I am a huge fan of Neural DSP plugins, and have spent way too much money on them, but I tried out the Line 6 Metallurgy series and as soon as my trials were up, I bought them. I can't lie, I probably use the Line 6 Modern more than any of my Neural products. For $200, you get all three of the Metallurgy plugins and it's definitely worth it. I've been a Line 6 Helix user for a few years and I have plenty of real amps, but I almost exclusively (probably 95% of the time) use plugins now. I'm no gear tweaker and I don't spend hours messing around with dialing in "perfect" tones; I'm more inclined to find a great preset and modify as needed, and these plugins are great for that. While Line 6 won't replace Neural DSP entirely, especially when it comes to non-metal tones, these are great plugins.
I got the trials, tried them for like 20 minutes, then let them expire. Comes nowhere close to Neural DSP. It's not just the tone, it's the way the amp sim feels and responds to your playing. That said, Neural does sound better IMO.
@@KeepTheGates I'm sure they're not for everyone. Maybe if you had spent more time with them, you could have found you enjoyed them more. We'll never know. I will say, no other plugin I know of comes anywhere close to the Neural DSP Archetype: Petrucci. 🤌🏼

I've only recently started using Neural DSP for recording guitars. I still use POD Farm for recording bass parts or for practicing as I find it easy to replicate my real DSL100 with it.
For me the best Line 6 plugin is Helix Native, I’ve tried Neural DSP, Mercuriall and many other stuff, but the most convenient, tweakable and good sounding still Helix Native
Line 6 probably has the most dramatic redemption arc in all of guitar gear. Hats off to them for going from everyone's punching bag to one of the top dogs in guitar tone.
I don't agree with that sentiment. I used to play in a band where the other guitarist used a Line 6 Pod XT Live floorboard and I was blown away by the quality of the sounds. It was just a shame the Spider is all anyone remembers. Also some great higher end Line 6 amps like the HD147 and the Vetta HD from back in the day.
they never were the punching bag lol. people just didn't know what they were doing, and people remember sounding like shit when they were beginners with their spiders. some of the most revered modern metal tones are pod/pod x3/pod XT, like meshuggah, animals as leaders, monuments, and periphery.
Line 6 definitely WAS a joke of the industry. They may not be now but anyone who says otherwise didn't spend much time actually working in the industry. They were a meme used by bedroom rockstars and cover bands.
They actually do sound really good. If you use the internal IR loader you can take advantage of the plugin's excellent room IRs together with your own IRs.
they sound pretty good, but for $100 USD or more, i think ill be sticking with neural dsp, just better for the same price range in my meaningless opinion
I went back and used my old Pod Studio UX2 the other day on a laptop in the bedroom and I have to say that the treadplate emulation they have in Pod Farm is actually pretty good and still holds up today! Im not sure $199 is justifiable but its at least comparable to the Neural DSP plugins
I actually thought this sounded really good even with some of the stock cabs, though I do like brighter tones and bassy ones not so much. And this did sound "bright" and not "nasty" which is a big plus.
Agree. The Line 6 cabs seem to leave room for the bass and low end from the drums. Ola's seems to have a lot of "wind noise" or something in the low end.
The Metallurgy is as good as Neural DSP nameless suite or any other, those two are the best I think, it's just what I like and I've tried every other ones on the market too.
Ola GREAT and great Thanks. Please make also a video about everything in connection with IRs. How to incorporate them in your Guitar Plug In/DAW. How do IR Players work. Where to get a player at a reasonable price. I know you once had short vid about IR, but for newbies in this field like me it is still something to learn about. And you are still the most competent guy out there in this whole universe to explain it to total nerds.🤘THX a lot
Hey, Ola. For the record. I love this video. Believe that if we hung out it would be magical. Dude, you playing Welcome Home brought back memories from like, I dunno, ‘96? 97? In my room with the tab book, feeling like a champ being able to play the riff, and at the same time, pulling myself together cuz I’m playing a Metallica riff! 🍻
Ola - "eh, it's sounds pretty good" - his tone tells you everything. Nothing really excites him here. I understand why. L6 has always struggled with cabs for some reason. You should test it with a 7 or 8 string. I really find the Helix plug in falls apart when I get low. Switched to Amplitube and it's night and day better. Even IR's couldn't clean up the bottom end of the HX stuff.
The dynamic low-pass filter in the noise gate is pretty smart. I still feel that Helix Native is the better product, but Metallurgy can be a good choice for people who don't care about having hundreds of different amps and pedals and rather have a easier signal chain. However, I can't for the life of me understand how the bug that makes every Line 6 software unusable when there is a portable drive, USB-drive or SD-card connected. It has prevented me (and probably many others) from buying both Helix Native and Ampeg SVT Suite, simply because I can't have any form of external drive, USB-stick, my phone or SD-card connected if I want to use their software. This bug has been prevalent in all of their software for at least 10 years and it doesn't seem like they are even trying to fix it.
I actually don't suffer that problem anymore. I really wish I knew what causes it, because I have had it in the past. I can run Line6 and the Ampeg plugin problem free now.
@@trevorphilips9484 I thought it was the "no disk nr 0" problem, but it seems like that's a separate issue.
