Burt Lancaster's athleticism in this movie shows you how great an actor he was. He brought real character to this role. Along with Rod Steiger, probably the finest actor the US ever produced.
1:19 Rest In Peace Jeanne Moreau (1928-2017) I watched this film for the first time when I was 10/11, back on 2006, and I inmediately liked it, I watched it almost every day after school, and made me develop a strong interest for history of WWII, which I still have today
@@Glocko44 There was one shot where the camera was positioned under and in front of a train that went off the rails. Amazing that it didn't get destroyed.
I watched this movie a thousand times after recording it when I was young. Still remember every expression, bomb and scene. i love the part when traindrivers flee into the tunnel for the Spitfire.. The sounds of bombs, guns, steam, sirens, and the music are unforgettable!
Caligulazz i managed to trace the Rive-Reine Station , the house where they locked Burk Lancaster overnight. Also i think i found the road /track/ river location at the end of the movie on Google maps street view.
The film is very exciting, very human and plays with the thoughts of people. I'll never forget him, it's fantastic, it makes people cry with joy and hate.
If you ever have a bad cold or are feeling rotten, or just plain fed up, and you see that this movie is going to be broadcast on some channel in the afternoon (with no ad breaks!), then I can guarantee that you will be on the road to recovery and full health just a few minutes into this well-acted, atmospheric and exciting movie. The B&W aspect is easier on the eye. Young people today take note!
Best Story and Screenplay Award to this movie at 38th Academy Awards. My dad showed me this movie in 1990. I was only 11 yrs old. At that time we had very little access to foreign films in Mumbai/India.
This was an amazing movie. Burt Lancaster jumping on and off trains, real explosions, stunning camera work, no glitter, no gloss, no nonsense. Characters are honest and brave. I'm shocked I never heard of it until 2023. It is now available on prime.
One of those amazing cinema experiences that people have forgotten about, real film-making, hands on with Lancaster doing all his own stunts and real trains, real explosions. Several cameras were wrecked making this film. A gritty documentary feel that puts you into the story and a poignant ending that has you thinking. Compare with the deadly dull mess of Monuments Men.
I can't believe I never saw this before. Great cast, and very interesting scenes for train lovers. It's always a thrill to see the French Resistance in action You don't have to have color film and high-tech special effects to have an exciting movie. This is now one of my favorite WWII movies.
The photography in this black and white movie is a real work of art! Very appropriate for the story.I’m surprised that such good work was created back then….1964.The director of photography, the camera person have a good eye. They obviously learned their lessons well from the impressionists and the old masters.❤
3:41 Fun fact: in that shot, they set up a few cameras for the scene, but weren't expecting the crash to be that violent, and all but one of the cameras was destroyed by the train. The camera that survived, has the shot you see right there.
One of well photographed n composed warbased movie of sixties.Composer Maurice Jarre at his best.Lancaster,Scofield n Funny acted superbly.Though fiction still enjoyable.
Thank you ! I love this movie !
First saw this movie when I was probably 6 or 7 years old. I loved it even though I had no idea what was going on at the time, I used to call it the "blow up train tape." Man I put that VHS to work. This and others like Where Eagles Dare replaced Saturday morning cartoons for me ha.
Me too. First saw this movie 18th july 1974. And it is very interesting......THE GREATEST NAMES OF THE GREATEST ARTISTS OF FRENCH.......ARE SPANISH..... SALVADOR DALÍ, JUAN GRIS, PABLO PICASSO, UTRILLO......SPANISH ARTISTS
incredible cast, great story, and train accidents etc, are fabulous--no one does this today--this film did not make money upon release, i don't it would be made today--too bad
Have seen the movie as a 12yold and then a few times great movie. It is simply wonderful. I'm told the Mr Burt Lancaster started the partially buttoned Sweater Fashion for Men in this film.
Saw this in the theater at age 10: First time I heard someone swear in a movie: "You crazy bastard".......I heard some murmurings of surprise behind me.....
Copped the soundtrack to this in "high fidelity" ie glorious one-channel mono recording! Looks to be fairly mint, like played once or twice. Funny to read these reviews about the "glory of b/w" and the record cover is in full color and looks really exciting! Then you flip to the back and instead of b/w shots from the film you get line drawings in it instead! Weird. I did not know for sure the film was in b/w until I saw the trailer. I had an idea it was in b/w because of the director, He loved the mystery of b/w. Sheesh. Anything with Burt is great, he was probably the best film actor of all time, if you give it some real deep thought. A guy's guy who could act because he LOVED THE CON had to, he was so good at it!
I'm so sorry, but you know what's a little sad? The trailer says, "It will carry you to the peak of adventure," and then again it says it towards the end of the trailer, "It WILL carry you to the peak of adventure," like "Please watch it, please believe us!" Dude, it's Paul Scofield and Burt Lancaster, you don't have to tell me, I'll watch it just for them alone! LOL
This is a great war filmed in B/W to capture the old WW-2 films about the French underground during the end of the war as this German General tries to leave with treasures on a train as Lancaster and his group isn't going to let him off so easy . Here is a trivia fact about the film , When Lancaster gets shot in the leg but during a stunt , Lancaster broke his leg so that's really why he is limping .
@1:40 the movie makers kill off the train engineer because he was contractually obligated to appear in other acting work at that time, he actually had more scenes in the movie yet to be filmed.
i only recall seeing a small portion of this movie near the end with the german officer realizing labiche betrayed him,,was he also slow minded or only acting like that to fool the german?or did i remember it worng?i will watch it when i have time,,idk how these things come to mind and then i find myself looking for them,i did not even know the name of the movie but knew lancaster was in it so i searched and here i am lol ,,i love good old movies like this where there was once a world that made more sense,,when i have bouts of depression movies always take me away from all the pain,i go on binges sometimes lol
i fancy myself a movie expert *kidding* my favorite movie of all time is Goodfellas..My favorite horror movie of all time is the original Halloween..But man do i love this movie. It's like some sort of secret no one really knows about and Langcaster is incredible in it
Just goes to show was a washed up sack of shit the "Modern" movie industry really is,especially as all they seem to do nowadays is remakes. What do they teach directors and actors these days, assuming any of them are actually taught.

One of the best films of all time, great pace to it, beautifully shot, great cast with some tremendous performances, a really complete film.
Agreed, there are many shots that for the time were considered extremely difficult or impossible, such as the camera on the Spitfire

A timeless classic to be watched over and over, great to see how fit and agile Burt Lancaster was considering he was 51 when this was made.
Just got the new 4K restoration. Never saw it before, but love director John Frankenheimer’s work!
It was impressive that he did many of his own stunts too - jumping on and off trains.
Love this movie.. I have it on DVD... lost count of how many times I've watched it!
Same here my friend
Same here Sir. Have it on my cellphone. Greetings from Chandigarh, India
I watcht it when I was 16. At 67 is still great
A truly marvellous film.
A great trailer to one of the most underrated films of all time.
And not widely known enough which is a big reason why I wanted to upload this
It's my favourite WW2 film,bloody brilliant

+Dustshoe i watched it today and it was incredible
One of my Favorites. The ending is so Powerful. With the Art strewn about the towns people an the sound of the Steam Engine barely workin. WOW!
I agree one of the greatest films ever. The ending just plain turns ya stomach. Cause shit like this really Happend.
It is worth to just buy so you can watch it all the time like I do haha
This film is very addictive and it is a true masterpiece.

they don't do films like this anymore, too bad--this film is top notch all the way--50 yrs. old and it still is riveting
Absolutely!

Watch it. It is a great movie. Much better than many movies made these days.
Well said
Haha me too, watched it so many times and it never gets old, one of the best movies ever, pure classic
One of the best movies of all times. Cried watching some scenes in ir.
Just seen this. Great off kilter camera angles in final scenes. Terrific direction and cinematography.
Love this movie.... one of the best
Agreed!

A PHENOMENAL MOVIE!!!
Have seen the movie as a 12yold and then a few times great movie. It is simply wonderful. I'm told the Mr Burt Lancaster started the partially buttoned Sweater Fashion for Men in this film.
this trailer is better than any modern one. "It will carry YOU to the PEAK OF ADVENTURE!"
REAL TRAINS! No CGI.
It makes all the difference honestly, people actually had to know what they were doing back then on set not just stand in front of a screen
I remember seeing this Trailer on my VHS Copy of Santa Fe Employee Recognition Special from Pentrex.
+TommyPickles Fan1992 Same here, I also remember recording it off Turner Classic Movies back in the Fall of 2007.
This trailer gives away too much of an excellent movie. If you're going to watch the movie, don't watch this first.

I think it works better that way. Then again I haven't seen or read the other scenes so I might be wrong.
all that training he had in the circus as a kid

All my favorite movies when i was a kid have turned into shit! How naive i was! I'm embarrassed.
