The 80's was the golden era in gymnastics, however it wasn't without its flaws. Over and underscoring was probably the worst during that time because having a big name meant a bit more than having style and originality
Being Soviet was what made you a champion, let’s face it. Silivas winning the other events was honestly surprising- it really only happened because Elena made clear errors that couldn’t be ignored.
I'm a Silivas fan, but I do think she was overscored here. That being said, however, Shush was overscored too. A 9.987 means that multiple judges gave her 10s with that clear hop on landing!
Nicole S Nadia’s first 10 had a hop. Back then hops were okay. Mastery of a skill, routine & apparatus had a different definition. Most important is performance in comparison to your peers. In the end, the right winner won (Boginskya).
A double twisting Yurchenko, stuck, and she scores lower than a single. What a crock. Love watching this ‘sport’ but there’s something to be said for sports like athletes where the numbers don’t lie and you can’t hide behind reputation.
Shushu had a hop on her first vault-I had not noticed that before. 9.987 is too high but relative to Silivas it's fair enough. Potoroc should have gotten a 10.00 on her second vault just by virtue of the fact that the judges were handing out 10.00's like candy at these Olympics even with glaringly obvious mistakes.
Jorge Reinoso Ibarra yes, scores from the team compulsories and optionals (averaged together) carried over. This was the last Olympic cycle with this rule
Remember when the horse was almost an afterthought and virtually all of the vault's power came from the springboard? Man, vault has changed since 2000 almost as dramatically as bars did in the 80s.
was 1992 the first olympics that they HAD to do different vaults from two different families in event finals? i remember they did the same vault in 68 and 72 but in 76 they did two different vaults from two different families (handsprings and tsukaharas were all they had then) but here several do just yurchenko entries
I cant believe that Chouchounova got a higher score than Potorac on the first vault! With the tens that they were handing out at this Olympics I was a bit surprised not to see one come up for Potorac on her first vault. It seems that they had already decided who were going to get the 10s at these games.
SVETLANA BOGINSKAYA was my crush! She's the more beautiful and graceful gymnastic woman of all times EVER! She was my platonic love in my youth, she was perfect for me. But Shushunova and Silivas were the queens in 1988!
Unfortunately they never gave her the importance she deserved, the judges always gave her low scores and she deserved more. She was almost perfect. She had bad luck, although she never gave up and tried for years, in fact 3 Olympics followed. And that gives me even more credit to Boginskaya!
Silivas, Potorac, and Shuchonova were SEVERELY overscored. It was painfully obvious. How did silivas get a 9.90 for her vault and the third girl got a 9.812 w ghost en truth be told the other girl had a better vault than her. Silivas is a great legend but in this compitition, she was heavely overscored.
I´m not familiar with the code from that time but I guess that adding a twist on their vaults added as well a bonus on their final score, it might was a trend, don´t know... but was obvious the overscore on Silivas vaults
@sidthesquid74 Its true, he's had to really dumb down for coverage with christine on BBC, which is a pity. He does, however, overuse the phrase ' Unbelievable!' far too much!
i LOVED Silivas back then; watching all these tears later , though, i see how grossly overscored she wS in vault. i mean Brandy johnson's??? ru kidding me? she was spectacular and would easily win today with the bias ahift that hS taken place
dont know why you got a thumbs down...your right she was crap at vault here!! her form was bad and i dont think (pardon the pun) she ever had her legs shut on meeting the vault after the R/O....either ppl are blind or they cant take a negative comment......and im not a Shushu fan either!
Boy, a weak first vault for Stoyanova which is why she didnt medal in these finals. I would have had Potorac first in this competition with Bogi second.. Johnson deserved the bronze medal only because she started out in a weak position.
The 80's was the golden era in gymnastics, however it wasn't without its flaws. Over and underscoring was probably the worst during that time because having a big name meant a bit more than having style and originality
Aka being a Soviet
AKA being a Romanian.
Chocolate Muffin or romanian lol (looking at you Gina Gogean)
Boginskaya should be 3rd
Being Soviet was what made you a champion, let’s face it. Silivas winning the other events was honestly surprising- it really only happened because Elena made clear errors that couldn’t be ignored.
Eu aqui , com a minha 🍿 pipoca , 33 anos depois , com a mesma emoção como se fosse em 1988 !!💫
I'm a Silivas fan, but I do think she was overscored here.
That being said, however, Shush was overscored too. A 9.987 means that multiple judges gave her 10s with that clear hop on landing!
you know at that time the name of the gymnast could make the difference between a good mark and a great mark. reputation was a big factor in scoring
Nicole S Nadia’s first 10 had a hop. Back then hops were okay. Mastery of a skill, routine & apparatus had a different definition. Most important is performance in comparison to your peers. In the end, the right winner won (Boginskya).
SHUSHUNOVA PURE ART 💕
5:35 the curse of the commentator🤦🏽♂️. Shushu falling on vault is like the Fei and Maroney shocker.
Браво, Елена!
Potorac was totally robbed here. So impressed at the DTY in 1988.
nicksline Yeah she even stuck it too! Awesome! Her two scores should have been reversed.
SHE WAS ROBBED. PERIOD.
A double twisting Yurchenko, stuck, and she scores lower than a single. What a crock. Love watching this ‘sport’ but there’s something to be said for sports like athletes where the numbers don’t lie and you can’t hide behind reputation.
Did she complete the twist? Looked slightly under rotated. But great landings.
Politics always politics who they like not who earns it
They skipped right over Brandy Johnson's vaults. They even announced her name then cut right to Borianas vaults.
Shushu had a hop on her first vault-I had not noticed that before. 9.987 is too high but relative to Silivas it's fair enough. Potoroc should have gotten a 10.00 on her second vault just by virtue of the fact that the judges were handing out 10.00's like candy at these Olympics even with glaringly obvious mistakes.
questions: Did compulsories score add to the EF?
Jorge Reinoso Ibarra yes, scores from the team compulsories and optionals (averaged together) carried over. This was the last Olympic cycle with this rule
I really thought, 100% sure, that Shushunova would earn the vault gold.
Thank you for putting this up!
silivas was WAY overscored here.
Remember when the horse was almost an afterthought and virtually all of the vault's power came from the springboard? Man, vault has changed since 2000 almost as dramatically as bars did in the 80s.
I think Silivas peaked at age 13 when she was at the '85 Worlds. And I'm taking hair into consideration - 0.1 off for the clown wig here.
Lisa Vega i burst out laughing
L Vega I think it made her more aerodynamic.
Ahahahahahahaha.
God I hated watching tucked yurchenkos. So ugly. Glad the rules changed for vault finals.
was 1992 the first olympics that they HAD to do different vaults from two different families in event finals?

Silivas and Shushunova were the BEST in those games
AMAZING! .....VAULT SVETLANA BOGINSKAYA!!!
SVETLANA BOGINSKAYA was my crush! She's the more beautiful and graceful gymnastic woman of all times EVER! She was my platonic love in my youth, she was perfect for me. But Shushunova and Silivas were the queens in 1988!

I come here because of Lucas and Marcus
Silivas was a great all rounder and I can't fault her
Silivas, Potorac, and Shuchonova were SEVERELY overscored. It was painfully obvious. agreed
I´m not familiar with the code from that time but I guess that adding a twist on their vaults added as well a bonus on their final score, it might was a trend, don´t know... but was obvious the overscore on Silivas vaults
Connie Lightner Potorac did a double yuchenko in 1988 in a very slim vault. Why did you say is overscored? Acorda pra cuspir
The first commentator @ 5:37 was Barry Davies
The second commentator was Mitch Fenner! They always do great commentary, especially MF.
1988 must've been the year of the short mom hair
Horrible hair style
@sidthesquid74
Its true, he's had to really dumb down for coverage with christine on BBC, which is a pity.
Brandy Johnson deserved to be on that podium.
@CelloRosin I agree -- there was a definite hop. No way should she have gotten that high a score.
dont know why you got a thumbs down...your right she was crap at vault here!! her form was bad and i dont think (pardon the pun) she ever had her legs shut on meeting the vault after the R/O....either ppl are blind or they cant take a negative comment......and im not a Shushu fan either!
was this Mitch Fenner's first commentary?
ahh.. I see now. Thanks.
silivas's forms were horrendous. were the judges on crack
hell silivas was super sloppy
Shushunova ... i think should 7.950

I laugh at everyone that says the 1980’s was the “golden age” of gymnastics with its grossly inflated scoring. 🤷♂️🤦♂️
Какая досада
OMG.. that hair! lol
