@@MarksUpholstery they're about 4" longways down the 2x4s, the width of the 2x4 (so 3 1/2") by about 1/2 deep. I ended up just cutting pieces that were big enough to wrap the inside of the notches, and then I just wrapped the boards as you did. After that, I used a utility knife to cut out the notches from the main piece of carpet and then stapled the holes that I cut really well around the notches.
I mean the material you wrapped the poplar. I have some black locust I will probably use. I need to make the bunks though as it is tough enough to get my boat back on the trailer

I used 8/4 poplar I had at the shop. You could use 2x4. I bought my bolts and carpet at Home Depot.
