Planning includes; deciding on the size of the garden; determining the types and varieties of vegetables to plant; selecting the garden location; how many raised beds; container garden; trellis garden and planning where, when, and how much of each vegetable to plant in the garden.

My husband was a logger here in NC all his life and his father before him. I love the way you refer to delimbing your trees as "shucking" them. That is too cool and you have the best burn pit I have ever seen!

@@HollisNancysHomestead you said 3 acres and I counted the folds of the paper. You'll have 2 folds per acre, I'll love to see the results. I'm new subscriber and still watching videos to play catch up. Currently I lost the land in divorce but looks like one of my boy's will get a part of what's not sold. I've sold the TH on the lake bc too much work to update it. Now I'm looking for land to start my homestead....
Yeah, the entire complex is up to about 5 acres now. LOL, seems like no matter what I do my garden is never big enough to suit me
I love your videos. You have shown me that container gardening is a doable thing. I live in Kansas with a yard that is full of Bermuda grass! And bindweed, and I refuse to let it win. I have worked for twenty years on this yard and lost the fight every year! So I am taking down my raised beds, because they are now full of bermuda grass, and using the concrete blocks to build up wooden beds that the bermuda cannot get into. I have a new roommate that is an older lady who loves to garden and she cannot bend over anymore, so it will all work out perfectly. You guys are wonderful people, thank you for sharing your lives with me and the rest of the world.

I am beyond thrilled for you both and for Bing Bing’s newfound freedom. He is also living the dream.
My 70 year old body has been offloading garden soil for our grow boxes from our pickup as well as shoveling a dump truck of delivered garden soil for a week now. We still have about 3 days of shoveling left to fill all of our new raised beds we built with corrugated metal roofing trimmed with 2x4s. The work is tiring but provides great satisfaction as you well know.
I love your way of thinking as you implement your dreams. As you end your videos with “by His hands”, I see YOUR hands and hearts working right along with Him

around 7:30, you talk about rejuvenating the soil. I'd love for you to one day put together a video on how you revive poor soil for in ground gardens. I'm in EastTN and our soil is nearly pure clay. I have a bunch of ideas and plans on how I'll turn my soil into good stuff, but I'm also interested in your methods. Cheers!
All the trees I am cutting down on my lot in Florida I am going to let that go to fertilizing the soil. You could pile logs into a trench and berm over that for a raised bed type garden. Those trees with leaves would slowly breakdown into a nice fertile garden bed. A Hugelkultur German type garden.

Wood chips in Florida is a problem with termites and fire ants. Better to burn it off

Mr. Hollis, are you considering taking in students at your new homestead? In 5 years, I plan to travel the world from one farm to the next learning from experts like yourself. My dream is to spend 3 years learning and then buying a small property to be my homestead.

Hollis & Nancy, seeing as you live near Gainsville, there is a wonderful resource right on your doorstep called The Southern Heritage Seed Collective in Gainesville.
They grow & collect seeds from all over and test them for optimal growing conditions in Florida. She's doing an amazing job and it is definitely worth a trip out there for your seeds, she's a PHD botanist and really knows her stuff. Watched her video on Pete Kaneris Green Dreams channel. Check it out if you get a chance.
So excited to see your soil amendments and mulching, watering and not to mention some shade trees or shrubs as our summers are brutal as you know. But if anyone can overcome our difficult growing conditions Hollis can! My herbs do well (not sage or lavender so much, too wet in summer), as long as they have some periods of shade. Peppers in the summer, garlic is tough to grow depending on variety, tomatoes good but heavy bugs in summer etc. But I definitely need to keep watching you guys for summer advice!! Winter is a different story and most everything grows here as long as the soil is good, but moles/voles can be problematic.
