A rabbit’s sleeping position can reveal a lot about their personality, health and how they are feeling.
This guide breaks down the most common rabbit sleeping positions and explains the science behind why bunnies sleep in certain ways.
The Loaf Position
A Loaf position is when your bunny tucks its legs under itself, usually with relaxed ears, and a drooped head. They will condense their body into a tight little ball, resembling a loaf of bread.
Many bunnies prefer to sleep in a loaf position because they feel safer against any possible danger. If a threat were to appear quickly, they could get their hind legs moving immediately.
This resting position may also indicate that your rabbit is trying to conserve body heat as it gives less surface area for the heat to escape from.
Oftentimes, Rabbits keep their eyes open while sleeping in this position. Which brings us to the next sleeping position of our list.
Sleeping with Open Eyes
Rabbits often sleep with their eyes open. They sleep with their eyes closed too, but only if they feel safe and comfortable with their surroundings.
As prey animals, bunnies are on the lookout for predators, even when they are sleeping. By sleeping with their eyes open, a rabbit can detect danger while asleep.
Surprisingly, bunnies can sleep with their ears upright too. It’s just a little less common.
if your rabbit sleeps with their eyes open in your home, it may indicate that they do not yet feel safe or comfortable in their surroundings.
To tell if your bunny is sleeping or not, just look at their nose. A fast twitching nose is a clear sign of a rabbit who’s awake and aware.
And remember, rabbits dream during the REM stage of sleep and they twitch their feet or their mouths in response to whatever's happening in their dreams. This is when you know your bunny is in deep sleep.
Dead Bunny Flop
Sleeping on one side with their limbs stretched out means that your rabbit is fully content and feeling safe. Your bunny is in total relaxation mode and does not feel the need to remain alert. Usually, rabbits fall into a deep sleep in this position.
Sleeping sideways is one of the most vulnerable position for a rabbit because it can take much longer to rise up in case of danger or predators’ attack. So if your bunny sleeps this way next to you, it means that they fully trust you and feel comfortable with you.
But remember, this position may also indicate that your rabbit is hot and trying to cool off by putting their core against the cold floor.
Superman
In this position, a rabbit lays down on their stomach, with their back feet and tail stretched out behind them. What comes to your mind when you spot your bunny in this position is the image of a superman. Pretty cool, huh?
This is another position that puts your rabbit in a very vulnerable situation. This is because their back feet are stretched out and it would take them much longer to get up and run away if they have to. If they sprawl out next to you, it is a clear sign that your rabbit trusts you and feels safe with you. Oftentimes, rabbits rest in this position when they are very comfortable. They also may adopt this position to cool down in hot summer days.
Sphinx
In this position, the muscles of the rabbit are tense and contracted and this actually prevents them from falling into a deep sleep. Therefore, this is a resting position adopted by a rabbit who wants to relieve itself of stress and be comfortable. Your bunny is probably tired and is trying to take a break, but is also ready to take off if needed.
Rabbits often get into this position when they have a considerable amount of energy and they don't feel like sleeping. They would prefer staying in a resting position where they can easily get up and take off.
Therefore, you can only spot your pet in this position when they are taking a nap. You cannot see them sleeping like this at night.
The lambchop
Does your rabbit stretch out one or both rear legs, and rolls slightly to one side? Good! This is referred to as “the lamb chop” or “sun bather” position. It means your rabbit is relaxed and content. If the floor is cold, your rabbit may use this sleeping position to cool down during the warmer months of the year.
Back to Back
If you have more than one rabbit in your home, you might notice that they sleep back-to-back. Wild rabbits tend to huddle to together for protection and warmth in the wilderness. It makes them feel safe.
Rabbits can do this with their human pack, too! back-to-back sleeping is a way for your bunny to bond with you, showing you that they can trust you and feel safe with you. If your bunny lays on top of you, or sleeps next to you while you pet them, they’re just showing you some extra love! It’s their way of saying, “I love you”.
But don’t worry if your rabbit doesn’t snuggle with you. Bunnies are prey animals and very skittish. It takes a while for most rabbits to trust their human. - Навчання та стиль

Mine does that all the time
Yep it’s called a binki!
I have 2 bunnies, they sleep in all these positions, but at night they always snuggle with one another, either in a kind of ying-yang position with one bunnies feet at the others head or they just straight up cuddle by laying flat and one tucking it's head under the other with their limbs intertwined, it's honestly really adorable
I also have to and they do the same its always so cute and adorable 🥺🥺😊😊😁
Ah yes, the 69 position

Our bunnies sleep in all sorts of impossible positions, sometime even on their back with their paws pointing upwards. It’s like they want to give us a heartattack 🤣 They typically roll and jump around till tired and just drop in a random position looking dead 🤪
haha so true, my rabbit once went in to a dead flop but his head was completely twisted around XD nearly scared the life out of me, I thought something was wrong with him.

I just lost my bunny last Friday 😢😢 and looking for bunny videos. And this made me so happy cause he did all the positions mentioned through his 2 years. Sad he passed so young. Heartbreaking he isn't with us anymore. 💔 but looking forward to our new start soon. And possibly new additions when we are ready again. Be kind and give love always. Never know when is the last day. ❤❤🙏

It’s great knowing my cute little Daisy did feel comfortable and safe with me ❤️
My 11 month old American Chinchilla Rabbit sleeps on his side, eyes fully closed, nose not twitching, all the time. He loves his ears, belly, and even tail rubbed, by me. He even doesn’t mind me picking him up and holding him although he doesn’t like being put down. I’ve had him since he was just eight weeks old and I am honored that I have been able to earn his trust so much. There’s nothing quite like knowing you have a trusted such a vulnerable creature and once you do, communicating with them is amazing
My guinea pigs do the “ flop” where they press their head into the ground, flop their legs out and close their eyes. It’s adorable!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Awwwww so cuteeee
Yes. I have 3 boys... sometimes (more rarely) I catch all three of them in 1 hidey..., sometimes all on their own, other times just out in the open all sprawled out. It never gets out how cute this is. My prey animals got over being prey spirals. Now they just wheek orders at me
I’m impressed with how accurate this video is and the information provided! Good job! 👏🐰💗
Thanks for some good wholesome information clearly explained. I’ve noticed a lot of “Instagram rabbit whisperers” out there feeding ignorance into the public so am very grateful for videos like this that present clear information with logical reasoning to back it up.
We call the "dead bunny flop" a croissant instead. Because it's also breadrelated :D just like the loaf
I just adopted my bun a day before yesterday but in this Little period of time she started to climb on my laps , well when she came she was afraid even while I was giving her food but now she completely relaxed 😊
Imagine a life where you have to sleep with your eyes open. Rescue all the bunnies!!
My 2 boys sometimes sleep slightly on top of one another, it's like huddling isnt close enough for them😅
Same
My both boys also 😂
I've had my bunny for 3 weeks now and only heard of the dead flop position. I thought it was the only position meaning that he trust you entirely and was kinda confused if he really liked me or not because he still didn't do it. Now after this video I realised he trust me as he sleeps in a lot of those positions near me one being the back to back. Thank you for sharing this video and making me realised that my bunny does in fact trust and love me
I've had mine for less than a week. Come to think of it he prob does sleep in all positions. I just dont notice bc they all look the same & idk what to look for. But now I do. The way I categorize his sleeping positions is 1) *king of the hill* : finds highest pillow to chill on. 2) *gives u a mini heart attack* : bc hes sleeping, hiding somewhere. Mainly just in between pillows. 3) *being lovey dovey* somewhere beside me or on me. 4) *go somewhere* : sleeps w/ butt point towards ur face
😊 I knew he was a smart guy. I let him sleep w/ me during the day & he didn't even go wandering off. My poor hubby :/. He knows I'm the bunny's fav :/. But he loves him regardless. I dont even remember what we were doing yesterday, but rocky, our bunny, paid him like 1 mins worth of attention. Then immediately came back to me. Disss, 😭💔 I can only imagine. It's like awww u come here qt of mine. Qt sometimes: nah I'm good ✋✌
My bunny’s favourite position is the lamb chop, she does it nearly every single time
Sometimes my rabbit...
Well...He, He rolls on ma floor-
I adopted my first rabbit and he's been with me for 2 weeks now and I noticed that he doesn't close his eyes for days now so I was kind of scared he might get sleep deprived lol glad I saw this vid cause I didn't know they can sleep with their eyes open lol now I feel assured :)
The fact that you could come up with this crazy stuff is pretty jaw dropping.
I like how bigger youtubers like this include bunnies my buns sleep in the flop all the time! also the loaf they are also free ranged
Gotta give props to this, very informative video. As a long time bunny owner, I finds lots of videos like these can give somewhat misleading or lacks some important information about rabbit behavior. Nicely done!
Aww this video made me so happy because now I know my bunny's are feeling safe!

My rabbit has exhibited relaxed behavior over the years since I adopted her at 8 months old. She has her own playpen arranged inside my house that's made her feel secured.😇
Every time my bunny does the dead funny flop I find it so dang adorable
Theres something about seeing a rabbits flopping and just thinking
"thats cute and adorable. I am now happier"
One of my bunnies (I have three) loved to fall asleep on my lap whilst i was watching videos on my PC :) He cuddled up real good and fell asleep :D Now i dont get him out as often anymore, which makes him moody, but he doesnt like to get picked up so i go in their enclosure (they now got a whole room to themselves, since i moved) and pet them there :) '
I also wondered.. My third bunny is a younger one and I adopted her when someone let her lose in my parents garden. I always wondered if she is actually happy, but seems like it from judging her sleeping positions now :D She also now lets me pet her way more and enjoys it :)
One of my rabbits sometimes sleeps with his legs up in the air

same lol they sleep backwards
my rabbit sleeps in a donut and rolls like one
I love how there's a cat illustration when you're talking abt predators. My bunnies like to torment my cats, so I guess they're the exception!
My bunbun mauls the cats haha. My skittish cat goes into hiding when bun is freeroaming 😂
i like that, 'it takes a while for most rabbits to trust you and sleep next to you' i got my 11th rabbit Squidge back in september, he is a 2 year old and was used for breeding, before i brought him home. after like 2 weeks of him being here he was sleeping down my jumping most days and had along cuddly nap with me for a few hours where we shared a pillow
Nice summary, thanks! :)
My bunny sleeps all these ways , but she’s currently in loaf after eating lol 😭.

I just recently got a rabbit, and he amazed me.. good thing he gets along with my cats in the house.
One afternoon I caught my lionhead 'Elsa' lying on her back warming her belly from the sun shining in. All four legs up and stretched from front to back. Total relaxation. I absolutely got a couple pictures. It's been the only time I have ever witnessed her doing that. Otherwise she does all these positions.
One of my rabbits sleeps like a cat, tucking her forelegs under her chin and hindlegs in the lambchop position. My rabbits are outdoor free-roamers and I am soo happy to see they feel safe and allow themselves to be in absolute relax and vulnerable state. Lots of love from Malaysia everyone!

One of my bunnies was severely ill during December and early January. He always slept in the loaf-position during that time. So when your bunny only ever sleeps in that position watch out what their food-consumption is. When it is low, then chances are, they are sick too.
In his case it was E. Cuniculi, a disease caused by a monocellular parasite. The medicine that finally helped him, after treatment with antibiotics was unsuccessful, was "Panacur".
I'm happy to know my babies are happy 😊 thanks love ur videos

Once, my bunny did the dead flop and she gave herself a too big momentum so she made a complete roll. It was so funny to see as she looked so confused. Since then she only do the dead flop above a wall 😆. She’s more on the superman (which we call the frog, because of the look of the back legs) and the lamb chop. For now, she is sleeping in a bun. And she have a weird habit : she have all the space needed (the entire first floor of the house) but sometimes, she still loves to sleep under chairs with a bar almost poking the front of her head !
I remember I used to have a bunny 🥺😭😢 but it died😭😭😭 and I remember this funny moments where my bunny always used to get on my sofa and my mom used to put these blankets for the couch running like ugly and when my bunny to get on it she used to pee there🤣 I love her so much r.i.p. beauty rest in peace 😭🥺😢🙏🏻

My bunny only has one eye and he loves flopping onto his side with his good eye to the ground. He won't be able to see anything because he doesn't have an eye on the side of his face that's facing up. Since that puts him in a really vulnerable position, I take that as a sign that he realy trusts us

Thanku bro, I have a male rabbit 😂 Very naughty
Really? I have 2 female rabbits and they’re REALLY bad (As in behavior.)
@@thejunkyguy2768 Why 2 females🤔
@@NaitikSrivastava1 It’s because in my family we usually get female pets
@@thejunkyguy2768 ok I have a male rabbit and I was thinking to bring a female one, But we don't want their babies, Is there any option?
@@NaitikSrivastava1 You can get the males neutered and it’s much cheaper and easier on them than spaying. But you can do that too, if you get a male and a female, the male rabbit has to be neutered to avoid stress on her from constant biting and humping. Plus later on males will start to fling pee everywhere.
Please do not put your bunny’s in your arms upsidedown please it will stress them out 🙏🏻

My bunny usually jumps to the side of the cage, slips down on it sideways and sometimes ends up with her belly showing.
