This was very well done for a small channel. Quality content
uh oh, I was looking at that exact same platform, on that exact same ebay listing to perhaps buy it for my new gaming pc. Was thinking of pairing it with an rx 6950 xt, glad I chose an xeon instead.
Hey man - Awesome Video! Just when I thought no one would cover G34 out comes this gem of a video.
As for your dual channel issue, I actually have your exact motherboard, but running a much rarer, pre-production version of your CPU that is unlocked (But otherwise the exact same). In my case I actually had the same dual channel issue as you and at the same time, my GPU would only run at 8x lane width.
What fixed this for me was tweaking the cooler mounting pressure. I can only assume the cooler was putting too much stress downwards on the chip and causing a bad contact. When I loosened my cooler off, not only did I gain all 4 memory channels. I was also able to achieve 16x lane width on my GPU. I highly encourage you give it a go and see if it helps you any. Just make sure not to loosen it too much or you might end up with not enough mounting pressure for the chip to cool effectively.
Hope this works for you. And +1 sub to your channel from me :)
There's no way I'd expect cooler mounting to be a probable cause, but I'll have to try it out - the board does support it after all
Thanks for your thoughts :)
Yes the server chips all have to be screwed down a specific way or contact won’t be good. I’m pretty sure the max this board supports is 8.0 pcie 2.0 though. I don’t have anything in my first slot, been saving it for an m.2 drive. I do have a sas card and a 10Gb Intel t520 nic in the other pcie slots. The on board sata is sadly limited to sata 2 speeds. I wouldn’t recommend anyone buy this setup for their home use. The previous version of AMD opteron cpu probably runs faster than the 6380. The only good thing about about this opteron is that it has a newer instruction set that’s closer to a modern cpu. I bought it because of the ecc ram and it was even cheaper than the price you paid.
liked and subs ! I liked the overall quality were this subject niche can really be appreciated. Thanks
These CPUs are made from two PIledriver dies glued together with HyperTransport. So while calling itself quad-channel, it's probably more accurate to say that it is two dual-channel, since each individual die has only a dual channel memory controller.
It's probably not the case for this particular motherboard, but occasionally these types of motherboards are made with all the memory slots connected to the same die. In that case, only dual channel is possible. In your case, the other comment about uneven CPU pressure is probably correct.
Even without direct memory access, the other die can perform memory operations by communicating with the other die's memory controller over the internal HyperTransport interconnect. It's pretty fast, but nowhere near as fast as direct memory access. So, memory operations on that die will take a hit to both latency and throughput.
Nice video! 👌
Nice video! tell us when you find a proper budget king!
These puppies only start becoming fun once you have 4 of them in a single system.
i recommend ocng5 for this supermicro board- you can overclock the cpu(a little) and run the memory at xmp profiles. also, run the cpu with CMT turned off(one core per module) in the bios when gaming.
I should think DDR3 Quad Channel Memory kits are extremely rare, since the normal consumer platforms of the DDR3 ERA where Dual Channel and at best Triple Channel, X58 LGA 1366 being one example of a Triple Channel Platform.
You should run mprime or prime64 on it and compare. Very curious how it performs looking for primes. My i5-11600k isn't that much faster then a i5-3470 at solving. It's all about core count
Please make a part 2. I'm gonna make the same build with 6386se processor highest end for this socket 🎉
I'm surprised that the Industry didn't shit on AMD for the shared FPU's between cores in this processor line
Can you oc this cpu?
Good video, but just to know, you bought it because of curiosity or you needed to render videos faster?
It's definitely curiosity, the Bulldozer architecture, plus having a server board are fascinating
A 2600X can render 60% faster, but then my room stays cold
Nice review. I like the older tech in modern times. Xeon is much better though.I have a dual xeon board has 6 channels memory and can game well. Just higher wattage. I use a 5950x/3070ti main system.
I'll be looking for a cheap Xeon platform in the future
When's bro gonna come back
I have this board, cpu and the dynatron cooler. I have 128GB of ecc ram in it, all slots loaded. It’s a home server, has a few quirks but for the most part is actually pretty fast when running as a server. I’ve not tried to run windows on it. I’d like to add, the opteron discussed here was not built to be have a fast fpu. It has double the integer for every single fpu unit.
Running this cpu in just dual channel didn’t do it much justice. Why does every review not run it with all channels of memory?
Another thing, to add. The board is limited to 8 lanes of pcie 2.0 on its first slot, each slot after has less lanes available.
If anyone has a benchmark I can boot from an iso, I’ll run it on my server and provide the results with all channels of memory available. Let me know.
