Thank you for sharing the old and historical side of Salvador, my hometown. Bossa Nova was born in Pelourinho, São Francisco Church, 1:45, is the richest Brazilian Church. It has 800 kg of gold on its walls. The orange/pink building, 5:05, is the oldest Faculty of Medicine in Brazil. The blue building, 2:45, is a museum, The House of Jorge Amado, one of the most famous Brazilian writers. The slave market in Salvador was exactly where the Mercado Modelo is. Avoid the Mercado Modelo restaurant, it's too expensive. There is a great restaurant on the left side where Jorge Amado museum is. They have a wide and good range of food from Bahia. Also, all Malls have great buffet restaurants. Have fun in Salvador, people are very friendly. Greetings from London.

      Thanks Josue.
I'm travelling from London to Salvador next week. What would you say is the best island to visit for a day at the beach? Also which local non tourist area would be best to get some food and a feel for how people are really living.

Hi Israel, Salvador is a big and touristic city. Itapuã is a popular area that I really like, especially because of the beaches of Patamares and Stella Mares. All the malls in Salvador have great self-service buffets and you will pay for what you have in kilograms. Barra is very popular among tourists. If you have plenty of time on your hands, you can visit the islands of Morro de São Paulo and Boipeba. They're paradise places. Praia do Forte alo is very popular. Avoid the restaurant in the Mercado Modelo. They're more expensive and the food is not as good as in other places. In Pelourinho, there is a student restaurant where you can have all the food from Bahia. It's a self-service buffet. Bahia has the equivalent size of France. The Brazilian colonisation started in Porto Segura in the South of Bahia. It's a tourist place like Itaparica, Trancoso... also check Chapada Diamantina out. In the old center of Salvador you will see Brazilian colonial and Baroque architecture. Feel free to ask me any further questions. ua-cam.com/video/wr1wlCgWIms/v-deo.html

@@josuestos thank you so much for taking the time to share all that info.
In London I am a regular guy from a Council Estate so don't want to stay only in the tourist zones. I am lookng forward to exploring some of the Afro Brazilian culture so casa Pierre Verger is interestingto me.... do the Blocos only perform and practise during Carnival? What are the regular communities in Salvador outside of the tourist zone that it might be possible to visit to get a taste of local life?
As you can tell I am excited to visit your city!

Israel, it's a pleasure to give you some tips related to SSA. There are some good communities in the city, you'll have to find by yourself which ones suit you. I really like Itapuã area, which became a popular Brazilian track in the 70s, ua-cam.com/video/79nua_-JA6I/v-deo.html. There, You will find good bars, restaurants, beautiful beaches and will have contact with Soteropolitanos. it's not far from the airport and there are direct buses to the city centre. The city is rich in diversity: music, dance, food, colours and more. Salvador holds the biggest street carnival in Brazil. I am sure you will enjoy it a lot.

Salvador was the first capital of Brazil. Then it moved to Rio de Janeiro and lastly to Brasília.
