I am no tech but using vaseline, fluid film or something in there to prevent rust vs. relying on the rubber cap is a smart move IMO.

I just know someone’s gunna flip a lid, but in my experience with these calipers, this is what works….

Looks like a tight spot on the truck! Next time, try taking an old 10mm Allen wrench and grind down a section about 3/4 to 1 inch long, place it in the end of the bolt and then use a ratcheting 10mm wrench to tighten it up!!! If it works, put it up for next time.
Great idea using the Vaseline by the way......

That’s a good idea! The only 10mm I could find was my snap on, and my icon and I was like…. “It’s so tempting….” Of course in the “chinesium box there was nothin 10mm lol

@shiftwrenchrepeat sounds like you need to buy a Pittsburgh donor set next time you're at Harbor Freight!!!
A 3/8 might work just to run it in as long as you didn't have to use much torque.

Ive never had an issue with these brakes and ive worked on alot of these but your right these do get corroded even with the caps on but i alway out wheel bearing grease but i imagine vaseline works just as good

I’ve seen two now in the last few months that I had to do calipers on… silly thay they put the slider in the caliper itself instead of the bracket side

Do what works! That being said the rubber near the brakes is usually brake fluid resistant, and not good for petroleum products. I used to see swollen water leaking bellows on calipers that had been lubed with grease where the ones lubed with glycol based or silicone based greases seldom leaked. Maybe Vasoline isn't too reactive with brake rubber.
Back in the 80's we never used to see the corrosion on the swept surface on the inside of the rotor. I've heard it referred to as intergranular corrosion. Now we see it all the time even on OE rotors. Sometimes there's pockets of rust under under the perfect looking swept surface. Any thoughts on what causes this? I've done so many brake jobs because of this even when the pads had plenty of life left.

Thanks! Yeah the boots and actual face of the slider you should use a good brake grease. Vaseline just to keep moisture out.
Regarding the rusty rotors…. I honestly don’t have an exact answer but my speculation is that it’s just the poor quality of metals used now…. On my personal rigs I always use the coated rotors from power stop and they seem to hold up a bit better to corrosion
