    It felt good to hear that rant. I had a lot of the same thoughts but felt weird because I wasn't sure if anyone agreed with me, as I didn't actually see all that much negativity about this episode initially. The more time passes the more I'm seeing people having similar sentiments to what you said however. Now that it's been a day and excitement calmed down looks like a lot of people thought this was too rushed

    Hearing that take away from your anime only friend and seeing other various misinterpretations has locked it in for me. This episode failed in its mission statement as "The Story of Rudeus Greyrat."
    I'm going to copypasta my thoughts from the discussions I've had over on reddit:
    I have been defending this show's decisions when cutting content for ages now. However, I'm now feeling steadily more betrayed the more I learn about the production decisions behind these directing choices.
    Studio Bind did their job with aplomb. What we received is an efficiently paced, creatively edited, and competently scripted episode that condenses extraordinarily dense material into far too short a runtime yet still delivers a smooth viewing experience to the viewer. It is not a bad episode as I have yet to see one that I would consider genuinely awful and I will defend to the death the staff that has worked so hard to bring the world of Mushoku Tensei to life on the screen. It is, however, thematically *shallow* in comparison to the source material pertaining to Rudy's development...
    I'm just gonna say it bluntly: Rifujin-sensei is entirely responsible for undercutting the beating heart of not only this episode, but this entire arc by attempting to cater to popular opinion rather than doing what was best for the story and pushing the focus of the episode AWAY from Rudy's depressive spiral and recovery and TOWARDS the romantic entanglements that happen as a result. You can see the thread here (hopefully youtube lets this through): twitter.com/Magote_rihujin/status/1804906805379961171
    And I'm going to say something controversial here: If for one reason or another cutting the second half of ep 23 was deemed impossible due to creator interference (as the Roxy/Elinalise convos are my first choice for what I would have chosen to trim down, ESPECIALLY Elinalise' if the pregnancy scare was being dropped anyways) I would rather Episode 22 have been truncated in its place. WAIT HEAR ME OUT. Paul's death is still of critical importance but not because it is merely sad. Rather it serves a role in kickstarting the necessary development Rudy must undergo to "live a fulfilling life."
    Was episode 22 incredible? Of course (I literally sobbed watching it), but how Paul ultimately ends up dying is not nearly as important as the conversations and renewed connection Rudy formed with Paul leading up to his death and the devastation his death in combination with Zenith's condition causes in Rudeus.
    ****SPOILERS****
    The amount of criticism Rifujin has received over the years seems to have gotten to him to the point that he is attempting to justify the more dubious aspects to folks that aren't really interested one way or another and THAT is the most terrifying part to me because it now brings into question what he plans to do with Aisha/Ars's relationship in the LN Redundancy chapters. At the very least it seems he still plans to follow through on it, but I fear he may change it in ways that are detrimental to the story and its characters because he's paying attention to the opinions of people who don't really care. You cannot please everyone and attempting to do so is a fool's errand.
    ****SPOILERS****
    *spoiler over*
    I've also been seeing the worst examples of both Toxic Negativity and Toxic Positivity. The toxic negative criticism comes in the form of LN purists criticizing every single miniscule cut resulting in DILUTING the conversation around this such that when a cut like this occurs (one that is a central pillar of the thematic core of not only the episode, not only the arc, but the entirety of Mushoku Tensei as a whole) it is drowned out by a wave of idiotic complaints that fail to articulate anything beyond "its different therefore bad." Meanwhile, the toxic positivity manifests as glazing the episode and declaring it to be "masterfully done" either because they are anime onlys and therefore lack the necessary context to understand what it is they are missing OR are LN readers who are drowning in denial at the idea that such an otherwise wonderfully executed adaptation could possibly stumble and face plant THIS HARD at the most critical juncture.
    It fills me with an overwhelming sense of lethargy because of just how much this series means to me. It's like.... oh. Oh fuck.
    It's like realizing Zenith is a husk.

    IMO skipping the convo is worse than how they changed it to “Roxy making him have sex” as a lot of people are saying online.
    In that convo he says “Hypothetically if someone came from another world” and goes on to ask her “What should THEY do?”
    Roxy looked at him and said, “If YOU cannot go back, then YOU should cherish the family you have in front of you.”
    SHE PIECED IT TOGETHER, Roxy cooked that scene and they skipped it and ONLY included “What should I do now?” AFTER they had sex. That convo was BEFORE and so important like what? That’s the worst change they have made to date 100%.
    They could have at least skipped the ED, I know they skipped the OP but like cmon studio Bind fucked this scene up.

    If i Remember correctly is almost 2 weeks without food closed in his room and never say a word before Roxy came in...
    A couple of minutes for the tavern scene in the novel were enough to convey time and urgency for Rudy recovery and the fact that they can't come back without Rudy's magic to handle the sandstorm

    They did a disservice to the beginning of the episode, they should have dropped the raptor scene and the ending song to allocate more time for Rudeus to get his old life off his chest. Still think they should have added an extra episode.

  • @timmythebirthdayboy8635
    @timmythebirthdayboy8635 18 днів тому +12

    As an anime only, I totally assumed that Rudy had spent days closed up in the room from the condition of his face with his cheeks being sunken in and the condition of his eyes and lips. It was the face of someone dying. From the pervious times we've seen him be depressed he never got to that point of almost dying of depression. The only other time was after the Sara breakup which I still count as the rock bottom from the Eris leaving depression cuz he attempted to stab himself with the knife.
    The impression I got from his mental state even after they had sex, was he was still lost and that the sex didn't just magically make everything better, he was still looking to his "savior" for guidance. I've always gotten the impression that Rudy loved Roxy, just not as a romantic partner, but as that idolized savior he looked up. So it took him actually sleeping with her to actually change his mental image of her from being up on that pedestal that he worshiped to being an actual person in his mind. During the desert montage I felt they did an okay job of showing that he still wasn't suddenly better. He's still mopping about. Still needs Roxy to help pick him back up.
    I do think they could've some how slipped it back in as a reminder that the journey to the teleporter circle in the desert took Rudy and Elinalise a month, so in that regard I do think they could've shown it better that this episode was over atleast a month's time period for the average viewer.

    Valid rant. I kind of agree, but after a rewatch I felt like Rudy recollecting with his past life was front and center for a decent bit.
    It definitely should have been explored MORE whether through a "what-if" scenario with Roxy or another inner monologue.
    Hearing an anime only's perspective helped me understand the need for this a bit more.
    Honestly, I wonder if Studio Bind should do test screenings for these episodes to avoid running into situations like this again (if they already do, I'd be surprised).

  • @bondsmatthew
    @bondsmatthew 18 днів тому +5

    The 2 parts that were cut out that you mentioned early on(his inner monologue and the Roxy hypothetical) were 2 of my favorite parts of the series as well and it hurt to see them truncated and removed so much because the story needs those things. The fact that this novel is in peoples' top 5 and they fumbled most peoples' favorite part of it makes me believe the studio/Rifujin/whoever has a different opinion on what it should be than we do and that does kinda scare me for future seasons.
    LN15 is often listed as the number 1 novel in rankings and I'm scared they're not going to give that the adequate time it deserves either. Now, I'm hoping I'm wrong here and we do get more episodes per season or they structure things better(some of 14 can likely be condensed and some of 13 as well) but 15.. 15 for a majority of it HAS to be done well and I'm losing faith. I don't wanna feel that way at all and I do want to have the faith but right now it's not there.
    I hope they stick the landing with the remaining episode

    • @petermuller9480
      @petermuller9480 17 днів тому

      I share your concern for vol 15. 13 and 14 can be condensed (to some degree), which would leave more time and space for vol 15 to be adapted, and I am SURE, that this is exactly what the studio is going to do.
      The actual question is HOW exactly they are going to go about this and what they'll leave out. This is the REAL crux. We both know that there is SOOOO much important stuff in vol 15, that it definitely will be a challenge to adapt it properly. I think they can do it, but we should expect them to not pull it off "perfectly". I do expect this, at least. However, as long as the CORE idea of the events in the story is delivered, I don't mind them cutting out stuff, even if it is interesting in terms of context.
      That's what I feel happened in this latest episode as well! I don't have an issue with this episode, despite it leaving out some stuff. Why? Because THE ESSENCE of Rudy's inner monologue and THE ESSENCE of the reasoning behind Roxy's actions actually was delivered, regardless of what "The Rat's Nest" claims. Sure, they left out some stuff or condensed it down to just a single sentence in some cases, but they didn't actually leave out anything VITAL. They left out some context, like Elinalise implying to Rudy, that Roxy may be pregnant for example. This context was interesting and gave Rudy some more reason to propose to her, but it wasn't THE reason, which is why studio bind decided to leave it out. The same is true for all the other context, that was cut in this episode. Sure, some people are making themselves believe, that IMPORTANT stuff was left out, but the problem is, if you actually look at it objectively, you'll realize, that this "important stuff" only was important to you personally, not for the story as a whole.

    As a WN reader from back then, I'm not as mad as you about what they cut from the episode. Since season 1 they've been cutting a lot of great and important stuff to the plot (Death god, Therese, Ruijerd's backstory, most povs including the only ones from Zenith and Eris, almost an entire volume with Paul's reunion, and like 80% of the world building) that I just grew accustomed to it and accepted that the anime and the novels were just different things that can't be compared.
    Judging the episode in the context of just the anime, it's a great episode with a lot of heartfelt moments and the most anticipated capture of Squirtle. Is it extremely inferior to the novels? Yeah, but that's true of almost every other episode since the beginning. That's because there's no way in hell they can fit all of the great stuff from the novels in an animated medium, much less if they are condensing 6 whole volumes in a single season. They have to cut a lot to make it work, and IMO having an OP this season only worsened the time problems.
    Let's see how they handle the last set of chapters next episode, maybe some of your grievances are addressed there

    I agree that the season could have used another episode, I was expecting something like the Norn episode where they let the audience dig their teeth into the depression and how much Roxy does for him but it is what it is. One thing I'm glad they cut was the fake pregnancy conversation, 1. because it goes no where in the story, dismissed in one sentence and never brought up again and 2. because how incredibly manipulative it is. I would rather Rudy be conflicted by his love for the two women, rather than some fake shotgun wedding. I did find the whole Roxy relationship rather rushed in the LN, so them going even faster in the anime is a choice, but I guess it will be good to get a full episode for the homecoming.

    Tbh from my point of view as both a LN reader and an anime enjoyer, this episode was fine some points hit hard and the message was conveyed. But why i think rat and other LN readers are so upset is because it could have been so much better if they gave it a little more time. But at the same time I feel like its inevitable to get some stuff like this cut short especially in the current anime industry where time is so important.

    Counterpoint: if they had adapted everything during the journey the same... my god then war that would have happened. This part of the novel actually got extra about the plot in a way that I understood why they made rewrites.
    Second point: honestly if they HADN'T changed the way the Roxy and Elinalise conversations went, then I'd definitely be as mad as you. Because of how different things are, I'm able to rationalize this as AO timeline, like when they skipped the Theresa meeting in S1.

    I was so confused why they shifted the theme of the episode from Paul's death and Rudeus' regrets to sex with roxy and marriage. I should start to read the LN before the anime gets to Turning Point 4 just in case they fumble again.
    Edit: I read the part of the WN that was adapted this episode and tbh the Anime felt better than the WN here. Yes there was a section where Rudeus compared his parents from our world and the isekai world but I think it was better in the anime where he at least said that "he made the same mistake again".
    The time that he spend in his room being depressed was better in the WN but the switch between talking, bed action and then talking again felt kinda bad (+ it felt like bed action healed him like Lise told because he got better immediately after action) but the end was nice with Roxy telling Rudi to cherish what he still has.

    You’re right though. I have a friend that is also anime only and I’m afraid this is going to make him think it’s the same harem trash that people say it is. It’s so so good and deserves a much better adaptation. I just hope my friend doesn’t hate the series fully.

    Anime only here. I am a bit conflicted. I love the show, its amazing in so many ways. During season two I was surprised how devoted Rudeus was to Sylphie and found it super wholesom. I thought the anime was going to tear away from the harem trope and I found it refreshing, but then I got spoiled and found out stuff from the lite novel. This episode did not feel ok to me. I dont blame Rudy for sleeping with Roxy. 1) Roxy came onto him in a vulnerable time 2) His mental state can excuse the desperate need to find a connection with anyone at that moment. The thing I have the issue with is the 'emotional cheating', him perusing and entertaining the idea of a full on relationship with her without considering Sylphie. Sure Roxy said at the end "Get permission first from Sylphie" but still rubbed me the wrong way. It took all the devotion Sylphie had for Rudeus and he takes a dump on it. Also not a big fan of poly anyway, at some point in a poly relationship someone is going to be less or more liked than another person and that hurts and gets complicated fast. Its messy. Also can Sylph get another husband? Does she have the same rights to do that? just a question I had while thinking of this.

      I completely agree with you about certain things rubbing you the wrong way. Also coming from a LN reader, I can assure you the polygamy is handled really tastefully, well that is if only the anime does not fuck up the adaptation.

    I think what they did in episode 23 was increase the drama, instead of toning it down like they do in the novel, and spread the blame to both sides. I think the author knows that no matter what Mushoku does, it won't be as popular as (Jujutsu Kaisen, My Hero Academia, Naruto), which is a shame because in my opinion, Mushoku's story is a better story than those animes.

    I disagree. as an anime only I got the grief Rudy felt about not knowing his parents in this life either just from the episode. I would've liked the "I was isekai'd" conversation but it was fine

    The only change I’m HAPPY they made (and I’m someone that hates changes to any original piece for adaptation, I simply understand the need) is that they got rid of the fake pregnancy. That was an egregious choice Rifujin made, clearly using what is known as “showing the authors hand.” Rifujin stepped in to the story to make the choice easy for Rudy by giving a clear cut path, that turned out to be a lie and Rudy never had an issue after that. To me that’s terrible writing, because it steals that difficult choice from his MC by making him face his feelings, and choose them both after that. So getting rid of that point I am okay with I guess, I only struggle to accept it cuz it was still the authors choice so🤦‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @thomasboyles9773

      You've misunderstood something. Rudy DID make his choice. His choice was Sylphie, his marriage, and his kid. He was telling Elenalise he was sorry for it but he had to return home and turn Roxy away, and as he was saying it, she dropped the missed period to force him. She basically said fuck your choice, you're making my friend happy and I'm making sure of it, you little shit. Life doesn't always let you make the choice you want to.

    • @Cameron.ae08
      @Cameron.ae08 18 днів тому

      @@thomasboyles9773 yes, meaning the choice was made for him. The false pregnancy lie led to the marriage, that is the author taking the choice out of his characters hand. That’s what I meant. Is that somehow still wrong?

    • @Cameron.ae08
      @Cameron.ae08 18 днів тому

      @@thomasboyles9773 like I said it’s the authors hand showing too much. It is a similar term as dues ex machina, where readers can tell the author is intervening on the character’s behalf to save them from making a difficult choice.
      In this context you can even include “real world controversy”, because even though Rifujin is (thankfully) fine with writing a “controversial story,” that does not mean they SEEK controversy. When I read that scene it always came off as the author trying to say, “it is okay for Rudy to have a Harem, so all viewers stop complaining” and when I went online for vol 12 a lot of people felt that way too. It was always a weird choice to have the pregnancy lie.

    • @thomasboyles9773
      @thomasboyles9773 18 днів тому +2

      @@Cameron.ae08 Yes. Elenalise took it away from him. A character had a motivation to ruin his choice. His choice was made. Your first comment made it sound like Rudy didn't make a choice. He did.

    • @thomasboyles9773
      @thomasboyles9773 18 днів тому +3

      @@Cameron.ae08 I dsagree that this is in any way deus ex machina. Elenalise specifically resented Paul for leaving the party in the lurch. She refuses to let Rudy abandon Roxy to a fate like that of the fangs after how it festered away. I do not in any way agree that the conversation is out of character for either if them in the novel.

    I really don't understand these arguments about it "needing more time". They only got the okay for 4 episodes per volume. Given this limitation, I think the result is as good as it can get.
    Now for some less important points I want to make:
    - Why would you assume, that the anime didn't spend enough time with Rudy griefing? He clearly was depicted to have been in that room for a long time and he clearly reflected about his previous life and his relationship with Paul. What else would you have added? Him crying for 5 minutes on screen or something? Stupid! (And don't forget: Next episode we'll still be reflection on Paul's passing!)
    - This leads me to a very general problem, that some LN readers seem to have with this adaptation: That it didn't adapt everything from the LNs. This is a stupid idea to begin with! Why? Because, if you actually take off your fanboy goggles, you'll see, that NONE of the stuff, that happened on his journey through Begraritt to Rapan was relevant AT ALL. And everything, that can be left out, SHOULD be left out! This isn't One Piece, where you get an infinite number of episodes to adapt the story! It would be great, if that were the case, but we need to BE REALISTIC and not criticise stuff, that is genuinely well handled within the budgetary limits of this anime. Stop acting like entitled brats!
    -What's up with this rant about "this episode doing a disservice to the story" anyway? Are you alright? Everything you claimed the story didn't communicate to the audience, it actually DID communicate. I feel like you didn't even watch the episode! Just because we don't get to watch a depressed character sit there and wallow in self-pity for 20 minutes straight, doesn't mean, that the anime adaptation didn't properly communicate his feelings! You don't seem to understand how this works!
    Very bad take! Media literacy 1/10. Since you've read this far, I can tell you now, that this is the first actual dogsh*t take of yours! Please, let it remain the only one.
