that idiot ref actually lost his job over that call. he refused to explain it to fifa, so he has been banned from officiating in the WC from now on. justice.
as much as that terrible call hurt to watch as a USA fan at the time, it did end up setting the stage for one of USA soccer's all time greatest moments against Algeria and brought a lot of new attention to the sport in america.
That is "IF" you score it. The fact remains all of the US players and staff did not throw a temper tantrum after the game like the Mexicans did. Claudio Reyna was even quoted after the Germany game, “Yeah, those are the breaks,” Reyna said. “But we're not going to cry like the Mexicans did. That's the game of soccer. We had other chances.” Arena also blamed our poor finishing as the reason we lost. So maybe just maybe if Mexico stopped relying on the Refs to get them back in the game and actually had put a shot on target that wasn't tame or straight at Friedel they would of gotten back into the game. The same thing happened with the Dutch where Mexico failed to capitalize in the first half when they clearly dominated the game and allowed the referee to make the decision. And before your "no era penal" it was a pen but Robben didn't need to sell it as much as he did.
myboyblue 32 don't forget the quarter and semi-final games at the 2015 gold cup where the only reason they passed on to the finals was because of those stupid pk calls. Then they had the audacity to say they won the cup fair and square in the end. Gimme a break
Donovan shot that in the guy's face, there was about a 10% angle that it could have even had a chance to go in and he did it. That was by far the best goal this match and despite the importance of the Algeria goal, this one was the most talented of the USA's.
+The BLADE Don't think that makes sense. The linesmen make offside calls, head ref can't do that on his own. The flag wasn't raised and the commentator even said it was whistled for a foul.
The ref was from Africa. If you've seen some games between African nations officiated by African refs then you shouldn't be surprised by a ridiculous call like this.
If I had to guess, it's for 3 pulling back on the Slovenian defender. Watch 3 on the replay. I mean, you could argue its a foul. The thing is though there were 4 Americans being fouled as well (including 3), but I can understand why a referee would make that call as it's no secret that defenders always get the calls their way on set pieces.
1st ever Soccer game I watched full 90. Never complained and was proud of 2-2 after 2-0. I've seen 90% of Multiple Leagues results from the past 10 years but yet 3-2 here would have been an amazing result for the ages. Im still glad to have become addicted to the game after such a great match.
If you watch replays and the players are trying too talk to the ref, the players are like, Why isn't that a goal? Why doesn't that count. Ref: That's none of your business.
ephabouyed A draw would have won us the group and I believe we would have been set up to move on even with a loss provided we kept the GD to only 1. Translation: it made a game that could have been a lot less stressful, extremely stressful, which may have worked against us in the Ghana game. Given the results of the 3rd match it didn't matter but heading into the third match it meant A LOT.
The foul was against Bradley so the ref should have played the avantage and gave USA the win, no reason for the whistle, 3-2 far and square, I'm guessing he hates America or a Slovenia fan 😂
+Ryan McGrath really? That's interesting, I didn't know that, but anyway you look at it the ball was in the net, and if the pen got called... You know how often pens get scored anyway so USA should've won this game
Agreed . That ref clearly was paid off to influence that game. I woulda been OK if there was offsides or any penalty by the US, but there were none. Karma won in the end. That ref got a permanent ban
Donovan's was the most upfront goal that took guts to do and so it payed off and managed to inspired the US Team to tie the game! Sadly about the disallowed goal!
***** It's been awhile since I looked at the AP Styleguide, but you're wrong about words that end in "s" not needing an additional s. You're supposed to show possession with an 's unless the word is already pluralized (there are exceptions but they are more based off of pronunciation than concrete rules). It IS United States' (even though United States is usually considered a singular noun), but that's thanks to a quirk and not an example that proves the rule.

Onyewu was never the same after his knee injury. Around this time U.S had some players peaking that really were ruined by career altering injuries....Really unfortunate. Charlie Davies was really turning into a star in Ligue 1 and USMNT. Jermaine Jones in his prime also wasn't able to make the switch in time. With those three in form for this team I really think we had a chance to go far....Later on another guy Stuart Holden was becoming a young star in the EPL too...Really unfortunate for a nation looking to break through.
USA is making more efforts to reclaim their expected position in Men's World Soccer competition. USA had what it takes to be the greatest soccer Nation but they are careless about soccer other than their local sports like Basket ball, Base ball and American Football game. Recently USA had started working on how to bounce back in to the forgotten soccer game. US Women soccer is already on top among other Nation, while we are waiting for the Men's National team to lift the Men's World Cup.
I often wonder how much money they gave the reef. They probably had to give him 24/7 security at his home in Slovenia, and the security was probably very busy.
Games like these make me proud to be an American. People may scrutinize the Americans at times, but there is one thing Americans will never do, and that is to give up.
Okay I know that like 3 of the USA players were getting held and there was no call. But this is my first time seeing this, at 3:16 one of the USA players is in a HEADLOCK. What was that ref seeing?!
If anything, the Americans were being fouled. If you look closely, there were several American players having their jerseys tugged on, or having the arms of their opponents wrapped around them.

Back when the USMNT really had guts, courage, and passion. If we're to have any hope, we need to recover that fighting American spirit again...Alas, I have not seen it in recent years.
I'm still amazed Landon Donovan's roofer (1:58 in this video) is *not* on the official FIFA Top 10 goal list for this World Cup, or *any* Top 10 list from this World Cup that I can find (even in the US, the goal often doesn't make Top 10 goal lists, and the goal against Algeria takes its place). That is truly one of the most difficult and shocking goals I have ever seen! I *still* have *no idea* how he squeezed that ball perfectly over Handanovic's head, the crossbar, and the right post with only about 10 degrees of angle to work with! It was truly stunning, and arguably the *most* important goal scored in the entire group stage by *any* team! Think about it, *before* that goal, the US is *well* on its way to lose that game (they're down 2-0 at the time) and not even qualify for the knockout rounds! Let's be clear, if the US loses this game, and all future events remain the same, the US would *not* have gone through (the final table would have been Slovenia 6 points, England 5 points, USA 4 points, Algeria 1 point). Without that goal, Michael Bradley's goal later is meaningless as it is no longer the equalizer, the US loses this game, and the goal against Algeria is also meaningless because of this game's loss. But instead, the US draw this game and beat Algeria, and the final table *instead* reads: USA 5 points, England 5 points (USA higher due to goals scored), Slovenia 4 points, Algeria 1 point! The USA went from 2-0 down and almost certainly headed out of the tournament to *topping the group!* A *complete* reversal of fortunes that almost 100% is catalyzed by *that* one nearly impossible-to-score goal! Again, this goal deserves to be in more Top 10 lists for this World Cup! Truly one of the greatest and most impactful moments of this tournament (and one of the most sublime pieces of skill in the entire group stages)!
Meh, that's not quite as great as it sounds. Europeans face great competition and are prepared for every World Cup competition. The US has to deal with so many minnows aside from Mexico and Costa Rica. Thankfully, Honduras, Panama, Jamaica and others are rapidly improving. CONCACAF is definitely on the rise. Also, while CONCACAF gets 3.5 World Cup spots, UEFA gets 14, so Europeans can't complain if you don't make it. European teams have PLENTY of spots to claim their place in the World Cup.
Fabulous comeback by the US. Terrible officiating of course. However watch what happens at 2:13 on the Donovan goal. Take a look at the two other US players in the frame. Donovan is in the box with the ball and what he really needs there are options. He needs to have options to shoot or pass. Watch the two other US players. They run in to each other! This to me is a prime example of what is wrong in US soccer right now. The players just don't have that extra understanding of the game that world class club teams have. It's similar to basketball. Great players and great teams in basketball have an inate understanding of spacing and where to be on the court and are able to anticipate what is going to happen and where they need to be to receive a pass. US soccer players rarely seem to have that extra understanding of where to be without the ball, how to put themselves in a good position or how to anticipate where players are going to be.

One of the best group match in WC history. I remember this match like yesterday. Donovan was genius.
In the end the disallowed goal didn't have any consequence as the USA topped the group anyway, here's hoping for more this summer in Brazil.
