A few corrections:
At 6:19 I should have remembered the context that he had told his grandfather he was going to get a sculpture in the museum three years after law school so perhaps he would have been patient enough to get the sculpture into the museum in a different scenario without the time constraint, however, he did start groaning about the paperwork before he knew about the time limit, and I can also point to the "istage an intervention" episode were he procrastinates building an important sculpture just to play a videogame, so it seems that maybe not patience but professional behavior is still clearly a shortcoming.
And at 8:14 I say "his technological marvels" while showing a pair of socks made by his associate "Socko" I should have put a clip of his jogging light helmet or light up sock cake instead

It's a perfect anime premise; Spencer is a young adult who never seemed to have a firm grasp on responsibility. He's lazy and not in education, but he has a wild imagination. One day he realizes he has strange abilities that instead of using for grandiose reasons, he channels these powers into art and facets of everyday life. There is also a loud female side character who has an affection for him of which he's unenthused about.

So I'm actually a prop designer myself, and I gotta give props (pun intended) to the people working this show. I personally work on theatre so I'm not as familiar with the realm of television, but if venture to guess that these people have very little time between receiving the script/prop list and getting everything together. I know that a lot of people make the assumption that big budget productions like this just buy stuff or have access to the biggest quality materials/expert craftsmen, but for the most part what actually happens behind the scenes is "ok so we need to have this thing, what thing can we use to make it? How close is it gonna be to the camera? Do we already have something we can use to transform to work for this?"
I know personally I have cut up pieces of foam to make French Fries (That's actually the same way the French Fries form 'When Harry Met Sally' were made, so I can only imagine the behind-the-scenes for all of these really specific and high-quality demanding pieces.

spencer was also smart as hell. they make jokes about him dropping out of law school after the first day of class, meaning he at least has a bachelors or two year degree, a high enough GPA to be accepted, and an impressive lsat score. he just decided to choose a profession he thought he’d truly enjoy which is admirable

I think that the difference is that a lot of modern art forces you to derive a deep meaning from it (even if there isn't one) in order for you to enjoy it while Spencer's pieces are just things he makes that look interesting in their own merits and allow you to not only question their meaning if you want to do so but also just look and appreciate it
I like to think Spencer does have a goal with his pieces, just not a very pretentious one: remind people not to take themselves too seriously, and embrace the lighter side of life sometimes.

I thought not. It's not a story the show would tell you. It's a staff legend. Spencer Shay was a Dark Lord of the Fire, so powerful and so wise he could use the Art to influence the womans to create life... He had such a knowledge of the art that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Art is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his sister everything he knew, then his sister killed him in his sleep. Ironic, he could save others from death, but not himself.
For what it's worth, if I had to headcanon a reason for Spencer's art to catch on fire, it's that he uses some kind of unstated material in them that's actually really flammable (I'd imagine some kind of paint, adhesive, or both). He either is ignorant of how flammable it is, or is too reckless to stop using it.
Oh god. This is very very possible. What if he uses paint with kerosene in it or something.
Though he also sets random stuff that isn't his art on fire, such as one of those little "ring for service" bells.
Maybe that substance is toxic and creates hallucinations, that's why when new people see his art for the first time they are amazed by it but the rest of the gang doesn't react the same way

If nothing else, Spencer's sculptures are definitely memorable - it's been at least 6 years since I last saw iCarly and I still remember in vivid detail some of his art, like the poodle sculpture, sniffmas tree, butter sculpture, yo-yo tree, bottle robot and sock cake.
Spencer's moan about having to do all the busy work to get his sculpture in the museum made me laugh out loud because I know exactly what he's going through. You wanna get your work out immediately once it's done but once it's finished, you're maybe only halfway done and months away from something being out publicly lol.

Art aside, I always found it interesting the pattern of nickelodeon shows and how successful their spin offs were. “All That” brought together a group of child actors who were on various shows. This gave rise to the Amanda show with Amanda Bynes as the star, with Drake Bell and Josh Peck as costars. Her costars went on to have their own show, with Miranda Cosgrove playing the sister and Jerry Trainor as the scary weird theater employee who showed up every now and then. These two went on to be the stars of iCarly. At the same time Victoria Justice had her own show going, Victorious. Following the end of both Victorious and iCarly, two supporting actresses from those shows went on to star in their own spin off Sam and Kat. No other channel to date has had a series of successful spins follow a constant flow for almost 3 decades

I didn’t expect to learn that Spencer is actually a firebender
His works honestly seem much more interesting that a lot of stuff I´ve seen in Contemporary Art museums. I mean, most of his sculptures were silly and naive and had no apparent meaning, but he proved several times that this was not due to a lack of skill, but a deliberate decision as part of what we wanted to express. We saw him several times being perfectly capable of making realistic sculptures and drawings very easily, and he seems to have mastered several different techniques. Maybe I think some of his works are kinda lame and boring, most of these are so because they are made as a joke to get a quick laugh from the audience, like the Merry Sniffmass tree, but others like the elephant head on a unicycle, the giant teeth and the Newton balls are something that if I had found on a museum I would consider interesting and unique, at least more than the average stuff that is there. So...yeah, I think he was mostly a good artists, but seem to be figuring out yet which vision did he have towards his work and what exactly he wanted to tell.

Spencer’s potential can be seen in many gifted children, where usually their innate talent puts them ahead of their peers for only so long. They have to have self-control to some extent to really make the most out of their gifts, but moderately of course.

Whenever I think of iCarly one of the first things I think of is the bottle robot. For me there was just something so iconic about the bottle robot that even years later I still remember it's eyes and the weird green tint of the bottles so I feel like just from that alone Spencer is a great artist.
I was not ready to question this years fucking later wow.

I dont mind the more niche or weird but some stuff considered art is absolutely disgusting imo. (Talking about stuff like painting with human waste as a medium) Not everything that can be art should be.
@Snoi Med pretty sure I've heard somewhere that the rich people who buy overpriced, low-effort art often donate it to museums to avoid paying taxes. don't take my word for it though because i haven't double checked this
@@mopsicool that's exactly what happens. Basically you buy a piece of art then hire an appraiser to declare the "value" of the piece, then you go and donate it to a museum and write off the price your appraiser declared on your taxes. So for instance you buy something worth 100k then your hired appraiser says it's worth 500k and you write off the 500k on your taxes as a donation.
Its from an Italian artist, Maurizio Cattelan who does satirical art. The whole point of "a banana taped to a wall" is that it's not supposed to be taken seriously, that its a stupid, ironic piece

You see that big ass apartment? Monetarily he was not struggling that's for sure. I think he was famous if not for his own merit by the merit of the highly viewed showed from his sister. Either way he was known somehow.
