Here's another special VGM DJ SET episode, this time featuring the amazing music Soichi Terada made for the Ape Escape franchise, the series that got hunderd of thousands of kids into Jungle and Drum and Bass when they were just expecting to have some Dulashock action. In this mix, I explore the soundtracks from every game Soichi worked on, from Ape Escape to Ape Escape 3 to obscure spin-offs like Pumped and Primed and Million Monkeys.

Also thanks to Nick Dwyer for letting me quote his interview with Soichi Terada! Pls check out the awesome Digging in the Carts show from Red Bull Radio - www.mixcloud.c...
Tell ya the truth, while doing my research for my interview, I found Nick's interview so good that I just decided to lean on it and not ask Terada-san some of those question NIck had already asked cause my interview was too long already haha.

Yo everyone, how's everything? My name is ✨dedeco✨ and this is my VIDEO GAME MUSIC DJ SET (or VGM DJ SET please algorithm show these videos when people search for VGM DJ SET. VGM is the same as video game music i promise) series! It is a series where I dig and select only the hottest tracks from (mostly) retro videogames (mainly ps1 and ps2 eras) and then I perform them live using my cheap ass dj controller and virtual dj 7 lol
I've been a dance music producer and DJ for a long time, so these are all video game OSTs that could possibly tear clubs up (we will get some extra chill vibes eventually tho). I want to make something that will show electronic music enthusiasts just how cool and important for dance music history video game soundtracks are!!!
I want to keep this series as legit as possible, so there won't be any remixes over here (specially no EDM mixes lol). Eventually there will be club edits from video game OSTs that I make myself. Those edits will keep all of the original tracks's essences, but will add a couple elements (most of the time just a kick drum) to make them more club-ready. If you would like to snatch those edits head over to my Patreon maybe 👀
The series also features cool visuals that I painstakingly edit out here to make the videos interesting and cool to watch all the way through cause DID YOU KNOW THAT THE AVERAGE HUMAN BEING HAS A SHORTER ATTENTION SPAM THAN A GOLDFISH NOWADAYS THERE ARE LIKE ACTUAL STUDIES ABOUT IT THAT IS CRAZY MAN
VGM dj set ooh VGM i love VGM MIXES

This might sound kind of silly, but this video feels like such a monumental achievement. The flavor from Terada san, the INSANE set you perform... You got all these trashbags on YT dropping content like, "let me tell you why I think Gears of War is SOOO underrated" and you're out here making something that feels like a part of video game history. SO MUCH LOVE, DEDECO!

You masterfully mixed together all the best songs and more, put together the entire bg visuals, and dished out a heartwarming interview. The ending had me in tears too. I didn’t know someone else loved ape escape music as much as me until I discovered this.

09:30. This part here; where Terada-san explains that he didn't have the clasic jungle samples so he just spead up breakbeat tracks... THAT is what made his iconic sound. He was just doing that out of necessity of what he had. And to think, we're here trying to imitate it... Sheesh. That's kind of inspiring.
Don't try to BE someone else, just use what you have and make it work. Then you'll have YOUR own iconic sound. Maybe some things won't sound as good, but others will sound simply amazing.

You're as much of a hero as Terada imo. While we may have played these games as kids, the games and their music's influence on us may potentially go unrecognized. But with your mixes you bring that to the forefront. It's hard to put into words.... but it's like being reunited with a toy from your childhood that you thought you didn't want anymore but you really regretted getting rid of.

Ikr. This was just one random game I played on PS1 as a kid, and it takes a huge place up in my memories of early gaming. This game hit many good notes, area designs, creativity in enemy patterns along with the player and the enemies usage of tools (curse the UFO's lolol). and ofc, the music. the music. Literally defining a musical taste as a young kid. Terada-san, you are goated ^^

re: let you know in comments, I enjoyed post @30:00, "please turn up the volume" request, level extremely loud engaged, and enjoyed.
I think your bridging of game and club vibes is really cool and people LOVE this scene clash.
Near me, in the North of England, both Studio Liverpool, with WipeOut and Reflections (in Gateshead) with Driver, had pure dope sounds because the folk who made them were heavy into going out on the town to listen to music, and after folk like us (in the 1990s) would game until the wee hours, assisted by many varied substances, coffee, tabs, kebabs, etc...., with the decks on for many games, but I could run the MegaDrive, Dreamcast and PS1 thru the house soundsystem for canny tracks, stage 2 dodonpachi, GT2 menus, but not race music lol
I'm rambling but the craic is good. I love your music and it's always on when I'm gaming these days. Much love.

This is amazing holy shit thank you, things like this keep the Ape Escape community alive. I saw and met Soichi Terada last month when he was performing at the Jazz Cafe in London. Genuinely one of the kindest smiliest people I’ve ever met.

Primordial Ooze is one of my favorite tracks, it gives me such nostalgia. But the way you mixed in Freeze Continent 2's bells motifs has elevated the track to a whole new level, it's crazy how well you made them complement eachother.

I started listening to 90s/00s vgm I think about 2 years ago after looking for something that was less boring than lo-fi and with a bit more variety than halo music I listen to to get work done. VGM music hits the spots and helps me stay focused while doing work, these sets are amazing and I don't think I appreciated the music at the time when I used to play some of these games. Maybe because dnb and garage was so common in the uk. That time period imho is the best era of the past 50 years. This is culture

Ape Escape and its music were a very intimate part of my childhood. Seeing someone else have such appreciation for its musical style along other jungle and dnb classics from that era is a wonderful breath of fresh air. Instant sub, and I hope to see more. You rock brother!
