  • In this quick video I show you how to do the Magic Knot Join (also known as the Fishermans Knot) for joining two pieces of yarn together securely. I personally think this is the best join for attaching 2 strands of yarn together but it DOES NOT WORK for slippery yarns. Watch the video fully for my foolproof way to test that knot will hold BEFORE you continue crocheting as the Magic Knot is not always as magic as it first seems! 😜

    Do you have a left handed version of this video? If you are left handed, you can convert ANY video on UA-cam yourself! Simply go to www.mirrorthev... and follow the instructions to mirror flip any video to convert to left handed!
    How much yarn will I need? This is a very tricky question to answer as there are so many variables! How much yarn you need will depend on which yarn you choose, the thickness of that yarn, your tension and how large you want your finished project to be. I suggest making a small sample first so you can gauge how much yarn you'll need. If making a crochet square, you can weigh your finished square to work out how much yarn it used!
    How many squares do I need for a blanket? That all depends on the size of the square you are making and how big you want your finished blanket to be! I always advise making one square first then measuring the size of it. From there you can work out how many squares you will need to get the blanket size you want 😀
    Do you have the written pattern? Yes! I have written patterns to accompany my video tutorials on my website here: www.hookedbyro... The written pattern is generally released a week or so after the video tutorial to ensure there are no errors in the video itself and to make amendments in the written version if any are found. All the written patterns are FREE to access on my website
    How can I print the pattern from your website? Do you have downloadable PDF's? Not at this time no. This may change in the future but for now, I only provide the written pattern directly on my website.
    Can you remake this video so it is slower? If the video speed is too fast, you can slow it down! 😀 See this video on exactly how: • How to Adjust the Spee...
    Why do you use American stitch terminology? I learnt using USA stitch terms, long before I even knew there was a difference between UK & US terminology! American terms are my "first language" so to speak. If you need a conversion chart, I have one here! www.hookedbyro...

    Very simple and easy tutorial Thank you. I just taught myself this technique in the last week. I've been working on a multi-color scrap yarn blanket. I cut all my scrap yarn into 12" lengths. Then my first go around I was using a square knot. Don't do this. A square knot will eventually come untied. I learned the hard way. Then I came up with a knot that is essentially a square knot with an extra loop over on the top half of the knot. This actually worked really well. I liked it because I got really fast at it and it appears to be holding yarn together just fine. But then I told myself that I must try to master the magic knot or the weaver's knot. I completely failed with the weaver's knot. Every single one pulled out after I cut the ends. So I then tried to learn the magic knot and I was determined to be successful. I finally made the grade. It just takes practice and after awhile it becomes 2nd nature. After I knot a pile of yarn together, I cut all the tails off, then I go through the entire length and test the knots one more time and then add it to the ball of yarn I am creating. I highly advise this magic knot.

    I too use the magic knot. I haven't always used it, but then found this video shortly after you loaded it, and fell in love with it. I use it when I need to change skeins of the same color and usually on ends of changing color, like for stripes, but the project I'm working on right now has no edging to hide them and can't seem how to figure out the correct amount to hide it into my work, so I'm stuck with weaving in tails.

    Thank you very much. I have watched 4 videos of different youtubers for magic knot. Even though all of you say we can cut as close to the knot as possible, I am too paranoid so Iafter magic knot I do Russian join sort of work the tail inside the yarn thingie to the remaining tails 😅
    I also would like to ask something. From the 4 videos, first one and last one (you) made both tails go over the other. Second video I watched made both tails go under the other, and the third video I have watched which also had over 4.5m views made new yarn go over the old, and then old yarn go under the new. What is the difference between going both over, both under, one over one under?.

    How is it different from a normal knot though? Just asking 😅
    For me, when I change colors, I just switch the yarn (pick up then new color and yarn over it with my hook, not the old yarn) then crochet over the ends, it works perfectly and needs absolutely no effort or tools (and it doesn't show!). I don't remember ever struggling with anything doing it.

    Just saw this video and was wondering if you use this method do you still make sure that you "join" the yarn at the end of a row, expecially when making sweaters? Or doesn't it matter?

    • @HookedbyRobin
      @HookedbyRobin  3 роки тому +1

      Hmm it's all personal preference really! I tend to just join yarn whenever it needs joining rather than wait til the end of a row BUT others prefer to join at the ends so the knot isn't seen (or, in the instance of a sweater, felt!) X

  • @CakesForTheGirls
    @CakesForTheGirls 3 роки тому +1

    would you use the magic knot when you are changing colors with in a pattern - say you are making a rainbow colored heart or something? Or would you simply keep switching colors and leaving the ends hanging and then weave them in? Maybe a better way to ask this is would you only join the yarn when you are switching skeins or could this be used for small color changes within a pattern?

    • @HookedbyRobin
      @HookedbyRobin  3 роки тому +1

      You can do either really! If I am working with a gradient yarn (like a rainbow one) I join the yarn, leave the tails and weave in after because that gives me the most precise control BUT I know plenty of people find it really easy to use the Magic Knot in the same precise way so it's personal preference really! No right or wrong way to do things 🙂
