How to Make SHIMS quickly, easily, perfectly | DIY

Never buy overpriced, low quality shims again. This easy-to-make jig using a basic table saw will turn out perfect shims that are identical and come to the thinnest feathery edge. Whether installing doors, windows, cabinets, or other projects running out of SHIMS will not be an issue.

Any reason you wouldn't be able to use something like this to also cut smaller hardwood wedges for making wedged tenons? I'm not super experienced so trying to see if there are any obvious pitfalls. I reckon you just cut the wedge shape from the body much smaller and then (of course) use shorter stock to cut a small wedge.

Watched another video for making shims. Nice video and jig but his didn't have a guard like this, so I prefer yours. I do wonder if one could attach a thin guard at the rear that could push the shim away from the blade for safer retrieval. Not a criticism just an idea as I hate reaching near a spinning blade.

I'd suggest customizing to meet your specific needs, no hard and fast rule here! Another possible upgrade is to use a guide bar to slide in the guide rail, instead of using the table fence. Thanks for the feedback.

Can I make this work for a longer shim....and when I say longer I mean 10 feet long to build a slope into my deck surface for installing sheet vinyl....duradeck

I just buy bundles of cedar shingles or shakes, Stack them up and cut em on the table saw to about and inch and a half. You can have hundreds of shims in about 5 minutes

Heh heh - very true! But I find the packaged shims at big box stores expensive and low quality. If you know how to make shims, you'll never run out and they will all have that perfect tip.
