  • Here's my tips for 3D printing optically clear parts. This is an effective technique for producing 3d printed clear lenses, canopies, etc.... Wipe your parts clean, DON'T WASH them, cure for 2 minutes and coat with clear coat. You can also sand with super fine grit papers and polish on buffing wheels but I wanted to share a quick and easy way to achieve these results in a single step.

EDIT: I found the clear is even BETTER if you spray them with 2k automotive clear. The results are astonishing.

Thank you SO much for being willing to share your knowledge! Most keep the slightest of secrets to themselves. We are not in a competition with our fellow enthusiasts. Your self confidence and realization reflects this. Thanks again.

Thanks for sharing, I can see lots of use from the method. Particularly with Jawa and Droid eyes.

Really useful, thanks for sharing. You can get clear cote aerosol with a UV filter to prevent future yellowing. Interesting about the sizing. This was an issue I had on my studio scale Slave 1.

Yes I tried dialing back the exposure on the clear resin to compensate but I ended up underexposing (according to the calibration tests I performed) so I compensated instead by printing a couple tests at 98-95-92 and 90% scale and the 95% was a perfect fit.

Whenever I see someone successfully doing something unconventional, I always wonder how did you figure it out, and how many tries did it take to get here? My usual ratio of good ideas to bad is about one out of 4 or 5. If I have fewer failures than that, I figure it's a great day!

Awesome, although I want to make some for some UVA lights to focus the beam, 405nm. So that won't work for avoiding the overcuring, lol.

Also don't use "rescale" what you want is the model surface to shrink/expand and that's done with Chitubox -> Settings -> Advanced -> Tolerance Compensation.

Thanks for that. That's a method I haven't tried yet. This is only one of dozens of projects I print on that particular printer. You'd have to go in and adjust the compensation for each project. For this I'd rather get in and get out without having to remember to readjust the settings. But I'll definitely do some experimenting with tolerance comp.

I thought 95% rescale is because you wanted to dip the piece into clear resin again before curing. For basic shapes without intricate detail it can give even better results.

on my particular machine that's dedicated to only printing clear parts (the Mars 2 Pro) it tends to oversize prints using this clear resin material just a tad. I sprayed on the INSIDE of the lenses just to give the entirety of the lens a little more clarity.
