The Most Legendary Fuzz Pedal You Don’t Know (Rush Pepbox)

  • For this week’s episode, we are super pumped to sit down with Lucy Rush, entrepreneur and daughter of pedal-builder Pepe Rush. Pepe Rush is the first pedal maker to create a distortion pedal in the United Kingdom, the Rush PepBox, which was released in 1965. You can think of Pepe as the British Ivor Arbiter and/or Revis Hobbs. He was a brilliant inventor, and it was a pleasure to talk about his work with Lucy.
    *June 21, 2021 CORRECTION*
Since the release of the “Rush PepBox” JHS Show episode, we have found a few corrections: 1.) The Rush PepBox photograph at the 5:40 mark in the video is actually an image of a counterfeit PepBox. Ouch. 2.) The red 'Fuzzy' pedals mentioned in this interview have no connection to Pepe Rush whatsoever, and don't have any direct similarities to the PepBox other than the attack control, which is also labelled 'Pep'.

We had "work experience" in Louisiana schools in the US back in the 1990s. It was called DECA. You went to school for half a day and then went to work for half a day. You got work experience and also got the required credits for school, as well.
Luckily, I didn't have to do that when I was in Grade 12. I already had enough credits that I only had to go to school for 2 classes for the entire year. So I got to school at 840am and left at 1140am to go home. It was GREAT! I didn't have to be up early for school at 7am and I got to come home at lunch 😁

This video is the absolute perfect example of why the JHS Show is great. Behind every iconic pedal is a person or a small team of people. With smaller builders the story is often still around within the family rather than lost in years of corporate shuffling, but sometimes they don’t necessarily have the platform to get their story told.
I’m a pedal addict but also love hearing the stories behind this stuff, so this is A+ content for me.
I usually don’t like spending that much on a fuzz box but this makes me really want to own such a great piece of history related to the greatest guitar effect. Pepe seemed like a great guy and Lucy seems similarly awesome I doubt there could be a more worthy successor to his legacy.
And it doesn’t hurt that the Pep Box sounds INCREDIBLE.

Well, I already knew about these and they were high on my list. As usual, Josh comes along generously sharing the knowledge. Thanks for the price bump, say all the folks selling one, Thanks, too, I say, pushing the scheduled affordability time back another three to five months.
