    Agree with you on Empire of Pain. My first by Patrick Radden Keefe, and loved it. Top three from the year I read it. Say Nothing is now staring at me from my library…and I think of you every time I look at it!

      This is the only thing I've ever wanted from this channel - to be associated with Say Nothing ❤️

      I was pretty interested in most of the Women's Prize Longlist this year, so I was happy when this special award popped up in my feed!

    I've read Empire of Pain and Nothing to Envy. Probably the only two books in this video I'm interested in but I loved hearing your thoughts on all these dad books 💛

    Now I'm even more excited that you'll be reading Hamlet for TBR Spin 😊 also, is it bad that I actually had no idea what Empire of Pain was about? I feel like I have to read it now

    I read Empire of Pain last year (LOVED IT) and recently read Nothing to Envy after stumbling upon your review on StoryGraph. I definitely agreed with you on how approachable it is and I don't know how the ending can still read like a page turner when you more or less have an idea on the outcome of the subjects' defect journey. I wasn't particularly interested in Shakespeare and the Great War but I am convinced by your commentary on them and will be picking them up to try them out.

      Honestly when a nonfiction reads like a thriller, that's when you know you've stumbled upon something special

    I loved this video. This was a great project! I’ve read two of the six: Empire of pain and Nothing to Envy. Of the two, I think I prefer Nothing to Envy. You make a great case for the Shakespeare book. I really want to read it now. 😁

      I definitely think Nothing to Envy has such wide appeal and is so interesting. I can't wait to read more of Demick's work

    Great vlog! I loved to hear your journey through these books and so surprised by the upset but you've really sold 1599 to me, I know that one and Into the Silence were the 2 I wanted to read from the list, and been told I must read Empire of Pain, so need to do this at some point too. Cool project to do this before the winner announcement! I still haven't seen who the winner was 😂 i need to check it out!

      Please read Empire of Pain - or, if you want to read Patrick Radden Keefe, read Say Nothing. It's my favourite book of all time!!! Into the Silence is just getting better and better. Thanks for watching!! 🫡

    I loved this project and lol’d at your Beatles commentary. It always amazes me how people like to romanticize John Lennon because of his hippie era, even though he had a history of being volatile and abusive. It’s one of my pet peeves.

      It was so interesting to learn more about each of them. It sort of made me want to time travel to the 60s and witness the madness first hand

    Great, great, great video. Thanks so much. been reading non-fiction for the BookTube prize and am finally starting to get my footing. I may be a convert. Did love We Don't Know Ourselves. So love hearing about these books. Also loved the Magnificent Rebels by Wolf. It is excellent on philosophical history and so well written, sort of in the vein as 1599.

    Thank you so much for making this video. I was curious about this prize so I loved hearing your thoughts. The only one I have read is Empire of Pain and I absolutely loved it. I was also happy to see Wade Davis on the shortlist because I have loved all of the books I have read by him. I haven’t read Into the Silence yet so I need to try it soon. I’m excited to hear the winner of this prize.

    Great video! I’m interested in all but the Beatles one, but have only read (and loved) Empire of Pain so far. Did you read Super-Infinite? I studied Donne in university, but haven’t read it yet. Which video did you talk about last year’s winner? Thanks!

    • @TheBookBully
      @TheBookBully  Рік тому +1

      I think it was in my November wrap up where I talked about last year's winner. I talk about my feelings about John Donne in that video (spoiler: I hate him and I was just so baffled that a book about him won)

      @@TheBookBully Thanks for telling me where it was! I just watched it 😀I do plan to borrow it from the library at some point because I’m curious about how it could be interesting enough to win the award, but 100% agree on what a weird and out of touch choice for a winner in this day and age.

    I don't read much nonfiction, but would probably read all but the Beatles one. I have read, and loved Nothing to Envy. My wife was a big fan of Barbara Demick. I think you'd like Logavina Street if you've not already read it. Is there one of these or another nonfiction book you'd recommend for a book club of seniors in their 70-80s?

    • @TheBookBully
      @TheBookBully  Рік тому

      I now want to read all of Barbara Demick's work. She is excellent!
      Hmm what a great question. I think Nothing to Envy would be a great book club book, of course. Maybe also Bill Bryson's book One Summer. Oh and Ben MacIntyre's book The Spy and the Traitor
