this track, you know we're all thinking of the same moment and crying the same tears.
I remember way before UA-cam and other ways to easily listen to video game music, I stayed in the room this plays forever and just listened.
My friend took it a step further and started his tape recorder.
This is one of a increasing number of songs that can bring me to tears.
This is my favorite soundtrack of all time. Glad it hits you that way too. So good. So grateful. A master of our time.
This is one of my favourite games of all time and this is by far my favourite track. The emotion that is piled into this song added with the context is insane. I recently had a loss in the family and listening to it now had me tearing up a bit. Great reaction.
I've replayed this game so many times just to play through this iconic scene to enjoy the waves of emotions from the music and the overall story. Such a wonderful piece.
I played FF9 as my first ever Final Fantasy game during my freshman year of high school, less than a year after it was released in America. The scene associated with this song, as well as just the song itself, has made it so that to this day I cannot listen to this song without crying. That's how emotional I get. I truly love this song from the bottom of my heart decades after I first heard it.
It's been so hard for me to recapture the feelings older titles in the FF series gave me. FFIX and FFXI in particular are just etched into my memory and cause so many random feelings.
There’s only one for me that will top this. “ Esto Gaza. “ Such a masterpiece and the standout track for me from Nobuo in FFIX. 👏 🙌
Thank you Jesse, listening to the OST version and the orchestrial back to back unveiled one of the very few truely happy memories from my childhood. I needed that.
Thank you
One of the best melodies in nobuo's huge litany of incredible melodies. This one really hits hard in the game. Seen it live too, breathtaking with the orchestra. I swear Nobuo's songs are not even so complex musically, but the melodies he writes are just magical.
I wish I could listen to this soundtrack for the first time again.
Context within the story. Is all I will say. I dont know wether I like melodies of life or this song more but yeah, it's a masterpiece
Thanks for reacting to my request Jesse!! It’s such a beautiful song and I just randomly happened to view that orchestral version one day! So many emotions swelling with the music, I’m glad you could just purely enjoy it for what it was ☺️ looking forward to seeing you get to that part of the game when you do!
Hearing this song after over two decades of my first playthrough of this game still gives me feels remembering the context and scene it's tied to. And first time hearing the orchestral version and I got legit chills and goosebumps. One of my favorite FF songs of all time.
Just made my 2 and half years old listen to this song after having told her the full ff9 story as a bedtime story now she asks for it on repeat :)
If I need to summarise this song and scene it is paired with... then this is what come to my mind: "When proudful knight say to petty thief: You are my companion... You know that... You are not alone."
It's my favourite song in FF9 and one of my all time favourite FF songs in general. The scene it takes place in is one of my all time favourite parts of storytelling and I hope he also feels for the scene too
This game was mature and good enough to do "the power of friendship" justice.
Thanks for covering my favorite song from the entire franchise. I can't wait til you make it to this part in the game it will just be epic and you get to feel what we all felt at that point in the story. This song always makes me think of myself and that I am not alone.
I hope for a day when this song gets into FF14 and given the Soken treatment. That would be a glorious day.
I personally hope they never touch it. I know Soken is a musical genius but some things should never be changed.
1:54 the exact MOMENT 15 year old me lost it back in 2000. Tears of joy at the moment this song represents for Zidane and the group. Thanks a bunch for giving me the emotional experience all over again, dude. Definitely earned the sub.
To think that ff6 and 10 are the only remaining entries for Jess before he finishes all the best FFs !! that's so cool. He litterlaly played my two out of four favorite series (ff, nier, MGS and Suikoden)
Except for FF16 when it comes out. And 14 which he will never play, which I understand, because it's really long.
FFIV is up there as well, it was the first one I played and finished, VI was my all time favorite for the longest time though but has recently been knocked out by XIV only because XIV referenced VI well enough to get me in with nostalgia, and now I can't hear "Answers" without getting emotional
At 2:00 when I saw your face and the gleam in your eyes I knew it hit you. Just wait till you see the scene that it comes with. When the guitar comes in I get chills every time.
May I suggest listening to a version where someone made lyrics to match? A user named Erutan did so. If you search that name and the song title it’s the first result. Absolutely lovely. ❤
this was always one of my fav songs in any final fantasy game
Ty dude! It made me so happy to watch this reaction. I knew the song before I got to play the game for the first time earlier this year and it's crazy how - and I was very similar there - how it hits right in the spot, even with no context. Truly a masterpiece and one of my fav now. Keep it up!
I looked around and didn't know where else to post this so you'd see it so here it goes among more Final Fantasy - I came across a video Uematsu put out a just few months ago that features revised FF bangers, original works, and intimate acoustic performances of Suteki Da Ne, Melodies of Life, and Kiss Me Goodbye. I heard he'd been having really serious health problems, but he looks vibrant here and seems to be taking a new show on the road to Europe this year 🖤 ua-cam.com/video/lkJks1kvQjc/v-deo.html
Learned this on guitar! Beautiful soundtrack.
This ost is easly one of the best OST in the videogame industry. Even if you dont know this game in particular or the saga in general.
That could be said about the series in general
You're Not Alone is like The song of FFIX. It was one I remember falling for within seconds too :D.
I hadn't heard the orchestral version before. It felt different but was beautiful too.
I swear the two have an utterly different feel to them. The original feels like you're passing through a horrific gauntlet, and the other's a welcome reassurance.
You will love the scene this song is played in in FF9. It's just... perfect.
This one always makes me cry when I see it live. Every single time
The moment this plays is so significant and tied to the theme. If you like it now I can guarantee you'll lose it when you get there.
I'm not a particularly musical person, at least in the sense that I can't usually articulate what I like/dislike about a song; but with this one I looooove how the tempo is just a touch slower than I feel it "should" be, and it just makes this feel like such a beautiful lamentation. I've not played FF9 so I don't know the context of the song.
It makes much, much more sense in context.
it hits you 10 times harder with context
That thumbnail encapsulates the in game moment perfectly, of course this would become your favourite Jesse haha, I seriously can't wait for you to reach this critical point, the "power of friendship" cliché was never represented with THIS level of feel and sentiment ❤️❤️❤️
This theme is very personal to me. I still hold onto this game in my PS1. Is a treasure to me.
Hey Jesse, Ive been following you for a while now, and Im so glad you've checked this out. I find it hard to listen to "Youre not alone" as it literally brings me to tears. Reminding me of people i love who are gone that were so important to me but they will always be with me, I am not alone.
This is one of the BEST songs in all of FFIX, i freaking love this song! I had it on my playlist on my ipod for years, I still do tbh I just haven't used it in years xD When that electric guitar comes in is just *chefs kiss*
I could listen to this song on loop for hours....
When that guitar hiiiiiitsss!!! My favorite final fantasy song of alllllll time man. So glad you enjoyed it
You know it's bussin' when the glasses come out, easily one of the most memorable moments in FF history.
Also, second video is legendary because of 9:03 that dude's enthusiasm and his Harry Potter spellcasting movement is unforgettable, lmao.
I don't even have words for this song, it's one of the tracks from the game that I occasionally listen to even years later just to hear it again, it's so good!
IX is a masterpiece of gaming charm...I love it so much!
I remember when I went through FF9 the first time and the events that were playing out during this song. This is probably the most emotional part of the game and there are a bunch of extremely emotional moments in the game. This one just felt way different when you consider everything that's gotten you to that point and the emotional weight of what the character this is centered around is dealing with.
If I need to cry, this is the song. 💚
I've been to two Final Fantasy concerts similar to Distant Worlds and it's one of the most amazing and emotional experiences to get to hear your favourite FF songs played by a symphony orchestra. 😭
The goosebumps I still get from this is insane, full body tingles, I love it. One of my favourite Final Fantasy songs.
One of the greatest Final Fantasy tracks, it really captures the spirit of the series in a way few single songs can.
"How many more layers are you going to add?" Yes. Now that you have played it, the layers make so much sense in the scene that it plays in.
This reaction was so pure. Made me smile a lot. I remember hearing this song for the first time when I played the game and I fell in love with it too. I played all the Final Fantasy games (up until X-2) when they came out. I was hooked mainly because of the music. Nobuo Uematsu is a treasure.
When you reach the part where you hear this song (and it's only played ONCE during your journey in this game), you understand why lots of FF players nominated this game as masterpiece / one of the best entry. This is pinnacle scene of FF9, when your main character learn the hard truth about his existence, and just when he felt so alone, his comrades never leave him and constantly supported him back... what a great game.
i miss that feeling in most game today, to be so moved by the story that the music will alway remind you of that. maybe spiritfarer in the recent one, but for FF ( beside 11 but that the mmo) nothing as strong after
Always thought that this song would be great background music for a motivational speech or something like that, and considering when it plays in the game, it’s very fitting
I've known of the quality of this piece for nearly a quarter of a century, and I have just noticed the progression of adding layers.
That Tour de Japon live version of this is just so fucking magical, infinitely both so sad and so inspiring.
Nobuo Uematsu may you LIVE FOREVER.
This moment in the game turned my stomach upside down 😢
I was waiting for you to review this one. I love this song. It comes out during the most emotional part of the game
Bro I dare you not to get teary eyed during this part of the game. If you hadn't fallen in love with the characters by this point you will by the end of it.
Ff9 was the pinacle of ff in psx, nobuo uematsu was fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love how you haven't heard an electrical guitar for the entire soundtrack, then this comes out to be the first one. It stands out from the other songs on the soundtrack by instrument choices alone.
One youtuber actually put lyrics to this song, and it is beautifully done.
Lost in darkest blue
Endless labyrinths weaving though
Will you stagger on,
with no star to light your way?
Share with me your tears
All your troubles and deepest fears
I remember when
you chased all my shadows away
Won't you take my hand?
Come away with me from this land
Let me give to you
all that you have given to me
Fly horizon bound
Find the moon behind darkening clouds
Even far apart,
know our souls together will be
When the storm draws nigh
Dreams will shatter before your eyes
Know that you're not alone
When the battle starts
I will comfort your restless heart
You'll know that you are home
When your stars stop shining
Endless vines around you winding
Know that you're not alone
I will give my all
So your tears will no longer fall
Down, down on sorrow's stone
Look into my eyes
All eternity you will find
In this fragile heart,
know that you will always belong
Shout into the night
Show the darkness that you will fight
Hopeless you may feel,
but inside I know you are strong
Keep me in your heart
So we'll never be far apart
Let the bonds of love
break these chains imprisoning you
Always you will find
Shadows lingering close behind
Lift your spirits now,
We shall be together soon
I think I know the youtuber you're referring to
I'm so glad you love this song, it's absolutely one of my faves.
Just hearing the music start reminds me of that scene that it plays in
Amazing song still gives me the chills
Amazing track for an amazing scene, and Jesse can hear the emotions clearly behind the piece. And I have to give a shout-out to Erutan for adding fantastic lyrics to this brilliancy from the great Nobou!
I hope I’m not the only one who started crying listening to this song again
Also my favorite Final Fantasy track. And the moment it relates to in game is so emotionally charged.
This one and Dark Messenger (also from 9) are 2 of my favorite FF songs.
I'm glad you love ff9 musics of Japanease video games!
I wept by you.
