Columbo, "Colombo" here in Italy, it's always, a big hit on Italian Tv. We can see all episodes almost all the year and every year particularly on sunday evening. Never tired of see it...Love it, God bless Columbo.
Sweet, For some reason here in Hungary it has also been big for decades. It's still aired but those who haven't see it originally (e.g. too young now) would never watch it, they consider this an "uncool" thing like grandpas and mas watch it only. Sadly everything is about that nowadays, they completely disregard the artistic value, the acting, the appreciation of different times etc. Also oddly enough, I asked a few American friends of mine (25-30y olds) but they haven't even heard about this great series, or him, let alone saw any episode. It's so odd that it's been a big hit in so many countries in Europe.
Just watched this episode for the first time. Big fan of Cassavetes and the work he's done with Falk(Husbands, Woman Under the Influence, Mikey and Nicky) so it was great to finally see this particular episode.
Probably the most beloved AND INTERESTING character ever on the small screen. he really loved Cassevetes, btw. like a brother. and deeply admired his artistry & guts.
How John Cassavetes' hair is longer, then shorter - a different style- then longer and original style got through continuity is confounding. Still one of the best episodes and I LOVE both actors with a passion. R.I.P Mr Falk and Mr Cassavetes. Two sky high class maestro's
Cassavettes was a brilliant actor and director. Falk, one of his best friends could do it all, comedy and drama. This is a very simple yet great scene showing the great talents of both men. Columbo was a simple yet very complex character that only Falk could play convincingly. Thanks for posting this film clip.
Greatest show ever, and Étude is in the top 10 or 20 episodes, I would say. It's always fun to watch for Michael Lally, the old dude (and Falk's buddy) who appears somehow, somewhere, in every 70's episode. He's the mechanic's helper in the beginning of "Étude in Black." What a great actor John was, too. Rosemary's Baby!
Such a sharp show, and shot so realistically, unlike all those highly color-treated and shaky camera work to cover for zero subpar material, shitty acting, and souless performances. I never tire of watching Columbo, ever.
Like so many others, I'll always love Peter Falk for Columbo, the detective who has more on the ball than he lets anyone see. Watching this scene with him and John Cassvetes (another fave for the original "Dirty Dozen") just reminds me of all the reasons why watching Columbo play cat-and-mouse with his chosen prey remains such a treat.
Something this episode does brilliantly of having the Cassavetes' conductor show off all his unnecessary wealth and vanity. Anyways, it's always nice to see both in front of the camera and you can actually feel the friendship in front. Thank you for adding to UA-cam!
@TheElegantDandyFop You're very welcome. I like this scene because you really get a sense of how much they like working together here; they get a chance to be a little playful, not least of all (as you said) with the conductor's superficial superiority. I posted another scene from this episode but for some reason there's a restriction placed on it by the host site that allows no one to view it. Cassavetes & Falk are such a pleasure to watch (& amazing together, & harrowing, in Mikey & Nicky)
Thinking about it now, I realize that applying Columbo's manners to truly annoying people was the only reason I was able to tolerate 20 years of mostly customer service work. There is a valuable lesson in watching Columbo: never, EVER judge a book by its cover.
There is a very funny blooper at the end of this episode when Columbo asks Cassevetes and wife to come inside for a moment. He promises it will be the last time. Watch the wife's hairstyle. Where was the continuity person!!?? A blooper in an otherwise perfect episode!! This show is genius on all fronts.
@0:36 Peter is straying away from the script and ad-libbing about suicide being depressing and he happened to be in the neighborhood today and all that, and John is trying hard not to laugh... When Peter finally gets back to the script is just after he says: "That's not true...". It's a known fact that Peter, playing Columbo, would often try to intentionally annoy or destabilize the actors in front of him by ad-libbing to get them to be genuinely off-guard for a better performance.
This is one of my all time favorite Columbo episodes may only be 2nd & 3rd..to the one w\Eddie Albert & the one with Ruth Gordon...here's my favorite scene from this episode...Columbo says to the murder " even though I haven't be able to convinced you this is a murder ..I have convinced my superiors of it ..and they have officially assigned me to the case...that's my specialty Ya know ? "HAMOESIDE " Cassavettes was puffing hard on a cigarette his face was like Dam !! Im caught
@Lynn1355 He really is (alas, was) an amazing actor, and his effect on people is perhaps even more amazing. Somehow nearly everyone--across language and cultural barriers (eg Columbo was supposedly quite popular in Iran I believe)--are touched by what I can only figure must be his essential humanity, which shines through in everything he does (even when the material is not of the best). And how his work touches each person in such an individual way...? Miraculous.
Yes, my immigrant parents loved watching Columbo (and Kojak) on Sunday nights in the '70s, but at the time I was just a kid, barely interested in some old fashioned police procedural/detective show. To my 8 year old eyes and brains, Falk belonged to my parents generation. Then, decades later, on college/grad school campuses and film arthouses, I am getting re-introduced to Falk as part of the New Wave of American and European/World cinema. What?!? This aint my parents' Peter Falk!! Who the hell is this??
Only copies that I know about are strictly DVD, sister. It's divided up by seasons in the latest copies that I've seen about. If you want the 70s stuff, best bet is to stick with seasons 1-3, possibly season 4 as well. You can get copies on eBay or Amazon. Amazon also streams episodes for very cheap.
AKA "A Stitch in Crime". This should be held up as proof that Spock the character needed Nimoy more than the other way around. He makes a wonderfully cold and oily villain.
I had read "The Exorcist" and I always thought Columbo was much like the detective investigating the murder in that book when I first saw Columbo. Anybody else see the similarity?? The book was out first. Just curious.
3:57 For people that don't understand this scene. All of this was just to get a handwriting sample. He's trolling. He will lose the house soon. 90 years in prison. This is near the start he needs a writing sample to compare to the killers.
Couldn't he just say he had the flower in his pocket when he entered the girls apartment and put it on while he was there? I didn't get how that detail was so decisive
He already said he put it on at the orchestra and expected his wife to back him up she was already onto him because he knew the victims phone number. he already told columbo it fell off after he took his coat off. They don't show it but Columbo saw the flower on the victims floor before the killer arrived.
Im a huge columbo fan if any one out there can tell me where I can see my ole-annoying favorite detective ...please let me know ...b/c I surely do miss him soooo much ...the closest that I get is watching "MONK" which I do love but Columbo still ranks no#1 for me ..A&E use to air the shows..
Cassavetes' wife in this episode was played by Blythe Danner--and she's sporting a real baby bump (they try to hide and shoot around it; the wife in the episode is not pregnant). The baby in question was Gwyneth Paltrow.
Yeah, he wasn't long for this world by that point, was he? At least he got to go on one last acting adventure with his friend Peter before checking out.
@HScorpio1811 Maybe, or maybe it helps Columbo (and us) to see the oppulent, lavish, lifestyle the meistro is used to, which probably far exceeds a composer's salary, i.e., he's got a lot to protect.
1.36 - You're from New York? - Yes I'm from New York - Better out here, right? Can't say if it's Columbo talking to the Conductor or Peter Falk talking to his Cassavetes buddy, justifying to leave NYC to move to LA
but recently i heard the reason why columbo was interrupted for 11 years, because falk wanted more money. i think this is not appreciating, i would not have made that.

John Cassavettes was a great actor & was taken from this world to young.? RIP John & Peter
I love colombo I have been watching it every Sunday on tv for forty years
god bless you peter falk, no one could have played columbo like you. you will be sorely missed as a great actor.
Just watched this episode for the first time. Big fan of Cassavetes and the work he's done with Falk(Husbands, Woman Under the Influence, Mikey and Nicky) so it was great to finally see this particular episode.
Peter Falk and John Cassavetes. Best friends. Rest easy to both.
Probably the most beloved AND INTERESTING character ever on the small screen. he really loved Cassevetes, btw. like a brother. and deeply admired his artistry & guts.
John Cassavettes was one of the best looking men I have ever laid eyes in. Great actor as well.
What a pleasure to see them both together.

With so much accuracy we go five times up the mountain and nine times down
Best actor I've ever seen miss you Peter RIP
RIP Peter.
Very nice man and while not on this scene my dad was in the episode so I got to meet him face to face
Peter Falk, Ben Gazarra and John Cassavetes. I feel all were underrated as actors.
This is a great episode. I'm in love with both of these men.

John Cassavetes was a great actor and a beautiful man.

Peter Falk is the nicest person and an engaging actor. I love watching his work.

Best friends forever
John Cassavetes was such a natural actor
These 2 were great mates in real life.
R.I.P. Peter Falk.
totally fantastic episode. in case it hasn't been mentioned, Falk and Cassavettes were best friends in real life.
I love Peter Falk and I love Mikey and Nicky.

They were best friends and Peter falk was devastated when he died
@crazy4dariver
This was on RTV last night---superb cast.

Try Amazon...they're streaming full episodes for only a few bucks a piece.

?
@crazy4dariver
Sorry I didn't remove the post to which you replied as soon as it showed up. Thanks for responding to it.
I had read "The Exorcist" and I always thought Columbo was much like the detective investigating the murder in that book when I first saw Columbo. Anybody else see the similarity?? The book was out first. Just curious.
it would take him 45 years to live there, these days

John did write his own name on that check...I can tell the way his hand was moving...
I noticed the same thing... Very observant, that's the first thing I thought of, and looked at the direction..
Cassavetes' wife in this episode was played by Blythe Danner--and she's sporting a real baby bump (they try to hide and shoot around it; the wife in the episode is not pregnant). The baby in question was Gwyneth Paltrow.
pleas some1 let me kno,, where can i find the full movie of columbo ? thx
Yeah, he wasn't long for this world by that point, was he? At least he got to go on one last acting adventure with his friend Peter before checking out.
I think John Cassavetes just wrote down his own name in that check!
One other word I would use that fits: Trickster.
@crazy4dariver ---What role did your dad play?
@HScorpio1811 Maybe, or maybe it helps Columbo (and us) to see the oppulent, lavish, lifestyle the meistro is used to, which probably far exceeds a composer's salary, i.e., he's got a lot to protect.
Are these the full tv episodes? I started to buy the dvd sets, but some viewers said that Universal Studios cut some parts out of the episodes.
@rjplamf61 absolutely correct in all ways.
1.36
- You're from New York?
- Yes I'm from New York
- Better out here, right?
Can't say if it's Columbo talking to the Conductor or Peter Falk talking to his Cassavetes buddy, justifying to leave NYC to move to LA
@msk7046
Mike Alexander - Don Knight was my Pops
Columbo made about $56,000/yr. in today's money according to inflation calculator.
:(
Non Chalante. Suave Debonair. A Yes for my selection closet
0:49 "No no?" lol
but recently i heard the reason why columbo was interrupted for 11 years, because falk wanted more money. i think this is not appreciating, i would not have made that.
ITS MR MIAGI...DANIEL SAN
It has to be Don Johnson's father?!
Really? You met him? What was he like?
Alex has had a hard day....a murder, opening night concert then columbo first thing in the morning....stressful....pass me a cigarette
Values his home to work out how much money he will loose if his wife found out he was having an affair with his pianist = motive
Cesky dabing
This scene is stupid, it does not have any relevance to the plot. But Columbo is still one of my favorite TV shows.
yes it does
CUT THE JOKES!
