The Most Legendary Fuzz Pedal You Don’t Know (Rush Pepbox)

- For this week’s episode, we are super pumped to sit down with Lucy Rush, entrepreneur and daughter of pedal-builder Pepe Rush. Pepe Rush is the first pedal maker to create a distortion pedal in the United Kingdom, the Rush PepBox, which was released in 1965. You can think of Pepe as the British Ivor Arbiter and/or Revis Hobbs. He was a brilliant inventor, and it was a pleasure to talk about his work with Lucy.
*June 21, 2021 CORRECTION*
Since the release of the “Rush PepBox” JHS Show episode, we have found a few corrections: 1.) The Rush PepBox photograph at the 5:40 mark in the video is actually an image of a counterfeit PepBox. Ouch. 2.) The red 'Fuzzy' pedals mentioned in this interview have no connection to Pepe Rush whatsoever, and don't have any direct similarities to the PepBox other than the attack control, which is also labelled 'Pep'.
HUGE thank you to our Patrons who make episodes like this possible! With your support we were able to travel to England in early 2020 for this interview and more! If you want to be a part of helping us preserve stories like these head on over to / thejhsshow .

This interview was so lovely to watch. Im one of Pepe’s granddaughters and it makes me so proud to see his hard-work being carried on by my auntie. He had such a passion for his work.We all miss my grandad so much he was truly an amazing grandfather and such a kind soul.
Hello! Thanks so much for watching. It was wonderful to be able to sit down with your aunt. She was so kind and so gracious with us. It must run in the family! It's an honor to meet you, even if digitally :)
@Gupster 23 Haha I’ve never really thought about it like that . I’ve always been very proud of his work but only as I’ve gotten older realised the impact he has had :)
Kool! 😎👍
You’re awesome
This Video, is so Important for the Pedal Szene. After this Video, i ride, with Lucy. I don't know bevor, I don't know that the Rush Box Existenz . 🙏@JoshScott , That is so Important, for me. 🙏🙏🙏👌😻🥰🥳🤓
Love that last line she said, “I never feel closer to my dad than when I have a soldering iron in my hand.” Truly special.
Crushed me.
I'm not cryin'. Nope, I'm not...
Exactly the reason why I love working on my old cars. It's like I'm hanging out with Grandpa again.
well said bud
The family that solders together, stays together.
Josh's love for the pedal and its history is exceeded only by how gently he conducted this interview. Bravo.
Wholeheartedly, agree…🎸👨🏼⚕️🎸. 🫶✌️♾️. 🎄🎅🏻🎅🏻🎄
Well, she admitted her first purchase was a Limp Bizkit album so we definitely know she's honest.
lol- mine too, significant other,,,ah it was a different time and we were young
Mine was that Green Jello(Jelly) record with the Three Little Pigs.
Heck I found the video on here for my little daughter, she thought it was funny.
mine was Green Day dookie
Mine was Rob Zombie’s The Sinister Urge.
dont cry single, guns n roses, when i was about 7 or 8 years old lol. i accidentally smashed the vinyl and ironically cried that night, i loved that record. think mum and dad were happy deep down though, i f*cking rinsed that song over and over! if i was listening to fred durst repeatedly i think my dad would have smashed it for me lol.
Your shows do not get better than this. I was hanging on every word. What a positive vibe!!! Having Lucy put this Fuzz back into production is killer!
Couldn’t agree more.
"I have a pedal collection". Perhaps my favorite understatement of all time. This was a really beautiful episode. Thanks Josh and team.
:)
I can only imagine the sales bump for her after this. Awesomeness.
so deserved!
@@davidpggarrett
Much so. 🙂
Hopefully
The 6 on Reverb already disappeared after sitting for months..
She made me smile the whole way through. It was a joy to hear her father's story from her voice and then for her to tell her story. That's the best history. Thanks, Josh and the JHS crew for this heartwarming history. Still smiling!
This is the first time I’ve cried watching one of your shows. I guess because I have four daughters..I hope Lucy reverse engineers other products and gets a full line going. She deserves every success with all her hard work keeping her dad’s tradition and memory alive.
Thanks Josh
And Lucy has the genuine RAF-aircraft-wheel-chock-grade AVOmeter vintage test gear to go with the genuine vintage pedals! I haven't seen one of those for decades. Thank you for bringing us this bit of history.
Dang Josh this interview has no business being this good, this was really special.
It was so good to sit with her and talk about the history of this pedal. It was definitely very special and one that won't be easily forgotten.
Another legendary fuzz we don't know about, it Fran Blanche's reissue of the EH Big Muff which is what everyone uses now a day.
An episode of Frantone would be really cool.
Love the mini-documentarie side of the channels, and I also enjoy the demos very much.
Agree
Frantone The Sweet got me into big Muffs!
Frantone is SO underrated
@@eerbrev It's also made of unubtanium :)
I've been trolling reverb forever and waiting for a couple of the rarer Frantone pedals to pop up. Hopefully I will find what I'm looking for before JHS does an episode on Fran and drives the price of Frantone pedals into the stratosphere lol. Especially since she has indicated on her FranLab youtube channel that it's unlikely that new Frantone pedals will ever be produced again.
Just ordered a PepBox. Thanks for putting this video together, Josh and Lucy!
Nice!!
Way to go Josh, you really gave her extra pride in her father and nothing can put a price on that!!!
I received my PepBox weeks ago and THIS PEDAL IS AWESOME. It is one of those pedals that inspires you as you play it so you can't stop playing it. If you are a fuzz freak like me then I urge you to pick one of these up for your collection. You'll love it.
We had "work experience" in Louisiana schools in the US back in the 1990s. It was called DECA. You went to school for half a day and then went to work for half a day. You got work experience and also got the required credits for school, as well.
Luckily, I didn't have to do that when I was in Grade 12. I already had enough credits that I only had to go to school for 2 classes for the entire year. So I got to school at 840am and left at 1140am to go home. It was GREAT! I didn't have to be up early for school at 7am and I got to come home at lunch 😁
Came for some vintage fuzz, did not expect to get punched in the feels by a beautiful father-daughter story.
Gotta love the humanity behind the machines. And then these machines bring out human expression.
I really like how it has more buzz than crunch. It might just be how Josh is using it, but it’s less gain, more buzz sound to it is amazing. A proper fuzz. Instead of sounding like a beehive it sounds more like one really big bee.
No pretenses, just a real person doing something they believe in for all the right reasons.
I have two daughters (5 and 3 1/2) so this had a whole other level for me. Josh, you get it. Thanks for the story, history, and tones.
"Luckily my metalworkers cool" LOL Charming interview shining in a wasteland of corporate promotions, void of heart and soul. That fuzz sounds fully zooted too, great stuff! Good on you Lucy and Josh! :)
Thank you so much for putting this up. It’s not just an important part of pedal history but a heartwarming story about a father and daughter relationship.
What a lovely, warm story - and what a lovely, warm woman - she's proud of her dad and she should be proud of herself. Thank you, Josh.
I became a member of AVRevue forum years back, and Pepe was always in a stern discussion with members over many topics, it got him removed as a member many times but back he would come under another name :) i spotted him every time his demeanor never changed, He Emailed me asking how the hell did i know it was him lol, we became friends and would Email each other for some years found him to be a very likable chap who loved to wind up folk ! he informed me that he and Lucy had begun to remake the fuzz pedal, then all of a sudden Emails stopped, was so saddened to find he had passed on, the editor of the forum mailed me thanking me for keeping Pepe in check, told him nothing to do with me Pepe was a great character, miss our conversations, rest mate !
This was a great interview. Love the idea of electronics as a multi-generational craft. It's a beautiful thing to see in a world that changes so fast.
This video is the absolute perfect example of why the JHS Show is great. Behind every iconic pedal is a person or a small team of people. With smaller builders the story is often still around within the family rather than lost in years of corporate shuffling, but sometimes they don’t necessarily have the platform to get their story told.
I’m a pedal addict but also love hearing the stories behind this stuff, so this is A+ content for me.
I usually don’t like spending that much on a fuzz box but this makes me really want to own such a great piece of history related to the greatest guitar effect. Pepe seemed like a great guy and Lucy seems similarly awesome I doubt there could be a more worthy successor to his legacy.
And it doesn’t hurt that the Pep Box sounds INCREDIBLE.
I totally agree it's so nice something handed down to her from her dad and maybe she will hand it down to her children and it can carry on for years to come
She should adopt Nick and use him to build the Pep Boxes for her.
I think just hiring him would also work.
@@JeighNeither not the same thing, though. it takes a level of commitment
She could split custody with Josh, One supposes🤷
Her Father truly isn't gone with her picking up his dream and running with it. Wish Lucy all the very best in her endeavors.
Just when I thought your channel couldn’t get any better, you pull out this. I love the history, the nerd detail, and the easy way you interview. Shows that pedal histories can be deeply personal too. Amazing work (again).
That was extraordinary! Best episode so far… and there have been some belters. Thank you.
Aces. Lucy's story and work are wonderful. A beautiful piece for Father's Day as well.
This if probably my favorite episode. I love that your documenting and showing the world these amazingly powerful and important stories. It's more than pedals...it's people. Keep it up!
Such a touching story, thanks for sharing! I love this fuzz ❤️
what a wonderful video! So great to see people like Lucy keeping the history alive, quite literally. I hope to see that preamp and limiter come out soon, I'd buy the hell out of that
I love that this channel is helping preserve and even sometimes discovering gear history.
Edit: Damn, that hit closer to home than I thought it would.
Awesome. I loved all the graphics that went along with the jams in this episode. It really added to an already great episode and shows a progression in the videos you guys are producing
Josh your knowledge and quest for knowledge is amazing and we are the the ones to benefit from it. This in an amazing interview. Thank you both.
This was a beautiful episode. Thank you Josh for getting it. It’s about people, not objects. Great episode!
This interview got better the longer it went on. Josh is a great interviewer and Lucy's and her father's stories are amazing and I can't see any other way they would have reached an audience. Thank you, JHS.
This is such a beautiful video! It made me tear up to see how much this lady cares about her Dad and his legacy. It makes it even better that the Pep Box sounds so great, really unique! :)
Thank you Josh and JHS team for your valuable work on the history of pedals and packaging it so nicely for us all. Echo other comments that within this history there are amazing human stories at the core, and they are so inspiring.
This interview is amazing her dad would be so proud.. that women is a straight bad ass and shes single handedly doing something that I believe no ones else can even do if they tried... shes producing vintage rock history creating a pedal someone can buy and use allowing them to do exactly what the rock gods of yesteryear did... to know that the RUSH PEP BOX is still made by the inventor's daughter's own hands and hasn't become some mystical unobtainable mythical object like most pedals from that era have become is simply amazing...
Great stuff! You're an awesome interviewer, you have a such a softness and authenticity to you - it's infectious!
Absolutely amazing and probably my favourite video you lot made so far. After knowing more about her I absolutely need to get one.
Thank you.
Great content and a fascinating story and great to see something nearly lost be brought back with total integrity.
Absolutely brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing this story!
Great interview- thanks for giving her space to share that story.
Wow...I had no idea about this pedal or the story behind it. This is one of the best videos I've seen on this channel - thank you.
Damn this channel keeps getting better! What a beautiful story, brilliantly produced video and now I want one of these pedals 😬
This is an amazing episode! Really cool that Lucy has taken the torch and continues to make this how it was built originally back how it was first designed \m/
Love your content and pedals Josh! Thanks for educating us on topics like this!❤️
Fantastic! Great bit of pedal history and Lucy's love and dedication clearly show. Great episode.
Thank you Josh, for the wealth of knowledge that you both shared. This is one of my favorite episodes thus far! I love the history lesson, and it really hit home with how close she is with her dad; because, my dad and I are very close. He is in poor health he has Parkinson’s and dementia. This was a beautiful episode and one of my favorites.
Enjoyed every second of it. Pleasure to watch. Thank you.
Awesome interview and a big thanks to Lucy!
What a great episode ! Thanks for making it!
The level of production that goes into these makes them so pleasant to watch, even for someone that might not be into gear, and that's super cool. Great job to the whole crew.
Thanks!
Thanks, Josh. This was what I needed on Father’s Day.
Absolutely amazing story. The connection between Lucy and her dad is as interesting as it is heartwarming. What a beautiful way to carry on the legacy!
Super cool. I'm so glad you deep dive into the history of this stuff
I can’t believe I missed this interview! What a wonderful interview. Thank you.
Josh. Your a pedal hero. I know I'm a pedal freak but you sir, , are off the hook. Write a book one day, I'd buy it. Here I sit, swapping resistor and cap values for my weird ass mutant drive pedal (*name in progress, though that's not bad) and I hope I make the grade.
Lucy is awesome. Her dad is proud as it gets wherever he is.
I love these interviews and history deep dives so much
My Patreon budget is rather low but holy hell, every single video like this is riveting material. Some of the best music interviews period. These are important(and the other videos are fantastic too)
Man, what an awesome episode. Some of the best content on UA-cam
It’s Father’s Day tomorrow in the UK and I’m sitting here crying my eyes out… beautiful story and a beautiful episode.
An excellent interview. Well done to capture this story, Mr. Smith. Priceless.
I think I actually shed a tear... an emotional story and I'm so happy the daughter is continuing on the legacy!
So glad to hear this story! A piece of history I never thought I would have a chance of owning might be mine one day!
Great story. I grew up in England in the ‘50’s and 60’s, and so many people were inventing interesting things at home in their garden workshops, which we called “sheds” (still do), and sometimes they became available on the open market like the pedal in the video.
Excellent interview, excellent fuzz...and a props to Josh for his playing, really highlighting this fuzz pedal to great effect.
Very sweet. 👍🍭
Great interview, Lucy shows such passion for the PepBox, and love for her dad.
Great episode. Love her and the whole family vibe rings true. Thanks for this.
That’s what it’s all about people . So cool that she’s carrying on her dad’s trade . I love to hear stories like this . A regular guy makes something that he’s proud of. He will not sacrifice quality and integrity . Passing the trade on to a child and the child continues to do it like dad did .
WOW!!!! I was glued to this episode. Such an amazing insight into the history of this pedal. This could be my favourite JHS show ever!!!.
Also note- She said 'Solder' none of this 'Sodder' Nonsense. She's English, speaking English in England. You know it's the right thing to do.
Once again, thanks for putting this together.
Yeah, it was so great being with her. Lucy is so sweet and wonderful to talk with. It was a privilege.
Living history. What a wonderful interview.
Excellent. Very well done! That was very nice, interesting, and historical. Thank you Josh.
I had no clue what a great interviewer Josh is! He has a gift for making her comfortable, asking good questions, then letting her talk while he listens. 👍
Great expressive tone, with nuance. Really sounds fantastic. Gotta get one. Great interview, Josh. Thank you.
Such an interesting and moving story. thanks for sharing it with us.
Holly cow. It's fantastic to see you guys + Reverb help promote a brand like hers. It makes me wonder if other brands like Sweet Sound and Buffalo Fx could be rescued by companies like JHS who could build and sell the pedals under a license.
That last jam had some fabulous tones and the playing had such an authentic sixties buzz I was transported back to my teenage garage band days. Beautiful!
You went above and beyond in this video. Really well done!!!!!
This video made me feel real good. Lucy thanks for sharing
This cleans up into the most perfect gritty OD I've ever heard! Very nice!
Incredible episode and interview Josh and fantastic animations Nick
Excellent episode! It is wonderful to see her fathers spirit alive in her. Josh, you are becoming the Ken Burns of the pedal world.
What a beautiful Father’s Day tribute this episode turned out to be. Cheers.
Superb episode. I wish her all the good fortune in the world.
Your such a good guy josh, that was a great interview thanks mate from England.
Great, great interview. Love the history with the fuzz/bender pedals.
Absolutely brilliant interview about a brilliant pedal.
I really like this interview format.
Absolutely fascinating.
beautiful one this one...the love for pedals radiates...thank you
Well, I already knew about these and they were high on my list. As usual, Josh comes along generously sharing the knowledge. Thanks for the price bump, say all the folks selling one, Thanks, too, I say, pushing the scheduled affordability time back another three to five months.
I love the goofy episodes and the fantastic levels of sarcasm but, this is one of the best shows! Great stuff and a really great story! I’m ordering a pedal!
A beautiful tribute to a lovely family. Kudos!
Congratulations on an excellent interview. I’m not a pedal person so I must admit I was surprised at how interesting this was. Great job and great subject.
Fantastic interview Josh, just fantastic!
This made my day.
Thank you.
