Magic Knot for Joining Yarn (Fisherman's Knot)

- In this quick video I show you how to do the Magic Knot Join (also known as the Fishermans Knot) for joining two pieces of yarn together securely. I personally think this is the best join for attaching 2 strands of yarn together but it DOES NOT WORK for slippery yarns. Watch the video fully for my foolproof way to test that knot will hold BEFORE you continue crocheting as the Magic Knot is not always as magic as it first seems! 😜

Do you have a left handed version of this video? If you are left handed, you can convert ANY video on UA-cam yourself! Simply go to www.mirrorthev... and follow the instructions to mirror flip any video to convert to left handed!
How much yarn will I need? This is a very tricky question to answer as there are so many variables! How much yarn you need will depend on which yarn you choose, the thickness of that yarn, your tension and how large you want your finished project to be. I suggest making a small sample first so you can gauge how much yarn you'll need. If making a crochet square, you can weigh your finished square to work out how much yarn it used!
How many squares do I need for a blanket? That all depends on the size of the square you are making and how big you want your finished blanket to be! I always advise making one square first then measuring the size of it. From there you can work out how many squares you will need to get the blanket size you want 😀
Do you have the written pattern? Yes! I have written patterns to accompany my video tutorials on my website here: www.hookedbyro... The written pattern is generally released a week or so after the video tutorial to ensure there are no errors in the video itself and to make amendments in the written version if any are found. All the written patterns are FREE to access on my website
How can I print the pattern from your website? Do you have downloadable PDF's? Not at this time no. This may change in the future but for now, I only provide the written pattern directly on my website.
Can you remake this video so it is slower? If the video speed is too fast, you can slow it down! 😀 See this video on exactly how: • How to Adjust the Spee...
Why do you use American stitch terminology? I learnt using USA stitch terms, long before I even knew there was a difference between UK & US terminology! American terms are my "first language" so to speak. If you need a conversion chart, I have one here! www.hookedbyro...

This is amazing! I don't know how I've been crocheting for years and didn't know this exsisted!!! Mind blown 🤯
I really like your advice about tugging on the magic knot to make sure its secure before going ahead.
Thanks a bunch!
You are so welcome!😃
GENIUS!!!!! thank you so much!!! This will really come in handy when I start my scrap yarn blanket soon!! love this.
How have I walked the planet this long without knowing this GOLDEN tip?
Thank you so very much ❣️ Hope you had a lovely weekend❣️🤗💕
Wonderful, have to remember that. Thanks for sharing. Sunny greetings from Switzerland🌻🌺
You are very welcome!
LOVE the magic knot! been using it on my scrap yarn blanket and it works fantastic!
Yay! I’m glad it helps Lauri.😃🧶
Thanks! I’ve been doing this method for years. I think the knot came undone once when I pulled on it. I just started over and it stayed. Yes, they are very secure.
Very simple and easy tutorial Thank you. I just taught myself this technique in the last week. I've been working on a multi-color scrap yarn blanket. I cut all my scrap yarn into 12" lengths. Then my first go around I was using a square knot. Don't do this. A square knot will eventually come untied. I learned the hard way. Then I came up with a knot that is essentially a square knot with an extra loop over on the top half of the knot. This actually worked really well. I liked it because I got really fast at it and it appears to be holding yarn together just fine. But then I told myself that I must try to master the magic knot or the weaver's knot. I completely failed with the weaver's knot. Every single one pulled out after I cut the ends. So I then tried to learn the magic knot and I was determined to be successful. I finally made the grade. It just takes practice and after awhile it becomes 2nd nature. After I knot a pile of yarn together, I cut all the tails off, then I go through the entire length and test the knots one more time and then add it to the ball of yarn I am creating. I highly advise this magic knot.
Looks very strong Robin, thanks 👍
Thank you for the tutorial on the magic knot!!
I love your scrap blanket. It is so pretty!!!!! And I love the beginning!!! I'm going to make one like yours. Thanks for sharing!!!
I always use this method. Thank you.
Thanks Robin. That’s great. I’ll definitely go for the magic😍
Thank you Robin, love your videos!!
Thank you so much Bonny!🥰
Thank you for sharing, I’m knitting a blanket at the minute so definitely going to try this to join my yarn 👍
I always use this method it's the best , thank you for your great demonstration 😊Amanda xx
Love the magic knot
Same. Been using this for many years. Only knot I will use.
Thanks for this tip!!!!🧶🧶🧶😊
Thanks for this video i have been wanting to learn this for awhile and u make it so simple /easy to do. 🙂
I also love this knot never had one come undone yet
Neve use but I will try it. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, Robin! Great attention to detail😌.
This is very helpful, thank you.
Thank you Misty, I’m glad it helps! 😃🧶
Good tips. Thank you! Proceeding to do a waffle stitch blanket.
Thank you so much Nicole, I’m glad it helps.😃
Thanks for demonstrating how to do this. I had tried it before but some came apart afterwards and had to redo the project.
My pleasure Diane, I am glad it helps.😀🧶
I too use the magic knot. I haven't always used it, but then found this video shortly after you loaded it, and fell in love with it. I use it when I need to change skeins of the same color and usually on ends of changing color, like for stripes, but the project I'm working on right now has no edging to hide them and can't seem how to figure out the correct amount to hide it into my work, so I'm stuck with weaving in tails.
Fabulous! Thank you for this.
You’re welcome Hayley!😃🧶
It's good and easy.
Hoi Robin. I always do the magic knot hen I am doing things with yarn.
I have never had one that it not work. Greetings karin from the Netherlands and tanks to you I am adicted to the cord-maker. Love the little machine. To bad that there is not one for bigger yarn.
Perfect. Thank you
You’re amazing. Thank you ❤🇺🇸
Thank you so much Pam! 😃🥰
I respect this knot, but I am going with the Russian Join from now on. I love how that looks and stays secure with no knot at all. Cynthia
Thank you very much. I have watched 4 videos of different youtubers for magic knot. Even though all of you say we can cut as close to the knot as possible, I am too paranoid so Iafter magic knot I do Russian join sort of work the tail inside the yarn thingie to the remaining tails 😅
I also would like to ask something. From the 4 videos, first one and last one (you) made both tails go over the other. Second video I watched made both tails go under the other, and the third video I have watched which also had over 4.5m views made new yarn go over the old, and then old yarn go under the new. What is the difference between going both over, both under, one over one under?.
I also use this method, it's great 👍
Thank you.
Ur scissors is very pretty n magic knot is also work for me.
I have never seen this knot either. Thank you!
I use the Magic Knot all the time and you are right , slippery yarns don't hold to good . I use the Russian join for them or thin yarns .
I used to use the russian join a lot but have gotten lazy these days 😂
Wow thanks
It’s my go to way to join yarn!!! 😘
Thank you so much!!! That will come in VERY handy as I'm always joining yarns!!! Thank you again!!!💜
Have a blessed day!!!
I use this knot often :)
Thank you for this video, but a plus, for me, is that those two colorw together are my absolute favorite!!!
Love the magic knot!! For caron simply soft yarn, should I use the Russian join?
Personally I would because the caron simply soft can be a bit of a slippery one!
@@HookedbyRobin Thank you! It's so nice that you respond so quickly! I'll post my next blanket using the caron simply soft in a couple months after I finish my current waffle stitch project!
I look forward to seeing it!😃
Thanks for sharing
Thanks 😊
🥰🤗
Thank you 🙏 I forgot about the magic knot
I’m so glad it helps.😃🧶
Thanks /robin
You’re welcome Elaine, I hope it helped.😃
Thank you! ❤
I always use a surgeons knot I learnt how to do it when I was Learning to bead and also works on yarn.
Ooh I'll have to look that one up!
Thank you!
You’re welcome!🧶
How is it different from a normal knot though? Just asking 😅
For me, when I change colors, I just switch the yarn (pick up then new color and yarn over it with my hook, not the old yarn) then crochet over the ends, it works perfectly and needs absolutely no effort or tools (and it doesn't show!). I don't remember ever struggling with anything doing it.
Thanks for this, what do you recommend for slippery yarns?
I don't join them as such, I add them in as if I were changing colour and weave in the end instead (very tedious and boring therefore I rarely use slippery yarns 😂)
SOME times, adding an extra simple knot after the first are pulled together works OK for slippery yarns.... you just have to try and see :)
The surgeons knot works for slippery yarn as Carol Ashworth stated .
That is the way I do mine. I have never had a problem with the yarn slipping or breaking.
Cool, will have to remember that lol!
Just saw this video and was wondering if you use this method do you still make sure that you "join" the yarn at the end of a row, expecially when making sweaters? Or doesn't it matter?
Hmm it's all personal preference really! I tend to just join yarn whenever it needs joining rather than wait til the end of a row BUT others prefer to join at the ends so the knot isn't seen (or, in the instance of a sweater, felt!) X
would you use the magic knot when you are changing colors with in a pattern - say you are making a rainbow colored heart or something? Or would you simply keep switching colors and leaving the ends hanging and then weave them in? Maybe a better way to ask this is would you only join the yarn when you are switching skeins or could this be used for small color changes within a pattern?
You can do either really! If I am working with a gradient yarn (like a rainbow one) I join the yarn, leave the tails and weave in after because that gives me the most precise control BUT I know plenty of people find it really easy to use the Magic Knot in the same precise way so it's personal preference really! No right or wrong way to do things 🙂
I was just questioning myself if this was the best join method. I think I have my answer now.
Not me crocheting for like 20 years and not knowing this trick!
🥰🧶
🥳
😃🥰
I use this method but the only thing I don't like is how big of a knot it leaves. It stands out in the finished product. No matter how tight I pull it together...your left with a fair sized knot.
Like you said, only slippery yarns come undone!

🥰🧶
Have been use it for a few month now and have found that it dose not come undone.
I have had magic knots come undone or even loosen after I finished a blanket then I had a weird loosen stitch and now I'm worried about the whole thing coming apart .
Hmm I always give an extra tug on the yarn after I've trimmed the knot to make sure it'll hold as sometimes they look like they're knotted when they're not (I've had that happen to me before in the past! Very frustrating!)
Another name for this knot is "water knot". (Just in case you ever hear this term used.)
Is this a square knot?
Ah no, slightly different to a square knot :-)
Thank you, Robin ! I've never used a square knot for my yarn, and I'll know not to now.
@@genmama1955 a square knot would probably work too! Just make sure you tug the life out of it to check it's holding 😃
Hooked by Robin thanks !
Not a fan of knots in things that I wear. Have tried this, can still feel the knot in the finished work. Yuck. Much prefer the Russian Join were you weave back through the yarn itself.
