    I am just hanging my first door (made my own wardrobe doors and fitted with soft close hinges previously) and realised that the loose leaf of the hinge is fixed to the door and the rigid side (solidly joined to the knuckle) of the hinge plate is fixed to the frame.
    Thank you for the demo; I was using the chisel with the angled side up and I noticed that you were using it face down. Also, the tip you showed, where you put a temp screw into the hinge when you were drawing around each hinge to ensure correct placement. Cheers!

    Thanks for this great video. For years I had misunderstood how to use a wood chisel. I had been using it upside down and thought it was for chipping away at wood. You show how to use the tool as a mini plane and use the beveled surface to control the depth and avoid gouging the wood.

    As an Investor for twenty or so years, I never paid close attention to placement of Door Hinges as I should. My Father was a 4th Generation Master Finished Carpenter. However, being the youngest of Six Boys, he wouldn't let me near a Hammer or Saw.
    So I have never had too many problems with how my Contractors or Builders hanging Doors properly.
    I did remember that visually, the Hinges as this Bloak demonstrated in the Video to make sure the Hinges are positioned tightly close to the Door Jam.
    So I recently hired a Handy Man to hang some Doors during a Renovation. 25 Years in Construction, I figured he sihouldn't have a problem doing the job right.
    This the reason, I wanted to readdress a proper way of positioning the Hinges. The Hinges became loose as the Screws did not appear to be tightly screwed in to the Door Jam. They were loose. This tells me that besides not placing the Hinges tightly next to the Door Jam, it also appears the Screws were over torqued which of course will cause the strip the Screw Holes of the threading that normally will properly hold the Screw in place. It's very important to watch for these details.
    This will prevent in my case to have to get a call a year or so later from a Tenant in a Rental Property to send a Handy Man out on a Service Call to fix a Door that won't close properly. The real old Houses that were built from the Turn of the Century to about the 1950's or 60's mostly have original Hinges in them unless the Renter or Home Owner abused the Door some how. Thank you Sir for your Video. Good One!

    Your hinge on the door is upside down. You have marked it initially the correct way around but then you have flipped the hinge the other way around and fixed it in the place. Usually the leaf of the hinge which has two prongs is placed on the door and the leaf with the three prongs of metal is placed on the frame. This is to prevent door sag or the hinges distorting over time as the door frame is what takes most of the strain of the door.

    • @shutinyanks
      @shutinyanks 6 років тому

      Those are rising ball bearing hinges he is using not standard butt hinges. Its not incorrect.

    • @actiongirl5
      @actiongirl5 6 років тому +4

      They are a standard ball bearing door hinge used in the video, a rising door hinge is somewhat different and is used to navigate changes in the height of flooring between rooms. Please feel free to Google what a rising hinge is because in the UK this is a standard ball bearing hinge used in this video. Yes it is each to there own but in my experience and many others a basic door hinge is still a basic door hinge not matter how you dress it up and if you want to maintain the stability of the door and do not want to have to redo the job in a few months time I personally would value some constructive criticism or tips. The installation method I use is the only way I hang doors and in my experience it one makes sense based on the laws of gravity and it is a no fail way of hanging doors providing you have the correct screws.
      If you have an opinion to share please use a new comment box because that is what they are there for and I think some people forget that.

      I think you are partially correct. Which way the door opens up affects the position. Also the pin head needs to face up, so you can’t just simply turn it the other way.

  • @z._axz

    Easier to fit hinges using a router. 18volts
    Riobi router. Very quick and easy, and also a excellent finish. And time saving. Each hinge, will only take a couple of minutes. And no risk of accidental damage to door.
    Sometimes the edge can get damaged.
    Also chisel has to be sharpened.
    Oak doors are hard to chisel. With a 18v router,
    The router drill bit, lasts a long time.
    Chisel has to be sharpened, after fitting a couple of Oak doors. Router definitely saves a lot of time. Also Router can be used to fit hinges to doors and frames. A 18volt Riobi router is about £75 I think. But with chisel this guy has done a beautifull job.
    Oak doors need 3 hinges on each door.
    That can take over 30 minutes to fit 3 hinges.
    Router wil take 10 minutes at the most.
    With no risk involved. And I’m not a chippy, but I would choose a router, to do the job and not chisels.. everybody has ther own way of doing.

  • @G4VRX
    @G4VRX 4 роки тому +13

    Rough job... the long side of the hinge on the door will be short of the cut out due to the radius of the hinge barrel .
    When chipping out the idea is a flat bed or when tightening up an irregular bed will bend and stress the hinge and prevent smooth operation. Here the hinge wasn’t even let in properly before you put the screws in . The right hand side in the video was raised , not flush with the door surface.
    This was a very amateur approach.
    Not mentioning what to do if the frame is warped or not square . 2 hinges hang easy , 3 or more , the hinge axis becomes critical or huge strains go into the door and frame wood even if the alignment is just slightly out .
    Here a really cheap nasty door is being used . As light as a feather by the look of it . Plain hinges rated 40 Kgs would be fine . The stainless hinges used here , with bearings in are for 120 Kg fire doors .So these hinges are a mismatch really .
    Most people only use a couple of screws per hinge to start with and “see how she hangs . Only then drill the other final holes if all is well ...
    Beautifully let in brass hinges on a hardwood door call for more care . The flat edge of the chisel should be towards the outside , otherwise the plunge cut won’t be square .
    Slot screws call for possibly a little bit of grease on them to help to screw them in .
    When all is hanging well , only finally put in the best screws with a top quality sharp screwdriver ...not to chew the head .... Suitable pilot holes should be drilled and an impact driver not used .
    There is a big risk of splitting the frame if pilots holes not carefully done , and when the door is kicked ... the door or frame is already split to “help “ the. kicker” ....

      Please can you tell me the proper way to hang a hinge... i have grade 7 hinges, they have writing on, one side has the brand name jedo the other is the fine print CE stuff. now the carpenter that fit the doors for me put the side with jedo brand name on the frame. but some doors open the other side which resulted in some of the hinge writing being upside down. is that right or should they all be placed so the writing is right way up?

    • @G4VRX
      @G4VRX 3 роки тому

      @@SuperChalkster Hello , some hinges have a pin running through them . This can be taken out and the door taken off the frame WITHOUT having to chew the screw heads with multiple insertions and removals. If so, that pin has to be knocked upwards to get it out, determining which way around the hinge must be must be .Upside down in theory the pin could just drop out and that would be wrong. Irrespective of which way around the writing is. Another determinant is that the leaf with the most structure involved in the hinge is traditionally attached to the frame (fractionally less weight for the hinge to carry ?) Another factor might be which orientation the rest of the hinges in the house are, simply to match. Otherwise the orientation of the writing on the hinge makes no difference to its performance. In your case its likely that you could wedge support the door and then set about turning them 180 degrees one at a time, The screw holes are often mirror images and thus can be reused in such a task.
      If you think about it a door can open hinged on the left or on the right. If there is writing on the hinge then one side will end up with upside down writing if the same mechanical considerations of the hinge is used irrespective of the side it is hinged. If the was definitely top/bottom polarity, the hinge supplier would alert you to the requirement.

      @@G4VRX i found out that its most to post, i do understand by looking at the hinge, its a grade 7 ball bearing hinge, in the case of this in some instances the lettering will be upside down... would it matter if i did reverse them so the lettering was the right way? i know it is silly and nobody would really ever notice this minor detail, but i am a decorator and i see these minor things, i see all the details as a finishing trade, i paint around them all for a living.

    helo sir firstly it is a good attempt at hinging a door but if you would have scribed round the hinge with a sharp stanley knife this would give a more detailed fit but be carefull how the grain runs also marked the depth off the hinge if you chisel flat side down from outwards in its much more neater job and please sharpen your pencil it is to thick this is the difference between being ok and not professional if a fire door 3 hinges need to be applied

    You are hanging a door into a new frame. Would of been good for you to explain how you got the door to size first plus that frame holds a strip not all frames will have that rebate. Also its not as simple as offering up the door and marking hinges to cut out you need to make sure the door has an even gap before marking out. Just a few things.
