We had a stray show up years ago, and she ended up bringing four kittens to us after she got to know us. One day we never saw her again, but her kittens were still with us, and we think she could have been attacked by another animal or hit by a car. She was a cat that was never indoors, and did not want to be indoors, but her kittens were so young, we were able to bring them in and find them homes. Actually one home.

I recall watching an older cousin of mine help a fawn out in the cornfield that somehow got separated from its mother. She carefully approached it, pet it, and fed it for several hours. Luckily its mother could be seen near the fence row waiting. Once she left and gave plenty of distance between her and the fawn, the mother came out to retrieve her fawn.
This was back around 1976 or so, it obviously left an impression on my me, as I'm now 54.

Reminds me of when me and my mother found a racing/homing pigeon in the back garden back when I was a kid. It soon became obvious that that it was totally exhausted and couldn’t even walk let alone fly.
There’s no way that my mother would have been able to go pick the pigeon up without attempting escape or resist otherwise. Of course as soon as she picked it up we could see the ID band on one of the legs so it was either a carrier or racing pigeon. We’d initially planned to simply move it to a safe place up off the ground and supply food and water until it recovered. But when we saw the ID ring then we know it wasn’t a wild one.
So we took it inside where I emptied out my toy box, lined it with wood shavings from our supplies meant for our guinea pigs. I know that we put a water bowl inside the makeshift carrier as well as some food but I honestly don’t remember what the food actually was. I think it was bird feed meant for wild birds out on feeder. I have to admit that it did indeed eat and drink quite a lot once it calmed down. But yeah I totally admit that I doted on it. I made sure it had everything it needed.
And so, once the pigeon had truly been settled in, we took the number on the ID tag and wrote it down. Then my mother contacted the pigeon racing organisation and gave the officer the code on the ID tag so the owner could be quickly identified. It didn’t take long to track down the owners of the pigeon and tell them that the bird was alive and being cared for.
It turned out that the owner lives a bit more than an hour’s drive away and all his pigeons had returned home except one. When he was told that the pigeon had been found and was safe and being cared for, he was extremely happy and grateful. He didn’t waste any time in getting started for the long journey ahead to come and pick up the pigeon.and take it home.

It’s like when a jogger found a pigeon with an injured wing near our old house. She picked him up, trying to see what was wrong. When he didn’t immediately attack her hands or start flapping, she knew something was wrong. This was late 1990s.
She brought him over to where Mom was gardening, and my sister was playing with worms. I was… reading a book. (Probably) But this woman asked Mom if we had an open box for an injured bird. We did… old shoebox that we hadn’t tossed out yet. And this pigeon just calmly sat in the box while we tried to figure out what to do with him.
We ended up taking him to the vet, where we learned he was badly dehydrated, and his wing was badly sprained but not broken. We got a crash course in dove care (pigeons are indeed doves) and had a ‘pet’ pigeon for a week or so.
I now sometimes care for a magpie. He’s not a pet (try telling *him* that). He’s like a cat, in that he chose me. And taught our actual cats that he is not to be harmed! (No one was injured in the lesson, just startled)

My twins found a kitten that had been left on the side of the road. They picked him up and brought him home trying to sneak him past me. I caught them coming up the driveway and asked what they were trying to hide. They held him up and I fell in love with him right away. One of his eyes is bad and he’s completely blind in it. I call it his moon. His name is Bean, aka Bean Purrito and he’s the love of my life. So glad they found him. All 3 cats we have were abandoned on the street and we love them like family.

This is the kind of thing that I have to remember when I lose faith in the world. Without hesitation I stopped my van and picked her up. I remember that she got scared and scratched me hehe, but when we got home she understood that I was not a threat but her salvation. Soon after, she didn't want to be separated from me. She was with me for 1 month and then she left with a new family and a new friend, a cat her age.
Today she is a healthy and happy kitten, I would do it again without hesitation, with any animal.😍

One night, waiting at a bus stop in freezing winds, another passenger and I were huddled together for warmth. Neither of us had the right coats! When the wind shifted direction, we were surprised when a way-too-skinny stray dog shoved her way between us, also wanting warmth. We were waiting for over an hour for that bus! And in that time, we’d ducked into a little 24-hour convenience store to get some water and dog-safe food for her. And snacks for us.
When the bus did arrive, we’d fashioned a collar for her and a makeshift leash out of a couple of scarves. That guy was determined to adopt this dog!… I would have, but I have three cats, and dogs are not allowed in my lease (hence the cats)
I saw the guy and the dog a few weeks ago. She’s filled out, is no longer skittish and scared. Definitely a mutt, and her name is Honey. She’s such a sweet girl. She sure remembers the two of us that helped her that night 😊
