Queenan dying was the tip of the iceberg, but after what happened to Billy, he had to make the whole situation right and still deliver some justice at the end of the day.
I think Queenan's death *was* the iceberg. Queenan was like a father to Dignam, obvious huge respect between them. Avenging Billy along with Queenan was just icing on the cake.
This is literally the easiest character for him to play. He did a really good job, but it was literally just him playing his version of the cops that arrested him dozens of time in his youth.
There was an idea for a spin-off with Dignam set as the lead character, going against a corrupt politician played by Robert De Niro. But it fell through. Kinda glad it did, because Dignam's better in a supporting role.
There’s no guarantee that he would have walked out of the sequel alive. I mean, they could have brought him and Baldwin back. Bring in Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Kurt Russell, Robert De Nero, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino, then have them all get killed in violent ways. Call it Departed 2 Pathway to hell.

yeah, but he was great in Ted, watching him playing tthe opposite was refreshing, but yeah, my two fav Wahlberg characters are Digman, and David from the movie "Fear"
You should be giving Damon praise for this role. He was able to play the character so well that we, as the audience, were convinced that Sullivan was just a pure shithole (and credit obviously goes to the writers too). You had a problem with the character, not the actor.
Martin Sheen trying not to laugh when Mark Wahlberg says the word "cunts". 😂 Also, I heard that Wahlberg took his inspiration for this role from the numerous cops who arrested and booked him multiple times during his days as a teenage street punk in Boston.
Good editing, it puts a tight, clean frame around Dignam's character. His presence seemed almost incidental at the start of the film, but with each scene his significance and impact gathered and he closed the book like a hammer!
The creators of "The Other Guys" definitely watched The Departed and decided this character needed his own movie lol. Mark plays essentially the same angry for no reason macho tough guy detective

He insults everybody. Those who push back earn his respect. At least that's the vibe I got from that performance. Queenan pushed back - that is why Dingham is so loyal to him.
Seeing these scenes next to one another, it makes Mark's realization of Matt being the rat that much better. He gave Leo such a hard time when he was telling the truth and was a genuine good guy. How he treats Matt vs Leo adds to his guilt in the end.
Dignam really was Costigans best friend. He did nothing but shit on him verbally, But his actions were always nothing but above and beyond. He handed in his papers for him, and even avenged him. Costigan was long gone, Never could have known. Thats a true man of integrity, And thats the ideal lawman.
